Finally someone like me that treats music as an outlet of the subconscious mind. Play your soul in the moment. Very different from composed music, which works too but in the other direction. Composition = Music causing feeling / Improvisation = feelings causing music. You can compose great music while feeling nothing and doing maths and you can break all the rules and create once in a lifetime performance music by letting your soul play whatever it wants.
Dave, you are aspirational and inspirational in equal measures. I can only speak for myself, although I hope other viewers feel the same, but I would love to be able to play as well as you, even half as good would do me! Listening to your stuff also drives me to pick up the guitar even if it ends in disappointment in that I can't replicate what you've done. We all know how playing/learning the guitar can be a double-edged sword with both highs and lows but we stick to it - the dream never dies. To the king of improv, I salute you!
All very good Dave and I will take very close note of your advice and teaching but I am afraid their is one thing lacking that cannot be taught - your genius and improvisational skill. You can string an extended and coherent jam over a period of minutes that I have heard very few guitarists do over many decades of listening to bands. Hendrix, Clapton, Page and a few others had this talent but you stand out as the best of this era. Not only that but you are still improving ! Awesome does not do it justice or indeed stupendously brilliant. You are the man.
Minutes? He keeps going for 20 / 30 of 'em. Not easy to do and keep the listener interested..Improv wise it's knowing where the music wants to go, it will tell you.
you prolly dont care but does anyone know a trick to get back into an instagram account? I was stupid lost the account password. I would appreciate any assistance you can offer me
@Beckham Keagan Thanks for your reply. I found the site on google and I'm trying it out now. I see it takes a while so I will get back to you later with my results.
Dear Dave. When I discovered your channel ,you had 44000 followers, After just a few months you're up to more then 47000. In fact the copyright shit in someway pushed you to concentrate more on your own music and realise how we people love it. Your lessons were absolutely great but your playing is outstanding probably because of that deep honesty, true love and total dedication. Every time you play you fill up more then a huge bar and all your followers gathered together are a stadium. The main stream medias are so poor in there offer! Dave guys like you on internet are the future, the survival of human spirituality over the consumption society. Pity we can't just all join you one day for real. Take a rest our medicine and take care of yourself. We need you Mr Simpson !!!
I'm not kidding when I say this, if you released an EP or even a full length album with just these long improvised jams, i would buy that in a heartbeat. The amount of emotion you put into these jams is absolutely incredible. Thank you. Rock on Dave
Good fricken gravy!!!!Dave your intros and outros are getting addictive, beautiful licks and picks,Cheers mate hope you get out of your funk and have a great weekend.
This was a very special video for me because I always wanted to see your process for intro's and untitled's. Love how it's almost spiritual. Like you are guided in a certain direction and don't fight it, as you obviously know by now that it works for you. I've heard so many musicians ,from interviews or reading books, say that they feel they are just a vessel for the music and it's like it comes from a higher place. That may sound silly to some...but my best talent is probably writing songs on an acoustic guitar, and I often wonder where the melody, and lyrics come from. Like we snatch them from the air? But I really like how you follow the feelings you get when putting it all together. Another reason I love this video is because I'm about to buy a looper pedal.....and I remember you having a red boss one and now you have the Ditto. But I've seen a smaller Ditto....whats the difference. And I would like a looper with drums or a cheap pedal that can give me drums but is simple to use. Thank you so much for all you do with this channel, It means so much to all of us who watch you. Stay strong my friend. I've just ordered a "Good Gravy" t-shirt to get the word out, about the best guitarist on YT :)
I've never had a boss looper but they are awesome pedals. The only difference between the small ditto and the X2 is the X2 has the ability to half time things and send things in the reverse. The small one doesn't.Thank you very much. : )
That is one of the best tracks I have heard in a very very long time. I would actually buy that if you could make a cd with similar tracks. Where ever your head is at the moment, its pushing out some beautiful music. Thanks Dave.
Great video and very insightful to your process!!! Your fluency in knowing where to go on the guitar to get the notes and chords you want is amazing to me. I can learn things through repetition and memorization, but still haven't clicked into that ability to navigate the fretboard instinctively. Thanks for sharing so much with us, you're a great teacher!!!

