I FEEL THE EXACT SAME WAY!!!! I'm pre-med, and I cant think of the last time I didn't cry over Organic Chem. Being Pre-med is such a challenging path to take, but the fact you're taking it just shows that your willing to do the hard stuff. Later on in life you're gonna look back on this vlog and be happy with the choices you made. YOU GOT THIS IZZY!!!! i'm rooting for you :)

Even if you decide you do not want to be a doctor, your current studies are still great for going into other areas like pharmacy, research, or other areas in science and healthcare! All you can do is your best whether that be in medical school or somewhere else equally as great! Life is a journey and will work itself out :)

Hang in there. Pre-med is meant to be hard, if it was easy everyone would do it. Once you get that acceptance letter, it is the best feeling. This road is not easy but one day someone will come to you for medical advice and you'll be able to help them. It is challenging, but I think the pros always outweigh the cons.

    • @jacob7270

I think it depends. Psych pre-med isn't that hard compared to engineering/STEM pre-med. It's totally dependent on how hard you choose to push yourself.

Just the fact that youre in hawaii make all ideas or plans easier and better but try connecting w the island itself and at the same time re align your focus. I know its hard to balance fun life and school while your at the best island in the world but you got this, you have a good support team behind you and it should be alright.

Hey Izzy - I’m a fourth year med student in NYC - you’re definitely right about being a product of your environment (it’s easy to feel like you should be stressed when everyone else around you is too!)
Many of the commenters are right... it doesn’t really change in medical school or into residency. In a lot of ways it becomes progressively more challenging. That said, you’re ahead of the curve in a lot of ways and you’re only able to handle those stresses if you figure out a good work life balance.
Medicine is a lot of work, but the impact you can have on people’s lives makes it all worth it.
If you’re looking for a mentor feel free to reach out and we can figure something out!

Research shows that peers matter a lot and they help u excel. In Columbia you don't feel the stress so much because everyone is working hard. Here in Hawaii you don't have the same motivation. You need the right infrastructure-libraries, study groups, etc to keep yourself disciplined.
Don't let one semester in Hawaii make you lose sight of your life goals.

  • @joyjoy9889

Just wanted to comment as I'm someone who faced the exact same dilemma as you while I was a premed student! I think it's definitely normal to think about how other career options may be less stress than medicine but looking at the big picture, pharmacy school/neuroscientist/Ph.D students also go through an extreme amount of stress- the way I look at it is if you're already going through the hard route why not put in a little more effort to achieve a little bigger goal? For me, even though pharm school was more appealing in undergrad than medicine, the prospects of obtaining a job is so much worse (job saturation).
And I am an avid watcher of your vlogs so I know that you are someone who is super personable, will shine at interviews, and have unique qualities that not a lot of neurotic premeds have so I think you have more than enough shot at getting into med school! Just wanted to give my 2 cents as someone who's been in your exact shoes and now I'm accepted into med school and so glad I stuck with my original plan! Never doubt yourself! You are more than enough :)

I feel like everyone is saying that you should keep pushing and not get “distracted” but tbh there is nothing wrong with taking breaks, enjoying the beach and friends. You’re still so young and having fun is important. I also think your discipline is amazing & you’re such a hard worker. I think the question isn’t whether you can continue pre-med but rather do you really want to? I think you know the answer to that.
I was an ex-physics major for a year and a half and although I loved physics, it just wasn’t for me and everyday I felt worse and worse about myself. I’ve switched over to a double major in English & Linguistics and I love learning so much more now & I’m pursuing my passion and exercising my skills in writing, reading, and communicating.

I feel you girl! I know it's cliche, but my advice would be to go into a career that you love. Do you love the idea of being a doctor? Is this what you are truly passionate about? If so, you are absolutely intelligent and hard-working enough to succeed. If you don't feel like you love it, please try to find something that you do love. Life is too short to be stuck in a career that you despise. I am an occupational therapist and even making it through my program was excruciating. I can't even count the amount of days I spent crying and breaking down over the stress and pressure. If it's not something you really want to do, it isn't going to be worth it. I guess my point is not whether you CAN do it (you can) but whether it's really where your heart is at. Spend some time reflecting and don't feel pressured to make a decision. Sending love to you ❤

Izzy, I was premed for three years throughout college and I did an internship in the hospital and decided I wanted to be a nurse! You can do SO much with your knowledge and honestly, the stress isnt worth it and it's only going to get worse from here. Focus on the little baby steps to get there. I am so much happier and way more interested in my studies. I'm currently working full time as a phlebotomist and starting an accelerated nursing program next year. Just breathe, you're young, you will figure it out! Your mental health isnt worth the stress of rigorous courses.

