    My advice to new comers buy the taigen full metal over the heng long cheaper ones as you will spend more upgrading it.

The update video is around here somewhere and also includes some of the new trucks that are out. I just picked up an extra 1/6 scale Roc hobby Jeep for a good price as well as an sas desert raider kit from dragon and we're going to see if we can combine the two and come up with something reminiscent of rat patrol.

    I had one of these a few years back, and they are a lot of fun, one of the only problems i had with them is the battery time, 20 minutes of time then you have to charge up again, be good if they lasted up to an hour, would love to get another one and the only thing that puts me off is the battery time..

    • @garyhoff2178
      @garyhoff2178  4 года назад +1

      With modern battery tech that's easy to do. A 5000 mah lipo will run my heaviest tank for over an hour, and you can get batteries the same size with as much as 10,000 mah, which would run my Tiger One for almost two hours. If you're not comfortable with lipos, you can also now get nimh batteries with up to as much as 8,000 mah (that's the biggest I've seen, but higher mah may be available). Spare batteries are cheap and it's an easy thing to swap batteries when one runs out of juice. So if battery life is all that's keeping you from enjoying this wonderful hobby, go ahead and buy a tank!! ;)

    When I was in the Army I used to play with the real thing. In reality, they are dirty, dangerous, and very hard work. Tank crews don't get to stop at five o'clock, and you will operate in extreme temperatures, particularly if you are simulating NBC (nuclear, biological, and chemical) conditions. Whilst these boys are playing with their toys, it would be nice to hear an element of recognition for the tank crews that operation these beasts.

    • @garyhoff2178
      @garyhoff2178  6 лет назад +1

      I agree, and thanks for your service. As a vet myself, I'm always careful to call myself an RC Tanker, not a Tanker. The men that took these machines into combat were a breed apart and deserve our respect, and one of the ways I think we do that is by doing our best to maintain accuracy and always making sure the young people that see these toys realize they're modeled on very serious machines, machines we need to preserve our freedom to play with toys like these. :)

    Okay question, for a beginner would the taigen metal airsoft T-34/85 be good and if yes could i put a small cam on it so i could control it at my desk when it is moving around / i'm downstairs and i can control it upstairs via looking at my pc(sorry if i worded that terribly) PS out of all reviews i saw yours was the best.Edit Is the IS/JS better which should i get

    • @garyhoff2178
      @garyhoff2178  4 года назад

      Fist, IS and JS are the same thing. JS for Joseph Stalin, which is Ivan Stalin in Russian, hence the IS. The T-34 would be a fine first tank, very dependable and solid. The only thing I don't like about the T-34 is the small battery size. The JS-2 holds a full size bat and that leads to many more options. If your budget allows I would get the JS-2. Next, we call it FPV, for First Person View, and I've put cameras on many trucks and tanks. As for watching it on your PC, that all depends on the system you go with. I usually set up for goggles or a TX mounted screen, but there are systems with bluetooth that have endless possibilities.

    Hi from the UK! love your channel very informative! I have a Taigen IR tiger 1 with a clark TK 22 board fitted. I am considering buying a Sherman to IR battle the tiger, however torro and taigen IR Sherman's in the uk seem crazy expensive. I was wondering what your thoughts are on the Henglong Sherman with metal tracks and gears, and how easy/practical it would be to convert from a bb to an IR tank? I would also wish to install barrel flash and recoil. Recoil units for the Sherman don't seem to be available in the uk, unless pre-fitted to IR ready Shermans, any thoughts would be hugely appreciated.Thanks in advance, and hope my question makes sense?

    • @garyhoff2178
      @garyhoff2178  8 лет назад +1

      Hi, sorry for the delay. I assume you'll put another TK22 in the Sherman, which is what I have in mine and you already have in your tiger. The HL Sherman is decent, and you may be able to get an IR ready Turret for it. I have the Imex/Taigen Sherman and I think it's well worth the extra money. Very robust tank, and there are videos of it here on this channel. If you do go HL, converting airsoft to IR can be done, and it's not all that difficult, you just have to gather the plug in pieces. You could probably use a lot of the IR stuff from an IR Panzer III. I think your best bet would be to look for an IR Sherman turret, but I don't know if the Taigen turret is interchangeable with the HL turret. Hope that helps.

      There should be six or eight phillips screws in the bottom of the tank that hold the upper hull on. Taking these things apart is no big deal, just take your time and maybe get a dish to hold the screws as you remove them. Once you get the upper off you should be able to apply power directly to the elevation unit to see if it's working. Good luck, and think about signing up at the forum at RCU. There are lots of great guys there that are always willing to help out with questions and advice.

      You need the infrared turret. That's the only one that has recoil and muzzle flash, but don't worry about the IR part because you just won't use it. I know another RC Tanker that always buys IR tanks because he doesn't like the BB and he wants the recoil and flash. The easiest way to fix your tiger would be to just swap out the turret and repaint. They have the whole turret here, but you might find it cheaper if you shop around, and if you want to just swap the parts you might be able to find them for even less.

    hi Gary,
    I am thinking of getting a tank. Which one would you recommend: the tamiya kv-1 or the tamiya king tiger? thank you!

