As strange as this might sound, this made me quite emotional. I grew up sailing out of Steppingstone Marina. My dad was a launch operator there when he was in college. Then I became a launch operator there before and during my undergrad for 5 summers. It was the best job I ever had. Some of my best memories are of the thunderstorms that would move across Long Island Sound, at times completely shrouding the lighthouse in sideways rain, before it would move our direction and drench us. That shack on the Steppingstone dock is sturdier than it looks, but there were many times when I was on a shift by myself in a storm, where I contemplated running for my car. And about that phone booth, at a certain point, the Great Neck Park District was considering getting rid of it, but so many people who visited Steppingstone admired it and couldn’t believe something like that ever existed. I’m glad it’s still there. That marina, lighthouse, the Throgs Neck Bridge, they’re all prominent landmarks in many family photos and videos. Since my family moved away, we sail elsewhere now, but every time I get on a boat, I think about the good times I had at Steppingstone and on Long Island Sound. I could go on and on with more stories from there, but I’m not sure I could fit it all in a RUclips comment. Thanks so much for documenting and sharing this adventure. This place means so much to me, and I’m glad you were able to experience it.
Wow, I'm speechless. Thank you so much for this AMAZING comment. It means so much to me that you enjoyed it and that it brought back such beautiful memories. Thank you so much for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it.
I grew up in Kings Point in view of the lighthouse. For decades the light house in foggy weather would sound it's fog horn throughout the night. I would give anything to have recorded that sound. Those nights I would lie in bed and just listen for it's bass sound. At some point they turned the fog horn off for good. Damn I wish I could replicate that sound.
Growing up in Pelham Bay, I would hear that horn on cold winter nights in between the noise from trains riding the subway el between middletown and Pelham bay. park. I miss those sounds of those days where life was a whole lot simpler.😊

Nice video. There are many lighthouses in the Chesapeake Bay. Near Baltimore harbor there is a abandoned fort called Ft. Carroll. I used to go fishing next to it and have seen videos of people who explored it. It's about a mile from the local boat ramp.
@jamesg.hromnak2333 You could see that it was basically all boarded up. I had to respect the no trespassing sign posted by the Coast Guard. They have a station nearby. It would be risky going on the lighthouse property. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.

Nice video, I know the area well, I used to keep a sailboat on City Island. You caught a great day, that waterway is usually busy with a lot of boat traffic , usually barge traffic. You must have been in slack tide, when the tide is going in or out the currents there can be really strong, at times I had a lot of trouble under sail trying to make headway against it. With that lighthouse it must have been something else to build it, they must have created a coffer dam to build the foundation for the light house. When storms hit that building must get pounded, can you imagine living there? I believe it is still operational, or was, though like most lighthouses it is automated. Back in the day the keeper would need to light it, they burned whale oil then kerosene to create the light, later they switched to electricity where they could. Thanks again.
Love your videos!! I’m from throggs neck and kayak a lot of the places you have been.. two years ago I kayaked to this lighthouse from throggs neck (edgewater park) It was far but my dad followed In his boat.. you should check out David’s island in new Rochelle. Super cool place and lots of history. When I was a kid we used to explore there and there were still lots of old buildings . A few years ago they took them all away but it’s still cool

Another enjoyable vid,the lighthouse was unusual, looks like a Dutch colonial house in red brick just stuck out in the middle of the sea.stay safe all the best from England.
Thanks! It's all about planning the route and picking the right day to go out on the water. I have lots of safety measures in place. Someone always knows exactly where I am, when I'm on the water, and when I'm off the water. I always wear my PDF, dry suit in cold temperatures, float bags inside the kayak, I carry a whiste, paddle float, and bilge pump too. Thank you so much for watching and commenting. Cool lighthouse. I would of been very tempted to climb that ladder if only for 5 min. We have a couple cool lighthouses here on the Chesapeake Bay. I’ve kayaked out to the “New Point Comfort Light House” commissioned in 1804 by Thomas Jefferson. Still in service and relit in 2021 after renovations. It was once connected to the main land of the middle peninsula until the hurricane of 1933, now it’s just off shore about a quarter mile or so, but easy to paddle out to. There’s another one called “Wolf Trap Light House” 6.5 miles off shore between the Eastern Shore, VA and the Middle Peninsula first lit in 1894, which I plan on paddling out to this year. In fact when I do, I could make the entire 14mile trek across the Chesapeake to Cape Charles and camp there. 🤔 It’s a possibility anyways, but I’m first looking to upgrade from my 12ft to a 17ft kayak so I can make better time. Keep you posted on that goal!
Thank you for making and posting the videos so that we can take a few minutes out of our lives. I've not been too fond of the littered up trashy islands, but that was a fine paddle for the Big City, very pretty, thanks for sharing!

