  • Today we have a very special ride because of construction works. Maybe you now think: again?! Last time you had construction works as well! Yes, you're correct! And this video was also recorded in the weekend. During the weekend most of the construction works take place in Holland.
    We start our journey in 's Hertogenbosch (Den Bosch). Normally I don't drive train here but I know the route because the shifts on the HSL bring me to Eindhoven (via 's Hertogenbosch) when trains are diverted on their way to the Watergraafsmeer (Amsterdam). Because there are construction works today all shifts have been changed and that why I get to drive this train.
    After our departure from 's Hertogenbosch we drive the train to Utrecht. That's pretty normal acutully, but today two train series have been coupled together. For that reason we take the train from Utrecht to the Airport in Amsterdam and from there on we continue our journey towards Rotterdam.
    In Rotterdam another driver took over the train and then continued to Dordrecht with it. But that didn't fit in my shift for that day. That's why we get off in Rotterdam.
    So, it's going to be a long but easy ride. Sometimes you'll see we have a very small delay but that is no biggy! At all the stops that are upcoming we arrive perfectly on time again.
    Oh and another fun fact: in Leiden you will see loads of people expecting the train to stop a little further at the platform. And I agree with them. But the driver also follows the signs on the rail roads. In Leiden you can see the blue/white signs giving the stop place from the train. To have all trains stop at the B-side of the station (and not partly on the junctions) those signs need to be replaced with fully blue signs (2/4/6/8/10/12). It's a long story... But until that is done trains will keep stopping at this place when they have four carriages and come straight from the A-side of the platform. Can be very annoying.
    Alright! That's it for this week folks! Next week there will be a WARP SPEED version of this video again. If you have questions you know how to contact me! Cheers!

      If you can call £11.47 in 8 weeks "serious'" money then you would be right. However, we have over 100 PREVIEWS of our DVD, Blu-ray and Download railway productions on RUclips to give people a good idea of what they are going to buy. As these are effectively adverts, there is no way we would wish to monetize them. They are FREE of external adverts. Why do we charge for the discs etc? Because of the cost to produce. It genuinely costs thousands of pounds to produce each one. That was really the point of my original comment.

    Stefan, this was a great ride again. I am learning I need to read your comments BEFORE I view the video. You answered several questions I was going to ask, in your notes. You were not as descriptive back in these old days and I love it how you tell us where lines are diverging to or coming from these days. Had seen that construction work at Delft and Rijwijk on someone else's video. I guess that must be all finished now. Tell me which video to look for that. I had seen my first 12 car Double Deck on another video. Good you explained why there would be a 14 car one. Good you explained why folks were getting caught with the shorter train than expected. I commented on another video where that train stopped at Rijwijk that the escalators may have only been in operation on the platform when needed as it was still at first then I saw people riding it, nearer departure time?? Thanks again, keep the descriptiveness coming. Some different stations and you explained why at the beginning.

    • @MachinistStefan
      @MachinistStefan  3 года назад +1

      Hi Geoffrey! True fact... I'm adding more details to the description now than I did in the past. One of the reasons why I publish video's ones in every two weeks now instead of every week. :)
      The work between Rijswijk and Delft Zuid is still ongoing. Big project. In one of my latest video's you can see an update about Delft.
      Elevators are always working (if not faulty). This because people need to get off of the platform at any time. At Rijswijk both platforms are always in use by the way. :)

    Beautiful country - amazing bridge architecture.
    When you write that you "know the route" - does this mean you "know" each change of track, or perhaps the Stations on that route?
    You write that it will "be an easy drive" - is this perhaps because of the long long straight sections of the route?
    When I see "Temporary Vmax" - what does the V stand for - surely not Voltage?
    Are the chimes and appearance of speed indicators generated by the Train Manager relative to the many factors on the route?. Obviously "Prepare to Stop" is obvious.
    When you have a change of speed indicated - how long does it take to slow to that speed? And how long to reach a higher speed?
    I saw lots of construction sites, but did not see any workers?
    Does your daily schedule usually or often give you weekends off? In a previous answer to me, you noted the hours you usually drive in a day.

    • @MachinistStefan
      @MachinistStefan  4 года назад

      Hi Paul,
      1. The driver must know the route completely. We also get to drive trains in the mist with almost no view at all. :)
      2. No, just a ride with no particular delays or something.
      3. Haha, in this case it's just the speed. To be honest Vmax is not the correct term for it. In Airlines the V stands for knots. But I use it for km/h. If I would change it, what would you prefer?
      4. All speeds etc are added to the video by me. ;)
      5. All signal are on braking distance from each other (for all trains). Gaining speed depends on many factors. Weather, weight, train type etc...
      6. Workers also work at night.
      7. I'm working weekend on and off.... So I have 25 normal weekends a year.

      @@MachinistStefan Learning so much. How fun. Thanks.
      I'm still confused about "knowing the route completely" - There are obvious direction changes of track, for different destinations, where you are to cut off to the right or left - perhaps THIS is what is meant by "Knowing"?

    • @MachinistStefan
      @MachinistStefan  4 года назад

    • @MachinistStefan
      @MachinistStefan  4 года назад +2

      De stroomafnemers gaan hier op NL-materieel naar maximale hoogte. De bovenleiding loopt daar omhoog zodat het contact met de bovenleiding verloren gaat. I'm curious... if you're putting the speed transitions up -- which, thank you, I love that -- would it be possible to leave the current speed on screen the whole time instead of only for 5 seconds during each transition? Just a couple words of text in one of the corners. Or actually, if you wanted to get fancy, you could have two different speeds listed, the line speed and the signal speed at any given point, which would help beginners understand what each signal/signpost means. In theory, since you already go through the fuss of putting the speed transitions in the video, leaving the speed up the whole time shouldn't be too much more work than currently... just a wild thought.

    • @Zerk1978
      @Zerk1978 4 года назад

      He used to do that in his earlier videos (still available on this channel), but it takes a lot of time and effort to put those numbers in the video. There is unfortunately no way to stream the speed of the train and the allowed speed and merge this into the video. Another option would be to use a second camera and film the speed dial, but that would require a second camera on a place where it would interfere with the operation of the train. As I understand it, NS and her personnel have agreed on conditions on taking pictures in the cabin, which actually only allow the front facing wind screen camera. Train drivers have to be able to focus on operating the train at all times.

    • @UnshavenStatue
      @UnshavenStatue 4 года назад

      @@Zerk1978 1) Drivers can still record the speedometer, because such videos are still being posted, though I understand it's quite a pain to have two cameras these days, and 2) I wasn't asking about the actual speed, only the speed limits, which he *already* puts into his videos, including this one :) just that they stay on screen instead of disappearing after 5s

      Dat was een test van de tyfoon. Op elke trein moet een keer per 24 uur een test worden gedaan of die het nog doet.

      @@nielsmallant2710 Nou eigenlijk niet, want ik zag daar echt een donkergrijze wolk hangen, precies op die plek. Misschien moest die wolk spontaan huilen omdat zijn broertjes niet mee wilden doen met regenen.
