    My Dad caught our neighbor with a cord plugged into our house (before cell phones & CCTV). He just unplugged it then walked to the property line, cut the cord AT the property line, and then every 12 inches on our side until he reached the socket. He then dropped the pieces into our neighbor's yard. He never said a word to our neighbor, nor did they say anything to us!

      Something similar happened at our mountain cabin back in the 70's. Dad found the neighboring cabin plugged in to our out side outlets. Being an electrician, Dad just rewired the outlet to be 220 instead of the normal 110 and sat back to see what happened. Neighbor came over the next day and asked if we were having issues with our electricity as nothing was working in his cabin . . . wonder why ??

      A cousin and her family had a similar issue with water. They had a hookup out in their yard, and another family daily went to her house to steal water. I said steal because they just took it. She would have given it to them if they had asked. They finally had it capped off.

    I remember someone calling me up about a "great" (dogshit) position and saying one of my former bosses said I would love it. When I said I would pass on it for the 40% pay cut, he said we would talk to the person that recommended me and how disappointed he would be. I pointed out I was at my old bosses funeral so good luck. Dude hung up on me.

    Adam story: A good, quick-thinking officer deescalating the situation and getting potential victims out of the line of possible fire. Well done sir!
    Nails story: He needed HELP scanning one package of batteries? Good grief!
    Take turns to merge story: RW, people running up to the front of the line to cut-in instead of taking turns merging when they should have is, unfortunately, very common. I'm a retired truck driver. If I had a dime for every time I was cut-off at a merge point when driving a semi, I'd have retired a very wealthy man.
    Stealing electricity story: You were much nicer than I would have been. After unplugging the cord from the outlet, I would have cut the cord into several pieces as a warning not to try it again. If they had a legitimate issue, they should have asked permission first, with an offer to pay for the extra electrical usage.

      Three phase in a residential area? How many houses burned down from the 480 volts? I was an industrial electrician for over 14 years. There is no scenario in the U.S. where there would be a 3 phase connection anywhere near a residential building. That would ensure everything in those buildings connected to the power would burn out and melt down. On 3 phase electricity, even a single wire is 240 volts, two wires are 480 volts. Most household appliances are rated for 120 volts, 140 volts maximum.

      @@jeffreyarnold2626 Dryers, Overs etc. use 240 volts 2 phase. # phase is strictly heavy industrial wiring. On a 3 phase wiring system, each wire carries 240 volts. Any two together makes that 480 volts. They use 3 wires mostly for electric motors as you can control the direction of a motor by swapping two of the wires. That works for 3 phase motors. With a 240 volt 2 phase motor you have to have a starter capacitor to kick it over in the direction you want it to run.

    All outdoor outlets should have a switch inside the house. When an extension cord is discovered, unplug it, cut it at the property line, buy and install a replacement socket on the cut end, and you have a free extension cord.

    The first story reminds me of a story about a lady whose S/O was on something, taking her and her kids hostage. Though he took her cell phone she convinced him to let her use the pizza hut app to get food for the kids. She managed to slip an S.O.S into the comments. Fortunately they were regular customers, which meant it was taken more seriously. The cops arrived and managed to talk the S/O down peacefully.

    I love the rental car story. Years ago, decades ago to be honest, I was going down the street in front of a shipyard at end of shift time. It was bumper to bumper on the street and this one car kept trying to force his way into traffic. The car in front of me would inch forward, I would inch forward and he would try to force his way in between us to cut in line. As things progressed he finally stuck his nose out in front of my bumper just as I was inching up once more and I crunched him.
    Now it was at minimal speed and I just gave him a small dent in his fender. He jumped out and started yelling about all kinds of foolishness. He was going to get the cops, etc. I simply pointed to the cop just up the street and said "There's one right there, go get him and I'll laugh while he cites you for failure to yield right of way". He got back in his car and I went on my merry way, no damage to the bumper on my newish ('87 F-150) truck. They made bumpers out of fairly heavy steel back then...

    That last story about the "Kilowatt Bandits" with the extension cord plugged into your outlet, I would have done it a lot different. Understand that I've worked power plants for my whole adult life so dealing with electricity is NBD for me. I would have rigged a jumper to the 220 line with a 110 outlet and plugged them into that. It would likely fry whatever they had on the other end but what were they going to do about it? Admit to utility theft?

      You need to be careful doing that...
      If you running twice the expected Voltage down the wire to their equipment hurts someone or damages something, YOU can be held Criminally Liable for the damage and/or injury...
      It doesn't matter that they were stealing electricity from you, you deliberately tried to cause harm so they get dinged for Theft of Services and you get hammered for Criminal Negligence, Destruction of Property (if the 220V damaged something) and/or Assault Causing Bodily harm/Manslaughter if the device hurt or killed someone when the 220V hit it...
      Better to just call the Police and show them the extension cord and tell them you want to Press Criminal Trespassing and Theft of Services Charges against whomever the cord leads to and let them deal with it...

    • @jammer68
      @jammer68 3 месяца назад

      @HappilyHomicidalHooligan Pretty much every house in the U.S. use the same wires for both 120 and 240 volts. If you ever do any wiring, there isn't any difference between the wiring of an electric dryer or stove and a 120 volt light socket or plugin. The reason for this is, it's much simpler to buy one type of wire and use it for the entire home than buying 2-3different types and run each type to specific places. That means, if you know how, you can rewire a plugin to have a 220 volt output with the same 120 volt wires. The biggest issue would be that usually there are multiple outlets on a single circuit and you could be sending 240 volts to your TV or PC and burn them out as well.

    • @HappilyHomicidalHooligan
      @HappilyHomicidalHooligan 3 месяца назад

      @@jammer68 I'm an Electrician, I'm aware that the wires themselves are rated for 240V, my comment was referring to what the 240V you send down the wire hits when it reaches the receptacle at the other end...
      The WIRES may not care if they're carrying 120 or 240V, but the toaster, hairdryer, light bulb, clock etc. PLUGGED INTO the wires sure as heck will care...
