  • Peter and Shay caught up while they were both travelling through Prague earlier this year, and only had a small hotel room to shoot in. In this tutorial, Peter shows you how you can still find light in a small space and create beautiful images without the use of flash lights or a studio.

    What I enjoy most about this style of video is that it makes you think about what you would try or change when you would be the photographer and it's great when you then see that what you come up with is what happens next.

      @@PeterCoulsonPhotographer I always see her ' photographically of course ' in a Bleached Bypass sort of photograph. High contrast, yet desaturated and full of grunge. It suits her look and attitude. Thank you, Peter.

    Great memories! You and Shay did an amazing job, I would say you have more "keepers/ stunning images" in this video than many of your others. Shay looked great and from shooting with her in the same room next door I can confirm that the room was small and most of the light was indeed only by the window. Nice job Peter!

    I for one liked your joke. ;) All three subsets (chair, hall, window) were excellent and would build to crescendo and then kind of repeat that wave. I think my favorite was her in the hall by the door and mirror. I did think the curtain play--by her and simply just for the lighting provided some beautiful and stunningly sexy shots. It's amazing to see how you work in even smaller spaces and expand it in such a fashion.

    I like how you focus on getting things out of the frame that distract you, kind of how ny mind works, if you can eliminate all the crap you're 90% there, assuming the model and light is good! Have to try more horizontal shots too it's so easy to fall in the vertical instagram trap if that's where a lot of your photos are ending up but it looks so cool on your shots. Also compliments to the cameraman ofcourse for the assist :)

    My best pictures were taken in hotel rooms. One in particular is The Society Hotel suite that overlooks NW Davis St, Chinatown, Portland, Oregon. The building is ancient, the room is simple, the lighting is good from any angle regardless of time, day or night, and there are tall windows that frame an exceptional view of downtown Portland, Oregon. It's timeless, charming and somewhat special. And if not the suite, there is a corner room that overlooks both streets.

    Amazing shots in all areas of the room. Just wondering what your setting would have been. Was the ISO raised for the shots at the door, and did you keep it higher for the shots at the window ledge to get the background sharper. PS the model was sensational.

    When I see Peter or rather when I hear him say cool cool cool or gorgeous I think of the thousands of times that I have heard other photographers say that you shouldn't say that to models because it could be misinterpreted, so I stay longer still confused. However, I think that when working with models with nothing or a lot of clothes, reinforcing the model with words like "You look super, pretty, beautiful and even reinforcing how sexy she looks" is a way of telling the model that her work in That moment is going well, their poses, their expressions in conjunction with the space and the light are giving excellent results.

    • @PeterCoulsonPhotographer
      @PeterCoulsonPhotographer  11 месяцев назад +1

      I ask models at workshops in front of all the participants what is the word they would least like to hear and they all say 'sexy'. I use 'cool' because it is positive but also fairly neutral, it just lets them know that what they're doing is working

    I now think that Peter can shoot photos with his eyes closed in absolute darkness with a potato instead of a camera and they will look better than 90% photos out there. Just the ease with which he achieves these incredible results almost makes me want to switch to plumbing or carpentry 😅

    I'd really like to see you do a shoot and explain the lighting with a girl who isn't a stunning model. Most photographers aren't going to have a Bec to shoot with on the daily, they are going to have people looking for wedding, senior pics, etc. Getting a good lighting setup on joe average must be completely different than a 10/10 model.

    • @PeterCoulsonPhotographer
      @PeterCoulsonPhotographer  11 месяцев назад +2

      I treat lighting the same with everyone. It's hard to do a RUclips video with someone who isn't a professional model as most 'average' people won't feel confident being filmed to go on the internet with extra cameras pointed at them.

    Die you try some of the pictures in the first 5 minutes of the video of her sitting in the chair in colour as well? I think the different colour temperatures from the lamp next to the chair and the light coming from the window could look really great.

    @S: Many thanks for posting in this session and for sharing. From my point of view, you have completely stollen the attention and it has become more model centric rather than lighting centric. I know this is not the point of the session, but I like a lot the way you dress. I think you have a smile that you try to hide, but at the end it emerges. From your gaze, one of the things I like the most is the way you look at the photographer with arrogance and indifference.
    @M: Many thanks for supporting Peter in this session. I like a lot when a camera captures a Model that is being photographed/filmed from other angle, because it sounds to me like: the art of posing. I like a lot your public internet channel because in your videos you provides "distilled" information, in the sense that you go to the point of interest and you keep the thread, there is a objective and it is met, without "beating around the bush". As a P&B's collaborator that you are, I would like to offer to you my logistic support, accordingly to my availability, in case you need an indoor shooting location (artificial light, because natural light is poor), that I own, in the capital of the country where I live.
    @P: Many thanks for this session, it has been amazing: the model, her outfit, the color tones (red against brownish/yellowish tones is astonishing), the mirror magic (there is nothing that can match the beauty of a Model except her own reflection, e.g. 10:50), the little corridor, the window, the video recorders, ... and all of this with much simplicity. Definitely, the output of this session must be in color, not in BW.
