I had a homebirth transfer at 10cm. Was struggling to push my son out. They gave me an epidural thinking I could push him out afterwards but I ended up in a cesarean. Anyways I got it at 10cm with my doula, midwives, husband, plus whatever hospital staff was there. I remember my doula coaching me through contractions while I had the epidural placed and telling me to "arch my back like a Halloween cat" and I was like I AM IM A HALLOWEEN CAT 🤣
My hospital told me u have to be at least 5cm to have an epidural and I've heard a lot of stories of women wanting one and the hospital saying no your not far enough along and then when they ask again they say that there to far along to get one. That scares me.
That's wild. I was writhing and almost screaming in pain with my last birth and they still gave me the epidural. They just waited until I could sit still and did it at 6cm. Induced labors are apparently much more painful than natural labors. But you should always be able to get the epidural whenever you'd like.
It slows down your progress that is why they give you pitocin. I had one almost right away because I was In a bad headspace (April 2020 covid birth). And then it slowed me down so much I actually decreased and it took me about 16 hours to get to 10. I had high blood pressure so they admitted me earlier than usual. My epidural also stopped working at the end and the pitocin made it feel like something was wrong because the pain was beyond.
I was trying not to push on the drive to the hospital. I showed up fully dilated with my babies head showing, but I was calm as a cucumber (it's a coping mechanism for me during disasters 😂). The nurse didn't think it was as urgent as it was because I was calm, smiling and polite, changed into a gown from my robe and husband's slippers (the only thing I could throw on before we left and my hubby drove 80mph to get there). She checked me, looked shocked when she felt his head, and said "Oh, we got a baby!" And in 5 seconds I was wheeled into delivery with a football team of doctors and he was out in 3 pushes. Lol As much as I can smile about it now with a good story, it was a miracle and I thank God and the amazing doctors and nurses for saving my babies life that night. ❤️
With my 3rd baby. Frank breech. I went into the hospital and I was already 10 cm dilated with a bulging water bag. One of the worst experiences of my life was sitting up on that operating table, trying to hold still while they did my spinal. Luckily I had an amazing team. A nurse stood in front of me so I could lean into her and she held my hand. Still to this day I'll never understand how they were able to do it so gracefully when I was having contractions on top of contractions. The amount of relief afterwards as I slowly felt my contractions start to feel like nothing, was amazing. 😂
I literally begged for a epidural and the nurse kept saying you’re not in labor yet . When I finally had to just be a jerk to the nurse she checked me and guess what .. omg you’re 9 cm it’s time to push … yup
When my mom had my eldest brother and sister, epidurals were not super common-at least where we lived idk about other places-and it was almost shameful to get one. When my other sister was born it was about 8 years later and my mom wanted an epidural. She kept asking “can I get the epidural now” and the nurses kept saying no and actually got a bit annoyed with her asking. And then my mom dilated very quickly and the nurses were like “oops it’s too late! No epidural for you!” My mom was furious. When I was born my mom coached my dad beforehand and was like “this is your ONE job today. GET ME that epidural I don’t care if the nurses end up hating you, I’m not doing this without one” and thankfully got her epidural lol
Personal experience with my second child: The pushing part doesn't even hurt. It's the part before that hurts so much. When I was fully dilated, it was just this feeling of constipation. You want it out, you push and push, bit it's some hard work. Without any pain, just... pressure? (Sorry for mistakes, english is my second language) PS: just discovered your shorts and watch them all. Thanks you! I still learn much with lots of fun 😄
Yeah, I've heard Transition (where you're going from about 7cm to 10cm) is the most painful time, where most people ask for medication of some kind. However, that period typically only lasts for about 20 minutes, and then it's time to push, and then your baby's there!
If I got to the stage of pushing without having the epidural I'd keep going without it. I've had 1) Emergency c-section with epidural, 2) VBAC with epidural. 3) Quite unplanned, a totally natural birth with no drugs at all. Pushing was x100 easier and more effective without the epidural and the old chestnut of "the harder you push, the less it hurts" worked for me.
With my last baby I tried to wait and go all natural so hard but it got to the point I couldn’t take the pain anymore and of course at that moment her head was coming out. Explains why I felt like a ring of fire was ripping through me 😭
My epidural stopped working when I was close to 10. Pitocin was on high. They gave me fentantyl to help me sit still as they tried to get it working again. It didn't. About 30 minutes after I was able to start pushing. The fentanyl although wearing off fairly quickly helped me get into the pushing zone but it was slow going. 2.5 hours of pushing and out came my very cone headed but healthy baby boy.