Dave you’re too funny man, saying there’s really no thought to it. I totally get that you are an intuitive improvising musician. The ‘thinking’ that is behind the evolution of the ever many details that you designed into your kit set up that opens the way for you to Invent music is awesome. All that gooop said, your articulation in words of how you do what you do is absolutely wonderful. Thank You 🙏🏼
Hey Dave Thank you for your channel, your sound, your tone and for you being you. I find a lot of inspiration for my on playing, having a session with myself. All the best 🤟 just by listening to your playing I learned so much.
This is my bible now. I got a looper a few weeks ago, and your backing tracks even then motivated me to finally practice chord changes again. Guess how motivated I am now!
Dave you are an absolute legend, I am so glad I took an interest in John Frusciante’s playing style and found you on RUclips. You are the most genuine person and you have so much great content. You have inspired me like no other. Keep it up! Look forward to more to come. Craig - South Africa
It's fantastic watching you work through this. Very inspirational. It lets me know that it isn't (because of showing only a polished video in the end) just a quick easy process for others and a maddening process (at times) for only me. It's been a pleasure watching this. Edit: Originally commented just after instruction. Just finished the video. That outro... oh man... yeah... no words.
I work in a similar way. Only I have to record the drum pattern first to my DAW and then jam over it with chords and then play the solo. But the outcome is well below your quality. I have only recently learned to play solo really a lot and visualized the blues pentatonic for all keys over the entire fretboard. I am still working on the in-between notes and other fine stuff so it doesnt get to boring. But your advice and your playing is a step closer for me. Thank you.
Well done Dave... The video that I have been waiting for!! :-) Mind you, still waiting for the tutorial of some of those fast licks that you throw in from time to time ;-)
It was amazing. All your videos are pure inspiration for me. We can't hear John for now but thanks god we have you. Every day i'm waiting for your untitleds ,is like keep listening what john would play these days. And thank you very much for all the information about your pedalboard and singnal chain,it helps a lot . These days i'm so happy, i found an wh10 v1 at 50 € ( I'm from spain) and it sounds amazing. Now i just need your fingers and soul.
I use Gt1 and or rp360rp and Yes. I play atmospheric Blues. I make up a loop daily usually and practice over it expressing my emotions best I can ....That is how I've taught myself. Small channel. But I absolutely love this journey. Funny I am a 30 year drummer keyboard etc and rarely have drums in my stuff. Hahah. I tried to use the drums in RP 360xp but it won't allow loops. At same time. Haha. Nowhere near your talent man but God I love this journey. As I love this channel as well. I think we are pretty damn similar more than not. I'm more gilmour fan. You are JF fan. Both Guitar gods of emotions. Peace to you.
Hello again Dave sorry to bug with all the questions, I’m trying to get my ditto setup with my MG with my Dave Simpson inspired pedal board , I have the ditto plugged into the effects loop but I noticed you have something running both ways from the ditto am I missing something ? Very confused again 😢

Apart from everything Dave says here, one thing this video shows is you have to be a reasonably proficient rhythm player to be a good soloist. The advantage of a looper and laying down your own rhythm is you know when the chord changes are coming, you played 'em. Question Dave.. Do you find you play the next note the music wants, regardless of scales? Often you'll be playing within a scale, pentatonic maybe, but i often find i hit a note outside the scale, or even switching to a slightly different scale...sometimes i'll switch from minor pentatonic to the minor scale..or maybe into a more major sound..depending on what i'm playing over. If i hit a wrong note the "right" one is usually a fret above or below more often than not. I was told moons ago, learn the theory, or at least as much as you need, ( as i mainly play blues stuff i just use blues type chords a lot of the time anyway. Not always but mostly) and when you've learned it...forget it. In other words learn the theory but don't become a slave to it. I also find i use single notes, double stops and triads a lot of the time for soloing. How's it go for you, or are you even that aware exactly what you do..do? I'm not a lot of the time.
When running the Looper in the effects loop I'm still not sure how to run the cables. Is the Looper just simply plugged into the effects loop without the guitar being plugged into it like it is with the other pedals? Sorry for the dumb question I'm still learning.
Hi Dave !! Thanks for another brill video. Quick question... do you stop your drum machine on the Zoom G2.1U after recording the drum and guitar loop in the the looper? Or does it work another way. Many thanks. Josh Surridge
