Hi Reg. There was a big change in SD card contents between the first batches of units. Mine shipped with just one project but a full 64 kits - and that's what I used to make this video. But the SD card image was very quickly updated to include 6 projects with about 6 to 10 kits per project. I think you're probably looking at the kits available in just one project. There was also some other tweaks that enabled the easy creation of initialized projects. So it was an excellent update. What makes it a little confusing is that the firmware version stayed at 1.1 so it wasn't immediately obvious. If you load up some other projects you should see some other kits. If there's any doubt about what you have you can download the card contents as a zipped file from the Erica website. Then compare that to what your own card has.

Hi Richard i'm giving the LXR another go - how do i create a new project please ? I've put the SD card in to my PC but i can't create a new folder which looks like that's how to create a new project to load the kit, pattern and empty song into.I can see the kit sounds, patterns and empty songs in groups of 3 but i'm a bit stumped TBH.I have 6 projects which i think are demo projects and about ( varying ) 8ish kits and same ( roughly ) no of patterns so i'm a bit lost ATM.Also,do you know what IDK stands for as everyone that i ask just says i don't know !
Maybe you're overthinking this? You don't need to create anything. If you want to start with a 'blank canvas' then you'd just load an empty project. For example, hit 'load+project' and wind the main knob until you see the word 'empty' appear, then load that. You have an empty (new) project. It will likewise just have initialized kits and patterns. So everything is empty. When you tweaked things then save the pattern, kit and project, giving it a new name.
Hi Richard having created a project i would like to know is it possible to load kits and patterns from the pre-existing projects rather than the init kit please ?
@@twiglet2214 A project is its own little universe, kits and patterns live in a project and there's no way (using the machine controls) to move them between projects. But if you pull out the SD card you can freely move, copy and rename kits and patterns between projects. You just have to be careful to keep the file structure intact. For example, you can't have two versions of Kit 7. If you're getting started this whole area is best avoided imo. Just go to one of the existing factory projects that has some spare space in it and start with that. Then you can copy or tweak existing patterns and kits to learn all the basics.
Fantastic - thanks Richard i'll give that a whirl and see what i can achieve.Couldn't see how to bung you a coffee or two as it's most helpful your feedback thanks !
Can i copy single sounds from any kit to a new kit ? First, most basic and essential thing i would want to do, listen through the preset sounds and make some favourite kits as it takes a lot of experience to create the sounds you want. Or would i have to go through and write out all parameters to recreate them ?
@@RichardDeHove Thought so, had it here for two days but returned it. There are some sounds i like spread over those 64+ Presets, first thing i would want to do is make a few favourite kits of those. It would be very time consuming to recreate those from scratch.
Fair enough - I sold my first LXR-02. Sometimes you find your perfect machine and other times you cycle through machine after machine. I've owned *lots* of drum machines over the years. The LXR certainly isn't perfect but has many good points. As far as programming it goes, I thought it would be tedious and so bought a faderfox MIDI controller but ended up never using it since the LXR is surprisingly fast. What's your next choice in drum machine?
Hi Richard i've just fired up for the first time and the screen shows " loading projects " and V 1.1 and when i press load and kits i get about 5 kits up to (bedonka and the rest from 5 to 63 are empty ? I need to upgrade to v 1.6 and wonder if this will fix the issue of empty kits ? If not how do i install the missing kits please ? It was a B stock item and it has a 2021 year of manufacture on the data plate.Hoping you can shed some light,if not then light my shed ? Cheers Richard.
It's all about what's on the microSD card - and making sure it has the correct file structure. Take the card out, examine the card on your computer, copy all the existing structure as-is into a new folder (as a backup in case of disaster), then add the new firmware and extra kits from the Erica website. < All of which is very easy to write. I will make a video about this today and post the video asap.
Ok i think it's becoming clearer now - i need to open a project to access the kits stored in that project ? I've been powering on and then just pressing load/kits - so i need to load a project first ? Also when i install the latest kit sounds to the sd card should i put them in to a folder on the sd card rather than straight to the card ? Looks like i won't be needing the biscuit tin after all ! Cheers Richard.
@@twiglet2214 The file structure on the card tells the story. When you open a project folder on the card (looking at it on computer) you'll see the .snd files (which are the kits). Each project contains it's own set of kits and patterns. If you want to move kits around you just have to move them into the relevant project folder and make sure you follow the correct naming conventions. Also might be worth checking the global option linking kits to patterns. If it's on then a pattern will always load the kit it was saved with. So yes, a project is its own little world. It's own patterns, kits, songs and preferences.
