64 million euros in sweden, would not even build a basic station. The most expensive railroad upgrade project in europe per km is "Ostlänken" which despite being rather short has surpassed 10 billion euros and is only 150km long and is still not finished and prices keep climbing. They have even planned to build the end station at skavsta airport beaneath an active airport (imagine the cost to tunnel and build undearneath an existing complex like that. The whole project is VERY silly.

One small correction, the students started off by blocking the roads for 15 minutes every friday at 11:52 (day and time of the collapse) to pay respect to the 15 victims. This was followed by assault on the protesting students, and that was the straw that broke the camels back, and that caused university blockades and protests

I dislike that TLDR does not elaborate more on economy improvement in Serbia which is typically a bottom line for regular folks. And honestly, yes protests are paid by west. the cheap retoric, the uneducated bully approach, the corruption of ruling elite all speak against the fact that Serbia is chuck full of smart, hard working, motivated people. The dichotomy between country leadership and its base is killing me. But people that live in Serbia need to decide.

  • @ferdavid1715

Just a couple of things to put in perspective:
    1. The only real organic support Vučić has is from older, communist boomers who see him almost as new Tito. SNS as a party has much lower support than him and his own personality cult is keeping it afloat.
    2. These protests are not against Vučić, they are for very clear and detailed demands started by students, directed at institutions to do their jobs and punish those responsible for the deaths of 15 people. One of the key demands is transparency in regards to the contract and due process, to see who was responsible for it and needs to be punished in accordance with the law
    3. Vučić is desperately trying to make these protests about him to sort of defend the corruption with his own personality cult but protesters are fundamentally ignoring him. A president under Serbia's constitution is a ceremonial figure with little to no executive power, him stepping out of line is unconstitutional in itself. So, protesters are ignoring him as it's not his jurisdiction anyway .
    4. Protesters have stressed out they don't have formal leaders and don't want anything to do with the opposition as the issue of rule of law is not and must not be party - specific. Rule of law needs to be above any political party and they are not protesting to replace Vučić or his party anyway, they are protesting for the institutions to do their jobs.
    5. It's very clear that the issue strikes deep into the hearth of governing party (maybe even Vučić himself) so they are not willing to meet demands in any case, with Vučić's own popularity and the popularity of his party in free fall. He might not even be able to meet demands or his entire regime will unravel so it's possible that the government itself collapses even with the bad and disorganized opposition
    6. And finally, these started as protests in November but only escalated ever since, first by students, professors and deans shutting down universities, then the same happened in high schools, and even elementary/middle schools, then lawyers joined the strikes as well as some workers from the biggest (state owned) power company. The issue keeps escalating as more and more people join in with strikes and boycotts. Tomorrow (Jan 24.), there is a 1 day general strike planned that many private businesses (raging from bakeries to nightclubs) and workers joined together with massive boycotts, protests, blockades etc.
It will be interesting to see where this leads but neither side is obviously willing to step down as the protests escalate and people demand legal prosecution of everyone responsible for the tragedy

The lack of a suitable opposition is a big issue at the current moment. While Vucic's corruption and control over media is a massive issue, most people see the opposition parties as "Fifth columnists" who will do more harm to the country than good.
The problem with Vucic is that he's a very smart and competent man, which is far more dangerous than anything else. He knows how to play the international and, more importantly, the media game. So much so that he is the country's undisputed central figure. One way in which this is clear is in the older generation of Serbians. Because many of them haven't adopted newer forms of media through the internet, most of them rely on the TV for news. Since Vucic has a lot of power in this regard (E.G being great buddies with the CEO of PINK), the older generations almost entirely and wholeheartedly support him. This is incredibly apparent when you go to these protests, as you'll always find elderly people shouting at the crowds during their moment of silence. Furthermore, a lot of the violence also comes from this older generation. The man who drove the car into the woman was 80-90 years old (from what I remember reading) and the man who pulled a knife on a protester was around 70.

A bit more nuance and it would be great.
The protests are not about ousting Vučić. That's his narrative. The students have very clear demands that include 'institutions should do their job'.
Speaking of students, there were far more attacks on them than just that one incident that, absolutely and directly , was incentivised by previous Vučić's statement. And as other other parts of societies are getting involved, more repression is on the streets.
You also missed a very easy and important thing to do - use symbols. The students are using a bloody hand as one of their messages - recent reply from the goverment to that truly says exactly how the regime looks at the plebs.

