Its always a delight having Jude Kessler on your show Matt, Jude is such a Lovely guest. Im always fascinated with her conversations of John Lennon.- Hearing her describe John's childhood and teenage years with such detail about his losses of his Uncle George, his Mother Julia, and Stuart Sutcliffe made my eyes well up and got me choked up.She's a great storyteller, -and hearing about someone like Scott Mckinley reading Jude's book for audio and doing the voices is mind boggling and to say the least-a monumental task.Cant wait to hear it !!! 👍👍

Matt and Jude, I have seen a lot on RUclips about the Beatles but this is the by far the very best analysis and explanation ever for John and his role in the group. It explains all the mysteries, and answers so many questions. Given John's fundamental insecurities, songs such as "She Loves You" and "You're Going to Lose That Girl" take on a new light. Even songs in the third person are replete with his anxieties and search for love. "Nowhere Man". "Mean Mr. Mustard". Neither Paul nor Klein nor Yoko could help him.

Such a wonderful discussion Matt! I enjoy hearing Jude talk Beatles and John. She seems to be focused on getting to the truth about who John was as a person rather than trying to promote a certain narrative like other authors. I am glad she is writing these series of books on John and getting it right. Thanks for sharing Matt!

Wow, what a fantastic interview! You two interact so well together I feel like I’m in the room with you. So much insight into John’s psyche. Matt, you asked the question, “why did John ditch Paul?” since Paul always stuck by John. Their relationship was far more complex and close than Jude seems to think. (The Get Back series alone should prove that) To keep it simple- although it surely is not-I believe that Paul was John’s great lifelong love (bromantically speaking) but there was a change in their relationship after Paul got together with Linda in May 1968 when he and John went to New York to promote Apple. I think he was afraid that Paul would abandon him, so he began to abandon Paul first. John got with Yoko almost immediately after that trip to New York. Then in 1969 John said he wanted a divorce and Paul headed for Scotland, crushed. Paul did not talk to John for months, and as we know, the Beatles broke up. John was irrationally angry at Paul McCartney, which we all got to hear about in his music and in interviews. I also want to say that I believe Yoko got John into Primal Scream therapy to break him down and find out where all his weaknesses were so she could control him. Sorry for so many comments but that’s what comes up when you present such a thought provoking interview! Well done. Leaves us wanting more ! PS congratulations on your marriage ❤
Hey Cynthia, I appreciate the comments. I always wondered why John would be any more threatened by Linda and not be threatened by Jane Asher. Maybe there is a topic in there somewhere. I will be in touch with Jude so you'll be hearing her again!
Jude mentioned Paul’s21st birthday. John was quite rude to Jane - as for Linda, I think John sensed Linda was the one Paul would settle down with and feared it would change their relationship. I recommend Understanding Lennon and McCartney youTube series parts 1 and 2. Part 2, The Breakup is especially revealing. There are no commentators; it’s their own words.
@@cynthiaforsythe8989 Yes, that Understanding series is excellent. I think many have been removed however. Yes, Jane was not a fan of John... It would be great to get her story. She's the last one to not have said anything! I kind of admire that.

Echoing what others here have said, Jude is a terrific interview. She's got a likable personality, she's a good story-teller, and her knowledge of the Beatles is encyclopedic. The lengthy discussion of John Lennon was fascinating, especially the influences and circumstances of John's youth that contributed to his personality and his destiny. No wonder John had an "edge" to his personality. Also, I think John was smarter than most of the people around him, including the other Beatles. It showed in his lyrics especially. He just had a natural talent (as his mother apparently told him).

i'd love to get Jude's books but...its a nightmare now trying to order them or anything else,offline. I never go online since i got hacked about 8 years ago to do anything on Amazon or whoever. Which of course, rather limits ones access to books and such given the store what used to get North American material for me now has stopped doing it!! Most odd!!. So the audiobook versions might be more accessible once somebody loads them onto RUclips that is. But thankfully we've had your excellent vids emerge with Erin and Robert and co bringing the level of discussion of it all way higher than I'd ever thought likely. Ty again!
Picturing Jude and hubby in the midst of the scallyvales is a stunning mental picture-talk about going where angels long since refused to tread. I think her and her partners innocence saved them!!
The Beats didn't evacuate the 'place' for no reason. I escaped many years since of course and prefer only to view it via Google Earth these days. Especially since all my aunts and uncles and such have died off. Most gloomy. Alas I easily picture her and her hubby being soaked for drinks and such...embarrassingly likely. I guess that why they didn't get mugged, or rather, as they politely coughed up they were then sure to be protected? Sorry, i can't resist tearing the urine out of the former abode.

