Visiting Papillon’s Devil’s island - French Guiana 2018

- Papillon’s world famous Devil’s island at ”Îles du Salut” - in French Guiana (South America). Known in English as the Salvation Islands, these little Islands were anything but ”salvation” for the prisoners sent here from the French mainland by Emperor Napoleon III and the subsequent French governments. This was the French smaller version of other more famous death camps. From 1852 to 1947, some 80,000 prisoners died from disease, inhumane conditions and the guillotine on these sad isles. So much for égalité, liberté and fraternité.
The three tiny former prison islands consist of Île du Diable, Île Royale and Île St Joseph and thanks to shark infested waters they were considered escape proof and extra appropriate for political prisoners: including the French/Jewish Alfred Dreyfus - wrongly convicted of treason in 1894.
The most famous prisoner though was Henry Charrière, who became known for his epic tale of nine remarkable escapes from French Guiana’s infamous prison camps. Nicknamed Papillon (Butterfly) for a tattoo on his chest, Charrière claims that after being wrongly convicted of murder he escaped from Îles du Salut by floating toward the mainland on a sack full of coconuts and cut his way through harsh malarial jungles to flee towards freedom eastward. Papillon is portrayed by Steve McQueen in a 1973 Hollywood version of his life also starring a young Dustin Hoffman in thick glasses
The warning sign "Do not cut ant trees back" shows you how much the french want this to disappear! Usually old historical prisons like Alcatraz and the one in Anglesey UK are kept as monuments to our progress.
Charlie Hunnam brought me here. Something crazy about looking in each cell and the realization that many lives and minds were tortured in their own silence on that very ground. I can only imagine how it must have felt to stand on that ground.
Anyone wishing to go to devil's island after the covid... Give me a call... And although devil's island is out of bounds... Let's find a way on the island...I'm desperate to experience living on the island and sitting on the Captain's bench... An unbelievable experience and the closest I got to was British Guyana in 1978
Papillon is one my fav films .
If You can Read the books Papillon and banco (second part) the movies are 5% of the history
I am obsessed with going there. Thank you so much for sharing
me too man i wanna go and see that island one day
it’s amazing to me that i’m 41 and still discovering these fascinating places on this small earth we share. Thank you for this video. it’s the best i’ve seen about the island.
In 2001 in my early 20s I lived in French Guiana and went to devils and royal island we spent the night and lit huge fire sticks and drunk rum n snorted coke all night and ran around the jail cells it was super spooky n next day we were all glad to get boat back to kourou I got smashed by mosquitos and spewed guts up on way home but great adventure
Phil by Adventures: How did you remember any of this! Hallucinating maybe?
Please come off the drugs
so basically you were off your head and didn't truly experience anything there. You might as well have been in a coal shed
Calm down guys wow this was over twenty years ago and I lived in kourou for nearly a year had plenty of time to see and experience the amazing country
Sounds like a good time tbf 😂👍🏼
I lived on devil's island for 6 MTHS in 1974 and again in 1980 for a year. After the movie I left, no more privacy and the French legionaires wouldn't allow it. I'm just glad I was able to experience it like pappy did
I was working on this island as and electrician in 1985.The french foreign legion were there also. They have very good fish.
As an electrician? Realy? this island has electricity? And whats your opinion.
All these graves for guards, while prisoners would be fed to the sharks. As if they weren't people in life
Thank you so so much for shooted this video. Not easy to reached That far . I cried for Henri Charriere.
Did you watch the Papillon movie?? It came in 2018, am so obsessed with it. Would love to see this island in real life😌😳
The original from 1973 I think it was is just as good, with Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman
Not a patch on the original movie!
You owe it to yourself to READ the book (or listen to the audiobook). While the movies were great in their own sense, the book version, the “real” version (if it is real), is much better.
The original movie is the best!!
Great video Martin, must have to see dark cell when papillon said" how I look"
Excellent video! Cheers for going to all the trouble of making it. Greatly appreciated. French records (and an awful lot of critics) though, claim HenrI Charrière was never on Devils Island, although he was on I'ile St Joseph, and that he gathered other prisoners stories and claimed them for himself. Charles Brunier at the age of 104, claimed that he was the inspiration for 'Papillon' and circumstantial evidence seemed to support his claim.
thanks for this basic known information.
French Alcatraz basically
Sadly all this was true. Those ruins exude inhumanity. Very impressive!
@PJB Just imagine if they were still Penal Colonies
From what I've read the 80.000 prisoners were sent to the Guyana penal colony as a whole, not just these 3 islands. Still, great video! :)
Great video barly last night i watch the movie and sad but its a great movie
You should read the book. Its way better than seeing these movies.
