Country-Musik, kurz auch Country [ˈkʌntri] genannt, ist eine aus den USA stammende Musikrichtung, die Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts aus traditionellen Elementen der Volksmusik der europäischen Zuwanderervölker - insbesondere aus Irland und England - hervorging. Die ursprünglich in den südlichen Appalachen beheimatete Old-Time Music entwickelte sich durch urbane Einflüsse und Übernahme von Elementen anderer Musik-Genres - wie des Blues - zur Country-Musik.
Der oft als Synonym gebrauchte Begriff Country & Western beziehungsweise C&W ist irreführend, da er suggeriert, dass es sich hierbei um ein einheitliches Genre handle. Der Begriff geht zurück auf eine Chart-Bezeichnung, unter der das amerikanische Billboard-Magazine in den 1940er Jahren Titel aus den Genres Country- und Western-Musik gemeinsam aufgelistet hat.
Die Geschichte der Country-Musik ist durch drei sich überschneidende Bewegungen geprägt:
-Die Traditionalisten befürworten eine Rückbesinnung auf die ursprünglichen textlichen und musikalischen Themen.
-Die Erneuerer experimentieren mit neuen Stilvarianten, Ausdrucksformen und Instrumenten.
-Die Kommerzorientierten suchen die Nähe zur Popmusik, um ein möglichst großes Publikum anzusprechen.
Ein typisches Merkmal der Country-Musik sind direkte Texte, die sich oft auf die amerikanischen Lebensverhältnisse beziehen, persönliche Erfahrungen beschreiben, aktuelle Ereignisse kommentieren und nicht selten auch humorvoll sind.
Beim traditionellen Country werden hauptsächlich Saiteninstrumente wie Gitarre, Banjo, Mandoline, Kontrabass oder Fiddle (eine einfache Geige), aber auch Akkordeon, Klavier oder Mundharmonika verwendet. Im zeitgenössischen Country kommen in Anlehnung an die Instrumentierung der Rockmusik Schlagzeug sowie Elektrogitarre und -Bass hinzu.
Country music, also known as country [ˈkʌntri] for short, is a style of music that originated in the USA and that emerged at the beginning of the 20th century from traditional elements of the folk music of European immigrant peoples - especially from Ireland and England. Originally native to the southern Appalachian Mountains, old-time music evolved into country music through urban influences and borrowing elements from other music genres-like the blues.
The term Country & Western or C&W, which is often used as a synonym, is misleading because it suggests that this is a uniform genre. The term goes back to a chart designation under which the American Billboard magazine listed titles from the genres country and western music together in the 1940s.
The history of country music is marked by three overlapping movements:
-The traditionalists advocate a return to the original textual and musical themes.
-The innovators experiment with new styles, forms of expression and instruments.
-The commercially oriented ones are looking for proximity to pop music in order to appeal to as large an audience as possible.
A typical feature of country music are direct lyrics, which often refer to American living conditions, describe personal experiences, comment on current events and are often humorous.
Traditional country mainly uses stringed instruments such as guitar, banjo, mandolin, double bass or fiddle (a simple violin), but also accordion, piano or harmonica. In contemporary country, based on the instrumentation of rock music, drums and electric guitar and bass are added.
