I work for Benjamin Moore and I worked for Sherwin Williams. The issue is that Sherwin Williams touts their Cashmere and Superpaint to be comparable to Regal Select. So your assessment of comparing them to mid or lower grade products is correct. Regal would out perform all of them. Knowing what I know though. The volume solids (% of dry film when it dries) is higher on Super paint than it is on the Ben....but they seem to perform the same. So Superpaint should out perform Ben. But it did not really. Our Gennex tint system is because of that. It adds resin to the coating which strengthens the coating, and add more hiding capabilities. While Sherwin Williams universal tint actually thins and weakens the coating. Also Sherwin Williams uses vinyl acrylic technology for all of their interior paints. Which is full of calcium carbonate or talc powder as a pigment, vs TiO2. Which we use instead, as well as our premium interior products are 100% acrylic. So you get what you pay for...and you don't get what you won't pay for. When 80-90% of a job is labor. Why would you chance it?
doc hall you will get what you pay for. Superpaint is a much better product than Promar 200. But it is still a vinyl acrylic. SW is trying to compete with Home Depot which is why they will sell it cheaper and cheaper. But do you think they will improve the product, even though they have to reduce their selling price???
I have always preferred the Benjamin Moore Regal and coloring through tint system. I agree. Too bad most of their stores no longer exist and it's hard to find.
Excellent review. Thanks for taking the time to do this test. Professional painter here in Pennsylvania. I use paints from both stores weekly depending what Im doing. I do use Ultra Spec a lot on rentals & get it for a good contractor price. For a few dollars more Superpaint is well worth it & covers better. It also comes down to if your doing cover over jobs or diverse color changes. Regal select is an excellent paint in many ways but is def. thicker and a lil tougher to apply than SW Duration. That paint goes on the easiest of any paint Ive ever used. Ultra Spec doesnt cover the best if the walls are beat up or your color change is a lil different. ben & superpaint are about the same in my experience w ben being a lil easier to apply. You def. get what you pay for with these paints. I try to give my customers the best when I can also. As a painter, they make the job easier and yourself a much better painter. Lastly Ive used big box paints (behr/valspar/ppg) through the years and in gen., none of them are as good as these two companies. Just my two cents and years of painting experience.
I really like what you had you say I'm a foreman at a company here in Sacramento California and we use super paint on most of our jobs for exterior and interior I do know that Benjamin Moore on their super premium high-end has been tested to have the highest solid content out of all of them except it's hard to find a dealer here the only places that carry Benjamin Moore are at like Ace Hardware and trying to do with that is pretty much impossible and two it's hard to justify paying $350 for a 5 gallon of Benjamin Moore paint
As a pro-painter I use SW promar200. Prices vary by sheen and product. I use Benjamin Moore advance for cabinets, molding and trim but pay full price for a gallon and that cost is in the $60.00 range so I always add the cost of that in my cabinet paint bids. Here in CO/SPR Benjamin Moore is not in a user friendly location and discounts are not given like SW. Great Tutorial and keep up the good work...
Prices for promar is at contractor price at level for dyi. I’m a manager at a SW, and you wouldn’t pay 66 or 58 for promar. You would most likely pay between level a pricing and c which can be between 21-35.
Sekekama WoW this is one thing that drives me crazy about SW. Their pricing is ridiculous. I did not creat it, but I can’t quote random numbers bc it all depends on volume. I did the same thing with BMs pricing...quoting retail. A gallon of BM Ultra Spec will not be at full retail either, but it will be far closer than what a gal of SW 200 would be bc SW hyper-inflates their retail prices. So annoying!
This is a good video, but when it comes to price comparison it would be nice to know the chemistry behind the paints - are the more expensive paints using binders that provide for a longer life and better surface wear characteristics, etc?
Next time I would suggest labeling the paint lines using A, B, C..., rather than 1, 2, 3..., as to not confuse the number labels with the paint ranking you gave each one. Too many numbers. However, I do appreciate the video and everything you shared with us. Thanks so much!
This comparison really helps me, personally. We don’t use the cheapest paints but we also don’t use the most premium on our rentals, but the price point difference is amazing, especially since we always do 2-coats regardless. Finally have a BM store opening near us which we’re looking forward to trying out and comparing to our SW use.

Ok coverage and price point is important. But dark colours and light colours will cover different. How about a base1 paint and a base 2/3 paint and see if they are consistent? Now the next most important thing is how do they level (leave streaks/ go back and touch up a roller line 10 minutes later and see if it leaves a different texture? With Behr paint you can not do a roller touch up after 2 minutes and leaves roller lines the easiest if you apply uneven pressure to your roller stroke. The most important feature is how does it cut with a brush. Ex. BEN goes on like butter spreads smooth and easy. Behr any indoor paint of theirs goes on like glue. You can instantly feel the paint pulling against your brush as you do a second stroke. I don't have experience with Sherman Williams. Also some of these paints (are 2 in one) have primer within them others don't. And that adds to the price differences.

Right on Nick. I know you’re a Benny Moore guy. That’s how you know somebody who loves the trade and is not biased we all prefer our companies and we need to quit having the argument over who’s better. Because if you’re a good painter you really can make anything work. I love Sherwin products I do a lot of exteriors. In my eyes though Benjamin Moore is the only close products to Sherwin.

