    Everything after the 5min mark of this video is a HIGHLY inaccurate depiction of what happening here.
    First, the no-confidence vote that got rejected isn't from Melenchon; he isn't an MP right now. It was voted by France Unbowed, the Greens, the Communists, and some Socialist MPs. France Unbowed isn't the only left party condemning the socialist restraint at the no-confidence vote; both the Communists and Greens are also not happy with Faure's decision. Also, as you said, Melenchon isn't the NFP leader, he is the unofficial leader of France Unbowed but not at the National Assembly.
    One thing that you didn't mention even once in this video as to "why" the Socialists and especially Faure are acting like this, is the upcoming Socialist congress that will decide who will become the leader of the party. The socialists are split almost 50/50 between the Faure camp and the Hollande camp. Faure is seen as an NFP-sympathetic socialist (so more leftwing) while Hollande is in favor of reaching to the center and maybe even trying to reconquer the center-left abandoned by Macron's agenda becoming more and more rightwing.
    This Congress is a very high risk for Faure who might lose his job, he is trying to create distance between him and France Unbowed to appease the center-left of the party. Faure is in an all-in situation, especially at a time when the center-left of the socialist is gearing up for the next elections, with François Hollande and Raphaël Glucksmann both trying to take the lead for the presidential election running on an anti-Melenchon platform while Faure has always been an advocate for a single left candidate in 2027 (tho he isn't a fan of Melenchon himself).
    Also, the 7:15 comment about the presidential election, while true, does not paint a complete picture. Before the 2027 elections, there will be the 2026 municipal elections, which are really important for the left as they directly decide who is elected to the Senate, an election in which the socialist leadership is being challenged for the first time in decades. Right now the Socialists are in a difficult situation, most of the anti-NFP socialists are actual socialist mayors of big cities like Hidalgo in Paris or Payan in Marseille and they fear an alliance between France Unbowed and the Greens to take over the remaining big cities (back in 2020 they managed to conquer a lot of biggest cities of the country like this with Lyon, Strasbourg and Bordeaux). The 2027 election is obviously something that everybody on the left is thinking about but the priority right now is the 2026 municipal elections, and the tensions are already at an all-time high. Depending on the results it will completely change the way the left will go into the 2027 elections, if the center-left socialists maintain their hold on the big cities they will probably not be united for 2027. But if France Unbowed and the Greens actually manage to win a couple of big cities, let's say Paris, Toulouse, and Marseille, then the balance of power will shift in favor of Melenchon.
    That's why the key election that is explaining the current tension within the NFP and within the socialist party is the 2026 election.
    Also, categorizing France Unbowed as far-left might be true in the UK context where everything more left of the labour party is considered far left, in France's context it's absolute nonsense. The French far-left has a history and a clear definition, it strictly refers to the non-reformistts parties, which France Unbowed isn't. They're a reformist, republican, classic left-wing party. The radical left might be a good middle ground if you prefer, but the far-left are Trotskyist parties like Lutte Ouvrière, the Nouveau Parti Anticapitalist, Révolution Permanente or even some anarchist organizations like the UCL and Action Directe.

    A few things to clarify:
    1) Mélenchon said that the Socialists were "no longer partners", but in the same breath that they were "circumstantial allies". It's a weird way to put it, but this clearly means that he does _not_ want to fracture the alliance -- even though he probably wishes he _could_ (and likes to use that threat). If the left really split, Macron could seize the opportunity to call snap elections once again, hoping to take advantage of leftist divisions to have a shot at getting an absolute majority once again. That was essentially his (mis)calculation in his previous gamble. Even though he promised not to do it again, I don't think anyone trusts him on that.
    2) From the Socialists' perspective though, Bayrou is a much better Prime minister than Barnier. Barnier was from the Republicans, the Socialists' old archnemesis, while Bayrou's centrist party has always been much friendlier to them. Bayrou even once supported Socialist candidate François Hollande against Republican candidate Nicolas Sarkozy during the runoff of the 2012 presidential election. And Bayrou did concede them a few things. This means that the Socialists can hope to sell some improvement to their electorate. Having said that, they're still too fragile to stand on their own in a legislative election, and would still need to form a union with France unbowed in such an event.
    3) Now this _could_ all change if Bayrou and his government manage to pass a law to make the next legislative election proportional. In this case, the Socialists wouldn't need to be allied to anyone. That would free them. For some reason though they don't seem too keen on the idea. Maybe some remember their old glorious days of absolute majorities with nostalgia, but thinking they could pull it off once again would be delusional.

