Graduated from mine in 2018 and just graduated last week with my bachelors degree with less than $4,000 in debt which wasn’t even from tuition. I absolutely recommend community college!
A degree is a degree no matter what school you graduate from. I was blessed to go to community college and graduate with zero debt. I have friends that went to private and big name schools who are still paying off their debt over ten years later.
totally agree community college is nothing to be embarrassed about. You don't drown in student debt and take the same classes as those in a four year. Either way any college you go to is wonderful.
This totally reminds me of extrinsic vs intrinsic motivation. Wanting to be as good as others is extrinsic and finding intrinsic motivation - doing things for yourself and doing them because you want to - is so important
Haha I go to Hunter and honestly it's not bad at all. It's one of the top CUNY schools in NYC. Ashley’s experience was probably not for her but Hunter is a good school.
Just graduated yesterday from Coastline Community College, and got three degrees from it. You are right Matthew! Community College is not embarrassing. My family can't afford to send me to college or university, so my sis and I had to do everything ourselves. I did better probably in community college first rather than University where if I dropped out, I would have wasted thousands of dollars. Thank you for being on this show because it shows that KPOP idols aren't that different from us who lead normal lives, I pray for your guys' success and please make more music!
When BM was talking about the community college stigma it hit me. I felt bad for going to CC instead of a CSU/UC, but i ended up transferring to UCLA and now I’m getting my Masters. CC’s are good, you just have to work extra hard to transfer to your dream school. If you’re reading and are going through the same thing, keep at it :)
I can totally relate to BM about his regret on not being able to establish a system of time management during college. Which is too important once you start working!
I am finishing up my last year of community college. I got into UC Berkeley, UCLA, and all the other UC's but I'm going to UC Davis!!! Go Aggies! Damn Matt you got into Cal Poly straight out of high school!!!!
I was waiting for something hopeful when Joan said, "For those who are in college listening to this podcast right now, you're probably complaining about it a lot, but trust me.." and then she said life after college gets more stressful. That gave me more anxiety instead. I thought she was going to say it gets better 😂😂😂
Definitely agree.. College taught me a lot about time management and Joan I went to school in the bay area and the freshman 15 is so real! Sooo much good food literally everywhere!!! Also omg I wish I studied abroad.. I highly recommend doing that in college too!
ayeee bay area represent !! the freshman 15 is not a myth lol. for incoming freshmen please learn how to cook healthy meals for yourself. also learn how to do your own laundry and you don’t have to get your drivers license before college but it does help when you need to get around. learn to budget your time and money.

