Knew Knights in the Knightmare would win the moment I read the title. You can tell the devs started the process of game design with the idea of making the most complex system possible, asked every dev to come up with at least 3 ideas, and then made sure to incorporate every single one into the game.

I actually finished knights in the nightmare and didn't think it was too bad for me to e njoy (and I f inished it, and th en again for the true ending cuz I liked it enough, but the true ending is 'guide dang it' material.

Knew The Last Remnant and Resonance of Fate had to be mentioned 😂 The complexity of TLR is what got me to stop playing the game, and honestly, if it wasn’t for my brother explaining it to me (he never played it but saw me struggle with it and somehow understood the mechanics), then I never would’ve finished RoF. For me, it was when I got to this HUGE battle where I fought a huge fight outside a castle, then another huge fight in the castle, and at the end a boss fight (all with no save)…..and that boss used a move called “iron will” and proceeded to have like 10 straight attacks and wiped all my squads. Never touched it again after that….no way was I gonna do that whole fight again (took hella long to fight though all the BS before the boss)just to have the boss pull some BS cheesy move and kill my whole party(s). I loved the Last Remnant, both the OG and fixed version. I guess the machanics just clicked with me becuase they're actually really simple. It's more about how you visualize it. Yeah seeing it as controlling 15 characters is overwhelming. But if they're in 3 groups of 5, it's really just 3 "characters" with 5 actions they'll perform in a turn. And the random actions aren't really random, the choices you get are based on how you put together each group and then on how you play. 5 healers in a group will get lots of healing options, 5 mages lots of magic, if you pick melee attack a lot then you'll also get lots of melee attack options, 5 healers that you pick melee attack a lot with- well you got you're fighter/healer "character."
One last thing that tripped people up, is learning how to revive fallen groups, you need to buy consumables for abilities you don't have but want to learn. You need to use item healing to enough times to learn the revive skill but if you don't have the 2 consumable items in your inventory that you need to perform revive then you'll never learn the skill.

The last remnant needed to explain itself a bit better, there is a mini map in battles, so when you try to gang up on a target, if there is another in between they will get intercepted, but they didn't explain this well.
When it comes to not having direct control of what they do makes sense but again they did not explain. Essentially, you are the commander giving demands to your various unions or platoons, so it makes sense you do not control everyone individually, but only when you know this.
The think I was most confused about was your battle rank and stats level up differently and separately, it nearly made it impossible for me to progress at one point, but I ended up winning a really long battle only because in my unions, some members were killed, and as the unions HP is communal, AoE attacks hit less times and I could survive and ultimately win

But I soon realized if I didn’t make use of it, I’d have to rage quit from all the extra attacks the computer was doing to me. I had to replay battles a lot but I eventually beat it. Great vid. This could easily be a series as there is no shortage of overly complicated JRPGs out there. Most of these I've either played and agree with you, or intentionally avoided because I knew they were going to be obnoxious. TWEWY was fantastic, though.
Astral Chain flew under my radar and looks awesome. I will check that out. I liked Riviera but it stressed me with its missables. Yggdra Union was brutally hard and I tapped out early on. I bought the DS and PSP Knights in the Nightmare, but never opened either as I suspected the experience would be homework-y after the aforementioned St!ng offerings.
I think I mostly like uniqueness and complexity on paper, but not as much in practice. So I'll often buy these types of games because I want to reward developers brave enough to deviate from long-tired traditions, but too often they end up just not being all that fun to me unfortunately. I suspect if I was much smarter I'd probably get more out of them. :\

I loved Resonance of Fate. Young teenaged me got hold of its battle system really quickly, and I just took off with it. I loved the main trio, especially Leanne, and I always looked forward to the chapter cutscenes. I actually have a hard time empathizing with people who struggle with understanding the systems, because to me they appeared so very straightforward, dare I say even intuitive. About halfway through the game I was machinegun farming larger enemies, just for the fun of it. (That will make sense to anyone who remembers / understands the knockup, smackdown and bonus mechanics.)

It can make the game too easy at times, which made me appreciate the original versions complexity.
If you still end up not liking it after that, then I respect your opinion

The leveling system almost soft locked me from being able to progress on The Last Remnant. I shit you not, I had to send my save file to the, perhaps, most skilled player of this game EVER, in order for them to adjust my characters' skills and gear so that I could START GRINDING PROPERLY. After very dozens of painful hours, I managed to beat the game along with some very tough optional bosses.
Thank you, PinkPanther. At that time, I was in a very dark place in life, and beating this game was like my Moby Dick. Without your help, I wouldn't even be able to dream about beating it. You have no idea how much you helped me.

TWEWY was a great game with an interesting battle system. I also found there’s a steep learning curve, but once you get used to it you sorta get into this flow of bouncing back and forth from Neko and his partner that‘s pretty addictive. Also the pin evolution system helps gives some depth beyond conventional leveling (though the original DS version has some pins level up best or evolve by connecting wirelessly to other players which was very annoying).
The switch version includes the option of co-op where P1 controls Neko and P2 controls the partner, which makes it great for going through the story with a friend. Also, they added quality of life improvements like redoing the pin levelling system.
I think it’s natural that Erick wouldn’t like TWEWY’s battle system; it’s very experimental and sorta expects you get better on your own terms, which I understand puts off some people. TWEWY Neo has the great story and mechanics of the original game, but has a more conventional ARPG type of combat that effectively emulates the flow of the first game, if you looking for something similar but was put off by the combat.

