I believe most fabrics works good on corset, fabrics like lace, crepe, duchess, mikado, poly, cotton, silk etc it all depends on what design you intend creating.
Well, I will suggest you get a smaller plastic boning or you can carefully use a lighter to melt it by the side. But I will strictly advice you get a smaller plastic boning and keep this bigger one for another project.

What is the difference between rigilene and plastic boning?
The Rigilene boning is the sewable one while the plastic boning is not sewable , you only pipe it inside.