@@RichardDeHove Thanks Richard i've just checked it and i can see the wood for the trees now so it's been a lesson in following prompts in chronological order from the beginning. Thanks for the feedback and i look forward to some serious bedonking !
setting shuffle amount does not change anything on my lxr-02. Programmed a beat with eight notes, but setting shuffle to higher amount keeps the beat straight.
Sounds like your kit structure is corrupted. I'd download a fresh copy of the firmware and kits from Erica Synths and reload your card. (Just save off all your current stuff from the card in case)
I'm seeing the same thing. Great catch! We should both report it to Erica - I know they're currently working on the next firmware update which will mainly be bug-catching. Edit: I've submitted a bug report with an example video of the problem.
The MIDI state of each voice, and the selection of the main BPM being either a set amount or "EXT" is saved per project. So just save your project with the EXT setting and that should do it.
Is there an easy way (either on the machine itself or, via File Explorer in Windows) to copy kits from one project to another? If I copy kits from one project folder to another, will the machine recognise/find them? What does the file called "prj" do and how can I edit it?
Just take the SD card out and do it on your computer. The file structure is pretty simple. It can also be good to do this if you don;t like using the knobs to create kit names, you can quickly rename everything. The usual two warnings apply: Take a copy of your card contents first (it's a tiny amount of memory); and second, make sure you keep the file structure intact.
Hi. I finally got one of these yesterday. Still very much in the manual-reading/tutorial-watching phase. One thing I can't find in the manual is, on what page/menu is the flam and note offset options?
First of all flam only was added with firmware 1.2 so make sure you're at least to there (current firmware is 1.3). You can see the firmware version in the corner of the display when you boot up. assuming that's OK then to get to the flam and offset you need to click the "voice" button a second time. So, be in "voice" mode then hit the "voice" button again. It's one of those things you can never work out just by looking at the buttons :/
@@RichardDeHove Boom! Thank you ever so much. I was working from a dl of the 1.0 manual for a 1.3 machine (I had the guy in the store update the firmware before I paid for it). Thanks. Now back to the tutorials....
@@RichardDeHove yes, my problem is being able to create a decent snare, I know it's lazy, but to grab any sound from any kit really helps. @@mymockumentary9716 It'd be great to grab individual sounds - even via the card would be OK. With the steps, Erica added flam and nudging in the last update so that was a big improvement.

Oh my. You Sir,, i swear you are doing the Lords work my goodness. I bought this machine but never expected to be needing tutorials in order to understand it. Regarding your comment "if you got a Db 01..... synchronized...react the same" . Do you mean if I connect the Midi Out of the Db01 to the Midi In of the Lxr or the other way around?
Regarding sync I think either way will work. If the DB-01 is the master then it needs to be sending clock or as a slave then put clock select to MIDI. As a slave the LXR needs the bpm wound down to EXT: ruclips.net/video/2uwTzVBhUgE/видео.html Dominus Vobiscum :D
Hi there! Do you know how to set up your LXR02 to receive Pattern change messages? I have it connected to the Octatrack and the other units are changing when I change the pattern in the Octatrack. The LXR02 stays on pattern 01. I know the answer is somewhere in the Config Settings for MRT, MRX and MTX but have not gotten it to work. Any help?
I haven't tried that yet so can't help directly, but I think you are in the right area. Setting both mtx and mrx to "all" and setting the global MIDI channel should look after the LXR side of things. Maybe you could send the Octatrack info into a DAW as a test with a MIDI analyzer to make sure than sent info was correct too?
Great stuff and big help Cheers 👌Just picked one up today with firmware 1.6. Do you cover this too or should I learn about this elsewhere? Really great tutorial 👏👏👏🤘

Thank you for this very clear and useful video, Richard! I learned a lot and went up the curve quickly thanks to you. However I'm having an odd problem: when, for example, i set drum 1 to midi channel 1, and drum 2 to midi channel 2, and then i play channel 1/drum 1 via midi, it also triggers drum 2. i'm using an octatrack as the midi controller for context. any ideas? many thanks! additional context: i'm in voice mode, and this behavior only happens when i've selected to edit on the lxr, in the example above, drum 2. if i've selected drum 1 and trigger drum 1 via the octatrack there's no issue. it's like the midi channel info gets merged on the lxr. sorry if this is a confusing description!!
