The most possible answer with all those conditions she has(a house, money to survive, a robot) right there is... This professor was genius. So genius that she able to reverse-aging herself. Probably she was like 20s young adult girl back when she still making this robot girl. Probably she made Nano as her assistant but with some silly features too😅. But then she invent something that turn her to be a toddler girl. And her mentality too, like a toddler😅 And from this point, she can't turn back her age and body to be normal. Toddler brain n mentality. She stuck there. Soo.. Kinda an immortality 😅
Hakase being an adult before the events of Nichijou makes sense (despite that we're talking about a comedy anime). There's two things to consider: 1. How a child create so many inventions at their age? 2. How a kid and a robot are alone in a house? So Hakase could be an adult that goes crazy about some matters and made herself into a child, and no one outside of the house knows about it.
