  • In this episode of RIO's "How To Fly Fish" series, I explain how to get more distance when fly casting - something most anglers strive for.
This film runs through some of the basic tackle choices that can make a big difference with regard to how far a fly is cast. In addition, I explain and demonstrate a number of casting techniques that will improve everyone's distance.
RIO's "How To Fly Fish" videos are a series of short films that explain all you need to know to learn a particular way to fish or cast. Where applicable, each film talks through the gear that you need, shows how to rig the gear, how to read the water, and how to fish that particular technique. These educational films are packed with information and top tips designed to improve the knowledge and skill level of all fly fishers. Each one is bought to you by a RIO employee or a RIO brand ambassador.

Double Tapper lines are really the line that doesn't get enough love. The vast majority of people think they are very different but the first 30 feet is pretty much the same. I don't see people shooting line with their weight forward lines. They are normally casting 40 feet of line and just getting frustrated. Today most people have longer rods and those longer rods handle a double taper better. To bad I can't buy a DT 4 WT intermediate line that isn't clear tipped.

Hello Simon,I 'm curious about that a 10’4 switch rod with double haul, and a 11' trout spey rod, the same weight, same line like RIO intouch trout spey ,which one spey cast farther?

Thanks for you question. If everything is equal you will probably cast further with the longer rod. There is a good guideline that you gain 10 feet of casting length for every increase of 1 foot of rod length, so if everything works, you'd get another7 feet or so. Hope that helps...