Thanks Ben. I'm not familar with the Octatrack MIDI send options but perhaps there's something in there about channel selection that would be relevant. Otherwise, on the LXR have you set each instrument to a specific note number, or just to "any" and then each on a different channel? I've tried the "any" and multiple channels setup using a Keystep-37 and it works as expected - when you change the MIDI channel you can play each instrument across the full range of the keyboard. I also had the MRX and MTX MIDI options both set to "ALL" in the LXR config page (which is the default). Perhaps it'd be worth expermenting by just having two LXR instruments on the same channel but different note numbers and see if that triggers properly, then keep those different note numbers but try different channels?
@@RichardDeHove I’ve set Drums 1-3 to note any and each to their own midi channel. The other instruments are set to midi channel 4, each to a separate note. What is most peculiar is that this behavior only happens when the instrument is selected on the LXR. So if there’s a kick (drum 1) on steps 1,5, 9 and 13 and a snare on steps 5 and 13, as soon as I select the snare to edit in voice mode on the LXR it starts to play drum 1’s pattern. When I move to drum 2, then this instrument plays drum 1’s pattern. Even more strange is that this does not occur on the clap/cym and hh instruments. There are no note assignment conflicts on the LXR nor on midi or note conflicts on the octatrack. It really seems dependent on which instrument is being edited on the LXR. Spooky behavior. So I submitted a ticket.
@@bengoldberger1113 Yep, a job for Erica. The only other thing to try in the meantime would be a different MIDI controller and see if you get the same result.
Maybe someone here can answer this for me. I just got mine a couple of days ago. Can this machine do sub steps? I can't find anything about it so I'm guessing you can't.
For starters you'd probably want to have the option to 'save kit with pattern' switched on. Then just save the pattern to a new slot and assign a new kit and save that.
@@RichardDeHove interesting! so you have like MFX inserts? Which of your videos should i check out that covers this? Im a sucker for HP cuts on master chains, that mixed with morph function got me tingling ...
@@NeoLudditevisons I haven't shown the filter on the outputs (or any of the output effects) because I was waiting for the effects to improve with firmware updates. Likewise the song mode which I think is the other bug still existing. Song mode works fine, but the displayed pattern is 1 numeral "out", so it gets very confusing. OTOH maybe it got fixed in 1.6, I should check...
Richard, I received my LXR02 without any presets or kits.. I already created a ticket in order to solve it. Should I send the factory preset data via usb cable to the LXR (with the SD inserted of course) or should I use the card alone with a computer that you can input your sd card adapter? I connected via usb my drumsynth and cant see it as a drive :( Thank you! Nice tutorials! Cant wait for the 4th one!
Erica should get back to you fast with an answer but: My LXR-02 came with a slightly older card image which meant I wasn't getting the same kits or functionality. I downloaded the new card image contents from Erica here: www.ericasynths.lv/shop/standalone-instruments-1/drum-synthesizer-lxr-02/ You'll see "Factory SD content" at the bottom of the page as a zip file. I took the card from my LXR put it in a little reader on my PC. From there I dragged off the current contents (just in case) and dropped the new contents (projects 0 to 5 and the two other files) onto the card. Make sure the five projects and files are at the top level of your SD card, not sitting within another folder. Rebooted the LXR while holding in the encoder button to do the update ( see the manual). All worked very smoothly. Certainly that's what I'd try.
Yes. It is actually a big area with real-time entry on the unit; external controller real time and automation. A beta of firmware 1.2 has really improved quantization on entry too.
@@jurgenschumacher9452 I believe the release is imminent. I got a beta for my last video after I asked because I was worried things might change and make the video irrelevant :)
@@RichardDeHove I think there is a lot of work to do. Also in the FX Area. especially in the delay section. Haven't seen your suggestion because of this until now. Maybe i passed?
@@jurgenschumacher9452 I haven't covered anything with effects because I'm hoping they'll get an upgrade. OTOH I'm generally never very impressed with onboard effects. Overall though I'm really happy with the LXR, it's extremely versatile and great fun to program.
Thank you so much for this!! So helpful. I do have a question, if you change parameters on another pattern will it revert back to previous sounds when you switch back and forth patterns? *Instant like and sub btw 👍
Thanks Nala :) The answer to your question is that it depends what preference you've set for that project. Each project can have its own "kit change mode" (KCM in the config menu). If KCM is set to "auto" then when you change to a pattern it will automatically load whatever kit was saved with that pattern. If KCM is set to "off" then the new pattern will play with whatever sounds you have loaded. KCM on auto load is great if you've carefully programmed a pattern with unusual sounds so you can always recall it. But this makes it dangerous to change patterns with unsaved kit changes since they may easily be lost.