Another great video exploring some of the hidden gems that exist in the NY/LI area for kayak adventures! You're a brave man being out on the water in this weather... I wish I could get out right now... but I'll give it a couple of months!

Hey Matt, i was so happy to see this video! I remember you talking about it. You really lucked out with the weather, as of this posting we had snow and temps in the low teens.I have found memories of fishing all around that area, as well as sailing that stretch of the sound I grew up right by the Whitestone Br, so this was my playground! Thanks for taking the time to film your adventures! I look fowled to the next one.
I planned it so that I got out before this cold blast. I took advantage of the beautiful day. Thank you so much for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it.
Hello Skipper Matt! What a nice surprise to see a new journey arrive so fast since the last one. It was another great escape but I did miss seeing you prepare another great meal. Best wishes!
PS - Bravo for the demonstration ONCE MORE showing respect to the posted "no trespassing." That plays a good example to young people watching your explorations.
I hear you on the cooking! I'm working on that for the next video or a video coming soon. Stay tuned! I'm so glad you enjoy the videos that include me cooking. Thank you for watching and commenting. I'm grateful.
The current from tide flows in from the east along the Connecticut and Westchester coastline and then flows counterclockwise along the north shore to the east
There is something about lighthouses that draws a person in. I've visited the Montauk lighthouse multiple times. I hope they raise sufficient funds to be able to restore this historical treasure.
I agree! There's something magical about them. Thanks for watching and commenting! I go both Montauk and Fire Island Lighthouses often. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
Great tour as I remember seeing the lighthouse every time, I pass over the Throgs Neck Bridge and wondered about the name and history of it. I still would like to see how you mount your camera gear and how you get the camera to pan from you to the front. Take care Matt, can't wait for your next adventure.
We had a deep freeze following this trip. I took advantage of the warmer day before the cold arrived. The water around NYC doesn't seem to freeze as fast, but there's lots of ice around currently. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
I spent so many summers on Long Island Sound as a kid. I was up near Larchmont but I always enjoyed looking out and seeing what was out there. There was a spot called "Executioners Rock" that always got my attention and of course Fort Slocum. Awesome to see you braving the chilly waters and cold to see those places up close for the first time. I don't remember seeing this lighthouse as a kid but so awesome to see a piece of NY history up close. Thank you for that. Also awesome to see your channel grow since your first couple of videos. Congrats on almost 15,000 subscribers! Won't be long.
Thank you so much for your kind words. I appreciate you watching and commenting. Thank you for watching the sub count grow. We're making progress thanks to people like yourself enjoying my channel. I'm grateful!
Kudos to you Matt you did something I always set out to do but never did taking my kayak to that lighthouse awesome it was like a postcard picture. For some reason the lighthouse seems closer to the Throgs Neck Bridge weird. You never let us down with your adventures. There's another little red lighthouse off chick Beach Virginia Beach that one I think was sold to the public and it's a private home one day I have to tell you what happened to me fishing under the Chesapeake Bridge. God bless Matt
Thank you so much for this amazing comment. When I was out there on the water near the lighthouse, the Throgs Neck Bridge felt pretty far away. I appreciate you watching and commenting. God bless 🙌

