  • Abstract: LEGO has built a global empire and become a household name, thanks to the interlocking bricks that its founders developed half a century ago. But the company almost went belly up in the early 2000s due to a binge of innovation that took it too far away from what LEGO did best. In a new book, Wharton practice professor David Robertson details how thinking too far "outside the box" almost bankrupted LEGO -- and how the company found a winning formula by turning to innovation "inside the brick."

I love how the girl moves her hand all over the place to say "where did the company go wrong?" LOL

With that said, the main idea - that LEGO was over-expanding in the late 90s and early 2000s, and recovered by focusing back on their core products - I'll bet there's a more even-handed presentation in the book itself. I'll have to pick it up some time.

Very neat video, but I feel like some of the facts are a bit misleading. Explore was mostly just a re-branding of the LEGO Duplo brand, which is still successful to this day. It had some other products aimed at infants, but it was not all that different from what is sold to this day. Jack Stone, likewise, was a transitional brand between Duplo and classic LEGO, much like the Fabuland theme of the 80s. So it wasn't aimed at "kids who don't like LEGO", but rather "kids who aren't ready for LEGO".

Wow, LEGO is a master of Branding - love it - excellent work - and it is a great toy that helps develop creativity and thinking. Perfect for humans.

It grinds my gears when Americans say "legos" for plural. It's like "sheep", The plural is still "sheep"

Which is weird, because Americans don't say "Maths" when referring to mathematics.