Roller touch-ups, brush touch-ups? 3) Which white trim paint covers best when painting simply white over a creamy white? 4) Which paint can handle being washed a bit? Did I miss anything?
You guys are not getting it. He was comparing the two companies and their lower grade products. Of course contractor price points will change pricing, of course the products aren't contaminated, of course the same roller covers were used for all roll-outs. Now I want everyone to realize that the Promar paints are considered contractor paints. They should not be used by DIY customers and is probably one of the reasons it's priced that way. Superpaint is one on the premium paints. Also remember that Sherwin-Williams paint is almost always on sale at at least 30% off and 40% off at least 4 times a year. Also Sherwin-Williams offers Paint Perks that gives Paint Perks customers 10% off even when there isn't a sale.
I get pro-mar 200 for 14$ it has no body to it. I switched to the Super Paint get it for 25$ it has a paint & primer in it. Great Test! I knew the 400 was gonna be last lol

Nice comparison. I used both of them and I usually use either BM hide primer and BM premium grade paint, or 2 coats of the Super Paint from SW. The worse experience was Dulux contractor grade primer and paint, I painted the house 5 times to get it covered. Called their rep to look and they took a wall sample and they said they can get it cover in just 1 coat primer and 1 coat paint! They came and watched me paint the 3rd coat on the the wall here and his eye browse was in his forehead, he couldn't believe it. He tried it himself with their own Dulux 11mm microfiber and still couldn't do it. Well he just gave me just enough to finish the house 4 coats of paint!! Lost money on that job especially in labour. I also tried their Dulux Diamond line premium and was not as good as the SW permium. Not as durable, still needs 2 coats of Dulux and 1 nice thick coat with the SW.

Ultra Spec 500 is by far the best bang for the buck today. Sherwin Williams has gutted the hide performance of ProMar200 and ProMar400. And increased the prices by 40%.
super paint takes the win that's all we use at the company that I work for...i'm a foreman there... we use super paint for interior and exterior most of the time..if we're trying to price competitively will use promar 200 for our interior...which most of the time covers in two coats but other than that will use super paint like 90% of the time along with Emerald urathane trim...for paint contractors I think Sherwin-Williams has good customer service and the store managers always take care of us...love the demonstration AND before covid we used to get super paint at like I don't know $26 a gallon maybe 27 and now I think it's like 32 so for a five it's like 140 a 5gal.. my boss(the owner probably spends 50-70k a year there.. we aren't that big compared to other companies, but I feel like the bigger the company, the worse the quality

