A nice and fair review. I'm not sure what people expected from Romero but I think he did a great job. I'd just like to mention that the MIDI tracks in the free version of Sigil are composed by Jimmy (James Paddock). He's a pretty talented guy. :)
A lot of the problems with this WAD is the fanboyism pisses people off. Romero is a has been digging into his teenage years to try and appear relevant. A lot of people like Doom, but can't stand the man Romero is now and seeing everyone suck his dick because he released a Doom WAD has pissed them off a lot. Would Sigil be even remotely cared about if it wasn't for fanboys drooling over the author's name? Probably not. And there in lies the problem. People can't divorce the WAD from the creator and the creator from their fanboyism.
Finally a review that doesn't relentlessly hate on Sigil, as this represents the good time i had with it much better. I fell for the nice design as you mentioned.
If when you said "people hated this WAD" you mean to a very specific FPS critic, you might find that he isn't a good representative of the DOOM community!
Let's be honest here though. There have been much better works done by the Doom community and if this was done by someone other than Romero it would be considered an okay level pack for Doom. The best thing about this mod imo is that Hell here actually looks and feels like hell unlike the Inferno episode.
Great video! Love this channel :) I just downloaded this wad the other day. I played through the first few missions, and it's a LOAD of fun. I'm starting a twitch stream next week and this is going to be my first stream. The first fps game I played was Doom and I wanted to pay it tribute by popping my twitch cherry with it's latest episode. I'm so glad that this game is still getting new content, it's one of the best! As is Gaming Pastime!!
One tip for those reviews, if you doing the gameplay with the vanilla weapons, try to use Smooth Doom. Doesn't change anything gameplay wise (unless you enable the zombie rifle option) and smooths out the animations! And you can also use the sprites of Doom 64 with extra frames!
The footage in silgil website is a test build of project brutality 3.0 one that's different to the one in your review by the way if you want a newer build of 3.0 check there GitHub or go to there discord
Great. I think "Sigil" got such terrible reviews because 1.Some morons a haven't moved on from being buthurt about Daikatana. 2.Some JRomero fans were expecting the guy to re-invent the wheel. Sigil isn't a classic that's for sure. It's ok. And that is fine. I'll humbly suggest you to review the marathon trilogy (dev by Bungie).
I have some big problems with it, mainly they derrive with the insistance with using the doom 1 assets and the lack of supplies on UV meaning you have to shotgun some barons and a lot of cacodemons, which isnt challenging its just tedious. All in all though its still free and has a great atmosphere.
@@sernoddicusthegallant6986 I stand corrected. Yeah... It does get grindy. also in classic Romero style there are a lot of dickish moves the game keeps pulling out at you (i find some of those charming tho). I'm probably alone on this one but I'd love to see the guy return to mainstream game development.
I found this to be thougher than ep4, yes ep4 did have more monsters but it also gave me access to tons of ammo. Not as much the case here, this ends up feeling more like a survival game
Having tried it as well... The problem is it is difficult but all for the wrong reasons. Making it feel really meh. It's not a very enjoyable wad to play. There is some specific parts in some levels that I think are awesome but other than that it isn't the kind of wads I'd put on my "must-play" list. Romero or not.
My issue with Sigil is that I can’t see anything. I’m on the 5th (I think? The one with 2 Cyber Demons... err Rocket Turrets) and I just can’t see a damn thing. I thought this was by design but by watching other RUclipsrs, I’ve found that they can see a hell of a lot better than I can, so it must be either something with my source port (GZDoom) or my settings. Hell it could be because I’m using Brutal and maybe Brutal fucks with the lighting, Idk. I just haven’t looked into it enough.
Main gripe it doesn’t encourage doom movement and play. Having run on seems like a punishment and have to pop over cover more than usual. Looks great for screenshots but not great level design.
Why... does every... F'n reviewer, keep killing every last monster on the map and complain about ammo afterwards?! Like can you atleast try to grasp the idea of... I dunno... walking past them and just exiting? Also ya might wana check your lighting settings, cuz some of those areas are way darker in your vid than they should be.
The midi soundtrack by james on the free version is also awesome! Heard even people saying, that it fits better to the old doom atmosphere jamespaddock.bandcamp.com/album/sigil-the-midi-soundtrack
Played it. It was alright. Didn't live up to the hype though. Played it with Brutal Doom. 2nd time. Horribly unfair. Never enjoyed having to deal with cacodemons, as they are sponges for bullets. This wad makes heinous use of them, much to my dismay. I guess my gripe is I'm used to Doom. As in haul ass and move fast. You can't do that here. You're forced to slow down. All in all, in my headcanon anyway, I like to imagine this is what Doom Slayer was doing since Doom 64 when he decided to stay in hell and fuck about before getting imprisoned. 10/10 "bitch" Daikatana reference
This was an excellent review of Sigil, talking with proper attitude about its hits and misses. Gman review of sigil give this the worst review, constantly whining about the difficult and complaining about the fact that he had to manage his ammo and had low space for maneuver in some points. Because god forbid a game to make any person to have to use wits and skill to overcome difficulties. The guy cant stand a challenge without get all sad, negative and whiny, and he miserably fully trasmits it in his review.
"Megawad"... It is not. Just because he made levels for the game doesn't mean he gets to have the right to change the definition the community has been using for decades. Though, it's all a misunderstanding -- he expected it'd still count as 15 levels because of the multiplayer-only arenas... practically, I guess so; technically, not. Sigil's level design is just cramped rooms, corridors, hallways, and ledges -- you could not be less creative. If it wasn't made by Romero, it'd get much less love than it does. "The big thing is that it was made by Romero" you clearly expose how you have a soft spot for it just because it was made by one person with a big name in the community, a human just like you, but apparently just because it has his name in it, a not half bad product becomes very good.
I said the levels were claustrophobic. I said there are better megawads out there. I said the novelty of it is that it was made by John Romero. I never said it was the greatest. It's also free.
"you clearly expose how you have a soft spot for it just because it was made by one person with a big name in the community" Are you a fucking idiot? Did you even watch the whole before writing this nonsense? either that or you are one of those idiots who wants people ranting about something for over 10 minutes.
"Sigil's level design is just cramped rooms, corridors, hallways, and ledges" Well I mean... that's the ultimate doom for ya, if you don't like doom 1 level desing, well, I think playing a map that says to be a continuation of that is not your best bet. Don't get me wrong, I defenitly agree with many of the criticism about sigil, but this one is a bit dumb. I also think that the map set is good enough by itself, and the advantage of being made by Romero is mostly the exposure, people don't usually check ultimte doom wads and they can be pretty great. I guess they are a niche.
Hector Castellanos Doom is timeless. You could even say... eternal. But seriously with a good sourceport Doom and its sequels are still a lot of fun to play, and imho more fun than most modern FPS games. The modding scene is a testament to that fact.
"The Music was made by some guy named buckethead."
Gman 2019
@K W Hey, he has different tastes, don't bully him for that..
@K W I love him