Yet another interesting, engaging video! I’m taken that others find joy in your catch phrase … “Alright, we’re paddling!” As I commented before, I say that aloud every time I start out on my kayak or paddle board. Sometimes, I say it aloud to my zTV along with you, Matt! Cheers!
Thank you so much for your kind words. Thank you for making me smile. It means the world to me that you and others get a kick out of my catch phrases. I appreciate you watching and commenting 😀
For a brief moment I thought there was massive wind. Then I realized it was the stabilizer of the camera playing me dirty 😂 great video as always Matt! stay warm the weather is silly outside. I really appreciate you respecting the no public access.
@tomroggero I'm curious what specifically you are referring to? There's no wind noise. I take pride in my audio. I'm not sure what you mean by the stabilizer of the camera. It's perfectly still for being on a kayak. It's an action camera so it's super stable. I'm just curious what you are referring to. Thank you for watching and commenting.
I started that a few videos ago after someone asked me to in the comments. I try to listen to viewer suggestions whenever possible. Thank you so much for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
I noticed some incredible homes along the water. I'm sure the whole area is wealthy. Great Neck is very nice. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
Back in the day, i.e. the late 1960's my older brother and I rented skiffs in Queens, Long Island, NY and made trips to both Stepping Stones Lighthouse and Execution Rocks Lighthouse to fish for Black Fish, aka Tautaugs in the rip-rap of the lighthouse foundations. One foggy day under the blaring of the foghorn we were nearly swamped by an inter-coastal oil tanker coming down from Bridgeport CT. as we were rocked by the waves we laid across the skiff to trim boat; one minute I was looking to the sky at my feet and the next I was looking to the water at my feet. As the waves quelled we weighed anchor and took off to port in a hurry as the first vessel was followed by another larger. Stepping Stones was named for the Siwanoy legend of the Bronx Indians cornering the devil in the on a spit of Bronx land to which he hurled large stones to use as steps to flee to the land now occupied by the lighthouse. Execution Rocks Lighthouse has a grim origin in that criminals were chained to the rocks a low tide and left to the crabs and eventual drowning. There was also a story of a serial killing sailor in the sailing ships day that would rob and kill young sailors and dump their wretched bodies overboard to cover his crimes. Another great presentation! Kudos!
i grew up and lived in kings point and very Familiar with stepping stones park and light house my old stomping grounds ha ha ha i dont miss it because of the cold weather but otherwise its very pretty and great place to live
I grew up on a boat right out of a marina at the end of the bay just across from Rodmans neck.. I haven't seen anything that says it's non operational, but I also didn't see any light. Is it possible it comes on as it gets dark, or could we just not see it? I'm not certain. That's a great question. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.

So why hasn't the allocated money been used to restore it. Needs to be investigated. The light station was transferred to the Town of North Hempstead. In 2014, the Town of North Hempstead entered into a partnership with the Great Neck Historical Society and the Great Neck Park District to raise funds to rehabilitate the Lighthouse. The National Park Service and New York State Senator Jack Martins provided $165,000 and $100,000 in grant funding, respectively, to support the restoration efforts.
I put a link I found called "Save the Stepping Stones Lighthouse" in the description of the video. It's basically a fundraising site. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.

Wow, this is an AMAZING comment. I'm digesting all of it. Thank you so much, and keep me posted. Thank you for watching and commenting. I'm grateful.
Thank you for making and posting the videos so that we can take a few minutes out of our lives. I've not been too fond of the littered up trashy islands, but that was a fine paddle for the Big City, very pretty, thanks for sharing!
@qaannat Thank you so much. I really appreciate you watching and commenting. I really try to be relatively diverse when it comes to the variety in my videos. I try to find beautiful nature wherever I go. Thanks again.
I love to visit lighthouses. This is absolutely 💯 stunning ❤. I have never seen a lighthouse shaped like this one. This is another awesome adventure! Thanks so much!!
There are a couple like this way up the Hudson River. Rondout is one, off Kingston I believe.
I enjoy your videos I’m glad that you take us with you exploring thankyou
Man I'm excited to watch this video. Had the day off and you and another of my favorite channels put out videos!!!
Another great video exploring some of the hidden gems that exist in the NY/LI area for kayak adventures! You're a brave man being out on the water in this weather... I wish I could get out right now... but I'll give it a couple of months!
Thank you so much for watching and commenting! I really appreciate it. 😀
great adventure you sure are loving it, one day i wanna see the you making day or multi day trips down the coast or take a train ride and kayak back like down the deleware river back home. either way i watch like and sub buddy safe travels.
Wow this is great!! Thanks for sharing your new experience..
Thanks for watching! I appreciate it. 😊
Loved your video to shooters island light house, very cool. All of your videos are so good. 😊
@@mildredllorens9526 *Stepping Stones Lighthouse 😀 Shooters Island was my last video. I knew exactly what you meant. Thank you so much for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it.
Thank you. I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Thank you for another great video.
Thank you for watching and commenting! I appreciate it. 😀
Nice, kinda jealous that you have open water. My local water is still pretty frozen.
I'm grateful!
if there was a place to beach the kayak, i could not have resisted the urge to look into the building.
God bless 🙌
BTW you are such a consistent channel, Love that!!!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate it. I work hard to be consistent. It helps with growth. I go sick for a month a while ago and the channel slowed down a lot. There's a good flow going right now. Im happy. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Dope. Check out Execution Rocks Lighthouse.🔥
I definitely will. It's on my to-do list. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
Would be great to do a tour around LI of all the kayak-able lighthouses over the coming months. Great video as always
Thank you so much for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
Thanks again for your interesting fun videos. I usually can see that lighthouse when going over the Throgs Neck Bridge. But I didn’t know its name.
@@steves1749 Thank you so much. I appreciate you watching and commenting as always. 😀
Nice of you also to show the temperatures in Celsius. 😉🇸🇪
I started that a few videos ago after someone asked me to in the comments. I try to listen to viewer suggestions whenever possible. Thank you so much for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
Beautiful view