Many community colleges have partnerships with bigger universities and make it easier to developing a path to get in. Also, you knock out the general studies in community college so you save so much cash, like Joan said.
It's true that Joan is smart smart. I saw her linkedin a few months ago and it really shows that she's smart. You might see from how the way she talks. I adore her!😍❤
As someone who’s going to college next school year, it’s really nice to hear their advice and stories. I’m still extremely nervous about how college life is going to be, but listening to them made it a little better 🥺🥺
As someone who went to university. You see how the give you syllabus on the first day of classes? Don't take those for granted. Have them in your calendar, develop a healthy attachment to your calender. Time management is key
BM is 1000% correct haha. The question to ask when questioning a potential roommate is “Do you snore?”. My roommate in college was one of my best friends but he snored like a mother father. Still love that foo tho.
There is no podcast that I enjoy more than Get Real. I have been watching dive studios podcasts for a long time. I’m on last year of my high school so I’m related to that topic I think and I wanted to say that I hope there will be more episodes about their early 20s/college etc. .Watching and hearing their advices helps me a lot actually, I’m not saying specifically for this episode I’m talking about all episodes. I enjoy watching you guys, it feels like I’m there in conversations with you. Thank you to Dive Studios for making that content. Normally I don’t comment on YT videos but I really wanted to thank you🧡
To the girl who asked the first question. Comparison is the thief of joy. Look at yourself & where you've come from & be proud of where you are. I know there's still alot you will accomplish. If anything learn from those you think are doing "better", see what you can take from their journey & apply to yours. Like BM said you're a smart person, I have no doubt you'll accomplish great things ❤️
I’m glad you guys finally touched about the topic of college ive been so anxious about it since I’m about to be a senior this come school year. The fact that I’m graduating early isn’t helping with my indecisiveness. So thank you for calming my nerves
I want to mention that going to a “University of” vs a state school also is not as much of a big deal as people make it to be! Of course if your major offers more at a U school then try for that but don’t feel any shame for going to a state school. Once you’re out of college, what happens next is really up to you and selling yourself rather than a name of a school on a resume.
I really want to thank you guys for telling me to appreciate myself and what I have done to get here. I have been stressed the whole day today and upset at myself for not getting to the place I wanted to be. I now realize that it was because I was comparing myself to others who have been working harder than me. I never gave myself the credit. Thank you so much. I think I can take my test in peace tomorrow now. If I get the A, it is all thanks to you guys!!
One of the things I regret is not studying abroad. I stayed in my comfort zone and didn't even enjoy college that much. I wish I could turn back time. 🥲
Listen yall, I'm going to a community college in the fall and I'm so happy bc I am literally saving thousands of dollars, AND my tuition is covered from fasfa. They are a blessing in disguise and the schedule can be flexible. If I had to do the application process all over again, community college would still be number one.
Really enjoyed this episode as a recent grad from UC Berkeley! Here are a few notes: 1. The food at UC Berkeley wasn't bad but wasn't good either.. The best thing I had at the dining halls were kimchi fries. 2. We still have decals (student taught P/NP courses)! I've taken a couple and also taught one for 3 semesters in a row. I'm a bit biased, but these were such great ways to get exposure to more fun topics and honestly were usually well-organized and well-taught! 3. I think no matter how hard you try to pick the "perfect" roommate/housemate, you will only know if you like/hate living with the person by experiencing it. My roommate/housemates and I all got along with each other in terms of personalties and interests, but the biggest root cause of a lot of "drama" was from our different living habits (mainly cleanliness), which I only discovered after living with them. I'd definitely echo with what Joan had to say about "it's all an experience that will become a story one day."
yes i’m from california and going to community college is one of the best decision. I didn’t pay a dime for tuition + was in a program that covered the cost of my textbooks. The only thing i spent my money was on school supplies and transportation. Plus your acceptance is focused on your CC grades instead of standardized test (i.e. SAT). The only downside for me was the transfer application process. However, counselors are there for a reason and we’re very helpful to me!!
My cousin just got the news that she was accepted into Berkley! Ahhh, so excited for her that it makes me hyped up even tho I'm not graduating yet, but this really helps for when I am applying for colleges. Thx for talking about your college experiences and tips :)
I got into UC Berkeley, USC and UCLA waitlist the other day! I believe community college is a great option but for me personally I just been preparing for a 4 year for a long time.
49:47-50:10 I'm currently in college right now taking Political Science and in relation to what Joan had said (within the time stamp), it made me realize that yeah I should make the most out of my college journey, balance work and play, and do my best to enjoy.
Before I graduated high school I didn't know what college to apply to, luckily the community college in my county helped me apply to their school 3 months before I graduate. All I had to do afterwards to go in was to take a placement test and my do financial aid paper work then I was in. Trust me when I say not knowing where to go and going to community college at first was the best decision I made. I didn't graduate from community college with my associates degree then transferred. I transferred all my credits to my current college, which was about 60 something credits. And in the end I'm probably going to have about $14k-$15k in federal student loans because I didn't have to take out loans during community college and only relied on my pell grant.