Book is amazing
@@sashikumarr007 one of my favourites book. Read the follow up Banco to
The best book is : guillotina seca (dry guillotine) with Rene Benoit is more real. I have read both book, but I prefer the first one
Reminds me of the words from Kate Wolf's song Early Morning Melody,
"Reminding me that even prison walls
Turn to dust and fall
Before the open sky"
What a fanatstic travel cahnnel theme - visiting famous historical places that are impossible for me to ever see. I love it. It would also be fascinating to see just how difficult it was for you to charter a trip to get there, the process of finding someone willing to take you out there would be interesting to see too. Thanks for sharing!
Great video! Thank you! 👏👏👏
I can feel the extreme humidity
I'm here coz papillon 😍
Dispite it's horrible past, this would be a perfect location for Ghosthunters. The amount of lost and tormented souls would astounding. It would take nerves of steel to stay though nights of darkness.
In early 2001 we stayed night on devils island all we had were huge fire sticks and it's super spooky mind you we were drinking rum n snorting loads of coke but between the insects and noises was glad to leave next day lol
@@Philbie232 that actually sounds amazing
Forget about ghosts and good luck with snakes and spiders 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
Like that of the nature in the movie, it is breathtaking. So colorful.
Sailed from the Cape Verde Islands to devil's island in 1974. Stayed for 6 MTHS in a Rock Cabin. The 3 French legionaires who stayed on the main island never visited me but I occasionally motored over for beer. All that is gone now, very regulated and must have guide and it's crowded with noise and lights. Can't stay in cabin anymore. I'm glad I went before it was commercialized, before the movie ruined the serenity.
This is pretty cool. Thanks for taking us there
Veramente complimenti per il video e grazie.
Best short video lve seen in yrs Cheers
Thank you man.love you pyapi as always

Enjoyed your video. We were supposed to visit there yesterday, but the seas were too rough to land. Maybe someday we will make it.
why did movie papillon added jumping of the cliff. when there is no really cliff on the devil island?
The cliff escaped
Thank you so much, you are very brave!.I love the book and it's incredible to see the islands. Rip and 🙏 to all whose lives ended there
Thank you!
Thanks for sharing 👍🏽🦋
very interesting to see, thanks for that
Nice video 👍🏾
i really don't understand keeping people in cells without helping them get back into society with something like rehab. It's a waste of time and the publics' money.
What gets me when the so called criminals died there were not even given Christian graves to rest in .there were just thrown away into the sea to be eaten by sharks .
Watch me not care.
Don’t knock the French penal system. They were dealing with the scum of the earth from France. The effluent were sent there to be forgotten. At the end of days, feeding to sharks was very eco efficient. Way ahead of its time. Papillon was an excellent work of fiction. Enjoyable, never the less. If it were true and he was a pimp and, pimp killer, he rid France of one vile criminal. France rid itself of him. Escaped 8 times? No evidence can be found of this.
@@paulleigh7792 you okay?
I believe crime should be punished, the offender rehabilitated if possible. When an inmate dies by execution or natural causes, his/her sentence HAS BEEN SERVED. He's square with the house. No disrespect to remains should be tolerated in the slightest .It says way more about the person being disrespectful than it does about the former tenant of the HUMAN remains.
Devil's Island is a good place for wildlife and nature photography including Île Saint Joseph
🙏 thank you sir 🙏
Is the island still open to visit or it has been closed?
Does anyone know if Papillon ever went back to Lali and the tribe?
I would LOVE to go see that place ever since i saw the movie
Steve McQueen nailed
It!
Nice video
That movie is awesome
You can only get there by boat?
5:42 I wonder what those ants are called?
Welcome home....
My Lovely French Guiana..🥰😘🥥🦎🦋🐛🌺
ESPECTACULAR ESPERO VISITAR ESTE LUGAR ANTES DE MIRIR
Antes de dormir yo me tomo un tesesito de manzanilla
Good video, thank you
Read papillon man . Terrific read .
christopher james I just finished reading it this morning. I want to go visit these islands lol
Plenty of ghosts there!
What is the title of the music score..? Great video, Papillion must have gone through hell.
Depessingly impressive
That can't be the island. Where's the super high cliff that Papillion jumped off with the coconut bag???
There is no cliff ! I was there with my sailboat in November 1987 and checked everyting out.
Actually he didn't mention as such "super high cliff". They used (Charriere and Sylvain), two almost identical rafts with several sacks tied containing food and water. Charriere chained himself to the raft. There are several rocks in this island but not the kind of cliff you might of thought. Having said that, Papillon was an absolute liar and he stole plenty of stories from other convicts. He even admitted that a great deal of stories and events featured in his autobiography were not true. He took full advantage of those prisoners, most of them already dead when Charriere published his book.
@@mlgl9728 that's true. The real story is the book "dry guillotine" (recomend to red ) with Rene Benoit. Henry charriere is a liar. I red both book.
