The high five at the end with Copper was everything. I'm so glad their test came out well. I vote for the Obsidian sweater because in obsessed with it- but, of course, follow your bliss. Happy holidays 🎄! Happy knitting 💚🧶🩷
Greetings from Simcoe, ON . First time here and I really enjoyed this episode. No clear winner for me on what to do with the brown yarn but heavily leaning towards using it with the bright yellow sunflowers. Happy Knitting! 🍁
New subscriber, I'm glad I found your channel! I'm loving your podcasts so far and I'm also waiting on something from Canada Post haha but at least it's not critical
Hello from BC Ali! Also a reader and a knitter . I feel you on the CP strike Ugh !! I'm excited to see what color work you settle on as i am also tackling my first one this year !!
I would knit the Maryanna sweater with your Vancouver yarn and use a cool tone hot pink/fuchsia for the contrast colour, it would look so nice! I feel your postal pain (yes I support them too), I have a knit gauge thingamajig somewhere out there in the ether. It may never be delivered, but it was only $3. The strike has saved me a lot of money!
Really enjoying your podcast. Good luck on your sweater progress for your sister's Christmas gift. For your color work sweater, if you are brand new to stranded color work, you may want to consider knitting a cowl or hat first before the sweater just to get your technique down. One of the more challenging aspects of color work is getting the single stitches whether in the contrast color or the main color to look right. And it can take more than a swatch to get your own technique down, so practicing on a smaller project first is one option. Just a thought. Cheers! 🎉
Tip I gift my knits with a laundry bag that zips up so they can wash it in that and then lay to dry or dry on low in the bag…. So far this has really helped and they are often thankful for this part
Lots of exciting plans for winter knitting! I have a suggestion about the Claudia Quintanilla pattern book -- check if your local library has a copy. If they don't, ask if they can do an interlibrary loan for you (where they borrow it from a library outside their network). You can also suggest the book for purchase at your local library and they might buy it for their collection and you can borrow it 😊
Ohh that’s a great idea! It looks like mine doesn’t have it but I will request it and see what happens-maybe that’ll shape the outcome of the winter knitting plans 😂
Oh I think you'll have so much fun doing stranded colourwork! You might be able to skew your brown/grey warmer or cooler depending on your contrast colour. A pop of something really bold would be fun. I like the look of the Maryanna, and you could continue the 'dirt' speckles a bit further if you wanted.
I vote for the second to last pattern. I think you should have enough yarn for it and I think we electric blue or hot pink would look nice. Super interesting video. Thanks!
Loved your video and can’t wait to see what you pick for your colorwork sweater! Would you consider a color changing yarn like spincycle or zauberball?
I wonder if you look up the Wervel Sweater in ravelry you might get ideas for color combos mixing the vibrant colors with the grey brown. It seems like a dark border like a black or navy against the brown and then the neon in between might help if you don’t like colors against the warmer brown?
I think the forestland is striking and you could mash up a different neckline, but I’m wondering if you love it because it’s so graphic? It doesn’t have the romance or whimsy of some of your other choices.

