Anyone notice Clare's reactions in the background when the popular girl is talking to Erin. The actress really left a lot of subtle hints to the characters sexuality throughout the show, great on re-watch, fantastic actress.

Oh yes, I've gradually noticed more hints about Clare's sexuality upon rewatching the show. One notable example is that while the other girls (and James!) are admiring of and attracted to Father Peter, Clare is the only one who isn't. She also wants Erin to get straight to the point before they're all distracted by him.
It also happened when everyone else is fawning over the hot priest and she’s like whatever, man!

I watched it on Netflix. When I got to the last episode, I went back and realized all the hints throughout the whole series. Very smart indeed.

I love how the girls and James show their love and support of Orla when they get up on the stage and danced with her, and, by the look on Sister Michael's face, she agrees. Such a Great Cast of Characters and so much fun to watch. PEACE to ALL!! ... and STAY SAFE and HEALTHY.
It's such an amazing fact that she was that way ordering fries, such a great character moment to put in. I luuved it, I actually also feel really awkward in stores and shit or with formal relationships though i'm kinda extroverted.
The Kamal scene was the scene that sold me on the show. It was 5 min into the episode and I was dying of laughter. Claire's difficulty in keeping the fast for the rest of the day was so hysterical. All she did was skip lunch. 🤣

This actress is brilliant. She combines high-brow intellect with great physical energy. I was in stitches with her drunk scene, the "maybe this is out there, but we could get jobs". The energy she adds to the show, they're all in trouble and her dad says "wait till I tell your mother" and she's in the background taking a breath in dread. LOL.
I just read some article about people shaming her for a stupid reason. There should be a law about body shamers: one has to post their own pic if they're going to shame someone else, especially an actress as efin brilliant as this young lady.

Was it really this easy for a teenage girl to out herself as a lesbian in the '90's in Northern Ireland? I would have thought that such a religious community back in those days would be much more prejudicial and judgmental?
I think there's a modern spin on it! But its nice to have something a bit more uplifting
In my experience, Irish Catholics are actually really good at ignoring what the Church says when it's inconvenient, lmao. While I'm not from the 90s, I had essentially no issues coming out to my very Catholic, very Irish family
It wasn’t that easy for Clare anyway, Erin’s reaction was very poor and typical for a young person back then. Thankfully after she was sorry the gang all wore rainbow pins after Clare had come out. You see them in the episode where James says ‘I’m a Derry girl!’
Realistically, it was more difficult for gay teens coming out in the 90s (especially for gay dudes) but I feel like Derry Girls just avoids some of those darker themes because it's a light comedy. That's just the style of the series, not an actual statement on reality.
Yeah, not a chance it would be this easy, but I think a few episodes based on Clare becoming alienated from her friends and family based on her sexuality might be a wee bit heavy for a BBC sitcom.
Orla just has my heart.