Always an interesting discussion with Jude. I am not a fan of Jude’s psycho analysis of Lennon, or how she tells these stories as if she were there in the first person. However, there is no doubt about her commitment and dedication to find out The Beatles “truth”.

People still talk about the lives of classical composers so it’s likely the Beatles will be remembered and discussed long after we are all gone. It’s like people who study the Titanic. We really wish it had come out differently but with the story as it is we never get enough.
Her work reminded me of Pilar Urbano, a Spanish political journalist turned writer, and her books about the Spanish crown, using Jude´s same technique.
thanks for the time and vids Matt. Jude's a great guest and listen, so i was wondering if you've ever asked Jude what does she know what was in the letters John's father wrote to him, that would be an excuse to have her on again and she could go into depth with that.
I don't believe those letters survived. Aunt Mimi never produced them so far as I know.
I was in New York when I heard he was shot. It's so depressing. It's been 40+ years now. Leave him alone.

John did lose Paul in 1966. I'm surprised you both dance around this. This is my fourth video of yours I've watched with Jude, all very impressive, but this is a game changer.
Fascinating. I've beenv researching the Beatles Elvis meeting for years when Anthology came out I thought finally we are going to get the truth. Since that one I binned the previous accounts of a jam session from the Memphis Mafia, Marty Lacker Priscilla and Larry Geller etc Who were there. Every time the subject comes up I just reply the Beatles said there was no jam. One fan Paul Litcher met Paul McCartney in the 70s he wrote a book called the Man who Dared to Rock he quoted Paul as saying the whole time they were jamming Elvis had a tape machine running. Elvis did have a tape machine in that house and some of his own private recordings have been released since his death but Anthology killed all hope of that being true. The Beatles also buy into misinformation about themselves and Elvis. Ive read all the books by people who knew him and not one said he wanted them out of the US or was jealous he loved the early music especially he got on with them all it was only in the 70s John Lennon became John Lenin but even then he wanted to help with the authorities who were going to deport him. I learnt new things about Johns family situation from this interview I always attached romantic meaning into John songs rather than them being broken relationship rather than family obviously some are about that after seeing the Peter Jackson documentary Im not sure the words came first the songs seemed to evolve the music and lyrics very often turned into something else through the collaborative process. When I see the songs being intellectualised I wonder they adopted the critical interpretation as their own. I still can't see Blackbird is about civil rights I think Macca adopted that one. Getting to the truth is so important I think we will still be learning new things about The Beatles in 150 years time.
Yes, history takes time to sort out. Diaries, paperwork, letters resurface years after events so I would expect that type of material to keep coming. I also agree with you re: Blackbird.

My feeling is that there wasn't a lot of commraderie with the king, given that they were all Elvis fanboys, slightly awestruck from meeting him but also it would have been awkward given that they were both in a completely different headspace in August 1965. The Beatles were on a trajectory to conquer the world, musically and culturally while Elvis had been there, done that and now just revelling in his own swill.
I believe Paul's story that he was playing bass, and that George might have asked him why he wasn't making any decent music, but it would've been too much going on for them to organise themselves and actually "jam" or make any decent music together. Maybe John might have, but I doubt there was any chemistry between the two. In '65, the Beatles were still in their early to mid 20's while Elvis, at 30yo was not only a man, but a doyen of the 'rock star' archetype.
His reputation as a living legend was beyond question, even back then, and it was revealed later that he was a bit cynical of the Beatles' rise to the top, to say the least. We he might have appreciated the Beatles' musicianship/songwritingskills , even their talent as performers, Elvis was big on status and holding onto his iconic legacy was a major concern in 65, making all that B-grade Hollywood crap. Sure we can dream up scenarios, but other than a cordial, somewhat mutually awestruck encounter, I bet nothing much happened musically, which is why Jude came up with nothing much. Let's face it, had something decent really happened, there wouldn't be any mixed account now, would there?