Ive done my research and many pros say not to use just the paint with primers in them. Those paints with primer in them do nothing. You always want to use a primer like Zinsser 123 or Kilz primer before painting because it will save you money in the long run. Using a good quality primer is also cheaper than paint to and you wont have to use as many coats of paint and if you have bought paint before its alot higher cost than primer. Your overall results will turn out better as well by using a primer and paint.
The paint does not have any gender bias. Women can paint as well as anyone else can. I remember helping my single mom paint when I was eight years old (she was a nurse full time and in grad school). The paint/primer in one is a marketing gimmick. As the Ghetto man notes, you will get far better results always using a real primer first (I like BM Fresh Start) high hide.
Two coats all the time! It’s not about coverage when comes to lasting and scuff longevity quality paint. Better does better and lasts better. I’ll pay more
@Mike Bell I have PPG locally... Speedhide interior is the worst product I have ever used. All 3 times so not a bad batch. It does clean well so I wouldn't say it is a *super* cheap product (cough promar destroys my brushes/rollers) but it certainly doesn't cover well at all.
@Mike Bell yup I like the Ben line a lot. Not amazed by regal. Actually prefer Behr. Most customers/painters find it "taboo" but it is my favorite on application. Used a lot of Pro mar on commercial jobs. It is... Meh. Gets the job done. I DO like break through actually. If thats their waterborne alkyd I used it on some cabs myself with good results
@walls by design: Great attempt to provide customers, perspective. I do have a few issues with this type of testing: 1. You are testing hiding of the products not coverage. Coverage is a measure of sq feet of surface covered per gallon at a certain film thickness 2. The lighting in the room isn't consistent (shadows etc.) conclusively make recommendations 3. As I understand you are testing eggshells that are tinted to be grey. For a comparison, all greys would have to be identical, since even a slight change in darkness can improve the hiding 4. The price points of the products also include other performance benefits (burnish, dry time, appearance, feel etc.) not just hiding. All paint products are not created equal. Factoring those attributes may lead to the same contractor choosing a different product. Great attempt and keep the videos coming!!
Depends on who you talk to. All reps talk as you do in #1 above, but painters talk like I do. Yea, the lighting could have been better. I also want to use more of a white next time. Yep, sheen might make a bit of a difference too. Did not think of that. Price point is hard but this is mainly BC SW jacks around with this all too much. Trying to explain this. Walls by Design not sure how you can state Ben Moore’s retail when all Ben Moore’s are franchises. The owner of the store sets the price resulting in huge inconsistencies across North America. I have 3 Ben Moore’s in my city and they all have different retail prices.
One way to bring the price down from all the paint stores. Is to open an account with all of them and then and then compare your prices and tell that to your rep that you get in the a better deal at the competition. I paid about 23 for super paint 24 for cashmere No more then 25 per gallon
Pro Mar is a commercial grade paint so you’d never use it in your home, Sherwin Williams has a sale almost every month to offset their prices, majority of time you’re paying 30-40% off, just ask them when’s the next sale, you can also print out a $10 off $50 coupon and reuse it almost every purchase
Apparently all but one of these paints covered in two coats so there has to be other factors at play besides money to rank them! Ease of applying with brush, spattering and so forth would also be nice to know!
Informative test! I've been working at Sherwin Williams for a short whole now and I've been looking for a comparative video like this. I agree heavily with the pricing, as it turns DIYs away when you say the price (however Sherwin Williams runs sales like every month, which says a lot about pricing in the first place). From what I've learned so far, is that contractors mainly buy ProMar 400 Flat Sheen for specifically ceilings, and maybe this test makes me realize why they only use it for ceilings. SuperPaint happens to be one of the paints I can sell and get great reviews on. The Cashmere (which is called Opulence in Canada) seems be a very meh product. Benjamin Moore seems to have great products with good prices. Thank you for the video! Hopefully You can make a video comparing Benjamin Moore Aura and Sherwin Williams Emerald or Duration.
Contractors buy Promar 400 Flat for ceiling because it is a dead Flat. If you put a paint that has direct sheen or side sheen on a ceiling you’re going to see roller/ sprayer lapmarks and imperfections in the ceiling. Promar 400 isn’t durable and doesn’t give you as good an overall appearance higher quality paints so thats why you don’t use it on walls
Are there any professional painters that have a lot of experience using BM products who would prefer anything else given comparable cost? I'm asking this honestly not talking shit.. From Ben to Regal, satin impervo, super spec dtm, alkyd, waterbourne, urethane, all the corotech products, to me its not even a discussion. No test needed just using the product tells you what need to know. Maybe I'm just biased but I prefer Kelley Moore over SW and for sure take BM over anything. Not to mention the corporate feel of sherwin williams is also a bummer. Not saying they dont make great paint and have some great stores, they do but not better at anything that I've ever noticed.
Emerald has a higher volume solid. Not comparing apples to apples. Also you cant just use any roller cover with any product. You can buy the best paint on the market but if you don’t have the correct fabric for your roller cover you won’t get the correct coverage.
Awsome. i am glad to see this video. i was struggling to see what product will do the best job in my kitchen, but i do have a question. Which product are best for Kid resistant damage. I have 3 little ones and i am constantly cleaning the wall because of marks, juice, food etc. Is there such product that can with stand so much overload of toddles/kids creativities
Thank you from the bottom of my contractor soul!!! It's wonderful to see SOMEONE besides Consumer Reports test our paint. I went a step further into the matrix over a year ago and did some different testing. Ready? I took Behr crap interior semi-trim and A-100 (piss/watered) down paint and added PAINT grade titanium dioxide. In small test examples. For roughly 40 cents/gallon, I got these loser paints to cover better than anything on the market. Everyone could research the 2004 Dupont report on paint. Great technical reading. I am CEO of easycolorexpress.com and will be changing the way things are currently done. Peace to all.
EASY COLOR EXPRESS I don’t know what grade of Behr you used or what color you chose but Marquee covers everything in one coat even deep base colors work better than eminence which as thin as piss and splatters.
Seems to me that you are just out to make SW sound back because you work for BM. The SW employee didn't say one bad thing about your company or products. Just said he can tell which are from his company. Deflect much?
I view SW as a better company because they have a more realistic recommended film thickness and their coverages average 350-400 sq ft. Ben moore has a thinner recommended film thickness to artificially claim their product has more coverage of 450-500 sq ft per call. SMD Ben moore.
Benjamin Moore is the I did at your house 11 years ago one house with Dunn Edwards and the other with Benjamin Moore... Benjamin Moore was just Faded wood was good conditioner.... but The one that I did it with Dunn Edwards now is Super bad the paint
I'm a painting contractor it's all about splatter and for what you pay for Sherwin Williams shouldn't splatter and SW color floating in paint all the time. Not worth the extra mess.

Just purchased emerald wherein Williams too expensive! I had spanking brand new sheet rock and didn’t need heavy coverage…:I didn’t think to look a other prices. I hate painting and I do an aweful job but it’s all I can do right now

Why not add a video on when to primer and when not needed? Might include if adding 50% of the pigment to primer helps with coverage and lastly adding additives to eliminate smell like vanilla extract to paint ?
ProMar 200 is a scam. They probably try to compare it to Ultra Spec (20%ti) but the titanium content - coverage - is the same as Super Hide (15%ti) which was basically the best cheap paint at 1/3 the price of Pro Mar 200 to the retail customer. They get painters to buy it at ridiculously low prices and then when you go back to buy a gallon or 2 to touch up after your house was painted, it costs you 3x as much as the painter paid. Ben Moore doesn’t do that crap.
agreed ProMar line has turned to garbage. it's not even worth the money at my pricing. it has wasted so much of my time and money with the new formulation, it's just pure garbage. Ultra Spec 500 is the way to go, can't be beat for the price. it's my go-to over Ben as well

This is not apple's to apple's... Ben Moore has the Regal Select and Aura lines which have way better coverage and are more in line price wise with the SW products. It would be interesting to see how those line match up.

