This piece is meant to convey the spirit of the Spanish dance of the title and in her unique way de Larrocha provides an authentically Spanish flavour to the piece.
I had the pleasure of meeting this very great pianist many years ago when she came to play a concert at BYU, where I was enrolled as a student. She was absolutely gracious and a fine conversationalist. She had surprisingly small hands, but a great deal of flexibility in her thumbs, which allowed her to play anything she wanted.
Divine as this performance is, please listen to Dinu Lipatti's. It will blow your mind! Both have so much wonder and mystery to express in this stunning piece of music.
I intend to listen to EVERY upload on this channel, starting with the earliest uploads, and working towards the present time. I'm so thrilled to have found a You Tube channel devoted to this wonderful lady.
I heard Alicia de Larrocha play this piece in St. Louis sometime around 1977, and the piano she played did not cooperate very well. The G# key went down on the first of the repeated notes and apparently never came back up, at least not sufficiently for her to make the repeated notes speak. It was an awkward moment. Ruth Slenczynska was in the audience that night, and I remember wondering what she was thinking of de Larrocha's playing.
Anything Alicia played was to perfection, convincing you that it cannot, and should not, be played otherwise. Only once have I thought otherwise, with her Chopin Op.53 polonaise.

Excellent, of course, but frankly it sound a little cautious and a bit too sedate compared to Lipatti's stunning, virile, highly energetic ecstatic, free-spitted DEFINITIVE reading of the work.
One of the best versions!!! Finally a pianist who plays with the right accents! Flamencoooo! 💃❤
listen to Dinu Lipatti's version

This no dance at all... although it borrows some elements. Spanish flavor, of course is right.

An absolutely brilliant performance by master de Larrocha, of this ravishingly beautiful Ravel's piece.
wonderfully played, breathtaking! thanks for sharing this jewel!!😉
Insuperable Alicia
I love her playing - the best of the best
Quelle élégance et qu'elle lumière ! Merci.
Beautiful and impeccable...
Siempre la "quintaesencia"!!
She is the only person IMHO that ever played this correctly with the proper Spanish flare that Ravel intended.

Her live recording is one of the best I've heard...she sounds too cautious here..

Lipatti plays it like a race horse. I much prefer this recording with all the minute details and not to mention the controls of the trills she has .
They're both great in different ways. I find it invidious to compare them. Also her repeated notes are astonishing.