Hang in there! You’re an amazing student, you can to do anything you set your mind to it. I never had organic chem in college, but for what I’ve heard it’s hard, but what I do know is that most science classes seem more difficult at the beginning than they do later, bc it takes some time to understand the process for solving each type of problem - and don’t forget you changed majors so you haven’t been doing this type of exercises since freshman. Don’t be so hard on yourself!! I hope you are doing better with physics too. We’ll be rooting for you no matter which path you choose!! Sending hugs your way!

I just wanted to pop in and add my 2 cents. I’m an M1 in medical school and medical school is not for the weak at all. I spend a lot of time crying lol. Make sure that you really want to be a doctor because med school will make you question your abilities. That being said it’s so rewarding to put in the work and see results. I’ve learned so much already it’s kind of mind boggling.

I was in the EXACT same boat as you in undergrad (neuro major/formerly premed, now studying data science at harvard). it’s obviously easier to say in retrospect, but don’t let yourself get too worked up. you are clearly motivated, hardworking, and intelligent. give yourself time to figure it out and know that you will follow through on whatever you choose. maybe that will still be med school or maybe it won’t, but just know that you wield as much power as you choose to in the situation.

Also, i think in the United States you have these obligation on being super productive, always doing something, and maybe what you need is to take a day off, free your mind a little bit. No matter what anyone tells you, you can do it! Also, Reddit is a the best first-hand resource on what you can do and how to plan for the future. I would say start planning now if you are freshmen, maybe before the first semester or after. And schedule in volunteering and researching, any anyother activies for the whole 4 years. Also, no one ever told me this, but when you take general classes (Gen. Org/Chem; Bio; Physics), really try to understand it. Because the better you understand everything earlier, the easier the MCAT will be! I know some people will be like just get a B or just pass the class. But honestly, if you can really understand everything, your MCAT score will be so much better! Anyway, that is my advice.

Of course that doesn’t mean becoming a doctor or it’s a failure. But, I mean that you should take things a day at a time and with time you’ll realize and find a concrete answer as to the route you want to take that’ll ultimately lead to happiness and joy. Be happy and enjoy the process, it makes all the success that will come soon worth it! Hope you’re in a better state of mind now 💜

Honestly I've been feeling like that lately, especially during the pandemic where I'm not around that atmosphere of always studying and talking about med school. I've been reconsidering, I'm currently in my gap year doing the master's program at my school, and thinking if it's worth the stress and the years to reach an end goal. Before, I always thought of it as continuing my education instead of going into the field. But now I look at how many years of studying and stressful nights it's going to be and if I'll be happy. At the end, it's your choice, and what you think will make you happy. I think I fell in love with research more than anything, so maybe PhD is the right choice for me. But honestly, PhD is stressful and just as long as an MD, so it's what makes you happy in the end as well as being happy throughout the journey, because that's important too. We're all young and have time to figure it out, as you said it's definitely something that we can't decide because it's a tough decision to make early on. Do what you love and the rest will follow! Love watching your vlogs, and whatever you decide, you will do great.