@@RichardDeHove Same here, and has the LXR saved you? It seems very tempting to go along with my DB-01. Went from Volca Sample to TR6s to DFAM. Had been planning on buying up some more modules and for a fuller kit, but after seeing this released I'm wondering if it's worth all the time saving and money spent to have a modular drum kit, rather than just grabbing this and maybe doing more sound based modules rather than percussion. Also considering going both ways because I assume they would turn out to be vastly different paths.
@@AZ-zf1eu I know what you mean. There's so many different potential paths and most are filled with interesting things. I had just begun to build a serious Euro drum machine with a WMD Crater and a few other modules and had a SQ-64 on order to be the brains. Ended up selling Crater and cancelling the SQ-64 which is more than the cost difference for an LXR-02 right there. The reason I'm liking the LXR so much is that it's a true drum synth, you're not locked into a particular sound. I see many people already saying how hard and aggressive it is, but it's also very easy to make it all ambient and swooshy as well. It also looks beautiful sitting next to the DB-01 :)
@@RichardDeHove Yeah this is exactly why I went for the DFAM after the TR6s. Just felt like i want something more in the sound design realm. Drum synth over just machine. Considered the digitakt also. As samplers seem to be a bit similar in designing but by different methodology. I think part of the trade for me is with modular stuff for drums it’s not as contained in a smaller box. And some of ease is gone. But with a classic drum machine it’s to one sound. This is seemed like a perfect hybrid since I first heard it. Funny I was onto to similar ideas with the sq 64 so much thoughts and gear to accomplish what this seems to do with ease(minus a few quirks)
Nice video! Question though: thoughts on this vs the Model Samples? Aside from workflow are you seeing major differences? It's double the price so considering them both atm. Thanks :)
I can't compare directly to the Model Samples since I don't know that one well enough. But I think the two big differences between this and most other drum machines are that it isn't trying to emulate anything; and most importantly: it doesn't "protect you". Many drum machines keep most parameters to a range where you can't really go wrong. With the LXR-02 you can easily wander off into deep weirdness.
@@rahulbaidh The machine I really like the look of is the Perkons HD-01 due for release by the end of 2021. From the demos it seems to me like a knobby mix of a DB-01 and an LXR-02. Very pricey though :(

It will likewise just have initialized kits and patterns. So everything is empty. When you tweaked things then save the pattern, kit and project, giving it a new name.
Thanks Richard i'll get cracking now and enjoy the LXR now that i know how to create projects - it's a game changer !
Sadly no. There's no way to copy individual sounds from kit to kit :(
@@RichardDeHove Thought so, had it here for two days but returned it.
Here's the new video which should be all you need: ruclips.net/video/R1lOFlADtiQ/видео.html
Micro-shifting individual steps left or right is much more satisfying.
Great vid…great box…all good 😊
Hi, my unit wont load any kits. I wrote this pattern and that is all it plays even if unplugging it! Is there a factory reset?
Sounds like your kit structure is corrupted. I'd download a fresh copy of the firmware and kits from Erica Synths and reload your card. (Just save off all your current stuff from the card in case)
Great tutorial, thank you! I can't seem to get shuffle to work when synced via Midi, anyone else have this problem, or as I doing something wrong?
I'm seeing the same thing. Great catch! We should both report it to Erica - I know they're currently working on the next firmware update which will mainly be bug-catching. Edit: I've submitted a bug report with an example video of the problem.
Is there any way to sync the LXR to external gear by default without having to turn the bpm to "ext" all the time turning the unit on?
The MIDI state of each voice, and the selection of the main BPM being either a set amount or "EXT" is saved per project. So just save your project with the EXT setting and that should do it.
@@RichardDeHove Danke Richard!
Thanks. Now back to the tutorials....
on the LXR-01 you can load individual parts, I have noticed it's missing on 02
Do you mean loading individual sounds from different kits? That'd certainly be useful, especially if you have a favorite kick.
@@RichardDeHove yes, my problem is being able to create a decent snare, I know it's lazy, but to grab any sound from any kit really helps. The LXR-01 also has sub steps. the 02 is a disappointment so far. However, an update would easily sort it, really unsure why such a necessary part of a drum machine is missing. I will be contacting the company and ask them what's up?????
@@mymockumentary9716 It'd be great to grab individual sounds - even via the card would be OK. With the steps, Erica added flam and nudging in the last update so that was a big improvement.
@@RichardDeHove lol, I knew I was missing something, I have only had it a few hours, still trying to control drum beats via PC, I think I am suffering from "initial tech acquisition"
I did update the 02 before this conversation, I just didn't delete 1.1 so it automatically updated 1.1 and ignored 1.2. All sorted now!
