Have many esp with wled and ws28xx in my house never used a "buffer" or level shifter. The ws28 can handle the 3.3 volt. Als the resistors. Never used them
Yup, I confirm that these were working without buffer too, but problems might get on longer distances between esp and first led. Some designed boards with esp32 for ws28xx even has one led which works as amplifier to the others