SW gives contractors a good price on the 200. Superpaint is always more money for contractors, and it doesn't cover in 1 coat, so the extra cost isn't worth it. Superpaint will cover in 2 coats on bare drywall, but 200 won't. And Superpaint will cover accent colors in 2 coats, while 200 is doubtful to do so. 200 ensures that contractors will tylpically use 2 coats, while Superpaint is sometimes adequately covered in 1. I don't like the finish quality of the finish of promar, because it flashes too much in natural light from an acute angles. Across the board, BM products cover significantly better. Aura will go straight onto trim and cover in 2. SW Emerald needs a primer and at least one time, I wasn't satisifed with the coverage after 3 topcoats. That's 80 dollar or so paint.

Thank you for the comparison. Very helpful. 3 years ago we had our whole house, well minus a few rooms painted in BM Regal Matte...Painter's suggestion...it's awful. It chipped, there are marks that will not come off and the slightest nick and the paint peels. We had one powder room pained in Behr paint and it is holding up better than the BM Regal. I think some of this is painter preference..BM vs SW and it's also based on who will give them the better pricing. We are going to paint our house again and we are torn between SW Superpaint or BM Ben. In the video it's hard to tell which is better as there are no kids, pets, friends or grease hitting the walls. As I said, we currently have BM Regal Matte almost everywhere and I hate it. Definitely not durable.
Hi, If you want a matte/eggshell finish go with Benjamin Moore scuff x in the matte finish,it’s actually almost an eggshell finish.Very durable will hold much better then Ben or superpaint. You can get it from most Benjamin Moore retailers.Its about 45 a gallon here in Chicago,so not much more then Ben or superpaint.
Duh because you have a matte finish. Thats basically same thing as flat paint which is impossible to get anything off of without ruining the finish even more. Eggshell or semigloss you can clean. Flat/matte paint is not cleanable...
“TheStoli5” Sorry to bust your bubble, but chipping isn’t a paint quality issue, it’s a primer issue. BM Regal IS pretty much “the shit” when it comes to wall paint. Your painter may have done a fast/light coat instead of two good coats, and also the paint may not have even had enough time to fully cure, etc. The bottom line, if you want to reasonable and decent money on a high quality paint, Regal is IT. There are so many different variables that most likely are the culprit for your dissatisfaction, not the topcoat itself.
Also, you don’t really get a deal on Benjamin Moore paint, even as a contractor. They don’t do discounts, they don’t do bulk discounts or quarterly sales, and they definitely don’t really do volume discounts on their good paint. You just buy it because it’s great paint.
Yeah cheaper products might have better “hide” not coverage, but what about washability and durability? Súper paint has some cleaning properties and it is durable. Now promar 400 is one of the cheapest paint from Sw and I can say that it’s like water. We don’t sell contractors grade products to homeowners unless they have a professional account. Employee.

Great test, but a little long. Could have 30 seconds worth of sum up at the end with your results in bullet form. That way we don't have to listen to your long winded explanation again trying to find what you said were the top performers for coverage and pricing.
Would have been nice to have this in actual high-def video. The hi-def selection is below the video, but it doesn't go above 480p in quality. Also, the top True Value paints work better than any of these.
That's NOT fair to list the "Retail" price of ProMar200 against Super Paint ... Promar is strictly contractor only! It has a list price but not a retail. It's not warrantied and we Don't sell it to homeowners at all

Comparing retail prices for contractor products does nothing. DIY consumers should not be buying PM 200 (designed for and only marketed toward contractors) over the DIY lines (designed for and marketed to everyone) Also SW will have 30-40% off 90% of the time so really, is BM cheaper? You. Have to look at value for money (solids levels, mildewcides, etc) not just price. SW provides a higher quality paint for around the same price typically.
SW consistently compares products that are not on a level playing ground or price point as BM. Price is the only thing that you can use as a gauge. Do you have a better way?? If I need a $55/gal paint from SW to get similar coverage as a $38/gal paint from BM, where is the value??
Eric Owen Not always, sometimes just using the correct roller cover is all it takes. Different fabrics hold and release the paint differently from one product to another. Also most companies only show solids on their data sheet but not VOLUME solids. Volume solids make a huge difference in product coverage as well. Also depends on what color that is being coated. Dark to light or light to dark, yes most will need a second coat but some products needs such little paint for the last coat it takes no effort.

Walk not any Sherwin Williams paint store bathroom and look at the dirt and grease collection with any of their products. Their walls are specter emerald. Spray some water on their walls and watch the discoloration. Superpaint in so fla is in the low twenties
Super Paint at $56/gallon ? Wow, I pay much less per gallon, around the ~$40 mark. I know ProMar is my "go to" paint for new construction jobs. Cashmere is a purpose specific paint and the moron who thinks it's "meh" obviously doesn't know anything about painting or what or how different paints are used.
CAshmere is a self priming 2 coat system that goes on really nicely. Some say "like Butta". It has a superior finished appearance compaired to it's equal level paints from it's competitors.

Which we use instead, as well as our premium interior products are 100% acrylic. So you get what you pay for...and you don't get what you won't pay for. When 80-90% of a job is labor. Why would you chance it?

doc hall you will get what you pay for. Superpaint is a much better product than Promar 200. But it is still a vinyl acrylic. SW is trying to compete with Home Depot which is why they will sell it cheaper and cheaper. But do you think they will improve the product, even though they have to reduce their selling price???