Ok for real, community college is such a great option!! The actual application process is way less pressure, which is nice because your junior and senior year of high school is already stressful enough. They have rolling admission so you can apply basically anytime for the upcoming semester, meaning that you can apply even in the summer after you graduate high school and get in for Fall semester (this may affect your priority for selecting classes, but that's not really a big issue). Also, you do not need to take the SAT or ACT and you do not need to write a personal essay! Plus you save a bunch of money!! There is less pressure to figure out your major right away; you can feel a bit more free to explore your options (academically and in other parts of your life). If you are managing your classes well enough, it's pretty easy to transfer and I think your chances of getting accepted as a transfer student are a bit higher than a freshman (especially if your grades are good). Plus there are academic counselors on campus who can help you make a plan to transfer. And you can take your time. There is no shame in taking more than 2 years at a community college. There are some really good professors at community college as well. Search on the "rate my professor" website to find them. My community college professors left more of an impact on my life than my 4 year university professors because they were so engaging and made themselves available to help and communicate with their students. Also, in my opinion, it's not about the college you go to or graduate from. It's more about you and how you utilize the resources and opportunities at that school and your own mindset and determination which will get you success and fulfillment. You could go to the most prestigious school and be depressed or feel stuck on a certain path and not be utilizing the resources and opportunities that you actually want because you feel too much societal pressure and or and super overwhelmed and could end up feeling not great about your college experience. Or you could be going to a community college or a state school and trying out the little opportunities that you have and making the most of them and opening more doors for yourself and pursuing what you want and end up feeling like your college experience was really helpful and informative. Basically, it's up to you to make the most of your college experience. So it's important to take care of your mental health, seek therapy (usually free campus therapy is an option), and really try to get to know yourself and the environments/situations that you thrive in. That can be so helpful for when you are applying to new schools, or adapting to the school that you are already in, or transferring schools, and even while seeking jobs. Good luck out there to all the students, incoming students, returning students, recent grads, and to everyone just trying to figure out what they are doing!!!
hey guys, thank you for making this episode. i’m about to start college and i’m a little nervous, so i really appreciated y’all sharing your experiences and thoughts. the get real podcast is always amazing!:)
Once I graduated from high school back in 2019 I went straight into community college just to save money and to be sure of the major I wanted to do because I was kind of undecided at the time. Luckily I made the right choice because I did end up changing my major and so far it’s the best decision I’ve made and I’m about to graduate next year with my associates degree in teaching and then I will be off to university so community college is not a bad thing 😌
Thank you 😄😄 I'm in third year in college kinda on a break and listening to this helps to release the stress of what might come on my two years left. I might try to study abroad or something like what Joan said.
I agree with Joan! My highschool life and college life was switched. Everyone's expecting that I'll be studios like eversince. Haha I went to college and be like "I'm tired of studying and responsibilities". Let's drink til 4AM, go home, sleep til like 8AM and go to exam by 9AM
I'm in my first year of university doing a bachelor's degree in education but because of covid I'm doing distance learning so I've never actually attended a class in real life. It doesn't even feel like I'm learning anything tbh, all I've been doing is just trying my best to hand in all these damn assignments before 23:59. 😩
Can we get Sunny Dahye here as well ? My gosh I really need Ashley x Sunny's interactions haha, but well I think sunny too has so many things to say on the podcast not only her business, but as a korean that actually start everything in Indonesia, would like to know that more. I think we gonna learn so much from her experiences
Please do an episode on getting fit.Advice from BM.Would like to know from all 3 of you.How you guys maintain weight, skincare and overall taking care and being sane while working and under excess workload. #getreal
I attended community college with a major I lost in interest in (I changed it two times :/ ) I couldn’t leave because I was a scholarship student, was one year away from graduating with my associates, and most of all, I didn’t want to disappoint my parents.
If you're planning to JC you don't have to take the SATs. As of now most JCs are free! Woohoo!Woo-hoo! This is in Cali not sure about the rest of the states.
same joan, same (21:40).. I've been an honor student from elementary to high school, but when I went to college I felt that I studied and stressed even more but the most important thing is just to get passing grades lol. I got good grades though, and I graduated last year.
shout out the Bay Area 🤪 also what Matthew said so right don’t sure yourself out and go to community college you save tons of money and have time to decide ur major!
It seems that the college/university applications in the us and Canada are pretty different. I applied to two of my city's main universities (different programs for each). Got accepted to all but one program. We only needed to choose the university and program and hit submit on the university application website to finish the process. I didn't have to write any essays or take any specialized tests to submit an application. I only needed to keep my average grade up. (at least above 80) But the program I wanted to go to only required me to have a grade higher than 75 and the average of all math courses to be higher than 75. The transcript was already in the website system because my school gave me the login details and instructions.

Good luck out there to all the students, incoming students, returning students, recent grads, and to everyone just trying to figure out what they are doing!!!
okay but let's add that school should also help us to manage money, taxes and all that stuff, THAT would be very helpful as a basic understanding

I have so much respect for BM studying psychology!! My ideal man 💞
Once I graduated from high school back in 2019 I went straight into community college just to save money and to be sure of the major I wanted to do because I was kind of undecided at the time.
I am gonna rewatch this episode whenever i feel demotivated 🦥💜love you guys

I actually struggling with college these days I'm scared 🤪
I attended community college with a major I lost in interest in (I changed it two times :/ ) I couldn’t leave because I was a scholarship student, was one year away from graduating with my associates, and most of all, I didn’t want to disappoint my parents.
oh my gosh. Where was this when I needed this?
I just got into Berkeley and only found out now that Joan went to Berkeley 😳😳😳😳after watching her videos for three years
Can y’all make a video with the HWAITING cast💜💜💜btw love your podcasts
Hunter is also pretty competitive and it’s at the Upper East side so you get all the good museums and parks nearby.

Wow I loved this episode topic sm 😭💕
Cal poly is a really good school. Wow BM!
Omg cal poly Pomona!! I was considering going there
Yayy... With Joan again😁
