My brother died of a heroin overdose. Seeing him “dying slow” and with tombstones in his eyes was gut wrenching. He was found in an abandoned house with a needle sticking out of his arm. The only thing he had on him was a comb in his back pocket. My mother wailed when she found out about his death. These lyrics do hit home. Thanks for the video my brotha.

"a one way ticket on an airline made of snow"... great combo of Hoyt Axton and Steppenwolf. "Sookie Sookie" is another great Steppenwolf song. Great songs perfromed by Hoyt are "Lion In The Winter" and "Boney Fingers". Then also he wrote "Joy To the World" for Three Dog Night and the "No No Song" for Ringo Starr.

Our vocalist here, John Kay, has a remarkable life story. He was born in a part of Germany during WW II which later was claimed by the Soviets and annexed into Russia. Two points here: German was his native language and unless I did the math wrong he did not begin learning English until he was 14; the rest of the story of how he and his mother eventually made their way from one war zone after another to the USA is interesting enough to read it yourself.
Kay did not write this song. Hoyt Axton wrote this and The Pusher. It amazes me how well Kay sings these songs and with such authority. I don’t think it is brash, I think it is that he is empathetic and genuine and has invested himself emotionally to these songs (and others) so completely.
Biz, your discussion of this complex song and subject was eloquent. Thank you.

Outstanding reaction, Biz!! So cool to watch younger people discover this music, and to see how it touched your heart/soul. John Kay (singer and driving force behind Steppenwolf), as a child, escaped Soviet Occupied Germany after WWII. Listen to the song "Renegade" which tells the story. Like "Snow Blind Friend" it's a song that captures you and makes you feel as well as hear the fear and pain. As you've probably noticed there is a very present and heavy blues vibe to most of Steppenwolf's music. If you want to listen to something very different but very cool, try "Disappointment Number (Unknow).

    • @soultrampamplification8425

Biz, since you seem to enjoy songs that are real, try "Aqualung" by Jethro Tull (live version to get the full affect). It's a social commentary on homelessness in the early 70's. The song tells the story of a derelict homeless old man. But it does so from two perspectives, that of the old man, and the other as he is perceived by society. It's a brilliant song. You won't be disappointed. I saw Tull live circa '73 when this album just came out. They absolutely tore the place down. Best concert I've ever been to. You'll understand when you see the video.

I appreciate you doing this one. Most reaction channels I frequent will touch on Steppenwolf's better known songs and radio hits, but this one is a somewhat deeper dive into their catalog. This is a deeply personal song and was written by Hoyt Axton, same guy that wrote The Pusher. Apparently Hoyt and John Kay shared similar feelings about losing friends to drugs. Steppenwolf was one of my favorite bands in the late 60's, early 70's, and anything you react to of theirs you will probably like for one reason or another.