I have always preferred the Benjamin Moore Regal and coloring through tint system. I agree. Too bad most of their stores no longer exist and it's hard to find.
Excellent review. Thanks for taking the time to do this test. Professional painter here in Pennsylvania. I use paints from both stores weekly depending what Im doing. I do use Ultra Spec a lot on rentals & get it for a good contractor price. For a few dollars more Superpaint is well worth it & covers better. It also comes down to if your doing cover over jobs or diverse color changes. Regal select is an excellent paint in many ways but is def. thicker and a lil tougher to apply than SW Duration. That paint goes on the easiest of any paint Ive ever used. Ultra Spec doesnt cover the best if the walls are beat up or your color change is a lil different. ben & superpaint are about the same in my experience w ben being a lil easier to apply. You def. get what you pay for with these paints. I try to give my customers the best when I can also. As a painter, they make the job easier and yourself a much better painter. Lastly Ive used big box paints (behr/valspar/ppg) through the years and in gen., none of them are as good as these two companies. Just my two cents and years of painting experience.
I really like what you had you say I'm a foreman at a company here in Sacramento California and we use super paint on most of our jobs for exterior and interior I do know that Benjamin Moore on their super premium high-end has been tested to have the highest solid content out of all of them except it's hard to find a dealer here the only places that carry Benjamin Moore are at like Ace Hardware and trying to do with that is pretty much impossible and two it's hard to justify paying $350 for a 5 gallon of Benjamin Moore paint
As a pro-painter I use SW promar200. Prices vary by sheen and product. I use Benjamin Moore advance for cabinets, molding and trim but pay full price for a gallon and that cost is in the $60.00 range so I always add the cost of that in my cabinet paint bids. Here in CO/SPR Benjamin Moore is not in a user friendly location and discounts are not given like SW. Great Tutorial and keep up the good work...

Prices for promar is at contractor price at level for dyi. I’m a manager at a SW, and you wouldn’t pay 66 or 58 for promar. You would most likely pay between level a pricing and c which can be between 21-35.
Sekekama WoW this is one thing that drives me crazy about SW. Their pricing is ridiculous. I did not creat it, but I can’t quote random numbers bc it all depends on volume. I did the same thing with BMs pricing...quoting retail. A gallon of BM Ultra Spec will not be at full retail either, but it will be far closer than what a gal of SW 200 would be bc SW hyper-inflates their retail prices. So annoying!

This is a good video, but when it comes to price comparison it would be nice to know the chemistry behind the paints - are the more expensive paints using binders that provide for a longer life and better surface wear characteristics, etc?
Next time I would suggest labeling the paint lines using A, B, C..., rather than 1, 2, 3..., as to not confuse the number labels with the paint ranking you gave each one. Too many numbers. However, I do appreciate the video and everything you shared with us. Thanks so much!
This comparison really helps me, personally. We don’t use the cheapest paints but we also don’t use the most premium on our rentals, but the price point difference is amazing, especially since we always do 2-coats regardless. Finally have a BM store opening near us which we’re looking forward to trying out and comparing to our SW use.

Ok coverage and price point is important.
But dark colours and light colours will cover different. How about a base1 paint and a base 2/3 paint and see if they are consistent?
Now the next most important thing is how do they level (leave streaks/ go back and touch up a roller line 10 minutes later and see if it leaves a different texture? With Behr paint you can not do a roller touch up after 2 minutes and leaves roller lines the easiest if you apply uneven pressure to your roller stroke.
The most important feature is how does it cut with a brush. Ex. BEN goes on like butter spreads smooth and easy. Behr any indoor paint of theirs goes on like glue. You can instantly feel the paint pulling against your brush as you do a second stroke. I don't have experience with Sherman Williams.
Also some of these paints (are 2 in one) have primer within them others don't. And that adds to the price differences.

Right on Nick. I know you’re a Benny Moore guy. That’s how you know somebody who loves the trade and is not biased we all prefer our companies and we need to quit having the argument over who’s better. Because if you’re a good painter you really can make anything work. I love Sherwin products I do a lot of exteriors. In my eyes though Benjamin Moore is the only close products to Sherwin.

Can you also compare; 1) Do any eggshell or semi-gloss products hide plaster repairs in 2 coats without being spot primed with the paint first? 2) Did you guys make the video about touch ups? Roller touch-ups, brush touch-ups? 3) Which white trim paint covers best when painting simply white over a creamy white? 4) Which paint can handle being washed a bit? Did I miss anything?

He was comparing the two companies and their lower grade products. Of course contractor price points will change pricing, of course the products aren't contaminated, of course the same roller covers were used for all roll-outs.

Now I want everyone to realize that the Promar paints are considered contractor paints. They should not be used by DIY customers and is probably one of the reasons it's priced that way. Superpaint is one on the premium paints. Also remember that Sherwin-Williams paint is almost always on sale at at least 30% off and 40% off at least 4 times a year. Also Sherwin-Williams offers Paint Perks that gives Paint Perks customers 10% off even when there isn't a sale.
I get pro-mar 200 for 14$ it has no body to it. I switched to the Super Paint get it for 25$ it has a paint & primer in it. Great Test! I knew the 400 was gonna be last lol

Nice comparison. I used both of them and I usually use either BM hide primer and BM premium grade paint, or 2 coats of the Super Paint from SW. The worse experience was Dulux contractor grade primer and paint, I painted the house 5 times to get it covered. Called their rep to look and they took a wall sample and they said they can get it cover in just 1 coat primer and 1 coat paint! They came and watched me paint the 3rd coat on the the wall here and his eye browse was in his forehead, he couldn't believe it. He tried it himself with their own Dulux 11mm microfiber and still couldn't do it. Well he just gave me just enough to finish the house 4 coats of paint!! Lost money on that job especially in labour. I also tried their Dulux Diamond line premium and was not as good as the SW permium. Not as durable, still needs 2 coats of Dulux and 1 nice thick coat with the SW.

