    The Fred Waring Show ran on CBS Television from June 20, 1948, to May 30, 1954. This was a time when a minstrel show theme, complete with blackface and coon stereotypes would be just another episode in a weekly variety show. But in Part One of this video you can see Fred Waring trying very hard to justify it.

      Rap music is poetry; minstrelsy is prototypical rap music, therefore minstrelsy is poetic.
      Certain things offend me, but I just ignore them, because everybody has a right to life. Imagine that - people can ignore what they dislike and GASP! the world doesn't end.
      Clown acts don't offer my taste in music, and the circus tradition, wherefrom minstrelsy also sprung, is also dead thanks to politically correct overreaction and jackasses who don't know how to properly treat animals.
      This is why we can't have nice things.
      Internet comments aren't going to sway me. I was born with a disability, growing up while the Internet en masse was still novel. I don't mean to offend, but I don't care now, nor shall I ever care, what people think, or think they think, about myself and my lifestyle.
      Minstrelsy is musical, comical, and authentically American as an art form. Sometimes better, sometimes worse, but like modern, abstract, or avant garde art, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. History deserves to be remembered, or you'll be blind to the present and entirely lost in the future.
      Good luck with your life, modern society. I'll go on living mine just the same.

      @@PotterPossum1989 The art of caricature is the art of exaggerating defining characteristics until they are funny. There is a point at which it is a gentle form of fun, but this goes beyond that, to the point of insult. The implication through much of the humor here is that Black people are less intelligent than white people, and that their characteristic dialect and style of movement is indicative of that.
      After watching this, I now know that if I ever want to piss of an angry Black person, i can ridicule them by repeating what they say in this dialect with these movement techniques and facial expressions. Because these performances were developed by people who thought it was fun to not take Black people seriously.
      In other words, this isn't really a "nice thing."
      And while one could ignore people doing this, then when they teach this to their children and their children, no one will explain to them what it feels like to watch it from the point of view of the people being lampooned. Lack of that kind of sympathy is what leads to misunderstanding, even to the point of hate and violence.
      Now, I may not be able to change your mind, but since you have copy-pasted the same comment more than once, I figure maybe my reply will help someone else look at this from a different point of view, and maybe start to understand what all the fuss is about.

    Thank you for posting this. You can see how minstrel shows were so popular: the familiar format and characters, the mixture of good music, sentiment and cornball humour. All good family entertainment. It's a pity that the racial aspect has seen this incredibly influential and popular genre condemned and locked away despite the evident good humour and lack of malice with which, at least in its latter days, it was performed.

      "...our stupid society saying everything is racist and white men bad..." You're exaggerating. Our society isn't saying any such thing. What is being said is that there is still too much racism in America. Many are open and proud about it. Others don't realize that many of their negative attitudes towards PoC are based on racial stereotypes that have a very long history. Then there is the institutional racism that is everywhere -- i.e. whites get arrested, while unarmed blacks are being gunned-down all the time, and it is rarely ever punished.

    He doesn't need to try very hard to justify celebrating history and the American theater as it once was - minstrelsy is the most quintessentially American art form, take it or leave it, as it is simply nothing more than prototypical rap or hip-hop. These people you call “sensitive” are educated on African American history in American . It’s more than just a perspective. It’s REAL.

    • @PotterPossum1989
      @PotterPossum1989 4 года назад +2

      It's a real perspective, and just as valid as mine is. You don't know me, I'm not going to cry about you ignorantly judging me; I really don't care either way. We're never going to meet in person, so I don't care. Were we to meet in person, I still wouldn't care.
      Lastly, as a note, the lyrics don't include any truly derogatory terminologies. This is especially evident within the last half of the show, and the final song, which did contain such epithets in its earlier formulation. Fred Waring was being sensitive. This was merely political correctness in transition. Thank God it exists in its entirety. It is truly historically authentic insofar as its era.