Idk what happened with my epidural but I got it and I could still feel everything after. It’s like it didn’t go in to the proper spot or something. 🤷🏻♀️
I decided for an epidural and the nurse ordered one but said it would take a while for them to come. I felt the urge to push and they told me I wouldn’t be able to get one because it was too late. When the anesthesiologist walked in I knew if he saw me doing a push he’d walk out so I swear I collected myself and what feels like completely paused my labor and prayed I wouldn’t get a contraction in front of him. He did the procedure in like two mins. He said it would take half an hour but I was already numb in like 5 mins 😅
Ohhh that's about the time I bust the hospital doors down. all natural 2 times. I be ready to get it done shower & get home. I don't like l&d in my town
I remember watching one of those shows that document people having babies and a woman asked if she could have an epidural and some nurse or whoever the medical professional in the room was said it was too late to do that because “it could make the baby sleepy.” No clue what that even means.
My 2nd son they told me I was too far along for an epidural.....he want born for 6 more hours I could have had it .....never went back to that hospital
I was in labor for 45 minutes .....TOTAL.. in my first and only birth. And when I started screaming about my epidural the nurse said "if we were to roll you over to give you the epidural you would essentially be sitting on your babies head because... she's coming. NOW
Yeah got to the hospital and they took me in and put me in the bed and i said “ i need an epidural” and they said its too late… and is said “whaaattt nooo!!!” And they said “do you want to feel her head?” Yeah had her in about 7 min. She came flying out 🤦🏽♀️
I jumped from 2cm to 7cm Within 20 Minutes and since it was in the middle Of the night the on call anesthesiologist had to drive in and by the time he got there my contractions were so painful. I screamed and cried, that damn ring of fire is no Joke. I wish I had that epidural
Not downing anyone because it’s been a long time since I had kids. however, are they educating more on how placing epidurals with someone who has scoliosis is huge on it working or not?
Had an epidural and I kept telling them it wasn't working. Well Dr comes in decided that I should push from 3 to 10 because I had an epidural and I would never know that it hurt. I kept telling her that it wasn't working, oh and it was a dry birth because my water broke the day before but she was to busy to come check me,because she was leaving for Fiji for vacation. Finally got the baby out and I set up and the epidural was still blocked and had never even started because they forgot to flip the lock clip. Baby also spent 3 weeks in nicu because the Dr didn't have time to deliver her after the water broke.
It was instant for me....🤣🤣 & With my son I had A WHOLE LOT & SHOOK FOR LIKE 3 HRS AFTER HE WAS BORN.. My Mother in law had to help me hold him while breastfeeding him..
They told me every time it was too late. 5 hours with the first, 2 hours with the second and 49 minutes with the third labours. My middle child did have one after being labour 36 hours.
I wish I hadn't gotten one with my latest baby. I was 9cm dilated and could have handled getting to 10cm. I think the full natural birthing experience would have been tolerable
Yes it is I was in the process of getting one and my daughter's head popped out. 45 minutes from the time my Dr broke my water. She was my 4th baby. 9 hours and 16 minutes lanor between all 4 kids
My 3rd did that!! I went from 5cm immediately before the epidural to baby’s head hitting the table after the contraction I had during the placement of the epidural. I laid back and pushed once and baby was out.
I asked for an epidural when I was in labor and they said nope you're too far! I was in labor for 25 hours and I was able to hold perfectly still for the epidural for the emergency csection I ended up having but apparently I just couldn't have one before I started even pushing?
I was always told 6cm or 7cm was too late. I came in and once they checked me they said if i wanted one it was now or literally never she came back in to check me before he came and said i had dilated to 6 or 7cm (i dont remember) and i couldnt get one.
Some places will let you use the gas if you choose to use that method for pain control but having a kid naturally is wonderful and you can actually feel your legs afterwards which is so much better I've had epidurals and I've had natural birth and it's so much better with natural
Is it ever too soon to have an epidural? I feel like I got one too soon because once I got it my contractions slowed down and I never made any progress after that. After like 2 hours of having my epidural my nurse came to check how much I was dilated and she accidentally broke my water. That still didn’t cause my contractions to increase and I think my baby was sleep, I ended up in an emergency c-section which traumatized me. But I still think about it to this day like I wonder if I hadn’t have gotten the epidural or waited longer could I have had a natural birth

