    I was hoping for so much more when I saw this in the theater. It's a very unusual documentary. The editing done in what felt like a Fellini film with short cuts and it made it difficult to watch at times. There are also no interviews with people who new him, worked with him, or were close to him. It's a very unique documentary.

    It’s shame, I wanted to love this movie as the trailer looked amazing, plus I’m a huge Bowie fan. Unfortunately it’s style over substance (ironic, as Bowie delivered both style and substance in equal measure). It feels as though the director was desperately trying to be “arty” in a Bowie vein, but ends up following a very formulaic pattern: Bowie sound byte, cut to a performance live shot, cut to some arty visual effect. It seems you can easily try to copy a Bowie-esque, heavily stylised routine, but the end result is actually a little bit tedious. It’s basically just snippets of interviews sandwiched between stock footage, trying to be passed off as avant-garde rockstar memorabilia. A pastiche of true Bowie rockstardom, with actually not a lot of insight into the man himself

    Once Bowie put down the guitar and started fiddling with synthesizers, around 1977, I basically stopped buying his albums. He had a few good singles after that, like Sound and Vision, Heroes, Ashes to Ashes, and Modern Love, but you could tell he had given up as a innovative and creative artist. At that point, music became a side gig; he wanted to be a Hollywood celebrity.

    • @serpentinegallery
      @serpentinegallery Год назад +4

      To each their own, but to say that Bowie stopped innovating in 1977 when he helped pioneer (alongside names like Wendy Carlos and Gary Numan) the electronic music that dominated the '80s and inspired all music since? Absolutely fine if it wasn't your cup of tea, but to say it wasn't creative or innovative, and to assume he only had Hollywood interests when he had one of the biggest concert tours of the '80s, is wildly absurd.

      @spottedzw The second coming is not literal it’s energetic and individual. It’s a metaphor for every person no matter their religion having the option to wake up and arrive present in their own life. For you to be your own savior by living in authenticity. For you to act in a way that holds yourself in love and compassion for yourself and the many. And btw, this has absolutely nothing to do with what clothes one wears and how one does their hair.