I live not far. Many many , many. Very very rich peeps over there . Great neck area.
I noticed some incredible homes along the water. I'm sure the whole area is wealthy. Great Neck is very nice. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
You went this far,go up 😮😊❤
You know, I try to respect the signs and don't want to blatantly document myself breaking the law. It was clearly posted. Thanks for understanding.
Kudos!
Wow, I'm going to need time to digest this amazing and lengthy comment. Thank you so much for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it.
i grew up and lived in kings point and very Familiar with stepping stones park and light house my old stomping grounds ha ha ha i dont miss it because of the cold weather but otherwise its very pretty and great place to live

I grew up on a boat right out of a marina at the end of the bay just across from Rodmans neck.. I really enjoy watching your videos in that area, Rat island Hart island, Westchester creek, eastchester creek Flushing bay and now Stepping stones! You should check out Execution rocks when the weather is a little better.. a little further out east but a great back story!
Thank you so much for watching and commenting. I definitely want to go to Execution Rocks Lighthouse in the future. I really appreciate you watching and commenting 😀
I have not read all the comments and I just found your channel…what are you paddling and associated equipment?
TY!
My kayak is an Oru Kayak, Bay ST (Black Edition). Is there specific associated equipment you are interested in? Thank you so much for watching and commenting. I appreciate it. Welcome to Two Feet Outdoors 😀 👣
You mention the Manhattan skyline, but from some of the vantage points you've filmed from, the new Long Island City skyline and/or Brooklyn skyline should be visible, and you should mention those, just as a shout-out to your fans/subscribers from those boroughs... 😊
I heard that there are giant stingrays in those waters. 400 pounders
I'm better off not knowing these things. Ignorance is bliss. Hopefully the creatures stay underwater and I stay above the water. 🤣🤣🤣
@@TwoFeetOutdoors You'd have better odds at a casino than catching a quick glimpse of one.
@@dinomak69 Perfect 👌 I don't need to see one. 😱😱😱

Is it still lit?
I haven't seen anything that says it's non operational, but I also didn't see any light. Is it possible it comes on as it gets dark, or could we just not see it? I'm not certain. That's a great question. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
I’ve been meaning to ask you, do any of your Ubers give you crazy looks when you show up with a huge backpack?! Mike
Google Earth says the light house is open 24 hours. Must be an old foot note.
Maybe I should go back at night 🌙 🤔 Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.
Was that a nest we could see up by the light, do you know? Another excellent video showing yet more of NYC I’ve never seen on TV or in films 🫡
I saw it too, pretty sure it's an Osprey nest as he's shown us Ospreys in some of his other videos ! I never even knew they were in New York before 😂
Yes, it definitely looked like a nest to me.
Hey man, cool video as always. What do you think of that kayak? I want to get into it this year, kayaking, I'm in South Jersey and would primarily be in the small rivers around here. Is there much worry if you capsize?
next lighthouse- bug light in orient pt!
Thank you for the suggestion. I will definitely consider it for the future. Thank you for watching and commenting. I appreciate it.

Who long has it been non operational?

It’s in rough shape
Definitely is. There's a link in my description for "Save the Stepping Stones Lighthouse". It's a fundraising site for the lighthouse. 😀
Matt do you have an email where you can be contacted?
Yes, my email address is listed on the main page of my channel. Thank you 😊
I bet Matawan Creek would be a cool paddle in New Jersey in the spring. You could tell people about what happened in 1916

@tomhobbies6888 Good plan! 🤣🤣🤣
I don't think the park where you launched is a public park, think you need to be a Kings Pt. resident
I didn't see any signs indicating that. Parking was wide open. The gate was open. It's a beautiful park. It was very quiet. The bathrooms were even open. I enjoyed it.

Be careful that light is in very bad dis repair
It can use a bit of sprucing up for sure. I posted a fundraiser I found in the description of this video.
Looks like the treasured piece of New York history is falling down. I bet if a guy had a weeks worth of food an fuel he could stay there a week and no one would know.