There is way more to comprehend John Lennon besides his childhood influences. If you check out James Hillman's "The Soul's Code," you can get an inkling of how prominent people have a destiny that goes beyond what their families and other environments along with genetics, contribute. It's a fascinating perspective, but not at all mainstream. John Lennon was a mythic figure. Like all mythic figures, very complicated. He tapped into and expressed The Soul of the world; the song "Imagine" is just one example, even though the lyrics are quite naive. But the world yearns for that naivete. (See also, "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" lol)
Just want to add that each one of us has a destiny. Important to remember that John was viewed as a "trouble maker" as a teenager. He was destined to be a troublemaker.

You said that Lennon was “washed up”, what exactly did you mean by that?
Once Lennon went back to Ono, it took him six years to come up with the material for Double Fantasy. He simply wasn't interested in music making and when he eventually returned, his music had lost its edge. Thanks for the comments marcus!
@@popgoesthe60s52 ok, I figured that’s what you were saying, but just wanted the clarification just in case. As you said, I think it had more to do with him losing interest in the making music and was uninspired. But as we all know now, he was still making/writing music in sketches. Because the songs that he was crafting in sequences were still fairly strong, i don’t know if I would use the term “Washed up” to describe his ability as a songwriter during that period. The “househusband” years certainly made him more domestic. I could perhaps see the “washed up” sentiments being applied there since we didn’t take Lennon as a guy who could remain chill and non-active

The myths and fables started early. On the Vee-Jay album, the version I have, in the bio of George, it says he had been in the U.S. before the group (which he was) but it also says he had met then President JF Kennedy., which he of course he didn't as far as I can tell. Emerick's book was clearly anti Harrison, and he had no love for Ringo either. It was evident he was a Paul man. Most of the bios, as you say, can't ignore the personal bias.
Cynthia Lennon seems almost as enigmatic as Lennon himself. I often wondered if she was as meek as her own books and other books she was in, imply. Ms. Kessler seems to contend she wasn't. In his last letter to Cynthia, he claimed their problems began before the drugs and even before Yoko. But in the same letter he "accused" Cynthia of having the idea to get remarried, which she was later quoted as saying was "stupid." Complicated people all around. You have to wonder if Lennon's sometime abuse of the women in his life would survive today.

It would seem that technology has now afforded the musician a chance to achieve that goal. Sir Paul McCartney says he has employed artificial intelligence to help create what he calls "the final Beatles record".

Paul McCartney said to BBC, 13 th june 2023: _"I'm not on the internet that much but people will say to me, yeah, there's a track where John's singing one of my songs, and it's just AI, you know?.....It's kind of scary of terror but exciting, because it's the future. We'll just have to see where that leads."_
SEAN LENNON said: _"All we did was clan noise from the vocal track. People are completely misunderstanding wath occurred. There have always been ways of ‘de-noising’ tracks but _*_A.I._*_ just does it better because it learns what the vocal is and is able to very precisely remove everything that is not the vocal…. I shouldn’t speak too mucho on this yet but I’ll just say the track turned out beautifully and I think everyone will be very happy”._
Yeah, Jude is great! I may do something on Ai, but I want to see how this plays out a bit more.
If John and George hung out so much together, why didn't they write songs together?
Good question. I think the Lennon-McCartney was so established that when George did contribute to their songs, he was not officially credited.
Ive often wondered myself had John collaborated in writing songs with George, as well as George collaborating with Paul, - one can only think and wonder how much MORE Greater (as Great as they already were!!!) The Beatles may have been???
One more comment. John's sisters have a very interesting take on Julia and John, and while I am apt to believe their aunt's deathbed statement, Julia still astounds me in her profound lack of interest in her son. The photo of her c1949 pregant with nine year old John is truly pitiful. Her in a poses picture John cannot sit still and appears to be angry at the photographer (as he sits with his mother). Julia lived just a short mile or so from Mimi yet was not involved in John's upbringing. Absolutely pathetic.
There has been some revisionism by Julia Baird, John's half sister, and some may be appropriate, but observance of the facts suggests largely what you say. Even though Mimi was not really a nice person and she certainly did some things wrong with John, she did quite a lot right as well.
