Nice to see someone encoding their capture-only videos in a 4:3 aspect ratio instead of upscaling and letterboxing to 16:9 - it actually fills up my entire CRT monitor that I'm watching on!

A fun little tip I learned years ago, when restarting Windows 98 hold down the shift key and it will only restart Windows instead of rebooting the entire computer, so it takes far less time. Thanks for the video, I still have my original SoundBlaster Live! and these drivers will really come in handy in the future.

The VXD drivers + SB16 Emulation I found are the best combo for Win98 if you are using a SB Live 5.1 (SB0060 or SB0100). The SB16 Emulation resources can be set manually in Windows 98, if you uncheckmark 'Use automatic Settings'. On modern motherboards, try to disable USB before setting IRQ 5, Port 220, and DMA 1. These are best for compatibility. Even though Windows 98 reported that 'PCI-to-PCI bridge' was already using IRQ 5, it reports a conflict, however, DOS games within 98 seem to work OK with IRQ5! Another tip, if you are playing Sierra games in a Windows 98 DOS window, you may notice the digital speech breaks or is out-of-sync. Setting the Audio buffer to 8K in the RESOURCE.CFG file seems to overcome this issue, especially on faster more modern motherboards.

Really, watching tech videos on a phone is a really shabby experience, why do people do that... And btw I do like watching a 1280*1024 Win 98 desktop from time to time just because it's something I would have drooled over back then. @philscomputerlab  3 года назад +1

It does depend a lot on the games but for 1600x1200 a GeForce 4 works well in Windows 98. Voodoo 5 would be needed for Glide games. With Radeon a 9600 type card should do the trick. This is for Windows 98. If the game runs under XP, then you have a lot more options and easier to find cards.

@@philscomputerlab thank you. I will be hunting down a 9600 pro/xt or if I'm lucky maybe a 9800 pro. After watching a lot more of your videos I do like that the 9600 doesn't require the external power connector and the maintenance is much easier. I am noticing that they're 128/256 vram flavors of those cards. For system ram you have recommended 512 megs for 98 but how about vram? Also where do you source those cheap after market coolers? Long story I used to be a slot tech back in the day and they used Ati 9700pro/9800pro video cards on some of the slot machines and we would lose those cards right about two years of service. The fan would usually lockup and the video card just died. When I finally get my hands on one I will just replace it. Need to keep that old hardware alive. Thanks again for all you do. Excellent channel.

This also brings up an issue I came across with my Audigy 2ZS Platinum in Windows ME. Since the driver support is lacking (The drive bay module isn't recognized by official old ME drivers), you need to take the official XP drivers and change the ini and inf to support ME. There was a slick program that automated it. I can't recall what it was called, this was like a decade ago I did this. Wolfenstein 3D is a good example. Playing in Windows 98se, if any other sound is going on when you shoot a gun, it just plays that sound instead of the gun actually firing sound, same goes for if your firing, any other sound effects become the same ass that. The truth is that I am surprised, the audio with these drivers of my Sound Blaster CT4830 sounds incredible. I decided to embark on the adventure of trying new drivers, since I previously had some Sound Blaster audio drivers that worked fine. And yes, it's like they say... finding the correct drivers for a Sound Blaster is quite a hassle, since there are so many versions and so many LIVE CD's for so many models of Sound Blaster Sound Cards that it's quite an adventure to find them the right ones. Next I am going to leave Pro and Cons of the 2 drivers that I tried:
    Old drivers I had:
Pro: They worked. Unlike Phil's drivers, the old drivers could be heard much louder.
Cons: They were heard in Mono format.
    Phil's new drivers:
Pro: They are heard in Stereo. The audio coming out of the speakers feels so professional.
Cons: So far I don't have any. The only thing I can emphasize is that these drivers do not recognize my Sound Card as a CT4830 with its EMU10K1, but rather as an E800 (I don't know if that might be a problem in games in the future, for example).

The issue with these cards is there are so many versions of them and creatives download section is pretty shit. If you find a live! Hey i have a question about playing DOS games with real old hardware:
So i just got the very same Earth Worm Jim 1 & 2 games my dad gave me 15 years ago i remember they played fine on the win98 machine i was using (both sound effects and cd audio music).
It´s a DOS game that runs on Windows aswell but still needs a sound blaster compatible audio device.
I´ve got my hands on a Compaq Armada M700 which happens to have a ESS Maestro 2E (Ess 1978) which comes with a "DOS FM/Synthesizer" module to enable Sound Blaster Pro/16 compatibility.
It´s working so far except for one thing:
When launching the mentioned game(s) it goes into a cmd like DOS enviroment in fullscreen, then ejects the CD and asks for the CD at the same time.
So when reinserting it, the game will launch, play sound effects but NO CD audio tracks.
If i use the WDM drivers provided by Windows Me, the Cd won´t eject and play CD tracks fine in the game but no DOS FM/Synthesizer module and no sound effects enabled.
After installing the Ess drivers not provided by Microsoft (i think they´re vxd based, but not sure what it means) and no reboot, both Sound Effects and CD Audio works in the game, no eject of the CD while launching the game.
BUT after rebooting the machine, the same happens again: It Ejects the disk, after reinserting it, it launches fine but then no CD audio.
I don´t know maybe i can use the Microsoft drivers and use some kind of Sound Blaster Emulation??
The machine runs a Pentium III 500Mhz and 256MB RAM, should be capable of doing so.
My older Compaq Armada 7770DMT has an older ESS sound card and uses the WDM microsoft drivers aswell BUT has a "Sound Blaster compatible (WDM)" listed in device manager and in fact plays both sound effects AND CD audio just fine but the machine isn´t fast enough to run Eartworm Jim 2 in full speed (EWj1 is fine though).
Armada M700 also has a "Ess Maestro2E sound blaster compatible (WDM)" driver module avaiable but no hardware for this listed in device manager but the driver can be seen if i go to "update driver" and see a list of all avaiable drivers.
    Do you have any idea??
I really want to play those games and also native on hardware and the Compaq Armada M700 would be excellent if the driver issue would´ve been solved.
I tried many different drivers from different OEMs and different versions aswell but none of them seem to work as they should.

Hi! Devices from that era didn't interface with USB, they connected with plan MIDI cables, so your computer had to have a MIDI interface. Often under the label of MPUI-401 and sound cards have it on the gameport / joystick port through an adapter. You could also buy dedicated MIDI interface cards and maybe a basic USB MIDI interface works in Windows 98, but not sure about that...

That a known problem with any specific fix I could apply?

With that card don't expect perfect compatibility. It's strong in windows and has DOS as bonus. Also other factors could be at play, too fast machine, other expansion cards, BIOS. If you can, test with another machine to rule out this.

That might be on me then, seeing as the problem arose after I upgraded the CPU from a 633mhz Celeron to a 1ghz Pentium III (I wasn't able to discover this for some time though as I had an unrelated RAM issue that prevented my PC from being usable for a while which I thought may have also been the culprit but I was able to rule it out once I got a good RAM kit replacement).
