    The lack of a "works with GNU/Linux" notation on the packaging of a hardware product does not mean GNU/Linux will not easily work with it, often without a product-specific device driver.

      And sometimes the vendor mistakenly will say on their website that it will NOT work with Linux, when it actually will. I prefer working from 0500 to 1200 and having afternoons free for outdoor activities such as kayaking, hiking, cycling, etc. I found having a separate static sitting desk for writing/reading and a standing desk when using my computer to be better than a single sit/stand desk. The extra real estate on the static sitting desk is essential in my mind.

    Hot Tip for new Plasma users.
    DO NOT have more than 1 application launcher button on your panels (the equivalent to the Start button prettymuch)
    It is the buggiest mess that will start your application search in another start button for no reason after rebooting.
    If you want icon management similar to windows on the bottom on multiple monitors, the widget name is Icons-Only Task Manager.
    As far as "primary screens" goes. I still have yet to figure it out. But wherever you place the default panel is typically where stuff tries to go, but some programs just ignore it and search for "screen 1" and KDE doesn't seem to let you set it. Even tried different ordering and it just ignored me.

    • @littlepeon
      @littlepeon 2 года назад +1

      Most Canon printers are supported now. There are just a few exceptions with the multi-function machines sometimes. My biggest gripe is that in Windows, it tells me when my ink levels and paper levels are low and I've never found a driver to do this with Linux! Also when a few of my wifi connected printers go into sleep mode, they drop connectivity with Linux and don't wake up connected where they do in Windows (never drop off the network during sleep apparently)

      @@maskedredstonerproz Computers are meant to make life easier- the exact definition of "lazy". And while yes it seems to be quite easy for Windows developers to do this, as it's practically a standard feature with the dozen or so Canon printers I've used, seems elusive on the Linux platform. More upset over the network issue. Linux normally does great with network issues. Most times when the printer goes to sleep on wifi, have to restart whole network stack for it to be "found" again- disappointing.

      Yes, but sometimes printer manufacturers skimp on hardware parts to save money. This created a long line of cheap printers that were known as Win-Printers as they made up for the lack of hardware control in the software drivers(something that the Linux Kernel couldn't reverse- engineer). You raised some key points about Linux whether or not they were intentional. If people out there are serious about becoming acquainted with Linux, they really need to embrace reading in order to harvest the best experience. Whether it is reading the box of your hardware or reading the blogs, tutorials, and support content for the software. Windows and Mac are about convenience. Linux is about freedom. People are wise to make a careful decision about what their goals are in these principles or they are going to be shelling out money very unhappily.

    Well, if it's on the box, it will be supported. It might not be mentioned on the box, because the company that build the device might not have made official drivers for it.
    But it's not uncommon for enthusiasts to hack together a driver that actually works. But the company that made the device isn't going to take responsibility in that case, and so you shouldn't expect support from them (you might even void your warranty) . So if possible, certainly use a device that says it's supported on Linux :-)

    As a vegan and linux user i find the similarities between the two lifestyles very funny. I agree with what you said, here in the internet people will try to argue with other people for any reason, they will even take them out of context to do so. Better for one's own health to avoid arguing with others

    I find Linux support to be fine on my PC, even my Radeon GPU works wonders without downloading a 500 MB driver installation file.
    But my WiFi card, is, for the sake of the supreme being, a Broadcom card.
    A pain to set up, and even installing the proprietary drivers makes it nominally work but it can't detect other networks. Maybe something in the configs is wrong.

  • @Bob-of-Zoid
    @Bob-of-Zoid 2 года назад

    Don't forget, that a crap load of hardware that doesn't have Linux support from it's maker, may still work in Linux if it follows standards, and many devices have a driver because some Linux developer reverse engineered it and made one. Always do a search with the brand and model of your device: "Use YOUR DEVICE on Linux", and you may just find a driver or way to get it to work, and many of those devices will be recognized by your distro. I know that on Debian based distro's I had to download and install a special driver for my EMU 0404 Professional sound card (An old but still great one), but on my Arch based distro EndeavourOS, it's recognized and the driver installed automatically. (

    On the politics, I've been very intrigued about this with you. You will literally speak positively and negatively about "both sides". Which is funny to me. I'm not one to make assumptions about people but I will this time and wager that you and I would see eye to eye on a lot and vehemently disagree on just as much. It's a good thing. We shouldn't agree on everything or even almost anything. We should each form our own opinions based on the information presented and after having an honest conversation with "the other". I see liberals, libertarians, conservatives, progressives and everything in between using Linux. That alone means that we have something in common.

      Given the amount of keyboard warriors the right has i'm sure some of them have taken the time out of their busy schedule arguing with people online to learn linux. But I would say the left probably has more linux users as most the tech savvy fields are in pretty left leaning area's.
      What I would be most interested in is seeing a libertarians perspective of free and open source software. Do they see it like taking a dump on the free market? Or a viable alternative, a instance of voting with your dollars per say.

    • @BlindRambler
      @BlindRambler 2 года назад +2

      @@TheChemisch I introduce you to one. It's funny how people assume that FOSS/FLOSS is primarily a left thing. I've rarely met a left leaning individual, well not left by today's terms. I would agree if we are talking about the traditional dynamics rather than today's. As far as today's norms, I'd say that the average lefty is on Mac and Windows. It really is about freedom and control.

    What I get from that part concerning that veganism is that if someone spends way too much time on the internet arguing about politics or whatever they start to get these trigger words that they only have to hear the word being said and they start acting like a robot immidiately. Like this person heard the word 'veganism' in a context that with a little bit of (intentional) misunderstanding could be seen as negative so they just lost their mind and turned into an internet bot.
    And in this comment section you see their counterbots, people trolling against veganism with quotes like "dat vegan needs a steak". So they fot triggered about a vegan apparently acting like a typical triggered vegan although his behavior wasn't even that bad or provocative: He was merely asking a question.
    But good for you for actively trying to stay as far as possible of these internet arguments I try to do the same but have the history of doing it and I fear it has permanately melted a part of my brain.

      and also in both cases (if you collapse veganism and vegetarianism into one spectrum), it's up to every vegan/vegetarian and every F/OSS enthusiast to choose whether and how they want to advocate, whether they should ever make exceptions in order to get along more smoothly with others, how strict their own adherence is, etc. There are harsh approaches and soft approaches, and different ones may be called for in different situations.
      You might get really worked up when you educate people about the practices of companies that do pharmaceutical testing on animals, but that doesn't mean you try to scream equally fiercely at grandma every year at the Thanksgiving table about the turkey she's eating. You might rant about the harms of spyware or the absurd DRM on John Deere tractors or the monopolistic practices of Microsoft or Apple, but that doesn't mean you tell your classmate he's a sucker rewarding bad behavior for buying Microsoft Office.