This is a very badly researched video. There was no surge of corruption and crime after the fall of Slobodan Milosevic, in fact there was a decrease. That wasn't at all what brought Vucic to power, nor was there a landslide victory for him as you say here. In fact, there wasn't that big of dissatisfaction with the governments before his coming to power, there were just his diehard supporters marching through the streets, chanting slogans and stuff, the same stuff was happening ever since the radical party fell to the opposition. In 2008, when the SNS was created, it intensified a bit but didn't achieve anything in 2008 and stayed the same through 2012. People were dissatisfied with the previous governments due to the perception that they destroyed the industry through corruptive privatization, instead of it being destroyed due to a decade of sanctions, wars and the loss of Yugoslav markets when Yugoslavia fell apart. But Milosevic was propping up these companies for a decade, the workers were receiving their salaries, and the companies were working on paper, even though their product was worthless, so the subsequent governments had the unsavory task of liquidating failed companies, privatizing others to get money, and it all resulted in a lot of layoffs. Radicals, at that point led mostly by Nikolic and Vucic, were using this to create a perception that the previous governments were at guilt for that. They were actively lying about any deal made by the previous governments, overblowing the costs, like a certain bridge that was proved to have costed 300 million euros still being claimed by Vucic and his party as costing 1.3 billion. Then there was a perception that the previous governments lost Kosovo, which was another spin, where they got another unsavory task of fixing shit produced by Milosevic and the Radicals during the nineties. And the fourth important thing was the previous governments falling out with the west, mostly with Angela Merkel, over the issue of Kosovo, aka over not settling the issue. She clearly supported SNS at that point, and there was perception among the population that the SNS has support from the EU. The previous ruling party, DS, didn't have many achievements to brag about, and their offer during the 2012 election was that everything would go to hell if SNS got in power. Election wasn't at all a landslide. It was practically the same as always, with DS getting a little bit better result in parliamentary election. Vucic was completely wiped out in his own race for the mayor of Belgrade, by the acting DS mayor and was literally crying on the TV and threatening the people with his resignation from politics altogether. DS presidential candidate won the first round of election for the first time, since the first round was usually won by the Radicals or SNS after that but unexpectedly lost in the second round in a tight race, so SNS leader Nikolic became president. This was the point when Vucic got a breakthrough. Nikolic, as the president, did everything he could to hammer a deal that would put SNS into government, and it meant promising the parties that were minor partners in the previous DS lead government to become major parties in the new government and SNS becoming the minor partner, even though they would hold the biggest share of MPs in that government. And it worked, and since the Prime minister position was filled by other parties, Nikolic managed to get a government position created personally for Vucic, the previously nonexistent First deputy prime minister. From this position, Vucic, now returned from his break with politics that lasted for about a month, started his signature campaign of supposed fight against corruption and crime that mostly meant a PR stunt for convincing people that there was a rampant corruption and crime in the first place. And it worked, people fell for it hook line and sinker, then he managed to force a government reconstruction that placed him as the Prime minister and pushed minor parties to lesser positions or absorbed them, while also sidelining Nikolic and forcing him out of politics. Other than that, the constant theme of his rule was demonizing politics and politicians as a profession, both opposition and his own SNS and portraying himself as above politics. That created adoration for him and him only with his supporters and disgruntlement with politics altogether with people not supporting him. The opposition in Serbia is perceived as elitist and out of touch because Vucic invested hard into creating that perception, that all politicians are elitists and out of touch, both the opposition and his own party members. This led to an absurd situation where Vucic's supporters ascribe everything good to him alone, but for everything bad they blame people around Vucic. There's a common saying among his supporters that goes like this: Vucic is so good, but poor guy simply can't get on top of all the bad people around him in SNS.

For everything said fine but such nonsense sentence as "for criticizing NATOs bombing campaign and international sanctions threats by harassment of journalists", I mean during 1999 I do not remember any single Serbian Journalist even those who were pro hardcore Western orientated that were supportive of the NATO bombings, what is even worse all of those pro-NATO journalists back then turned their tide criticizing NATO after they made a war crime by hitting the Serbian National TV station full of journalists and workers and made a series of civilian target bombings so I really not know why such dramatic sentence is needed without doing a fact checking before this one? Related to Vučić hope that students will persist and stay united, whole Serbia is behind them now with exception of the minority that support this failed system.. Just because we are anti corruption does not mean that we are pro-NATO or pro-West, corrupted EU showed its face multiple times and I am all in for an open referendum on this topic after this joke of government goes down.

6:41 if you dont know why big sandwich is there, explanation is basically that he pays people in sandwiches too go and support him, he puts them in a busses all around Serbia give them sandwiches and gets them where his meeting is so it seems that he has bigger support also he pays elderly people to come by same principal. Also he pays some people around 30euros to write comments or do criminal stuff like running over students by cars.. Basically Sandwich or sandwichers(people that sell themselves) is other name for bots what work for SNS..

All the incidents he stirs up are a cover up for him basically defacto giving Kosovo more independence than it ever had.

I wouldn't be so dismissive. While I'm not a conspiracy theorist, nor do I support vucic, it has happened before in other countries. It was also pretty much an unspoken fact during the Milosevic student protests which lead to his ousting.
While I personally don't think it is the case, I haven't completely ruled it out. Just my thoughts though-

I hate Vucic with all my guts but still voted for him because the opposition is even worse. There are a lot of scavengers there trying to use the protests for a colored revolution, foreign influence is definetly there. Thankfully EU flags were banned at the protests and Marinika Tepic and Djilas were kicked out. We have to be really careful if we want to topple him

If you want a government job in Serbia, you must vote for the ruling party. If you want better prices on seeds, fertilizer etc, you must vote for the ruling party.
They can also call you to a meeting where you cheer the president or do an anti-protest against the opposition.

Either you trust the court or not.
If yes, then he is NOT a war criminal, he never was convicted for anything that is a war crime.
On the other hand if you don't trust it, ask also why Gotovina and Markac were firstly sentenced to more than 50 years combined and the freed as if there was no evidence.
My opinion, the Hague court was a shit show.

Great video. As a citizen of Serbia, I'm ashamed that this man is the president of my country. Here are some facts about protests not mentiond: the symbol of protesters is "Bloody hand", symbolising blood on the hands of the corupt officials that caused the death of 15 people (many of them children) that were killed on the train station in Novi Sad. Now, sympathizers of SNS and Vučić have made a counter symbol, which is that same bloody hand, but "giving a finger" to all that "Stand against president and people of Serbia". If we lived in a more democratic and normal country, half of the ministers and government officials would step down and, our rulling party, SNS, whoud be recognized as criminal organization, because all of money that it's members illegally earned. There were more affairs dating back to early days of this system, but I already wrote more that anybody would want to read...