Ultra Spec 500 is by far the best bang for the buck today. Sherwin Williams has gutted the hide performance of ProMar200 and ProMar400. And increased the prices by 40%.
super paint takes the win that's all we use at the company that I work for...i'm a foreman there... we use super paint for interior and exterior most of the time..if we're trying to price competitively will use promar 200 for our interior...which most of the time covers in two coats but other than that will use super paint like 90% of the time along with Emerald urathane trim...for paint contractors I think Sherwin-Williams has good customer service and the store managers always take care of us...love the demonstration AND before covid we used to get super paint at like I don't know $26 a gallon maybe 27 and now I think it's like 32 so for a five it's like 140 a 5gal.. my boss(the owner probably spends 50-70k a year there.. we aren't that big compared to other companies, but I feel like the bigger the company, the worse the quality

This was great for me. A single woman painting her house. The key for me was SW has primer in it.
Ive done my research and many pros say not to use just the paint with primers in them. Those paints with primer in them do nothing. You always want to use a primer like Zinsser 123 or Kilz primer before painting because it will save you money in the long run. Using a good quality primer is also cheaper than paint to and you wont have to use as many coats of paint and if you have bought paint before its alot higher cost than primer. Your overall results will turn out better as well by using a primer and paint.
The paint does not have any gender bias. Women can paint as well as anyone else can. I remember helping my single mom paint when I was eight years old (she was a nurse full time and in grad school). The paint/primer in one is a marketing gimmick. As the Ghetto man notes, you will get far better results always using a real primer first (I like BM Fresh Start) high hide.
Two coats all the time! It’s not about coverage when comes to lasting and scuff longevity quality paint. Better does better and lasts better. I’ll pay more

@Mike Bell I have PPG locally... Speedhide interior is the worst product I have ever used. All 3 times so not a bad batch. It does clean well so I wouldn't say it is a *super* cheap product (cough promar destroys my brushes/rollers) but it certainly doesn't cover well at all.
But I will try the one you mentioned and see how it do. I know my friends who spray cars love PPG so...
@Mike Bell yup I like the Ben line a lot. Not amazed by regal. Actually prefer Behr. Most customers/painters find it "taboo" but it is my favorite on application. Used a lot of Pro mar on commercial jobs. It is... Meh. Gets the job done. I DO like break through actually. If thats their waterborne alkyd I used it on some cabs myself with good results

@walls by design: Great attempt to provide customers, perspective. I do have a few issues with this type of testing:
1. You are testing hiding of the products not coverage. Coverage is a measure of sq feet of surface covered per gallon at a certain film thickness
2. The lighting in the room isn't consistent (shadows etc.) conclusively make recommendations
3. As I understand you are testing eggshells that are tinted to be grey. For a comparison, all greys would have to be identical, since even a slight change in darkness can improve the hiding
4. The price points of the products also include other performance benefits (burnish, dry time, appearance, feel etc.) not just hiding. All paint products are not created equal. Factoring those attributes may lead to the same contractor choosing a different product.

Walls by Design not sure how you can state Ben Moore’s retail when all Ben Moore’s are franchises. The owner of the store sets the price resulting in huge inconsistencies across North America. I have 3 Ben Moore’s in my city and they all have different retail prices.

One way to bring the price down from all the paint stores. Is to open an account with all of them and then and then compare your prices and tell that to your rep that you get in the a better deal at the competition.

Pro Mar is a commercial grade paint so you’d never use it in your home, Sherwin Williams has a sale almost every month to offset their prices, majority of time you’re paying 30-40% off, just ask them when’s the next sale, you can also print out a $10 off $50 coupon and reuse it almost every purchase
Xanzibar we use UltraSpec in most homes. We offer a lifetime warranty on it and have never had a warranty claim against it. Just sayin.
Try Benjamin Moore Coronado Grand and Coronado Tough Wall paints when you get a chance. Much less than SW Super Paint and has great coverage.

Informative test! I've been working at Sherwin Williams for a short whole now and I've been looking for a comparative video like this. I agree heavily with the pricing, as it turns DIYs away when you say the price (however Sherwin Williams runs sales like every month, which says a lot about pricing in the first place). From what I've learned so far, is that contractors mainly buy ProMar 400 Flat Sheen for specifically ceilings, and maybe this test makes me realize why they only use it for ceilings. SuperPaint happens to be one of the paints I can sell and get great reviews on. The Cashmere (which is called Opulence in Canada) seems be a very meh product. Benjamin Moore seems to have great products with good prices. Thank you for the video! Hopefully You can make a video comparing Benjamin Moore Aura and Sherwin Williams Emerald or Duration.
Contractors buy Promar 400 Flat for ceiling because it is a dead Flat. If you put a paint that has direct sheen or side sheen on a ceiling you’re going to see roller/ sprayer lapmarks and imperfections in the ceiling. Promar 400 isn’t durable and doesn’t give you as good an overall appearance higher quality paints so thats why you don’t use it on walls

Are there any professional painters that have a lot of experience using BM products who would prefer anything else given comparable cost? I'm asking this honestly not talking shit.. From Ben to Regal, satin impervo, super spec dtm, alkyd, waterbourne, urethane, all the corotech products, to me its not even a discussion. No test needed just using the product tells you what need to know. Maybe I'm just biased but I prefer Kelley Moore over SW and for sure take BM over anything. Not to mention the corporate feel of sherwin williams is also a bummer. Not saying they dont make great paint and have some great stores, they do but not better at anything that I've ever noticed.

