I don't believe the actual story is real, but the conditions on the Great Lakes are famous for changing without warning. In the song, the boy told the man that he'd met a young girl in spring. She is back home, her eyes red from crying (missing her boyfriend) while the boy is being lost at sea... Stan has a wonderful catalog of beautiful stories. He died in an Air Canada plane crash just as his career was taking off. When it crashed, Stan was one of the first passengers to get off the plane -- but witnesses claim that he went back to the plane. Smoke had filled the cabin and the electricity had gone out so the surviving passengers could not find their way out of the plan. According to these witnesses, Stan stood at the door and called out in his deep baritone voice -- "Follow my voice." He kept calling and dozens of passengers found their way out by following his call. Unfortunately, Stan was eventually overcome by smoke and flame and died. His body was found by the door. Thank you SO MUCH for reacting to Stan and his music!
I know this comment is a year old, but I'd always heard it as "The girl he'd *wed* in spring" as in they were to be married, rather than "The girl he'd *met* in spring" P.S. If I'm not mistaken you are the patron who brought Stan Rogers to Harri's attention, so thank you for that!
Old comment but I just wanna say Stan Rogers sang about heroes his whole life, and he died as one of them. A truly amazing man who died a lot younger than I thought. By all accounts he saved many lives at the expense of his own. That's what heroes do. The man deserves another future Stan Rogers to sing about him. We could only hope to live half the life he did in our time on this Earth. It just shows some people stand up in a crisis and become the shepherds of others, and those men deserve all the praise they get.
Harri he is talking about working on a freighter in the Great Lake when a storm “White Squall” hits. These storms can come out of nowhere and have been know for 100 mph winds. This tends to happen on Lake Superior the largest of the Great Lakes. In 1975 one of the largest Great Lake freighters “The Edmond Fitzgerald” was lost with all hands (29 lives) when it was caught in one of these storms. Gordon Lightfoot wrote a hit song about this disaster called “ The Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald” This was the first time listening to Stan Rogers he has a great voice especially for storytelling.
Harri when you make it too Canada make sure you've learned some of Stan's lyrics. White Squall, Northwest Passage, Mary Ellen Carter and Barrett's Privateers. You'll never pay for a beer from coast to coast to coast. Though they may never let you leave Halifax.
Barrett's Privateers by Stan Rogers is a must!! I have sang that song in the pub with everyone else with us all stomping our feet many times. Cheers 🇨🇦
Yes please do that one! Northwest passage as well! I'm American and the first I heard of Stan Rogers was on a documentary about the plane crash he died in. Was a fan before I heard his music but I truly do love it as well.
@@debbieplato5107 I live in ontario. I know Stan Roger's from my dad. I met a friend from Nova Scotia and he said when ever that song comes on the whole pub sings along
Instant like for doing a Stan reaction. One of my all time favorite singer and writers. I highly recommend Northwest Passage, the unofficial second national anthem of Canada. Also Barretts Privateers and Lies. Honestly any Stan song really lol. Thanks for this from a Nova Scotia boy whose proudest moment was playing on the Rebecca Cohn stage, where Stan's picture hangs in the lobby.
Stan Rogers is one of the great Canadian folk musician & songwriters who sang about the Canadian history & the daily lives of working people, especially those from the fishing villages of the Maritime provinces & the farms of the Canadian prairies & Great Lakes. His best known songs are "Northwest Passage", "Barrett's Privateers", "The Mary Ellen Carter", "Make & Break Harbour", "The Idiot", "Fogarty's Cove" & "White Squall".
My brother Danny Quinn was a folksinger and he loved the wonderful Stan Rogers and sang many of his songs. He was a friend of Stan's brother Garnett, who is a fantastic folksinger himself. Stan died so tragically in an airplane fire. No, only the young man dies . His wife is left to mourn.
Stan was one of the finest folk singer-songwriters that Canada has ever produced. Terrific artist who died in a tragic airplane fire at Cincinnati's airport in June 1983; he was only 33.
Stan Rogers had a blessed gift to find the human aspect of any story and turn it into music. His storytelling skills were so amazing that you feel a part of the events in his songs. Taken from us far too soon, he is one of the all-time greatest Canadian singer/songwriters. I was first introduced to Stan when I helped form my first band. We played many of his songs and all of them were popular with our audiences. On our one, and only, album we received the blessing from Stan's widow to record a live version of Barrett's Privateers. Easily, Stan Rogers is the equal to Gordon Lightfoot.
I live on the Great Lakes, and there is a monument on a nearby pier with hundreds of names on it... Sailors who lost their lives on the lake. This particular story is fiction, but it does happen, over and over. The lakes can be monsters when they choose...
