This was a weekly ritual, watching this after the Saturday morning cartoons and before The NBC Game of the Week with Joe Gariagola and Tony Kubek. A stop at this era, would be my very first destination with a Time Machine…. 😊

    I'm not sure when I pissed off myself more at 10, 11, 12 years old (1977-79): when I missed the Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Hour or This Week in Baseball (TWIB notes!) on Saturdays. Like many have pointed out already the intro music and the closing theme were so iconic. My reaction when the closing music started: Already?! As a young baseball player and collector of TOPPS baseball cards, TWIB must have been the fastest half hour in the history of TV. At least in my baseball loving eyes.
    I remember the Pete Rose belly flop into 3B so well; and the closing in slow-mo ... the music was every bit as effective as NFL films.
    "How about that!?" Mel Allen was awesome. Unforgettable voice. He did the homespun charm for baseball what Keith Jackson did for football.
    And did everyone see that clip of the fan falling over the fence after the Craig Nettles (NY Yankees) HR?! That mighta' left a mark.
    I came back with an edit for the commercials a bit surprised some avid TV fan in the '70's didn't mention Gordon Jump from WKRP in Cincinnati in the Mobile 1 Oil commercial.
    Larry Wilcox was waxing his car in the other commercial, soon to don a cop uniform and a motorcycle for the show CHIPs. Ah, TV in the 70's, indeed.

    How I long for the days when guys were complete ballplayers with good fundamentals. Hit n run and advancing runners was the name of the game with runners on. Risked life and limb (yet still far fewer injuries than today), ran the bases aggressively, and shortened their swings at the plate with two-strikes, etc. Even a Mickey Mantle commercial, too!
    Oh how the game has changed!!!

    • @Rocky_Maher
      @Rocky_Maher 2 года назад +4

      Other things of note from video:
      -George Foster hit 52 HR in 1977. In the footage (Dodgers vs Reds), he didn't stand around admiring his blast, he was already on first base when the ball cleared the wall.
      -Jim Rice was a natural pull hitter, but could shoot a ball the RF when they pitched him outside (Shift be damned).
      -A young, unknown Dennis Eckersley tosses his only career no-hitter in front of only 900 fans in Cleveland...which had the largest capacity of any stadium in MLB at the time.
