Mavis left, but then she went off to star in the utterly brilliant Dinnerladies series (all 16 episodes of which are here on RUclips) with 6 other Coronation Street actors.
Blimey! I can't do 10 more years of Les Battersby et al. I'm going back to the good old days, with the Oggies, Eddie, Bet, Elsie, Ena, Len, and Annie Walker. Thank you for all your hard work, EveHenleySpread. You're a Star! What are ya?
This is great I had heaps of 1997-98 episodes saved on my box. And was months behind let them build up and my box packed in. Lost everything and don't enjoy the period they are at now on classic Corrie. So thanks a lot.
No more "Maaaavissss!" said with a contented grin or "Ohhhh, Derek....." I loved that couple. Part of me wanted to see the departure to Cartmel all by herself as unrealistic, especially given the kind of underwhelming treatment the exit plot gave her, but another part of me thinks it really was plausible, because Mavis is rather tough. She would finally be doing something she loved and which provided inspiration, and without Rita's conditions or management to obstruct her. When she was much younger, she amazed the neighbourhood by winning a swimming marathon for a charity, by just keeping her cool and carrying on, one lap after the next.
Mavis deserved a proper send off where her final episode was mainly dedicated to her like Hilda's back in Christmas 1987 instead of Ken telling Deirdre about Jon's real occupation being the main storyline, the Jon Linsay storyline was quite good but it could have taken a backseat for this episode. I guess at least she got say goodbye to the street as Ena Sharples and Annie Walker practically disappeared from Corrie without any proper final episode. The end of Don Brennan was a great storyline, loved at the time the way the action took place while the credits rolled something you never see today as the tv companies would be rushing to get to the adverts!!! Sad to see the end of Percy. Thank you Eve for all your hard work, really enjoy reliving these 1997 episodes again.
Mavis left suddenly in real life she hated the direction the show was going! She wanted out ASAP! So I don't think they had time. Not to.mention other than Rita no one really knew her long enough or was her friend, I guess Emily was at a push, Annie and Ena didn't want send offs cause they where both going to come back but didn't. Annie got sick and Ena Died in really life.
Thank you for upload these episodes of Coronation Street of October 1997 Eve Henley Spread. I hope some miserable self-righteous spoilsport does not arrange to have them removed.
Really can't stand the way the Battersby clan talk to ,and make fun of the older residents of the street....it's not big and it's not clever. Its very disrespectful and uncomfortable to watch.
lol yes I commented on that myself, it was clearly meant to be 1937 which incidentally was the actor Geoff Hinsliff's year of birth - he died in the last couple of months. RIP Geoffrey
Great month for Corrie: Goodbye Don and Percy, a reluctant hello (again) to Nick Tilsley - the new 'improved' version with the looks of Rupert Bear and the acting skills of Noddy (yes, he too was made of wood, like Pinocchio). And Jon Lindsay, glamorous divorced pilot is finally unmasked as a married with kids tie salesman with delusions of grandeur, more in love with fantasy than with either of the two women he's stringing along. Deirdre is so besotted (or desperate?) she's happy to play along with one lie, but oh dear, there's lots more to come.
There goes Rita letting people down again.first Bette ,then the partnership with the Duckworths, then Mavis and the B and B now Judy at the Kabin. She offers then pulls out or let's her friends down continually. Not to mention trying to control Sally and Kevin by giving them that money.i used to like Rita but she has changed.
Rita thinks that because she has money, and was married to Len, that she has status; in fact, "Councilor Fairclough" developed into a beer-swilling bully, and was not the rugged, Albert Finney type the producers originally intended.
On Rita’s Street Talk cassette released in 1995 to coincide with the 35th anniversary she tells of her mum taking her to have an abortion when she was younger, it was even reproduced in one of the Sunday supplement magazines, but as far as I’m aware this has never been mentioned in the show proper. Also, before Len and Rita looked into fostering in the early ‘80s, Rita went to see a lady who was selling her baby! That type of storyline is commonplace in soaps nowadays but was unheard of at the time.
Rita causing havoc again. How many times has she been 99.9% confirmed on a deal causing the other person to make plans only to back out at the last minute? Twice with the Rovers and now the B&B.
It's either a 5 or one of those squashed font 3s. I can't tell. Pausing is no good so I changed the speed to x.25 really slow and it still looks like a 3 or a 5. He was born in 1937 according to Corriepedia so I don't know. Whatever you do, don't do what I did and play it at .25 speed from 3:21:40 because the priest's voice will scare the heck out of you, really creepy!
It defiantly says 1957. It was supposed to say 1937, but obviously somewhere between the Producers ordering the plaque and its actual engraving, a massive cock-up took place. My guess is that on the day of filming it was to late to change it so Granada hoped folk simply wouldn't notice.
