  • In this episode I start off near the Great Sand Dunes National Park. I had rode from near Creed Colorado where I stayed after making in through the mountain passed from near Telluride the prior day.

Just found your channel. The Sand Dunes Park is awesome. Especially after a rainstorm. All the sand gets crunchy and it becomes easy to walk on.

Like Nathan said , a 14 tooth front sprocket on a klr makes it so much easier to traverse those rocky parts . It still allows 60 mph without hurting the bike. First gear otherwise is just too tall .

Looks like you had a great adventure! A 14t sprocket will make off road a lot easier. Thanks for sharing.

How much top speed do you lose? I've thought about it, nervous that I'd loose highway cruising speed.

55-65 your fine, you can still hit 85 or so but the low end torque and slow riding is so much better. It is really easy to swap out, 20min+-. Pack one with you on your next adventure.

Thanks man! It's a great bike. Only two complaints are the design of the water pump(damn thing had me at one point only want air cooled bikes) and that it loosens bolts contantly. Enjoy the trip man!

Riders: If you are approaching the dunes from the south, there is a waterfall coming off the mountains on the east side of the road in a little park a few miles south of the park. Turn into the park and ride east, brave the washboard road up the slope to a parking area and do the 10 minute walk up to the falls. In the summer you will feel the cold rush of chilled air as a reward when you near the end. For a real treat take your river sandals and a camera. Enter the stream on the right, maneuver upstream and over the three foot concrete wall on the left side of the stream. it will look like the water is coming out of the rock on your left while you're facing upstream. Wade upstream hugging the rock wall on your left and you will enter a great hall in the rock. Go in far enough to see the water pouring in from above. The water is cold but less than a foot deep so you'll be fine the whole way. It is a wonderful treat and well worth the small effort. The cold water will sting your feet, but you can get in and out in 5-10 minutes. and will be warm again in no time. Any map should have the name of the falls, I just can't remember it right now.