    • @french907
      @french907 11 дней назад

      It's worth asking how much of the promises made by the Socialists were genuine.
      Some measures like the scrapping of the decision to fire 4000 teachers, net zero were promises already made by the previous Barnier government.
      Additionaly because they want a budget that doesn't cause more debt what will cancelled will be taken by new econimies elsewhere.
      Unfortunately the former president Hollande seems to be as delusional as You point out.
      I can only hope he's dismissed and ridiculed.
      Finally the Party is on the verge of splitting Faure was elected with just a very meager 51% of the vote in the last socialist congress.
      His adversary was anti Mélenchon and anti NUPES.
      Faure's decision should be seen as appeasing the elephants still in the Party (Hollande among them) to remain first secretary in the next congress in April.
      Many of the youths of the party fiercely disagree with the Party's decision not to censure

      Is proportional representation in France something that could happen in the near future?
      I thought it was an eternal election promise that is never fullfilled

    • @french907
      @french907 11 дней назад +10

      @johannes123abc4 It looks unlikely now for several reasons.
      The RN wants a 50 % gain for the winner of legislative elections in essence an election similar to the U.K
      The central Bloc and the Left will never accept that because of the majority it would give the RN.
      Then this alliance goes against the interests of France Unbowed because without a two turn legislative elections their left leaning allies would no longer need their support.
      Finally the French right who's part of the government is opposed to it because they opposed it since their formation in the 1950's and 1960 due to the fact that every party that makes a small percentage would have representatives making majority building even more difficult than now.

    • @FireCat34
      @FireCat34 11 дней назад +4

      Melenchon Ego killed the alliance

    • @ArturoSubutex
      @ArturoSubutex 11 дней назад +9

      @ Well, Bayrou has advocated for proportional representation his whole life, and he's now the Prime minister. There is also a majority of MPs who are nominally in favor. Although the exact formula could be a source of contention. Fact is, with a political landscape split in 3, uninominal elections by constituency are much more dangerous, and each party can risk near obliteration every time.
      Plus, Bayrou sort of needs this, because his party would then be more independent from Macron's. And, more than anything, taking away any prospective of 1 block getting an absolute majority would also alleviate the risk of Macron trying to call snap elections once more, and this in turn would solidify Bayrou's power relative to Macron.
      So I think they _might_ be smart enough to go for it. If it ends up being blocked, sure enough one party that has blocked it will bitterly regret it, and rather sooner than later.

    Well, you should be careful because LFI (France Unbowed) is not far left, but hard/radical left.
    It must also be said that the Socialist Party is questioning their political strategy, especially because they are divided and their latest internal reunion ended up in a 36-30 vote in favor of non-voting the motion. The no confidence motion was by the way voted by all the other Left parties and even some socialist MPs decided to go against the party's official line with 8 of them voting the motion anyway. The divisions within the party are deep, between the slight majority that is in favor of the Left coalition (NFP) which is mostly the new generation and urban/sub-urban ones, and in the other hand the righter wing of the party that is more keen on breaking up with LFI (which they see as repellent) and is composed of the so called "elephants", historic figures of the party that were mostly responsible for the party's collapse in 2017 because of their involvement in the unpopular Hollande's presidential term. Their positioning is more center-left, hence it explains why they did pretty well in terms of ranking during the European elections with Glucksmann (which is the archetype of center-left that is Macron-friendly) by taking some part of the Ensemble potential electorate (and that's why Ensemble did way worse than before).
    Keep in mind that Macron's interest is also to tear the left parties apart, especially by pushing for a divorce between the PS and LFI.
    Socialist in favor of NFP (left) : Chloé Ridel, Pierre Jouvet, Olivier Faure, Fatiha Keloua-Hachi, Dieynaba Diop...

    A very important part that (I think) wasn't clear in the video: Had the PS voted the motion of no confidence, the government would have survived as the RN gave the votes needed anyway. I think this important because otherwise it seems that the PS saved the government. In fact, the government didn't really need them to be saved as RN would have not voted the no confidence vote.
    In my opinion, the PS is being smart by approaching the independent voters who would be interested in them but see a problem with regards to Melenchon's LFI. Melenchon is a bit making a nothing-burger because either way, the PS growing in seats would still make him a strong actor is a leftwing alliance. More votes for NFP helps him more than it hurts him. But that's my view.

