      There was a now debunked rumor in the 90's that the villain in Indiana Jones 4 would be Indy's long lost brother, to be played by Kevin Costner. Imagine if it had been Tom Selleck! The brother ignored and cast out by Sean Connery's Henry Sr, never getting the archeological teaching that Indy did, and now bitter and twisted as how their lives differed. Hmmm....... "That should have been me up there remembered for saving the Ark!" "Er...Tom that's not in the script".

      High Road actually predates Raiders. It's adapted from a 1977 novel and went into development before Raiders box office success. John Huston, director of Treasure Of The Sierra Madre was going to helm, with current James Bond Roger Moore starring. It was eventually directed by Brian G Hutton, who helmed Spielberg's favorite ever World War Two movie Kelly's Heroes. And scored by James Bond composer, John Barry.

Certainly not acting to a cgi dog in Call of the Wild, or playing old INDY. I don't know if he will be on point in a Disney Marvel movie, I mean they sure could do worse.

    George's deal for Raiders is actually the same one he got for Star Wars. Well almost. There he couldn't prevent Fox having creative input, but because they didn't have much faith in it he got the rights to the sequels, which is why Fox only retained A New Hope after Disney bought Lucasfilm. He also got the merchandising rights, which made him more money than his box office share. Following this studios were wise to how loose Fox had been with their deal, and so weren't going to let that happen to them. It is interesting that while Lucas used his new fortune to self-fund the Star Wars sequels and prequels, he asked studios to fully fund Indiana Jones.

      @@Bulletsandblockbusters I did wonder if he could only afford one. In fact on Empire which went notoriously over budget, he had to ask Fox to chip some money in, although that didn't gain them any hold over it. I guess with Indy he thought after Star Wars studios wouldn't dare tell him how to make his movie. Esp with the director of Jaws and Close Encounters helming it. Maybe he should have brought his buddy Coppola, dir of the last highest grossing movie ever prior to Jaws, in as a prod, to shut the studios up.

Titled “The Seven Cities of Cibola”, the story features a sequence of panels where the Beagle Boys (one of Scrooge’s recurring bad guys) attempt to swipe a gold idol from an ancient, ruined temple. Upon grabbing it from its pedestal, the chamber begins to shake and then a large boulder tumbles down and almost crushes the would-be thieves. Sound familiar? If not, let me refresh your memory: that is straight-up the iconic climax from the opening temple sequence in “Raiders”.

    • @Simon-xc5oy
      @Simon-xc5oy 2 месяца назад +1

      I never watched Magnum P.I. either at the time. I was just a kid and living in England I could not relate to a show set in Hawaii which is like an alien planet to me. But I loved to see the intro with the Ferrari and cool music. Back in 2013 I was going through a nasty divorce and one morning noticed the first episode of Magnum on tv and decided to finally watch it and see what it was like. I was hooked instantly! Its so SO good! Yes it looks dated now as it was the early 80s, but the character of Magnum as played by Selleck is utterly brilliant. He makes it his own and is so likeable, while being a bit of a bum and layabout and takes advantage of his friends a lot. The rest of the cast, Higgins and T.C. and Rick etc are utterly brilliant. And Magnum himself grows on you rapidly and has a huge back story to him that is slowly revealed bit by bit over the episodes and seasons. Its got layers to it all. And how he and Higgins do not get along but gradually build a friendship its just so well written. And then there is the usual murder, crime solving plot of the week, cool Ferrari and stunning scenery as well. Its a must see. I ended up grabbing all the seasons on disk and it got me through my divorce. No one else could ever play Magnum as well as him, which is why the remake never had the same impact. Its one of those shows like Miami Vice that has a huge identity and made a massive pop culture impact. And is still as popular today because of it. Give it a watch, its nice to escape the Woke for a while and go back to a world where Tv and film was just their to entertain us all....