Its no mistake on the coffin because quite a few years ago there was some scene where Don had to give his date of birth, to a doctor or some other official & he actually said day, month then 1957! I was floored because the year of that episode was about the time he was seeing barmaid Julie & he looked about 50yrs then! There was no way he was 36yrs at that time! @eph2817 I don't know about Audrey being worse than Ivy Tilsley, but I do know that Audrey makes Caroline in Sons and Daughters seem like a saint. Caroline in Sons and Daughters would never take a dislike to anyone unless they gave her good reason to. Audrey took a dislike to Emily's nephew Spider just because he was not moulded into her way of how she thinks a young man should be. Yet Audrey decided she liked Candice for some unknown reason and yet Candice was a troublemaker.
For heaven's sake Gail!!! Always turning up at the most inopportune moments for ridiculous reasons and barging your way into conversations between Chris and Sally
Some commenters have complained about the stupidity of recent storylines, like the Mallets' baby purchase, but I can't remember anything more idiotic than the ridiculous happenings in certain houses due to Les Battersby's attic hopping antics, except maybe the plot concerning the Wiltons' garden gnomes.
And apparently Jean Alexander (Hilda) pointed out the ridiculousness of that Battersby storyline at the time i.e. Ken and Emily would have known there was no partition in the roof as Hilda did the exact same thing in the late 70s when she had that feud with Elsie Tanner. Not playing childish pranks, but putting a broom 🧹 through Elsie's ceiling. So basically it showed the sheer laziness of the writers.
Call me infantile with the mentality of pond life... But.. i cracked up laughing at the Abhorent les battersbys prank of using the attic crawl space to get into the neighbours houses & leaving oddities & eating fairy cakes & drinking booze.. But the barmy practical joke of pinning Percys war medals into his pyjama top & leaving the pyjama ensemble displayed on Percys bed, was utterly brilliant! It conjured up something from a Monty Python sketch! It was sooooo funny! Thanks EHS, what a tonic & hurray hurrah the wicked wizard of dastardly deeds Don, is finally Gone! He made my skin crawl 🇬🇧👧
You know the more I think about this Jon Lindsay storyline the more far fetched it seems. Are we expected to believe that Deirdre would be stupid enough to give a conman a second chance after the experience she had a few years earlier with Phil Jennings?
Too be fair it's possible with the deirdre character she's one of those women that counts her worth based on whether she has a man in her life or not. I can see her putting up with anything in order to have a man. 😂
At 6:02:50 Jim raised a good question. What is wrong with being 40? Today the actresses of Sarah and Candice are now 40. These days it is now common that people live to double that age. Diana Ross is now twice 40.
Fair dues. You can hardly blame Nicky for being attracted to Leanne. She's so plain and devoid of class and breeding. Who in the hell could resist that?
Not to mention she's a bit swivel-eyed.. (probably a bit unfair of me, I know the actress Jane Danson has a lazy eye which goes for a wander every now and then!)
What a useless send off for Percy sudden.i know his character and story lines dwindled over the past twelve months or so but really a small wave from Emily ?
In episode 4291 between 6:38:54 and 6:40:53 is the bit I like best. Gail being the female version of Clarence Creep who is Winker Watson's form master in the Dandy makes the show more interesting to watch.
Originally, the Cartmel B and B was Mavis's idea and her sole venture. It was Rita who muscled herself in! Rita has always been a "city girl," and obviously not suitable.
Yep... there's quite a few comments about that (including my own).. it's clearly a mistake, should have been 1937 otherwise he's had one hell of a hard life! ;-)
When Don first turned up to try & brain Mikes head in with a brick & was hiding in the little alley way just past Kevs garage The suppliers van drew up just before Don could attack Mike Don was watching & the van had the name of Scotts on the side & he heard the van driver tell Mike the next delivery was Thursday So that's how Don knew the suppliers name & when the next delivery was going to be. Its why Don phones Angie to reschedule the delivery for early on Wednesday so the coast would be clear to carry out his attack on Mike unhindered ! Cheers 🇬🇧👧
44:15 Sarah lou gets a glimpse 3 years into her future…. Crikey dibble turned up rather sharpish eh? Angie is like a pane of glass totally transparent. Rita has a hair across her arse with Judy & Katie. Gail’s blinking at lightening speed troubles a brewin’
At the time I never realised just how much of a desperate woman deidries character was same for liz but watching it now it's cringy watching the pair of them. And liz's voice and gormless face just annoys the hell out of me
@@EveHenleySpread Sorry for naughty word, I’ll edit if you want, right though lol. Wasn’t Arnold the first bigamist as well, another commonplace storyline nowadays. I read in one of the Corrie retrospective books Eileen Derbyshire said in between takes for Arnold’s suicide pact scenes, she and the actor playing him were dancing round Emily’s front room lol.
