      I see Dubois in 2 to 3 years being a franchise center under the tutelage and player example of Kopitar who will be retiring around that time.
      Byfield's biggest strength isn't scoring but being an exceptional chaser that can hunt down pucks and even take possession away from top level NHL players.
      With both Dubois and Byfield spending the next few years training under the Kings system i think both will be groomed to some day take over that #1 line and be a dominant force.
      Most likely after Kopi hits retirement. Byfield-Dubois-Kempe.

      His goal scoring leaves alot to be desired. And he doesn't really look like a play driver. I think he's good but idk about what we thought good. Kopitar, and Kempe are the straws that stir that line. You can put Grav on that line and he would average .5ppg. when kopi retires we shall see. They do have denault and PLD though. The kings also run a pretty rigid 1-3-1 ish scheme as well, so that might affect a player like byfield as well.

      He's only be able to legally buy beer for a few months. Given his broken ankle and his bought with a virus. Their was more setbacks also. Considering all this he's doing just fine so far. Yes stutzle has more points now. But he won't for long. Also I'll take a few less points and take QB's tenacity and ability to break up plays, steal pucks and his D zone play any day.

  • @luc2o
    @luc2o 11 месяцев назад +37

    Remember at the beginning of 22-23 season he suffered a broken ankle that delayed his season start and set him back a little. Even in juniors he was a good goal scorer but not an elite goal scorer. he is more of a playmaker which he is doing now. Using his size, speed and reach to get on top of players faster than they expect, control the puck and use his great vision to find an open linemate. I couldn't be happier with his development. ok, MAYBE a few more goals but I'm sure they're coming. One more note regarding his slow showing in the U20, he was still the youngest player on the team.

    Byfield broke an ankle in a bad fall into the boards at the end of camp in ‘21 then came into camp in ‘22 and got sick and lost 20lbs before he played a game. Anyone who called him a bust didn’t pay attention to what was going on with him. He’s finally healthy to start a season and showing why he was picked where he is. He’s huge and he’s fast and got elite play making skill.

    Im so glad he and Laf are breaking out, both got labeled busts way too early. They were drafted during unprecedented circumstances because of the pandemic and hadn't played in a real game in ages. Stutzle and Raymond developed much quicker, but not everyone is like that. I'm sure we will get more late bloomers from the 2020 draft, it's just too hard to pinpoint how all the time off affected each guy's development.

  • @luc2o

    Kings don't necessarily play a traditional center-wing system but use a 1-3-1 where the closest forward to the puck attacks with the other 2 in support regardless of position.

    A true franchise player.
    At 21 he still has 5 years before he hits his veteran prime years... In 5 years he will also already be a vereran franchise 1st line forward specifically trained in the Kings system and raised with the team.

Beyond that Byfield in his current age 21 year is on pace for 70 points and it wouldn’t surprise me in the least to see him land higher than that given the line he is on. Say he gets to 80, are we really declaring one player has a higher ceiling because he got 10 more points? That’s pretty foolish and falls in line with the logic that people like this have been running with the moment these two got drafted. I’m not even saying Byfield will be better than Stutzle but declaring the conversation decided already is just admitting you don’t understand how players develop.

    What a great piece. Your pre-draft take that he would take time to develop turns out to be spot on. Some of the clips you had here were bits that I hadn't seen before. Quality. Btw, yes Kempe and Kopitar are great players. But let it be said here that Kopitar had played with a number of left wingers through the entirety of his career. The only consistent winger who worked with him long term as you probably know, was Dustin Brown. Otherwise many LW'er's were tried and hardly anyone one worked. I think in the 2012 cup run Justin Williams was on his line. Otherwise, there has been no one who has so well complemented Kopitar's line as Q and of course Dustin Brown.

    He's the second coming of Joe Thornton. Thornton went through the same growth issue early in his career and the Bruins shipped him out. Unbelievable playmaker who does things with the puck few can do. He shields the puck so well with his big body to buy time. Goal scoring will evolve, but his gift is playmaking.

  • @mitsanut5869
    @mitsanut5869 11 месяцев назад +1

    It took several years for Kempe become the force he is now due to different factors (Sutter whom I otherwise respect a lot, kept him unnecessarily too much in the doghouse, etc.). I always saw his tremendous talent and I was just hoping he wouldn't quit because that kind of stuff will play games with your head.
    Byfield, on the other hand, had been a part of what Kings are doing more and better than other teams - they give their young players time to develop in minors (Ontario, CA) where they employ exactly the same system of play as the big boys team. So it's just not Byfield who has grown into his shoe size but a few others who are now regulars as well. And they all play very well.
    I also think that Kopi's influence on young players plays a big role in how they play.
    Kopitar, being a captain, is a workhorse, either the best or amongst the best 200 feet players in NHL. (How he does it in his age is beyond me, frankly).
    All these young guys see what Kopi or DD have accomplished and how super competitive they still are and that alone pushes them to be better and better.
    It took long 4 years since Kings hit the rock bottom and slowly climbing their way up by instituting the rebuilt through their own youth players development and, of course, by making pretty solid trade acquisitions that made this team as good and solid as this year.
    I agree with the author of this clip with everything he says, I just thought I would add a little bit of my observations.
    Also, Byfield is a pure traditional power skater, and that alone makes him quite special in this league. Typical power skaters are disappearing from the league, and we can see in his case that adding power to skating is only benefitial for any player. He's got very good upper body movement that helps him to propell faster than most just in few strides. Plus his long legs, and you've got yourself a tremendous advantage against the opposition.
    You said something about his weak shot.
    I'd say that Kempe in his young age hit so many goal posts it was mind boggling. Byfield just last year hit many posts as well. I think that's got to do a lot with perhaps wanting to make the perfect shot too much because that's what you were hired to do, and you're holding your stick a little too tight as you try. I think once he gets comfortable enough and he's even more efficient in his other responsibiliets, he will be just as lethal as Fiala, Kempe, Moore and others who seem to score goals at will when they're on the top of their game.
    Anyway, I wish him and the King's the best and I anticipate deep run into postseason. They are now a complete machine that is fine tuned. But you never know what can happen. There are at least 20 teams in the league who want to have their shot at the big prize, too. And they all have great players, too