    If you look at the scene where Marcus goes to Indy's house in the released film, notice that Indy has a glass of Champagne he's drinking, and another, half filled on a table. Why would Indy be drinking wine from two glasses on his own? Also why is he wearing a dressing gown? It's not the middle of the night, as the establishing shot shows it's sunset. And Indy doesn't seem like he's just woken up. Was Indy in bed for another reason? This suggests that the entertaining a young woman part may have been shot, and either what we see is an alternative take or they decided on set to drop the love interest aspect. In fact a character is teed up for this. Now it could be the winking girl (or any of Indy's admiring female students) but the likeliest answer is Indy's apparent flame, who also appears, albeit briefly. When Marcus arrives at Indy's class he looks across the hallway to a young woman waiting. Marcus gives an expression that suggests he knows why she's there and he's not surprised. That's all we see in the released film. But in a deleted scene, viewable on the Blu Ray but strangely listed as an Outtake, we see what happens after Indy and Marcus leave the class. Indy is stopped by the woman, who is one of his students, and who he calls Susan. She apparently has spent time with him and wants to arrange more. Indy acts busy and suggests meeting later, but Marcus seemingly used to Indy's crushes and entanglements drags him away, to meet the government men. So did Indy originally meet her later?
    Susan was played by English actress Pola Churchill, with an American accent, as the college scenes were shot in England. Interestingly she's not a blonde, or Jean Harlow type as envisaged. Instead being a tanned brunette.

      @@Bulletsandblockbusters Thanks! It's something I noticed a long time ago, as comes from obsessively watching films you grew up on, and looking at every part of the frame because you want to be there. When I read about the intention for the scene at script stage I made the connection. Officially they deleted this at script stage, but as I see it the scene as shot is odd if you don't include the love interest. Indy is waiting for Marcus to come and tell him if the OSS are going to let him go after The Ark. So why does he start drinking Champagne before he has the news? And why is he wearing a dressing gown? Unless they were being inattentive, I can't understand why they'd leave that in if removed at script stage. The costume designer would have to design or pick Indy's dressing gown. They'd need to choose to get and fill two glasses on set. And why is one half filled if intended for Marcus? It seems more like they shot it, as we know they shot the Susan subplot, then decided there to shoot it without her, but for whatever reason didn't change anything on the set. If true I just wish they'd release the footage, as they have with Susan in the corridor. I found out the actress's name after looking her up on IMDb for something else she was in, and seeing her listed as being in Raiders, but Uncredited as Girl in the corridor of the College. She was strikingly attractive, and gives a pretty good performance in the deleted scene.
      Addit: just found this in Trivia section on her IMDb page: "Shot two scenes for Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981) that ultimately ended up on the cutting room floor as Susan, a student of Indiana Jones with whom he was having an affair. The first scene had her interrupting Indy and Brody as they recount his troubles in Peru. The second scene had her at Indy's house when Brody arrived". Obviously anyone could have added that, but I like to think Pola did to her profile.

    Tom Selleck is a great actor but I dont think he would have stuck to the 3 picture deal. Magnum PI was a hit but began to loose ratings after the second season and Selleck wanted out . Ford on the other hand has stuck with Jones and Solo for many years and is still working . Raiders may have been a different movie with Selleck but I love the one we got.

    I think Tom Selleck would've been a successful Indiana Smith/Jones. Still there's no denying that Harrison Ford personified Indy. Its said that another influence on Indy was the pulp magazine adventurer/scientist Doc Savage, the Man of Bronze.
    Its too bad though that the last two Indy films didn't get as much love or respect as the original trilogy. Other McGuffins Indy could've pursued were The Spear of Destiny (said to used to pierce Christ during the Crucifixtion), Excalibur, or Yamashita's Treasure, for example.

    • @matthewdaley746
      @matthewdaley746 2 месяца назад

      The Roman Catholic Church, was going through the abuse scandal, so, I think that, possibly, could have led to a crippling boycott, Excalibur, had, already, been done to death, and, Yamashita's Treasure, was, probably, too risky, considering, the way that the Japanese would, have, likely, been portrayed, which, possibly, could have caused the film not to be released in Japan, which would have been catastrophically costly.
