  • North American P-51D flight from Copperstate Fly In at Casa Grande, AZ, to Stellar Airpark (P19), October 24, 2015, piloted by owner, Jeff Pino.
Jeff Pino, 61, the former president of helicopter maker Sikorsky and an avid general aviation pilot, was killed on Friday, February 5, 2016, in the crash of his P-51D “Big Beautiful Doll” in Maricopa, Arizona, about 35 miles south of Phoenix. Also lost in the crash was Jeff's longtime friend, Nick Tramontano, 72.
A former Army helicopter pilot who became president at Sikorsky in 2006 after a career that included 17 years at Bell Helicopter, Pino retired in 2012. He purchased the P-51 in early 2014, and in October of that year made a gear up landing after a mechanical problem with the airplane’s left main gear.
Most recently Pino had served as vice chairman for XTI Aircraft, a Denver company that is developing a VTOL craft called the TriFan 600. The company said it will move ahead with the project in spite of “this shocking loss.”
The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the cause of the crash.

I had the honor to have served with Jeff in 1978 when we were both lieutenants in 3/32 Armor in Friedberg, Germany. He was the Scout Platoon Leader and was quite a good poker player and could always make a person laugh. He was always first-rate and I was sad to learn yesterday that he is gone. RIP Jeff. My prayers to your family as well, Sir.

I didn't know there was more than one "Big Beautiful Doll". I was kind of surprised and curious if they have rebuilt the one which i have seen crashing with my own eyes in 2011 but unfortunately they didn't....

+ Scorpac I don't see any new updates for the wreckage of the Big Beautiful Doll crash at Duxford. It was registered to a German owner. The wreckage of the fatal BBD accident in Chandler, AZ has been sold to new owners for a rebuild.

I thought Big Beautiful Doll was lost at Oshkosh in 2011 after a Skyraider collided with it in mid air?

+ James Bottger "Big Beautiful Doll" was lost at Flying Legends at Duxford in 2011. Pilot Jeff Pino and passenger were killed flying in his P-51 "Big Beautiful Doll" in 2016 in Arizona. A third "Big Beautiful Doll" is a static display.

@@FiveCentsPlease Then what was the P-51 that collided with the Skyraider in Oshkosh? I believe it was also wearing the Big Beautiful Doll scheme...

@@jamesbottger5894 That was Commonwealth CA-18 Mk 22 #CACM-192-1517 painted as BBD in the collision at Duxford. She had just been sold to a new owner in Germany and all shined up before the accident. I haven't really heard what happed to the wreckage or there is a rebuild planned. The remains of Jeff Pino's BBD P-51 have been sold to an owner in CA for rebuild.
