The racism in the comments is disgusting. Born and raised New Orleans here, 6th generation. Sallie Anne went to Haiti and earned her title. Period. Spirit does not see color. New Orleans voodoo is its own entity. If you are not born and raised in New Orleans and know about our history and culture and how New Orleans voodoo came to be what it is today. Please go educate yourself. Also, stop the racism, it’s getting old.

Salvation in Jesus Christ is FREE.

I experience much anger as I see whites celebrating the spiritual practices that were forcibly removed from my ancestors as they were given a foreign god. Growing up in a Haitian Christian home I was indoctrinated to believe these practices are evil & demonic. As I learn more about Sallie Ann Glassman and the work she has done and is doing I am becoming grateful that she adopted these traditions and is serving her communities with it. Mama Rama let’s not pretend that New Orleans was devoid of racism. Voodoo is a form of African spirituality that was created by my ancestors to continue to practice while being enslaved so that they may honor their heritage in hiding under the guise of worshiping catholic saints. You are speaking of a free person of color who happened to practice publicly at that time. However, let’s not be so naive to think that Marie didn’t have to be “inclusive” if she wanted to stay free in her practices. That time wasn’t peaceful for my ancestors, and seeing their history being watered down by people who choose to appropriate it is offensive to them. If you were to channel a few of my ancestors as a medium to ask how they feel about their history being made for profit by people who are NOT their descendants I don’t think your answer would be the picture you are trying to paint.