Emerald has a higher volume solid. Not comparing apples to apples. Also you cant just use any roller cover with any product. You can buy the best paint on the market but if you don’t have the correct fabric for your roller cover you won’t get the correct coverage.
I did SW Emerald and the paint is wonderful, excellent coverage and the walls look amazing..
Coverage is the square footage of paint you get per gallon (volume solids and resin quality play a huge part in this). Hide is how well paint hides.
Awsome. i am glad to see this video. i was struggling to see what product will do the best job in my kitchen, but i do have a question. Which product are best for Kid resistant damage. I have 3 little ones and i am constantly cleaning the wall because of marks, juice, food etc. Is there such product that can with stand so much overload of toddles/kids creativities

I went a step further into the matrix over a year ago and did some different testing. Ready? I took Behr crap interior semi-trim and A-100 (piss/watered) down paint and added PAINT grade titanium dioxide. In small test examples. For roughly 40 cents/gallon, I got these loser paints to cover better than anything on the market. Everyone could research the 2004 Dupont report on paint. Great technical reading. I am CEO of easycolorexpress.com and will be changing the way things are currently done. Peace to all.
EASY COLOR EXPRESS I don’t know what grade of Behr you used or what color you chose but Marquee covers everything in one coat even deep base colors work better than eminence which as thin as piss and splatters.

PPG paint is far better and cheaper. That's a fact
lifes good way better value, they just don’t invest as much in marketing like the other brands do
I view SW as a better company because they have a more realistic recommended film thickness and their coverages average 350-400 sq ft. Ben moore has a thinner recommended film thickness to artificially claim their product has more coverage of 450-500 sq ft per call. SMD Ben moore.

Benjamin Moore is the I did at your house 11 years ago one house with Dunn Edwards and the other with Benjamin Moore... Benjamin Moore was just Faded wood was good conditioner.... but The one that I did it with Dunn Edwards now is Super bad the paint
I'm a painting contractor it's all about splatter and for what you pay for Sherwin Williams shouldn't splatter and SW color floating in paint all the time. Not worth the extra mess.

Just purchased emerald wherein Williams too expensive! I had spanking brand new sheet rock and didn’t need heavy coverage…:I didn’t think to look a other prices. I hate painting and I do an aweful job but it’s all I can do right now

Why not add a video on when to primer and when not needed? Might include if adding 50% of the pigment to primer helps with coverage and lastly adding additives to eliminate smell like vanilla extract to paint ?
ProMar 200 is a scam. They probably try to compare it to Ultra Spec (20%ti) but the titanium content - coverage - is the same as Super Hide (15%ti) which was basically the best cheap paint at 1/3 the price of Pro Mar 200 to the retail customer. They get painters to buy it at ridiculously low prices and then when you go back to buy a gallon or 2 to touch up after your house was painted, it costs you 3x as much as the painter paid. Ben Moore doesn’t do that crap.
agreed ProMar line has turned to garbage. it's not even worth the money at my pricing. it has wasted so much of my time and money with the new formulation, it's just pure garbage. Ultra Spec 500 is the way to go, can't be beat for the price. it's my go-to over Ben as well

At close to 40 per gallon retail, Ben is best at one coat. Possibly Ultra spec best value at two coats. IMO
$34 here in Harper Ferry, WV. Can't beat it.
if you're doing 2 coats though, then even ProMar 400 will be sufficient, which at $17/gal for flat is the way to go. again, if you're doing 2coast
This is not apple's to apple's... Ben Moore has the Regal Select and Aura lines which have way better coverage and are more in line price wise with the SW products. It would be interesting to see how those line match up.
We tried to stick in the lower end of the range on both companies. Maybe we do another one in the future with the more expensive ones.

SW gives contractors a good price on the 200. Superpaint is always more money for contractors, and it doesn't cover in 1 coat, so the extra cost isn't worth it. Superpaint will cover in 2 coats on bare drywall, but 200 won't. And Superpaint will cover accent colors in 2 coats, while 200 is doubtful to do so. 200 ensures that contractors will tylpically use 2 coats, while Superpaint is sometimes adequately covered in 1. I don't like the finish quality of the finish of promar, because it flashes too much in natural light from an acute angles. Across the board, BM products cover significantly better. Aura will go straight onto trim and cover in 2. SW Emerald needs a primer and at least one time, I wasn't satisifed with the coverage after 3 topcoats. That's 80 dollar or so paint.

Thank you for the comparison. Very helpful. 3 years ago we had our whole house, well minus a few rooms painted in BM Regal Matte...Painter's suggestion...it's awful. It chipped, there are marks that will not come off and the slightest nick and the paint peels. We had one powder room pained in Behr paint and it is holding up better than the BM Regal. I think some of this is painter preference..BM vs SW and it's also based on who will give them the better pricing. We are going to paint our house again and we are torn between SW Superpaint or BM Ben. In the video it's hard to tell which is better as there are no kids, pets, friends or grease hitting the walls. As I said, we currently have BM Regal Matte almost everywhere and I hate it. Definitely not durable.