There are some rather inconsistent story lines. The lofts of the houses are suddenly supposed to be connected. A few years before, however, Jack Duckworth had to spend the night on the roof of Curley‘s house because he had taken a pigeon hostage in his loft. So, back then the loft of the houses were separate units. 🧐
Rita was always intrinsically a selfish character, she backed out of so many deals, letting many down. When she met Len, she hounded him for a better place, then a better house, lording it above Mavis all the time, fighting with Elsie. She thought she was always a crust above it all being a singer, and a out of tune 2nd rate boring one at that.
I didn't like Don too much but grew to like him I tought it was so disrespectful of Janice to say them nasty things. It felt like it was a snide remark more about the actor than the character.
Why is Deirdre interrupting Ken with a "very important" problem about her stupid boyfriend? And then, tell him to stay out of it! Is a hang nail a major trauma????? And hey Gail - If Nick got some college girl pregnant, would that be OK with you??
Mavis left, but then she went off to star in the utterly brilliant Dinnerladies series (all 16 episodes of which are here on RUclips) with 6 other Coronation Street actors.
I'll so miss Percy, such a good gentleman. Funny as well, but always good hearted. Damn the changes in the show made him want to leave. Thanks Brian.

A lot is happening this month. Thanks Eve.
Truly the end of Classic Corrie around this time.
someone said that 4 years ago. and someone else when hilda ogden left.
For me it ended in about ‘84 when most of the great characters had gone.. only to be replaced by substandard ones like Curly & Kevin.
This was a massive time of chance. Brian Park took over and wanted to bring it to a younger audience! He axed many long term characters.
Late 70s Early 80s Corrie was as dull as dishwater
Grimey and drab🏚️
Still looks like the 1930s
That era of Corrie😩
In my humble opinion 🎉
Mavis deserved a proper send off where her final episode was mainly dedicated to her like Hilda's back in Christmas 1987 instead of Ken telling Deirdre about Jon's real occupation being the main storyline, the Jon Linsay storyline was quite good but it could have taken a backseat for this episode. In terms of looks, they did very well the Nick recast. I can easily see the first one growing into the second one.

Who's running the rovers where's Jack and vera
They died.
Don on phone with Angie. How the hell does Don know who one of their suppliers are.
Have I missed something
When Don first turned up to try & brain Mikes head in with a brick & was hiding in the little alley way just past Kevs garage
The suppliers van drew up just before Don could attack Mike
Don was watching & the van had the name of Scotts on the side & he heard the van driver tell Mike the next delivery was Thursday
So that's how Don knew the suppliers name & when the next delivery was going to be.
Its why Don phones Angie to reschedule the delivery for early on Wednesday so the coast would be clear to carry out his attack on Mike unhindered !
Cheers
🇬🇧👧
@@itallia666 thank you for explaining that to me, it makes sense now. Happy days 😊
Between 6:03:55 and 6:04:17 What do you know Deidre's latest boy-firend has got a wife and a little girl and boy.
That Kevin Webster is as bad as Gail.
Don Brennan was only 40 when he died? 1957-1997 surely not 3:21:57
Yep, I've commented the same thing.. clearly a mistake! Must have been at least 60! (or he's had a hard life!)
Never liked the Les Battersby character
@TrevorThompson-nf9dp I don't think anybody did exept Maria's brother Kirk.
😂😂
No way was don only 40 got to be a mistake on the coffin there
Lucky Sally she's got dishy Chris and got shut of shouty moaning Kevin.
3:20:13 dons funeral
At the time I never realised just how much of a desperate woman deidries character was same for liz but watching it now it's cringy watching the pair of them. And liz's voice and gormless face just annoys the hell out of me
What is going on between Leanne and Nick is similar to what went on between Andy and Katie in Emmerdale four and a third years later.
So over the years, that’s Emily, Rita, Deirdre then Gail all fallen for complete bastards before the newer characters continued the tradition!
Emily’s being the mad pet shop owner Arnold Swain I presume?! Now those were the days! 😉
I'd forgotten what an obnoxious waster Les Battersby was. And I can't remember if he improved.
He didn’t
@@EveHenleySpread 🤣😂
Rita was always intrinsically a selfish character, she backed out of so many deals, letting many down. When she met Len, she hounded him for a better place, then a better house, lording it above Mavis all the time, fighting with Elsie. She thought she was always a crust above it all being a singer, and a out of tune 2nd rate boring one at that.
@londonlady227 When Rita was married to Len She was often belittling him. In some ways Rita could be worse than Annie Walker.
Never liked mavis don Ken dreary rita Sally and bloody horrible Gail back to the 70s for me .
The Battersby were an unwelcome addition to the street.