    • @drewsacks
      @drewsacks 10 месяцев назад

      A long post but you get an upvote from me. Good points about Kempe. Part of his issue was being moved from wing, to center, to wing, and not having consistent linemates to play with. Anyway, you make good points.

    Although we all can agree that Byfield is playing better this year, let's remember he is on a line with 2 monsters: Kopitar and Kempe who are cold blooded snipers and very good passers as well, yet there are 6 Kings with more goals than Quinton so far. Yesterday's game against Montreal was a perfect example - 1st period, Kopitar makes a pass to Fiala, he goes around the defensman and draws the goaltender, Fiala then makes a perfect pass to Byfield who has an open net and fans on the shot. In my opinion, Byfield still has the mentality of "I'm so glad to be here", rather than "I belong here". He should be having daily meetings with a sports psychologist that can help him reach his potential. He still has a way to go.

Even then there are guys who just don't fit with the teams that drafted them. Coaches/systems change and a guy who was a great fit for one coach/system may not fit into another coach's gameplan. We've seen the opposite happen as well. Guy's who have a monster season or two leave a team chasing big money only to fall short of what they did with their last team.

People forget that different people mature and develop at different paces. People see other teams picks (notable recently fantili and bedard) go straight to the nhl and hold their own and immediately turn on their teams picks and call them busts because they need to mature a bit in the AHL or have a comparatively slow start. Lafreniere is a victim of the rangers awful ways of handling prospects but it seems he's really popping out of his shell this season, rangers fans on twitter are despicable and asking for trades of players constantly and calling prospects busts (Rangers fan myself).

    He’s only putting up points because of who he is playing with. Look at his stats before being moved to the first line. Not sure how he earned a spot on the first line. Can’t score either

      A points a point in the NHL. It'd be a sure bet that if a guy never scored a goal but was point a game guy assist wise he'll be on the All-star team. If he does that consistently over 10-15 seasons he's a guaranteed HHOFamer.

    • @GunslingerGaming1
      @GunslingerGaming1 11 месяцев назад

      And yet, every single analytic and advanced stat disagrees with you. He is a play driver and creates high danger chances, turnovers, possession monster and makes his linemates better. All at 21 years old with the world ahead of him.
      If his points are just from who he's playing with, why wasn't the points there last year? He was put on that line half way through LAST season.
      Your hockey IQ is low, you should probably stick to football or basketball. Easier to process the game for people like you

      If you knew kings hockey you would know the top lines point production spiked when byfield joined it last season. His grit created so much more for kopitar and kempe. He just wasn’t getting on the sheet with them.

      At this point, regardless of the player, if they can't score a consistent amount of goals from the plays Byfield is making, they probably shouldn't be in the league.

    Dude… what the f …. Well, first of all I gotta say this…. Why do these online “reporters” “journalists” or whatever the hell they call themselves try to move their eyelashes as fast as their lips are moving and act like they r having some convulsions or someone is holding the camera on them and at the same time going through climax, and just spraying it allllll over their lips and eyes?? Dude… calm down, why u panicking??….
    Back to Byfield.. who r u? Where the hell r u from? Seems like when u kept on saying “people thought he is a bust,” “people thought this,” “people thought that,” my son, at least in LA and around it, things were calm, quiet and everything was going by plan.. Byfield is here today because Kings wanted him here today… if they wanted him here yesterday; he would have been here yesterday as well with at least 40-60 points, with some responsibilities given. People forget that Kings have one of the best; if not the best farm systems in the NHL; and there is always 2-3 new young star being added to the roster from their farm team.. since Kopitar was a rookie; there has been at least 8-10 really solid player from the farm system that could have made a difference on any contender; or could have been a star on a lottery team…. By the time of their contract expiration; when they were due big money raise, but Kings can get an asset, as well as bring up of their own assets and not lose productivity, they always have done THAT. Let’s not forget that the Kings almost always are under the salary cap just because of that reason.
    So for u to say Byfield is “Finally” showing why he is selected that high and that people talked that he might be a bust, just wipe your lips bro..

    Must be listenig to Locked On. Those clowns have too much going on and can't give a good take on any team. They always want Stutzle over QB. Sorry, but I'll take the Kings as a whole over that joke of a roster in Ottawa.

    I think the term “bust” has as much to do about the draft spot used to take him as it does his results.
    Many have mentioned his age, his being a long term project etc. The bust is that the Kings wasted. 2nd overall pic on him when there were better options. 2nd overall should be NHL ready. No other team wouldve taken him at the 2 spot.

    Even if QB turns out to be a Adam Oates 2.0 and produces points per game. Kings made the right pick. Stutzle thrives because of the Sens lineup which gets more prime minutes, but still are not a playoff team in my opinion. QB is now learning how to play other than being a pivot is something to behold.