11:20 Definitely the right approach! Shoot for the moon without necessarily picking a specific direction :) all the world can ask of you is that you do your best each and every day whatever that may be. And if you keep trying your best other people will see that and you'll undoubtedly pick up opportunities along the way because of it that will eventually lead you to where you're meant to be! Hi Izzy! I've never been a since student before and did relatively little of it during my pre-university education, but last year I decided to switch my program to comp sci and it is also super hard for me and I feel overwhelmed by it a lot too. Can't give you much advice but just wanted to let you know I feel the same way! :) I think with science it takes more time to let the information soak down, and even though it is so much harder & more stressful than my previous degree (Economics), I'm learning much more and I'm glad of it. There are days when I feel more confident in my choice and days when I doubt if it is possible for me to finish with this degree, but I think looking back I would be more proud of myself if I stick through it. Good luck with your studies no matter what your choice is! xx

Give yourself some grace, just try your best, and listen to your body when it's giving you signs of when to stop and your limits! You have to take it one semester at a time, one class at a time. I graduated in 5 years due to a switch my in major and it felt like I would never graduate, but it’s coming :)
And also, you’re pre-med degree will open up tons of doors for you even if you don’t decide to do the doctor route!

i really respect American pre-med students, the commitment and dedication is key for a career in medicine. Also keep going trust me have a previous degree makes med school feel much more attainable and you'll feel more prepared. As a UK med student myself i can relate. in the UK you can just start med school after high school at the age of 18, but i decided against that. Medicine is a career for life and you really need to be sure so having a 'pre-med' degree really helps you have many options. Don't give up!

I don’t mean to be a downer, and I’m sure u know this already, but it’s not worth going through this route if u know u will end up with mostly Bs and a few Cs in those core classes (if grades are an issue, if not then ignore this). That will just make your application process even more stressful then what u are feeling now! If you are absolute dream is to be a doctor then I say move somewhere where u won’t be distracted and focus getting those As in those hard classes. But if it’s not your absolute dream then u need to sit down and think about what other career options will work for u. Good luck and I know it’s a tough time but u got this !

I am in the second year of medical school in Japan.
I'm thinking exactly the same thing.I sometimes wonder why I'm taking such a tough road despite the fact that I like things that are fun and relax. But every time I worry about this, I remember why I aspired to medicine and try to do my best with things that are in front of my eyes. If I have two things I want, I'll try to grab both. It may be painful now, but I will be proud of my hard work one day, when I look back on it.
Watching your video made me feel a little better, thinking that I wasn't the only one worried about this. Thank you for speaking honestly.
    Let's do our best together!

you should think about economics again if science isn't really your thing! You can do so much with econ and there's so much less stress. you could go to law school, grad school, do investment banking, wealth management etc if that is something that also interests you

Take it one day at a time.. dont be too hard on yourself.. set a fixed schedule for studying and stick to it no matter how appealing going to the beach is..

I think your idea of taking things at a time is a good idea. Just give yourself a little bit of time and see where you then feel like you want to go. I mean this is a period of time in which everything is different for everyone, but maybe you can use it as a chance to get to know yourself a little bit better and find out what you want 🧡

19 year old pharmD major here! I can totally relate to you lol. I just want to say that you got this (I'm talking to myself here too)! It gets really hard and this semester has really made me feel like I don't deserve to be in my program. But what's kind of helping me is taking breaks and working with my classmates through face time. Just keep your head up, you're almost there!😊🦋☁️🌱✨

Hi Izzy, I'm not pre-med but I'm currently in nursing school! I also struggled between deciding between med school and other healthcare careers. I would definitely advise you to go with your gut and try to figure out what you value in a career long-term. For me, I wanted a career that would give me the freedom to switch specialties and pursue advanced degrees, such as become an NP or CRNA. I also really prioritize work-life balance, and I knew in my gut that I wasn't passionate enough about becoming a physician to make it through 8+ years of schooling and training. With that said, any career path will involve a lot of stress and self-doubt, which is completely normal and does not invalidate your worth or future success in any way! I know you'll be successful whichever path you choose

Hi Izzy! Been following your vlogs since 2018. You’re a hardworking and smart student. I think you’d be a great candidate for med school. But what could help you now, is to ask yourself: what do you really want to do with your life? Do you love what you do as a premed student? Do you feel that becoming a doctor is what you might be called to pursue?
Also, just my two cents, maybe going to the beach and friends is distracting you from focusing on your studies. Nothing wrong w/ taking a break, but it’d help to schedule your activities, like maybe go out and have fun on weekends, but weekdays are dedicated to school grind. If you go out everyday, it might eat up your time, and wont have enough left to study. Just work on balancing. :) You can do it. Nothing worth having ever comes easy. Dont give uppp.