It's interesting how colour preference and perception works: I don't normally like Joji's style and designs, nor warm colors, but the Instant Crush crushed me instantly in her colour scheme 😂 And if I had seen Aimee's version first, I wouldn't have given it a second glance. This goes to show that the colour of the sample does have a lot of influence on how people perceive the designs, as you mentioned. Maybe that's why so many designers go to beige, which IMHO is a sad color, but it's been trending for a good while and many people love it as a neutral. But it kills the potential of many designs. I remember I didn't like the Storm Sweater by Petite Knit - until I saw High Fiber Knits' bright orange version. That design looks so much better in bright colours! Unlike the Ingrid Sweater/ Vest, which does look good in the dark neutrals of the sample, even if both are knit purl textures. Also, the Sweater No. 16 by My Favourite Things Knitwear didn't call my attention until I saw a version in a solid colour (pink) and didn't even recognize the design; the Levitate Wrap looks better in the less exposed navy sample; and the Ranunculus, in the fitted versions in a bit thicker, summery yarns that some people made (the version that opened my eyes for this possibility was the one by Bethany from Well Loved Knits). Anyways, that's why it's always nice to look up other knitters' projects if we can
Right?! It has me thinking that if I ever design a pattern, I need two very different samples and to try to get a good photo for the cover that allows you to see both at least in part 😂
The yarn you have is so pretty I would definitely pick a plainish color to let the yarn you have shine! Personally I’d consider changing the pattern you’re using or changing the chart bc 3 color colorwork takes so much longer but you definitely can do it! I would do the grey brown with a cream or caramel but I’m also a big earth tones girly
What about Tin Can Knits ebook (on Ravelry) which shows you a yoked pattern and how to design/calculate YOUR OWN COLORWORK DESIGN ? Then you could draw on all the parts of the various designs you like and make it your own.
I love that idea! They’re not currently an option with the POD service that made the most sense in every other way, but I really hope they’ll add some drawstring canvas bags to the options soon!
Oof. Hard one. Just looking at that yarn, I would honestly only pair it with cream or do a textured non-colorwork sweater myself. The patterns that are springing to mind seem like less of your vibe. I recently bought quite a similar yarn at a local place (the sort of yarn where they tell you the individual sheep's names on the tag). It has that same ambiguous kind of warm but not really color that I think is just characteristic of certain breeds. I'm planning to use it for Anna Sjösvärd's new Asynja Cardigan pattern. Her Huldra is a nice colorwork one full of lice. Other things that spring to mind are Scotch Pine by Alicia Plummer or, surprise surprise, a lot of the petite knitter's oeuvre. Her rust orange color would be nice. There are botanical yoke sweaters that are twigs or holly branches or other more wintery things. Raven’s Wood by Catherine Waterfield, Terho by Susanna Winter, Fox Den by Anna Johanna, etc. The Ohdake sweater by Novita is nice. For a less abrupt transition, you could look at something like Ananta Cardigan by Zanete Knits or Wildwood Sweater by Heidi May. Have you looked at non-yoke colorwork? Hintermost by Bristol Ivy, Westwood Sweater by Iris H, Berry Bushes by Anna Johanna, etc. I think the key will be finding warm-toned colors to go with it: A very creamy cream, rust, etc. Obviously, it's your sweater, and you should do something you'll like, but I think a yarn dyed a very artificial color that is super even will never mesh well with it no matter what color you choose. One of those Brooklyn Tweed looks where they dye a color over a darker base might work. A light dye over a multicolored dark natural base might be great. Joji is Argentinian; her first name (nickname?) is pronounced as in Spanish.
My own knitting plans are a big red chenille sweater out of some chenille I inherited, and a green cardigan with red berries that should be basically done, but the sleeves don't fit. Aaaah! (We'll see how it behaves after re-blocking.) I was going to do an all-over colorwork sweater for Christmas, but it's going to have to be for after. It's Skeindeer knits' festive yoke pullover... but with the fornicating deer chart featured prominently.
Take a look at the strange brew ebook - it has instructions for circular yoke sweaters with fingering, dk and worsted weight yarns. They have a bunch of example colorwork patterns that you could use. I am sure you will be able to come up with your own patterns to get to exactly what you want. You didn't sound like any of the patterns you talked about was ideal to you, and this might be your path
@@AliMakesEverything If it helps to have more context, Joji is from Argentina (and thus a Spanish speaker). The J sound in Spanish is like the H sound in English.
I encourage you to do a small color-work project - (hat or cowl) before tackling the sweater. I’ve just done my first - and using more than 2 colors (base + 1) was not a good idea. I love the Marianna - and if you used an ombré skein you could achieve the look of multiple colors. Def do a swatch if the black and your base - you want to be sure you can see your hard work. Cottongrass is also amazing!
The high five at the end with Copper was everything. I'm so glad their test came out well. I vote for the Obsidian sweater because in obsessed with it- but, of course, follow your bliss. Happy holidays 🎄! Happy knitting 💚🧶🩷
I vote for the three color colorwork and using a cream with a poppy red or pumpkin orange for a pop of color!
Ooh I do love a poppy red😍
The Pairing: it’s not you.

I just died of cuteness overload 🤗your pup is so cute and talented
Hahahha thank you! We love doing tricks together 😄

for the colourwork I think cream, fuchsia, and chartreuse would be a great combo
😍 This is such a fun combo idea!

Blues look really lovely with brown

Ok, I've done the packing tape as lamination trick for a pattern since seeing it on your channel. Life-saver!
I found the double knit button band to be much faster than a ribbed one! You can do it 😂
I love the mug! I recognized it as Studio 648 right away. Alecia makes beautiful stuff!
Great eye! 😍

elecric green and black would look great with that yarn at the same time
My vote is for the cottongrass sweater. I think it'll do the yarn the most justice.
I agree

I think you’re totally right! I like the idea of continuing those specks further down!
I think on the colorwork a bright turquoise might be better then the mustard and work well with the yarn you already have
I vote for the second to last pattern. I think you should have enough yarn for it and I think we electric blue or hot pink would look nice. Super interesting video. Thanks!
Oh also knits by Lillian is working on a cool vine style colorwork yoke pattern if you can wait I think that one would be so cool!
Hello from the Chicago 'burbs! Check your Ravelry messages. I think I found the yarn you were after. Good luck!
I would check with Les Garcon in Montreal. I know that they have La Bien Amiee, but I think they might have colours you would like in their own brand.
Loved your video and can’t wait to see what you pick for your colorwork sweater! Would you consider a color changing yarn like spincycle or zauberball?
Ooh that’s a fun idea I hadn’t thought of, I’ve never used one of those before!

Have you looked at Frankie Grey Fibers? The is an awesome yarn dyer in Edmonton.
I think Jennifer steingass gold fern would look fab in your spesh yarn xx
Ooooh that’s such a pretty pattern!

I’ve heard those little dots called lice. Is that worse than fleas? I don’t know. Either way, I wish we called them dots or snow showers or glitter!
Oh I think you’re right, I think that’s the word I was thinking of 😂 Equally gross 😂
Dont know how this works with your typical color scheme, but that brown gray looks like it might go well with jewel tones?
Ooh I think you’re right, it would!
Joji is pronounced Ho-he.
Oh thank you! I tried to look up pronunciation but found different answers and wasn’t sure which to go with so great to know for next time 😊
@ No problem.

Swatching with black to test is definitely a good thought! 😄
@ and take pic - then look at image in black and white. That will show how much contrast better than naked eye. Swatches are your friend 😉