If you want a matte/eggshell finish go with Benjamin Moore scuff x in the matte finish,it’s actually almost an eggshell finish.Very durable will hold much better then Ben or superpaint.
You can get it from most Benjamin Moore retailers.Its about 45 a gallon here in Chicago,so not much more then Ben or superpaint.
Duh because you have a matte finish. Thats basically same thing as flat paint which is impossible to get anything off of without ruining the finish even more. Eggshell or semigloss you can clean. Flat/matte paint is not cleanable...
“TheStoli5” Sorry to bust your bubble, but chipping isn’t a paint quality issue, it’s a primer issue. BM Regal IS pretty much “the shit” when it comes to wall paint. Your painter may have done a fast/light coat instead of two good coats, and also the paint may not have even had enough time to fully cure, etc. The bottom line, if you want to reasonable and decent money on a high quality paint, Regal is IT. There are so many different variables that most likely are the culprit for your dissatisfaction, not the topcoat itself.
Also, you don’t really get a deal on Benjamin Moore paint, even as a contractor. They don’t do discounts, they don’t do bulk discounts or quarterly sales, and they definitely don’t really do volume discounts on their good paint. You just buy it because it’s great paint.
What paints are the ones that stick to objects that lean against it for a while? I have that and it sucks.

Yeah cheaper products might have better “hide” not coverage, but what about washability and durability? Súper paint has some cleaning properties and it is durable. Now promar 400 is one of the cheapest paint from Sw and I can say that it’s like water. We don’t sell contractors grade products to homeowners unless they have a professional account. Employee.

JBIRD575 super paint but it’s cheapest retail at 56 a gallon
cashmere/superpaint. Constant 30 and 40 percent off sales throughout the year.
Great test, but a little long. Could have 30 seconds worth of sum up at the end with your results in bullet form. That way we don't have to listen to your long winded explanation again trying to find what you said were the top performers for coverage and pricing.
Walls vs. Cabinets - BM vs SW?
Would have been nice to have this in actual high-def video. The hi-def selection is below the video, but it doesn't go above 480p in quality.
Also, the top True Value paints work better than any of these.

That's NOT fair to list the "Retail" price of ProMar200 against Super Paint ... Promar is strictly contractor only! It has a list price but not a retail. It's not warrantied and we Don't sell it to homeowners at all

Walls by Design .. well NO contractor has ever or would ever pay 66.00 a gallon. Even at the lowest level pricing schedule they're paying low 30s

The products used to compete against each other aren’t correct crossover. “Ben” should be compared to Pro Mar 200 not Cashmere, for example.
Steph, the problem is the stores don't compare apple to apples all the time. I tried to make it about Suggested Retail price, which I know is ridiculous too. SW plays all sorts of games with this.

Never use the Promar 200 or 400 You have to do 3 coats is water... When I work for somebody else saying and buy the paint pro mar 200 my face like fuck now I have to do three coats

You gotta remember that super paint is paint and primer in one, on the other hand, the Promar series are just paint.

Comparing retail prices for contractor products does nothing. DIY consumers should not be buying PM 200 (designed for and only marketed toward contractors) over the DIY lines (designed for and marketed to everyone) Also SW will have 30-40% off 90% of the time so really, is BM cheaper? You. Have to look at value for money (solids levels, mildewcides, etc) not just price. SW provides a higher quality paint for around the same price typically.
SW consistently compares products that are not on a level playing ground or price point as BM. Price is the only thing that you can use as a gauge. Do you have a better way?? If I need a $55/gal paint from SW to get similar coverage as a $38/gal paint from BM, where is the value??

Eric Owen Not always, sometimes just using the correct roller cover is all it takes. Different fabrics hold and release the paint differently from one product to another. Also most companies only show solids on their data sheet but not VOLUME solids. Volume solids make a huge difference in product coverage as well. Also depends on what color that is being coated. Dark to light or light to dark, yes most will need a second coat but some products needs such little paint for the last coat it takes no effort.

You’re supposed to paint like a lawnmower and re-dip every 3 feet. So each dip was supposed to be a new row. Not 2 dips for each square.

I've always used SW super paint and have never paid that much.
Walk not any Sherwin Williams paint store bathroom and look at the dirt and grease collection with any of their products. Their walls are specter emerald. Spray some water on their walls and watch the discoloration. Superpaint in so fla is in the low twenties

PPG is waaaay better paint and company by far, plus it is much cheaper.
Promar 400 is a ceiling paint, which wont perform that well on walls
ProMar400 is a wall paint, not designed for walls, ProMar has its own ceiling paint

Super Paint at $56/gallon ? Wow, I pay much less per gallon, around the ~$40 mark. I know ProMar is my "go to" paint for new construction jobs. Cashmere is a purpose specific paint and the moron who thinks it's "meh" obviously doesn't know anything about painting or what or how different paints are used.
krisone63 everyone gets a different price. Marketing tactics at SW. All contractors get different pricing.

CAshmere is a self priming 2 coat system that goes on really nicely. Some say "like Butta". It has a superior finished appearance compaired to it's equal level paints from it's competitors.