Granted, Gman is the same guy that played on Ultra-Violence and then complained it was too hard, so you know, he isn’t exactly all that credible
A nice and fair review. I'm not sure what people expected from Romero but I think he did a great job.

Yeah, you should give a try to a TC mod Jimmy made called "The Adventures of Square" (although the last episode is still in work)!
This review was waaaay better than THAT other one
The other was from an aussie who says that all games are "shie-e-et"?
I heard this was the doom expansion you either loved or hated.

Sigil is the embodiment of the phrase " welcome to hell bitch". Makes you fell like a pinball at times.
Sigil has two amazing soundtracks. The midi soundtrack is just as good as the buckethead version.
Out of all the great games this year, this is what I have had the most fun with.
This is a super solid review!
I love the tricks you could do to deal with the cyberdemons. The one in the second level is really satisfying when you figure it out.

Thy Flesh Consumed is fucking brutal. Perfect Hatred is still one of the hardest levels I have ever played for the original Doom
Good review, just one thing: the MP3 soundtrack is by Buckethead but the midi one is composed by James Paddock.
My story with Sigil: I tried, I died, I died, I died, I died.... f*cking awesome!
This WAD is the DC Universe of Mega WADs
I think Sigil is pretty unique, I'm happy Romero tried something new, but at same time, it still feels like a wad from 1995 ;)
Will it work with HDoom? :3
Thy flesh consumed is hard
Sigil is hard,but fair.