    • @garyhoff2178
      @garyhoff2178  6 лет назад

      I've never built a tamiya, but I've always preferred the King Tiger. It will also be easier to find reference material for a KT.

  • @panzerwolf494
    @panzerwolf494 7 лет назад

    These little buggers get expensive. Tamiya, by far is the upper tier. Imex/Taigen would be the middle. Heng Long, and from my experiences, Mato, would be the entry level stuff, of course Mato has a couple standouts that take it up into the middle area like their Sherman. But basically Mato just sells Heng Long with metal gearboxes and the option of metal track upgrades.
    I personally love my Taigen Jagdtiger and just ordered the Komodo+ because the track recoil sucks balls.
    I doubt i'll ever own a Tamiya. Depending on the setup you want they can run anywhere from a fully upgraded Taigen to well above 1k, and you still have to build, wire, and paint it which isn't everyone's cup of tea.
    I dunno if Trumpeter is still in this, but i had their T34 which was ok, but there was no upgrade market for them and they weren't parts compatible with anything, so you were stuck with the "super dash" gearboxes unless you knew electronics and a lack of sound.
    I think my next project might be a Taigen Sherman modified with a scratch built calliope rocket system. For now though still working on the Jagdtiger, gonna see if i can make some decent foliage camo with some modeling lichen and hobby turf

    If I'm looking at a 1/16 heng long tiger with the bb shooter, it should still have the IR kit mounted,as well, most of the time, right? Too bad infrared doesn't sense armor thickness or angle of attack, or different modules like track hits or turret hits. The RC world could take a hint from World of Tanks

    • @garyhoff2178
      @garyhoff2178  5 лет назад +1

      No, the Airsoft Tanks do not have the IR emitter and the base for the Apple installed. Heng Long got out of the RC tank game so now taigen is pretty much the only game in town, besides of course, Tamiya.

    • @garyhoff2178
      @garyhoff2178  5 лет назад

      Yes, you can, and if you're building a tamiya compatible tank you can use the tamiya or impact apple and base, and you'll want to sink your emitter 9mm deep in a 6mm tube, as that's a requirement for most club battles, like they have at Danville.

Some intermediate to advanced modelling skills are necessary for the Hooben. Here's a link, but be advised that Hooben has hit or miss reputation for customer satisfaction. I want to buy an rc tank model for purpose of a ww2 RUclips movie I'd like to make. It needs to be as realistic as possible, especially the sound. I don't want the tank to look wobbly and jerky when it moves like in an old Godzilla movie. It needs to give the illusion of bigness. I wanted a T34. Can you make any recommendations please?

    • @garyhoff2178
      @garyhoff2178  7 лет назад +1

      Depends on your budget. Personally, I haven't had much luck with T34s. The track and suspension system just doesn't carry over into scale RC like other tanks do. If you want it to be smooth and have good sound and you're set on a T34 my best recommendation would be the Imex/Taigen T34 all metal edition and an IBU2 or an Asp for sounds and functions. The IBU would be difficult to squeeze into a T34 and the Asp (if available, limited runs) requires some knowledge of hobby grade transmitter programming and at least a seven channel radio for full functions. You should join the forum at RCU and ask there for advice. You'll find many guys that have built T34s with all different results, both IR and airsoft.

      Gary Hoff What scale do you think I should buy?

    • @garyhoff2178
      @garyhoff2178  7 лет назад

      Well, your budget isn't big enough for 1/6 so I'd go 1/16. For that much you can buy or build a couple of nice tanks, or maybe one super nice tank. You need to decide what you want to do with it. IR or airsoft? Club battles and trips to Danville or just plinkin' squirrels in the back yard? The biggest problem with any 1/16 T-34 is space. It's a very tight fit in there and getting aftermarket boards and such in there can be a challenge, even to the most experienced of modelers. I take it right now you don't own an RC tank? If that's true, I'd start with one of the cheap Heng Long's from ebay, either the Tiger or the Sherman, since both of those come with the very latest Heng Long electronics. Take a look at this video, but in place of Tauchpanzer think Tiger or Sherman. The Tiger is much cheaper, $90 delivered, but the Sherman can be had for about $140 delivered.
      ruclips.net/video/cFU5J2vVFks/видео.html
      And this is the ebay tiger

      Your best bet might be to buy an $80 plastic tiger as a donor tank. This will give you all the motors (elevation, rotation, etc) and the wiring for the lights, MG, etc. It also shows you how to connect everything. For my first mato all metal tank (a P3) I used a cheap walker bulldog as a donor. It's a lot faster and cheaper than buying everything separately, and you also get a cool static Tiger to detail as you will. Try this tank for your donor