@@GilbertoHernandez-db3vb absolutely, terrific book. Loved it. Don't get me wrong, Papillon is an excellent book but as soon as you realize it's content has blatantly been stolen from someone everything goes down the drain. He took full advantage of those convicts lol even the French Admin. made it clear that he wasn't serving time as a convict in certain prisons/islands in which he claimed he did. What a joke.
Papillon is my fav book
It is l'Ile Royale. Devils island is forbiden to enter, also dangerous because of its sharp shores.
You should've made a proper vlog with proper video coverage.with all the efforts to get there!!!!
De vijand is dichterbij dan je denkt, wel dan laat ie aan het licht komen, geven hem hel op aarde
That would creep me out.
Why were u whispering?
no one is allowed to enter thats why
SanPvP but who else is there and who’s gonna hear him?
Where three is life there is hope
Is this island now completely inhabited ?
yes, it's actually restricted to the public
( Leave your comment in English )
The greatest real adventure story ever read. How I wish to visit these French Islands ! The endurance was just great tbh
What do ye say guys ?
Like the Kenyan armband. 👌
Someone should clean up this place and have tours through here so we can learn something. Initiative is needed.
without the effects would have been better
Dude why are you whispering? Theres no one there.
Hemskt... 🦋✌️❤️🇫🇴
I would enjoy visiting there
Same
why didn't you point out that henry charriere was french / christian ?
too bad you didn't/couldn't use the jerry goldsmith theme
Papillon could escape now let's free the ants!
Why is he whispering?
Very sad. Life is the same in the island of Trinidad.Millions of skeletons beneath. US Soldiers missing in action and unaccounted for also US/WORLD CITIZENS AS 1710 TREATY/SCHINDLERS LIST AND DESCENDANTS OF SCHINDLERS LIST.
Do u know papillion movie is based on real story
But the real stories didn't feature Papillon, at least the vast majority events described in his autobiography. He actually stole stories from other convicts. Renee Belbenoit was one of them (Dry Guillotine was written by Belbenoit himself). Charriere took full advantage of those prisoners' stories, most of them already dead when he published "Papillon". He later admitted that most of the stories in his book were not even real.
My dad visited there
I watched the movie then came here
Läs böckerna
✌️🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋😇👍❤️🇫🇴
Saint Joseph Island no devil Island show the reclusion cell devil Island was for political prisoners
Dan mogen alle sloten nu ontketend worden want ze vallen jullie toch daar al aan, aan de franse kant
מפחיד
Monstrous and pointless Cruelty.
@BennO4 Yeah, and some of them wore guard's uniforms.
Henri Charrière was a fake...the real Papillon was Rene Belbenoit who lived in Brasil after the fantastic scape.
Please don't call him fake this word do not suit for him.we loved him just unconditionally.rene may be more stronger than him fake word don't suit.thank you for introducing Rene for me.I will go through him
Yeah! Henry charriere is a real liar. He stole history to Rene Benoit. I red both book. "Papillon "fake book"👍
Papillon 🦋 is 🦋 free
Megadeth brought me here, I’m a man of culture.
Denk erom David van de stam van David heeft dit ook moetten doen! Het onthoofden van de vijand, met al die koeterwals troep praat liefde met liefde overwinnen voor geld zit jij daar als film maker,
Prison should be a horrible place to go to! We need to make criminals afraid to do crimes! The punishment should fit the crime! As the warden summed it up for the new arrivals " Make the best of what we offer here, and you will suffer less than you deserve!"
Yeah, lets kill em all
Make america great again!!
Build a Wall!!
@@FernandaTorresss stupid comments!
@@jry.....why.1605 And that’s why several of these so called “First World Countries” have increasing illiteracy rates and some or the most overcrowded and filthiest prisons🤦🏿🤦🏿🤦🏿🤦🏿
Papillon Porky Pie!

Nice Video....Dialogue could have been better jeeez your gonna visit a place like this be prepared to speak...
Papillon never went to the islands
He stayed in cayenne
.
13may24 tks
An inditement on the barbarity of the French government who as recently as WW1 refused to provide christian burials for prisoners who instead were thrown to the sharks.
Wrong type of music
Shame on you France it maybe 2019 now. But this will be branded on your name forever.
Sigh. Name one country that never did horrifying sgut
@@Aemond2024 There are many countries, that did not kill thousands of people under a guise of a prison/penal colony. Especially not in recent past, and this "prison" was still active in 20th century, so yeah.
Sadly it won't ever be remembered because it is not discussed about in History class or anything.
pff it was closed in 1947 what about english in australia or usa in guantanamo?
THE GREEN HELL HERE AND VIETNAM INDOCHINA
WARS
A great movie yes...but Henri Charriere ( Papillon ) was never there. There are no official records of him ever being there. Most of the book was fiction