Loved the game to death, but Legend of Mana's forging system in particular is the most "fuck you, good luck with that" gimmick I ever found in a RPG. Zero explanation about how it works, ends up being trial and error with dozens of materials, including VERY RARE ones. But at least it's not mandatory for completing the game's normal difficulty.

The Last Remnant is actually a favorite of mine for the unique combat system. It requires you to think about your unions/squads in a different way than you expect, though. While you manage each character individually out of combat, you need to always do so with an eye to what role they will play in their union and which of their abilities are going to match up with certain in-combat commands (which you can generally tell from the icon on the command).
Basically, you want to specialize each character. A union composed entirely of very well-rounded, balanced characters with broad arrays of abilities will usually perform poorly because 1) everyone is just middling at everything, and 2) it's unclear what each character will do for a given command. If you focus them instead, a couple specialists will usually perform better than a whole union of generalists, and you can focus the union on whatever its overall focus is. And you do have to focus each union on a specialty, too.
As for the morale bar, I never had any trouble with it. It does punish you for failing to engage the enemy at an advantage, but that's easier once you've started specializing your unions, that's not hard. Double-teaming an enemy right away with high-damage unions while a tanky union attracts attention is a great way to do it, and selecting commands that lean into a union's focus seems to give more morale benefit than normal, too.

The only one out of those I played for "longer" was Tokyo Twilight Ghost Hunters and man...doing those VN sections without a guide is near impossible, there are a tons of endings depending how you interact and who you take into battle with you and since this navigator dude is automatically in any of your battles (idk if you can switch him later, never made it that far) he also autmatically gets so many "affinity points" or however it works so you need to reaaaally know what you are doing to get the ending you want.
I also got frustrated with the combat after a while...not sure if I was too dumb for it but sometimes it felt like too much depended on rng, hoping the enemies would move to the right spots etc.

I actually loved Resonance of Fate. It has a terrible tutorial, though. Basically, use scratch damage to make enemies vulnerable, then use attack guns to kill them. You can move your characters with the “line” to make them flank enemies, do more damage from certain angle, or cross paths with eachother and boost abilities.
Knights in the Nightmare is very complex, and took me a long time to understand. It IS overly complicated. But I enjoyed it. You need to have knights who can basically break all the objects in the map, to recruit more soldiers. Knight have limited vitality, and affinity to blue and red phases. You can change the phase in battle, which powers up or weakens certain knights, so they can do certain affinity attacks. Yeah, it does sound dumb, and it is. But it clicked eventually , but wow

Vagrant Story is amazing! It is definitely complex though, but I think it is very rewarding. There are a lot of layers to the combat and crafting system, but once you start understanding how it all works, the game becomes much easier.
There was a great piece by Rob at Playstation Access not long ago, where he describes Vagrant Story as a difficult game to love, but if you put in the work, you will find a wonderful and masterfully crafted game with incredible storytelling, writing, atmosphere, and some of the greatest cinematics in gaming! Put another way, the game doesn't click with everyone, but for those it does, it clicks hard!
For me, its an undeniable masterpiece! Maybe once it gets its well overdue remake/remaster, with some QoL improvements, give it another shot. :)

I really wonder if there was a bugged version before they released a fixed version because in my first (and only) playthrough back in 98 or 99, whatever I did late in the game (equipping other weapons or forging one), I only did 1 point of damage to almost all enemies with physical attacks. I completed the game by performing combos with an almost perfect timing since every successful physical attack in a combo doubled my damage or something. So first attack I did 1, then 2, then 4, then 8, then 16... Maybe it was the effect of a skill I equipped. I beat the last boss like this too, that was such a slog... So yeah, either my version of the game was bugged or I REALLY didn't understand the system at all. It's amazing that I could still finish the game.

    • @Enharmony1625
      @Enharmony1625 Год назад

@@armorvil I've never heard of anything about a bugged version or update to the game, so I doubt it. I got the game on day-one, so I played it right on release. But I struggled as well on my first playthrough, but on subsequent playthroughs I was able to better understand the systems and how to properly craft gear. I replayed the game a few years ago actually and didn't have too many problems. If I recommend the game to anyone these days, I usually suggest they use a guide. It's one thing Square Enix could improve in a remake or remaster -- keep the complexity and depth, but make it a bit more approachable and not so obtuse.

You didn't even mention Last Remnant's biggest problem, that bing it's awful level scaling system, but maybe you didn't play far enough to even notice it was happening.
It's been a long time, so I don't remember the exact details of how it works, but basically the game tracks all the individual levels of your characters and lumps them into an aggregate total score, which it then scales enemies to. The problem with this is obviously if you allow some characters to fall behind, they end up getting one-shot by enemies, and they will only gain xp when alive, so it gets harder and harder to catch up groups that are trailing the leaders.
But the other thing that matters is characters stat growth is based on what skills they use, aka use magic and their magic gets stronger, use physical and that gets stronger, etc. If you screw this part up, your characters' actual stats will fall behind what they should be at a given level, as in a level 20 group that is weak as hell because of bad stat leveling compared to an optimized level 20 group whose stats are focused.
Finally the biggest problem with this: You can't even just play through at a low level, because bosses have a level floor, which they will not scale below, thus forcing you to level up, but those same bosses will still scale up if you're above that floor. And said bosses are balanced to require multiple groups engaging them at once, and if one or more of your groups are trailing in level/stats, they just get one-shot and makes the fight that much harder.
One of the best parts of the PC version was a mod that disables the level scaling, fixing enemy stats at whatever setting you install, so you can set them to their lowest scaling for an easy game, with a lot of options going up to the max possible scaling, and then several custom options boosting their stats up to 800% if you're really masochistic.