    • @french907
      @french907 11 дней назад

      I find it questionable if the PS can win many Ensemble voters as the media and government have started a smear campaign against France Unbowed and more generally any program that somewhat breaks from neoliberal orthodoxy its only a matter of time before this rheroric is turned against the rest of the French left

    • @Kornilovungreat
      @Kornilovungreat 11 дней назад +4

      The PS isn't being particularly smart, as splitting now from the NFP in favor of a government that's not well liked by french people to appear more "reasonable" and to touch "independent voters" (I don't know what you mean, but they're not touching any disaffected voter, at most older or right wing voters that in truth would not vote for the PS). Staying in the alliance, appearing as it's leader and as the reasonable ones here would've worked much better to rehabilitate their image to left wing voters. Now they have shown their true colors, and we'll anybody that had doubts will now continue to vote for the green party if they're for a more "reasonable" left, and the others will just continue to follow France unbowed due to them never trusting the PS in first place.
      Let's not forget why the PS is in this position currently, they lost their hegemony due to their non left wing policy during the Hollande presidency. He is a very much disliked person in the left, even though journalists love him for some reason. The part of their voters that didn't care about left wing policy left with Macron to the center party, and will probably still follow them for the next elections. We'll have to see what's gonna happen now, but France unbowed hopes for the PS to split to call them traitors, and the rest of the parties are waiting in a similar manner. It's an annoying waiting that's caused by Emanuel macron's prime minister choice.

    • @ohimats
      @ohimats 10 дней назад

      You make a lot of good points.
      The thing I'm trying to get at is that the NFP can try to widen their voter base. Some people would vote for LFI and never PS, the reverse is true too. I personally think, the PS is doing the right thing *for them* because they are reaching out to more voters. If the NFP wants to govern, they will need more voters (btw LFI also does everything it can to attract more voters as well).
      The only issue I have with the LFI "traitor's" narrative is that it will make it harder to stand behind one program, like what happened earlier in the year. I think that the left could benefit in not doing any friendly fire and instead focus on playing "good cop/ bad cop" with the government. NFP has its position because of LFI and PS and everyone else in the alliance. That was a real victory for the left in France, one they want to replicate (and do even better).

    • @french907
      @french907 10 дней назад

      @@ohimats I think the ability for the PS to reach center leaning voters is limited.
      It happened during the european elections but these elections are always the exception rather than the norm.
      Plus with how much media propaganda has been made against France Unbowed and more generally any left leaning movement that is critical of neoliberalism.
      It's good to ask whether this electorate can still see the PS as an option or how much it has been radicalised towards the right and is beyond reach (in my opinion).
      The PS signed an agreement that they then reneged.
      Additionaly Olivier Faure is seeking reelection as The Socialist Party's first secretary, his recent turn to the center should be viewed as him seeking to appease the old Elephants of the party (Hollande being one of them).
      I wouldn't expect much from the government first they had "Les cahiers de doléances" that followed the "Grand Débat" that were completely ignored, then 2022 legislative elections, then the European elections and finally the legislative elections in 2024.
      The center and right under president Macron and PM Bayrou is not ready to compromise they've made that very clear.
      They are obsessed with their holy neoliberal doctrine.
      To conclude I really resent that sort of stability blackmail the government is practising.
      Saying to other opposition parties :
      "You may not like this budget but we'll accuse You of being irresponsible for not passing a budget even though we are in the minority and we normally wouldn't be able to pass this budget ".

    Hello TLDR, as a French citizen I would like to correct an error you systematically make in your videos on French politics.
    La France Insoumise is not a far-left party. It is only presented as such by its political opponents and the media in order to decriminalize and demonize it.
    Yet France Insoumise's program is not far-left, nor is its ideology. It's a left-wing party. For example, if we compare their ideas with the program of the Socialist Party and its president François Mitterrand in the 1970s-80s, France Insoumise appears far less radical, and in fact like a completely classic left-wing party.
    Moreover, the Conseil d'Etat, France's highest administrative court, issued a ruling in March 2024 (a few months before the 2024 European and legislative elections), stating that France Insoumise could not be considered a far-left party, but a left-wing party.
    I also think to remember that you mentioned the Rassemblement national as a right-wing party in a previous video (I'm not sure about this point). This same court decision declared that the Rassemblement National was indeed an extreme right-wing party. And if you think about it, this party was founded by a Waffen-SS and still embodies a racist ideology and against the rule of law, so it makes sense.
    I hope this comment reaches you :)
