- Jeff Galvin, CEO of American Gene Technologies, speaks with ABC7 WJLA’s Justin Hinton as AGT achieves an important milestone in the company’s history.
On May 19, the first participant of the Phase 1 clinical trial of AGT's HIV Cure Program was infused with the AGT103-T cell product, marking an inflection point in the company’s mission to find a functional cure for HIV. This is the first-in-human study for AGT103-T. The Phase 1 will evaluate the safety of the drug in humans, but could also provide an efficacy signal.
Galvin believes that AGT has a great shot at a potential functional cure for HIV, and if successful, the next question is, “who will price it?”

@@petermuhoho3780 I'm not a lawyer but aren't there any ethics laws that would prevent Pharma from making people sick. Also why aren't people suing if the treatments are making them sick? Thirdly, we need real statistics to see how many people are getting serious side effects. I have however heard of a person pm ARV that is complaining of side effects. There should be an international law against withholding a cure, it's criminal, it's downright murder. They want to lock people up for the dumbest crimes, but where's is the law when you really need it??

I am Medical Microbiologist, and what I haven't understood about the approach is, how long the genetically modified white cells will last before they become obsolete. Considering the fact that leukocytes live for a very short time in the blood stream. Will the modification be made on the stem cells too. Because that to me will ensure a sustainable modified T cell population. Thanks

The current focus is on proving that it can work to move HIV+ persons from antiretroviral therapy to a one-and-done functional cure. Once that is established, we will move deliberately to bring it to patients in need, but the next steps will be determined based on data from the current phase 1 human trial. We hope to see data from phase 1 this year.

I really like Jeff Galvin's candor about it. I never hear the Doctors talk about the side effects of the medicine and how it's like chemo. Also interesting hearing about the cost of $500,000 and the functional cure vs cure. Probably for some it will be a cure based on the other people who've already been cured getting the stem cell transplants. However, not everyone will respond the same way so for them it will be a functional cure that would need to be repeated at a certain point.

Clinical trials take extensive amounts of time as a result of the regulations set in place to ensure safety and efficacy before they are available to the public.

When the body determines that an antibody works, it keeps a copy in case it is needed in the future. Additionally, the cells will replicate and keep working until the infection is gone.

Yeah, the price is crazy but considering it takes $60,000 -$70,000 a year of care for the average patient then it just be a bargain.

500,000 USD is just too much for people living in 3rd world countries, most people can't even make half that money in their entire life times. Pharma companies should not be allowed to monopolize such cure. Reasonable profits on their investments are ok, but this amount is absurd. Do they want to recover their entire investment from the first 100 patients?
