In the previous Episode, Team Avatar comes back from the Forgetful Valley with Zuko’s mother and her family. On the other end Ukano sees an old spirit named Kemurikage who orders him to overthrow Lord Zuko and bring back Ozai. He plots a plan to threat zuko and his family but fails. Then the Kemurikage’s starts kidnapping kids starting from Tom-Tom, Mai’s Brother.
In this Episode, Lord Zuko sends message to Aang to help him out with the spirit stuff as he is the only bridge between the physical and spirit world. Zuko takes everyone to the Sages Temple to see the Burial place of all past Fire Lord’s to find out about Kemurikage’s.

It's crazy to think that between then and now, about 6 or 7 plot cycles occur to shape the world that Korra knew with all these complex political challenges interlaced within
Then later Korra fights a Kaju or something I don't remember. Anyway by the time Zuko is gray, it doesn't seem like he has much at play at all. His reign is so nuanced here. Like he's the main character when Aang is not around
I'd argue that Aang's role is more supportive actually. They treat him like the pitcher in the 9th inning. This maybe a byproduct of his personality but it suits him really well.