Idk why the halloween cat part made me laugh like I did but I love that😂😂😭 congrats on having your baby too💕

The anesthesiologist walked in when my sons head dropped down into my vagina🤣 that's definitely too late for an epidural lol

Idk what the woman gave me but I got epidural at 9cm and that thing hit instantly. I had instant relief. So amazing
My mom never got any medication for her birth bc she was to afraid of needles (gave birth 3 times w no medication)
What a champ 💪🏻💪🏻
My 2nd son they told me I was too far along for an epidural.....he want born for 6 more hours I could have had it .....never went back to that hospital

I had 2 epidurals. Neither one worked. Dr never told me why. Could you?
Same thing happened to me!
Same
Woah I feel like this is something NEVER talked about. Why????
Same happened with my mom!
It was instant for me....🤣🤣 & With my son I had A WHOLE LOT & SHOOK FOR LIKE 3 HRS AFTER HE WAS BORN.. My Mother in law had to help me hold him while breastfeeding him..

Whooooooa!! Your baby was like nope...here I am! Congrats xo
Wow my mom was in labour for almost a full day with both me and my sister :P
My 3rd did that!! I went from 5cm immediately before the epidural to baby’s head hitting the table after the contraction I had during the placement of the epidural. I laid back and pushed once and baby was out.
I asked for an epidural when I was in labor and they said nope you're too far! I was in labor for 25 hours and I was able to hold perfectly still for the epidural for the emergency csection I ended up having but apparently I just couldn't have one before I started even pushing?
I got one when I got to the hospital and was 9.5 dilated
I was 9cm with my first (was in labor for 5 days and I gave in) 5cm with my second and my third.
I was always told 6cm or 7cm was too late. I came in and once they checked me they said if i wanted one it was now or literally never she came back in to check me before he came and said i had dilated to 6 or 7cm (i dont remember) and i couldnt get one.
What about why they fail? Mine failed I felt everything. The contractions were slightly lighter but still hurt.
Mine failed twice, third kid I didn't even try.
This is part of why I chose not to get an epidural for any of my deliveries. I can't stay still. Pain makes me want to move around more. 😬
Some places will let you use the gas if you choose to use that method for pain control but having a kid naturally is wonderful and you can actually feel your legs afterwards which is so much better I've had epidurals and I've had natural birth and it's so much better with natural
I got one at 3cm haha
Ugh I’ve had patients squirming with a baby’s head popping out already, asking for an epidural!!
Hahah this was me.... but, I only have 1 child and I was only in labor 45 min total.
Water injections in back are good safer than a epidural. Takes 30 seconds.
Is it ever too soon to have an epidural? I feel like I got one too soon because once I got it my contractions slowed down and I never made any progress after that. After like 2 hours of having my epidural my nurse came to check how much I was dilated and she accidentally broke my water.
