They needed to have protection barriers in front of the support structures. We have them in our area for our interstate bridges since we have barges going up and down the rivers. A barge took out I-40 bridge in Webbers Fall in 2002. Since this is major port why were there not any barriers in place.
Yes people have died, but you have to realize this is going to affect the income of over 100,000 people there. Many will be without work and prices will go up. With the port being closed it’s going to create ripples in the economy effecting millions in the long run. Average people will lose their homes, etc.
@@tooltimeterryif they are smart about it they will cut up and drag the bridge in pieces out of the strait the big ships use, then worry about the recovery later. It could be open in less than a month.

So sad And scary People are crazy if they think that crew on the ship really wanted to hit that bridge. They obviously lost control long before they lost power. And radioed it in. But. Exactly. Who's to say the engine was not tampered with while docked. Workers are spanish. We just do not know who is in our country and what their intentions are. Smh
The big failure is the design of the bridge base in the water. Again the Bridge was build back in 1977 so 46 years ago. Back than ships where not that size not even half the size. So what should had happened by Port and State is the upgrading of the securing of the main channel to ensure a head on collision would had hit diverters and not the foundation of the bridge itself.
Even the best of bridges built today aren’t designed to take that kind of impact. By its design if one support fails the whole bridge fails. A lot built today are designed so that if one support fails only the spans on either side fall and everything else stays intact.

It collapsed because of being hit by a ship. You've got a weird sense of priorities.

Barriers will stop a barge. They won’t however stop a cargo ship of this size going those speeds.

That’s like saying a train should never be able to move a car. It’s not built to support a million tons from the side.
I couldn’t correct the error above, but, depending on the size of that cargo ship it could have weighed more than 300,,000 tons, 600,000,000 lbs.

Totally preventable! Rock riprap potecting the supprt piers would have taken out the ship BEFORE it struck the bridge!
Yeah if it extended about 100 yards beyond the support. It would take that kind of distance to stop that much weight.
