      Education should address you interests and its hidden implications reached by intrigue and curiosity, that's why educational videos in RUclips are so popular. But unfortunately we live in a world where curiosity can only sustain those privileged high end researchers that have their careers being built from a really early age. They are the ones that can drift away from our educational systems that mainly focus in building a profession that favors production, social services and industry. For the rest of us, we can only have curiosity as a hobby :/

    The annoying thing about ocean iron fertilization is that the results can be absolutely tremendous if we give it a serious effort, but those effects may not last long. Some hypothesis claim that all extra carbon in the atmosphere can be sequestered in this way, and we could get back down to pre-industrial levels in a couple of decades. But, some also believe that despite such huge amounts of carbon sequestration that is acheivable, most of that carbon will eventually get back to the atmosphere over a few days, to a few thousand years, depending on where it ends up.
    Then there's the idea of the effects of ocean iron fertilization on the ecosystem. It's one of the cheapest ways to sequester carbon, but a 2013 analysis showed that CSS and carbon taxes have a higher cost/benefit ratio than ocean iron fertilization. But still! The idea that we can get carbon dioxide to 300ppm within a few decades, and that we have the ability to do it by just dumping the contents of a bunch of cargo ships full of iron into the ocean is just so cool!

      While it would be neat, these environmentalist-ish concepts never account for all the oil these schemes use.
      Like just think about how much oil you'd have to burn to do that?
      There's no way THAT be more efficient than using all that oil to mine those four super abundant elements right here IN the gravity well. This is something you might do on mars...if you had the energy. Probably need a damn reactor lol
      You know, by the way, you can get an idea as to how much oil something burns simply by looking at the cost of something. Human labor only outputs maybe 2000 Kilocals. per an 8hr labor shift, while his day's wage affords him about 1,280,000 Kilcals just at the gas pump, (meaning basically anything you buy or build is almost all oil [vs labor], like 98), but more importantly, the cost of something is basically telling you how much oil you're burning to do it.
      This can go for renewables too since they will rely on oil for manufacture and maintenance until we can find a cheaper source than simply putting a big straw in the ground and sucking up these potent flammables.......and then theyll rely on that new power source lol. I hope fusion power works out, because otherwise we are stuck on a plateau of energy production.

    Also - I did an experiment during my sophomore year of high school to grow plants in a Martian-esque environment (It didn't really work, but it wasn't that good of an experiment either). Does this mean that the soil on Mars is sufficient for plants (Mars' environment is chemically pretty "meteorite-y")? I would be happy to revisit the experiment to try it out.

    • @Zigglegarf
      @Zigglegarf 2 года назад +5

      Well, the lack of oxygen in the atmosphere (and the near-total absence of an atmosphere altogether) would suggest that any trace elements in the soil would be much more likely to be in a non-oxidized, more bio-available form, but Martian soil is absolutely loaded with perchlorates, which is extremely poisonous to vertebrates. So while you might be able to grow plants in Martian soil, any produce that results would be inedible. The soil would have to be heavily and strictly processed for anything grown in it to be safe to eat.
      Ironically, as poisonous as they are, the perchlorate salts in Martian soil may be responsible for retaining a great deal of the planet's residual water, providing a potential source of drinking water and rocket fuel.

    • @hughmilner7013
      @hughmilner7013 2 года назад +2

      It's also not just the perchlorates - even if you get the major toxins out of the soil, you are left with a pile of ground rock with some necessary trace elements. Earth's soil is as much a set of basic compounds as it is an active ecosystem, and while it is by now very good at establishing itself in some pretty inhospitable environments, it does so because it has a near-endless source of "seed" organisms from the rest of the biosphere.
      Cody's experiment created a pretty limited ecosystem, and even then it was sourced from a "natural" environment (the water tank might be manmade, but it's developing the standard "standing pool of water" ecosystem from exposure to the outside). Algae and the organisms that survive alongside it don't make for a great long-term environment, and a small soil sample could easily result in a few runaway organisms (especially if some, but not all, of the organisms can survive in the new soil after its first round of cleaning).

      I kind of disagree in that carbon dioxide probably isn't going to stop being a problem any time soon. Having a robust way to remove it from the atmosphere at massive scale would be useful in general.
      An underdiscussed, imo, issue of higher CO2 levels is that CO2 affects us at relatively low levels, only a couple of times higher than present atmospheric levels. We know that these low elevated levels cause cognitive impairment, but afaik, we don't have much knowledge about the effects of prolonged exposure.
      And we already reach those levels routinely in enclosed spaces, like buildings, and vehicles (yikes). The higher the baseline CO2 level is the faster we reach levels that negatively impact us, and the harder it is to ventilate those spaces sufficiently.

    Pro tip: if you want to draw on a glass pane don't draw a flipped image, instead simply flip the video horizontally at the end.

    I'd love to know what rate that was consuming CO2 at. Maybe figure out how many of those bottles you'd need to sustain one human.

    Man I didnt even consider the possibility you being serious about this as a viable concept until the end. Thought it was just a what if type of thing. Im glad to see theres that kind of wild ambitious thinking of what the future can hold instead of simply fearing it. Very optimistic. Also didnt know about ocean fertilization until now. Awesome concepts. Great video!

    Wouldn't the burning sand particles oxidize when they go through the atmosphere making them unusable to the plants?

    • @beskamir5977
      @beskamir5977 2 года назад

      Oh good, I'm not the only one who immediately thought of that. I guess we could still make it work buy shipping it down to earth in a less disassembled way and then moving it to where it's needed? Although if it's prone to oxidation it'd probably oxidize in the water/air while being transported to the organisms that need it so it'd have to be combined with something that'd keep that from happening which I suppose could be done in orbit before dumping it on the planet.
      Yea nvm that might actually work if it's combined in space with something to make it more stable and heating those it won't ruin those oxygen resistant compounds containing the element in a usable form.

      Quite likely, and the resulting aerosol particles would stay in in the atmosphere for years, so be impossible to apply to a location.

    You didn’t address how much meteoroid material was actually dropping to the earth right now.

      15000 tons estimated every year. It is irrelevant in the scale Cody is considering. Like a minuscule error when dealing in tens of millions of tons.
