I am still waiting for Jibo to become active again. It has personality that Alexa and Google Assistant lack. Users should not expect devices which provide ongoing functions to be funded entirely by the purchase price. A monthly service charge would have allowed Jibo to survive. Perhaps it was unrealistic profit motive that was the real problem for the investors. In the future use crowdfunding were there is no expectation for profit, only for a new product to come into existence.
Why not? Why pay for a half done product and then have to pay every month an extra to use the product? This isn't like a car where you pay gas, but more like a fridge that you use continously
@ , operating the data center required to provide continuous support for queries has a cost. Paying a minimum monthly charge to provide that support is reasonable and logically required. It would make no sense to include that cost included in the initial product cost. BTW: you pay a monthly charge to operate your refrigerator. As for half done product, the initial version had a great deal of function. I can tell you have never designed, built and coded a computer system. The cost was way too low for the function provided.
01:19 Jibo's promising start led to unfulfilled orders and increased frustration. 02:32 Jibo faced challenges due to high pricing and proprietary technology choices. 04:05 Jibo failed due to technology not being ready for social companion 05:31 Start small, move fast to develop MVP 06:44 Budget allocation and managing expectations are crucial for startups. 08:02 Startups should plan development based on proven technology and deliver achievable outcomes for sustained success.
Like 70% of the history, 30% not mentioned. I don't think Jibo need it ROS, ir just does not make any sense Ina. Robot t that does not move like Jibo. You can do it better "from scratch" but you have to do it properly 🤷
The problems with products like these is that there is no use case that is already available in other devices like a cellphone. Everything besides the useless wiggle of the device is already available in a device people use everyday. So of course it is a failure.
I think like every robotics company has at some point made their robots dance, not inherently good or bad just a fun way to show off the range of motion
Just subscribed from your mailing list and this is the very first content received. Both informative and entertaining video, keep it up!
Excellent summary of lessons learned.
Great summary. However, there is no reason to use ROS for Jibo.
Good video, a must needed series. It would be great if you could do the same for "Anki Robotics"
It is on the list! I also bought it and ended with a useless robot...

We could provide some information about a similar story of the black and white animal haptic robot from Bayern

Yeah, I got same same view on this. ROS Is for some usecases, I dont think, that this was the case.
yup, was wondering why he mentioned ROS would be better. I do think they are better off just doing from scratch.

Anytime a company shows you their robot "dancing" this is a red flag.

This review is too wishy washy