As a slave the LXR needs the bpm wound down to EXT: ruclips.net/video/2uwTzVBhUgE/видео.html
Dominus Vobiscum :D
@@RichardDeHove Thank you! Much obliged!
Huge thanks to you!
hello, can we import our own sample via sd card ? best vibes
No. This is purely a drum synth.
Back for another go around
There's a real satisfaction in mastering a machine.
Thank you so much for this, the instruction booklet is nice looking but nearly as helpful as this.
Gracias!
So helpful!! Amazing, thank you!
A pleasure!
Great stuff and big help Cheers 👌Just picked one up today with firmware 1.6. Do you cover this too or should I learn about this elsewhere? Really great tutorial 👏👏👏🤘
Hail Caesar! The big firmware update was 1.2 which added microtiming, flams, and editing while in performance mode. Update 1.6 was mainly just bug fixes. I'm still actively using the LXR-02 and making new content. Maybe something on the LXR playlist may help: ruclips.net/p/PLgrwgktphRrDUA6RaeiPR2xgbHi8XSPxw
Haha Cheers and good to learn. Thank you for making life much easier for the rest of us. Definitely entertained 👍🥳 Definitely checking your playlist out 🤘@@RichardDeHove
nice. congratz sir and thank you! cheers!
You're very welcome!
I submitted a ticket with Erica Synths. I'll update with their response when I get it :)
@@RichardDeHove quick update: Erica has responded and believes it's a bug. I'll be sending them a video and will update again once they respond.
Maybe someone here can answer this for me. I just got mine a couple of days ago. Can this machine do sub steps? I can't find anything about it so I'm guessing you can't.
No flam / ratchet ability. All you can do is double the tempo or perhaps add some faster gate or filter effects by CV.
@@RichardDeHove Thanks for clarifying. I'm loving this thing so far though.
Can i copy tracks from kit to another kit?
For starters you'd probably want to have the option to 'save kit with pattern' switched on. Then just save the pattern to a new slot and assign a new kit and save that.
Where do I get the kits drum sounds ?
The SD content is on Erica Synths website here: www.ericasynths.lv/media/LXR_factory_SD_image_06.07.zip
I am going to watch all your LXR 02 videos then decide if I want to get one! is there a master filter on this thing btw?
No global master that affects everything. But there are filters for each voice and you could choose to add an overall filter as an output effect.
OTOH maybe it got fixed in 1.6, I should check...
how to delete whole project?
Probably easiest to just a copy a blank project over the top. Otherwise you could take the SD card out and delete it directly from card on computer.
Understood, thank u!
have you played with the LXR? what are the differences?
Never used an original. They're reasonably rare since they were only available kit form. Hopefully someone else might have a comparison...
@@RichardDeHove they both sound great to me
Thanks Mate !! Nice video ;)
I downloaded the new card image contents from Erica here:
www.ericasynths.lv/shop/standalone-instruments-1/drum-synthesizer-lxr-02/
You'll see "Factory SD content" at the bottom of the page as a zip file.
Wow thank u so much for your answer! I will definetely do that. Im learning a lot thanks to you. Hugs from Argentina
Oh bollocks mate!!! Crikey!!!
Streuth mate, what a bloody bonza comment! ;)
You will do a recording tutorial also?
Yes. It is actually a big area with real-time entry on the unit; external controller real time and automation. A beta of firmware 1.2 has really improved quantization on entry too.
@@RichardDeHove where to get this upgrade?
@@jurgenschumacher9452 I believe the release is imminent. I got a beta for my last video after I asked because I was worried things might change and make the video irrelevant :)
@@RichardDeHove I think there is a lot of work to do. Also in the FX Area. especially in the delay section. Haven't seen your suggestion because of this until now. Maybe i passed?
@@jurgenschumacher9452 I haven't covered anything with effects because I'm hoping they'll get an upgrade. OTOH I'm generally never very impressed with onboard effects. Overall though I'm really happy with the LXR, it's extremely versatile and great fun to program.
is kit number 51 named on your lxr or is it nameless for you ?
Unnamed. Just the Init kit.
Ohh snap son, you got one. Hehe if I wasn’t planning on the bitbox and the Erica drum sequencer this definitely be on my list.
I've been flailing about in drum limbo for ages, tried the TR8S, Euro drums, VSTs , and had been considering the Modor.
@@RichardDeHove Awesome thanks for the info, enjoy :)
I'm planning to buy both of them. Any other recommendations?
@@rahulbaidh The machine I really like the look of is the Perkons HD-01 due for release by the end of 2021. From the demos it seems to me like a knobby mix of a DB-01 and an LXR-02. Very pricey though :(