a white squall is a real weather phenomenon on the great lakes. wyrton is a real town is a real town on the great lakes stan rogers is a real legend. his songs tell the truth . sadly stan was killed in an accident many years ago. his songs remain legend.
150 ships were lost in the white squal which is a storm that lasts 10 to 15 min that sinks ships fast. 150 lost. Can't take the lakes for granted. Great lakes Canada
I unfortunately never saw Stan live but I have seen Garnet and Nathan. Others comments have already mentioned other great ones like Northwest Passage, Field Behind the Plow and Barrett’s Privateers. If you want to dive into more Canadian East Coast folk singers - Ron Hynes, Sonny’s Dream / The Rankin Family, We Rise Again / Lennie Gallant, Pieces of You - all great songs.
Thanks for reviewing this song! The two people in the story are supposed to be on a huge iron oar freighter, similar to the Edmond Fitzgerald, on Lake Huron somewhere between Ontario Canada and Michigan U.S.. Sault Saint Marie (the Sue) is at the North end of the lake where the locks are between Lake Superior and Lake Huron. Wharton Ontario is a town on Lake Huron that is known for being the home for many of the officers and crew that work on freighters and other large ships all around the world. Unlike the Edmond Fitzgerald, I believe Stan wrote this song as a fictional story based on a real weather phenomenon that does occur on the Great Lakes and has caused hundreds of ships to sink over the years.
If I may suggest it, you may enjoy the two following Stan Rogers songs -The Field Behind The Plow… and Lies . But to be honest..any Stan Rogers is always enjoyable to me Saw many of his live concerts back in the day.
Lies, and 45 Years, deserve to be famous love songs. Not just a stew of "love, forever, baby...blah blah", like so many songs, they depict profound, lasting devotion, exemplified in glimpses of daily life.
Not a couple. Lake Huron is a massive lake bigger than England. It's really an inland sea. Sault Ste. Marie is the reference when he sing 'north to the sault (sounds like sue). Squalls on the great lakes are notorios. Check out Gordon Lightfoot's Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
Harris, you really seem to get it, as far as Stan goes. Barrett's Privateers is an anthem in parts of Canada. Would love to hear your thoughts all the best.
Wow, someone is reacting to Stan Rogers and they’re not even Canadian. I went to the same high school as Stan but a little after he graduated. He came back and performed once while I was there for an arts festival.
I'm not Canadian... but Stan remains one of my most treasured singer/songwriters. White Squall always makes me cry (for so many reasons). THANK YOU CANADA for giving us your best. The world is truly blessed...
The Great Lakes are the largest collection of fresh water on the planet and are equivalent to inland seas. This particular story may be fictional but there have been thousands of wrecks on the lakes over the centuries and a great many lives lost. Erie in particular can be wild and kick up very quickly when the weather turns bad but all of the lakes can be treacherous.
This singer reminds me very much of Gordon Lightfoot. I don’t know which one influenced the other but there must have been an association. This sounds nice but it is a sad story. 🌺✌️
Hey Harri, just signed up patron because your reactions are so real and very interesting; thanks. Please react to Jim Croce song "Lover's Cross." Thanks.
This song and the Stompin Tom song "Around the Bay and Back Again" are roughly the only songs that mention Wiarton, Ontario, which is better known for its Groundhog Day.
It sounds like this fictional story takes place near Sault St Marie. Wiarton is a town in Ontario. THe Great lakes are notorious for their bursts of violence especially in the fall.
Aboard a ship on the great lakes. The seasonded salors know that the lakes can turn on you in the blink of an eye, but sometimes you don't learn that respect until it's too late. I don't like the backing on this recording. Well, I say backing, but that's one of the problems, the so-called backing is too far forward. I'd love someone - with great taste - to take the vocal track and add a more sympathetic accompaniment.
This is another one of Stan Rogers' songs that just brings tears to my eyes each time. He was indeed a masterful storyteller and musician.
Stan Rogers??? Wow! You are the first I’ve seen to find him! Mary Ellen Carter has to be next!!! Awesome thanks

oooohhh Stan Rogers. So many good songs. I recommend "The Bluenose" and "First Christmas Away From Home" (a heartbreaker).

I adore Mary Ellen Carter. Perfect song when you feel awful.

Stan Rogers, I'd recommend checking out Northwest passage. An amazing song about an equally amazing backstory.

Thanks for reviewing Stan, who died to early but left a great catalogue of work. Not well known as many very good musicians are
He's very well known in a lot of circles, such as some rennfest folk, down here in America. Such a shame he was taken so early. He had so much talent.
My friend's brother died on Lake Erie in such a squall. IIRC this is from an album of songs about the Great Lakes.

Stan was influenced by Lightfoot.
Based on many stories. Read the lyrics and look up White Squall. Roger’s has a voice that sounds like a cross between Roger Whittaker and Lightfoot.
