Between us, we estimate that the number of surgical procedures we've done or been involved in which addressed transgender complications, totals under 20. That's an average of one every three years. Why is such a tiny, marginal issue for 99 percent of Americans taking up so much of the political oxygen?
Because transgender people represent a challenge to the idea of the gender hierarchy. People who were assigned boys are living as women. People assigned women are living as men. Other people are neither. The gender hierarchy relies on these positions in the system being fixed, unchangeable, and only assigned by those in power. In order to come after cisgender women who may violate the gender roles they want to enforce, they have to go after transgender people for rejecting their assigned gender.
