  • President of the American Battlefield Trust David Duncan walks the grounds of the Ox Hill Battlefield Park (Battle of Chantilly), detailing the beginnings of the modern battlefield preservation movement in 1986.
The American Battlefield Trust preserves America’s hallowed battlegrounds and educates the public about what happened there and why it matters. We permanently protect these battlefields for future generations as a lasting and tangible memorial to the brave soldiers who fought in the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War.

What a shame more of the field wasn't saved. Beautiful what is preserved.

Hopefully overtime we can reclaim more acreage around this battlefield an acre at a time as well as other endangered site's.

Thank you ......I grew up in the D.C area, the Civil War and the War of 1812 are not talked about. I was lucky to have a father who loved history and when I was a kid, we visited these places to learn our local and the nations history

Very interesting to see where it all started. Appreciate the important work that you all do. Outside of my church, the ABT is the only organization that I support financially on a recurring basis.

The problem became, the wave of immigrants from the 80’s through the present and, millennial mindset, demonized and continue to, anything War of Northern Aggression from a southern perspective! They could care less about anything 1775-1945! Call me angry if it makes you feel better, but that’s the dirty truth. Balls Bluff…well, there’s safely hundreds of sites already destroyed and in all reasonable probability, never recoverable. Oh there was a “profitable” destruction of other historic sites prior to the 1980’s…but the attitude today, is remarkably different. And I’ll not reply to comments…it’s just pathetic what has been destroyed with no regrets or remorse. Despicable even.
      Carry on, over and out.

I was there today for the first time and actually walked the trail twice and read everything at least once. This is such a hidden gem of history and I’m so glad that I could learn more about what happened before us before we erase it all. Thank you for the hard work to keep this place alive and educating!

Chantilly is a very emotional topic for me. My company's headquarters at one point was directly across the street from the parcel that was eventually developed into a shopping center with a Safeway and Bed Bath & Beyond directly on top of the most important part of the battlefield. It literally brings me to tears to think about this desecration. I am a proud member and supporter of the American Battlefield Trust, and am very very grateful for all of the incredible work that they have been able to accomplish. Thanks, David, for bringing the history of Chantilly to people's attentiion.

I walk this gem at least once a week. It is a nice retreat from the bustling area. I hope that future generations can enjoy this time capsule.

Interesting, I would have thought it was some place at Gettysburg. But makes sense with all the commercial development. Been a member for years now, love everything y’all are doing

Nice to see you in the field David again. Thanks for bringing this video on Ox Hill. Very informative & bringing attention on the importance of Hollowed Ground that still needs to be saved.

This battlefield will now hold a more special place in my heart. A great reminder of what would had happened if not for this organization attempts to save American Battlefields across this nation.

Jesus, Manassas Battlefield is just 10 miles away. I remember Ox Hill from the 1970s when there was a golf driving range where the shopping mall is now. The ground was horribly corrupted. The purpose of our visit was so a buddy's dad could relic hunt with a metal detector. We didn't find a thing. All picked over. But we stepped in numerous holes dug by the relic hunters who had cleaned the field of every scrap of ferrous metal. I kept turning my ankle because the ground was completely pock-marked. I support battlefield preservation, but development is a very, very good thing.

Chantilly, Civil War Defenses of Washington, Balls Bluff and Bristoe Station are all great spots in the NoVa area. I think Bristoe Station is an above average battlefield.

Northern VA is basically turning into DC metropolitan. It's a shame, and I hope the battlefields are left untouched
