I think iPad did well for a while, but it really isn’t an indispensable tool as it used to be. For digital artists, like myself, it’s still useful… but not necessary. We were holding on to the idea that one day the iPad would replace the laptop, but Apple clearly doesn’t want to create that competition between its own product lines. So I agree completely, iPad is not what it used to be and it definitely hasn’t become what we all wanted.

"the iPad would replace the laptop, but Apple clearly doesn’t want to create that competition between its own product lines."
Exactly. Apple wants to shift multiple hardware. The "Magic Keyboard" seems deliberately HEAVY. The video makes NO MENTION of the WEIGHT of the device being ultra portable and the need for a typecover + Full OS to then be a complete portable option.
Apple wants to sell: iPhone, iPad, Macbook and possibly Airpods and iWatch AND accessories.

Having music production as a hobby while not having enough time to get familiar with desktop DAWs (at least in short term), the iPad works wonders for me in terms of the intuitive touchscreen controls and high-quality DAW apps available.
As a side note, I'm really happy that Apple has shifted the purpose of the iPad from a primarily recreational device, to a somewhat more productivity-oriented one, but at the same time I really wish they hadn't limited the potentials of iPadOS for the sake of selling Macs.

I’m using a 9th generation iPad right now to view this RUclips video from the comfort of my easy chair! To me the iPad is still the ultimate in digital consumption. I use it to view videos; read & compose emails & texts; build my music playlists (which I then listen to on my iPhone); light gaming; reading books & magazines; and, of course, surfing the web. I even perform some light productivity on it like creating and editing family videos with iMovie. The only time I attach a keyboard/mouse to it is when I’m traveling. I then use it to log-in to my office PC via remote desktop. I don’t even own a laptop. So, for me at least, the iPad is still very relevant.

I had the original iPad in college and it was truly fantastic as a mobile device for taking notes and working around campus. It was much lighter than the 15” MacBook Pro, got good battery life, and was super useful with the Bluetooth keyboard case, and was way more capable than contemporary netbooks. I have been through many iPads since then and now use the 12.9” M1 iPad Pro with magic keyboard folio as my main mobile device. It’s truly great and super useful on the college campus where I now work. No, it’s not outdated. Having said that, I do totally agree with your criticisms of iPad OS. It really limits the capabilities of what is class leading hardware.

I use a Microsoft Surface as my computer (Usually docked) and as a media consumption device in tablet mode. This works well enough for me I no longer have an iPad. I think Apple should allow the M1 iPad to dual boot into iPad OS or Mac OS when docked. I think akin to that is one of the iPad's best features: Sidecar. Having a small secondary monitor is very productive for me.

There are two use cases that the Ipad works best for me. Content consumption and digital note taking and organization. It's not always convenient to take notes on a laptop and it is cumbersome on a phone. All of my periodicals are digital, and I read ebooks 90% of the time. Highlighting with the Kindle with the pencil and having notes download to Obsidian is a workflow I don't think I could have run as smoothly on any other device.

For me the iPad is still an excellent device. Most of the time when I'm mobile I don't need to do a lot of typing so the on-screen keyboard is fine, and I don't have a physical keyboard adding bulk and getting in the way. I also love the screen and like the size, and the Pencil (which I don't actually use much) is amazing! I use it far more than my phone, which I prefer to keep small - I currently use an iPhone 12 Mini and *HATE* that Apple keep pushing bigger phones!
Literally my only complaint about the iPad is the operating system, and Apple's refusal to let it be the laptop replacement so many of us are waiting for. Give it more RAM, better multitasking and a UI which supports it, and I'd be happy. It seems so strange to give the iPad an amazing CPU and then hamstring it so badly!

I still use my MacBook to create word docs, but that’s mostly because I haven’t gotten comfortable yet with the flow of using Word on the iPad.

As much as I like my iPad the only thing that is keeping from reverting to a MacBook is the iPad Pro's fantastic screen, and built-in cellular. Yes, yes, why not own both, but after spending so much on the iPad Pro with 16GB/1TB RAM/Magic Keyboard I find spending more $$$ is hard to justify. Maybe when my 2021 iPad Pro 12.9" gets dated I'll give the MacBooks another hard look.

For me it is indispensable at the moment. first, I do digital art and I love it on the iPad. Second, I recently started a youtube channel and Luma fusion handles 4K HDR videos of the iphone better than my Ryzen 7 PC, faster full quality editing as well as rendering. I know I am missing a whole lot of tools for prefessional editing and color correction but I don't need them just yet.
Another important thing for me is reading. I know there are Kindles out there but they are not as versatile as an ipad operating all types of file types as well as research tools and notetaking apps like notabilty. Add to all of that ease of use and portabilty.
something worth mentioning I am using an iPad Air 3 which is even far less capable than the current ipad 10.
I have a problem with treating the ipad like a computer or a PC. It is NOT and I know apple is marketing it as such and I think that is really hurting it. it is a device with a good margin of capabilities and tools and should be regarded as a tablet nothing more. once I put a keyboard and a mouse I should go buy a Macbook

It's not a must have but it is a great luxury item of convenience for sure.

I just came back from a month long vacation mostly WAY off the grid. The iPad use case is content consumption while on vacation. WAY better than travelling with my M1 MBAir. Not nearly as functional, but MUCH better for reading books, MUCH more "durable" (less fragile?) and easy to use on a bouncy train or bus, MUCH easier to have a pile of PDFs of documents you might need like guidebook excerpts. FABULOUS to show travelling companions today's pics, on a big enough screen to share, in a form factor that's easy to pass around. JUST AS GOOD to keep on top of e-mails, read the news, keep a (really low tech) spreadsheet of costs, take notes, store pics as backup (if you have a 256 Gb iPad). WAY WORSE at editing pics and DAM tasks (unless you JUST use the Photos app). WAY WORSE if (as you note) need to be in 2 or 3 apps at once. But beyond travel... I don't see any case where iPads >> M1 or M2 Macs, except digital artwork as you noted (love my Procreate).

My iPad was a game changer for me when I first bought it because of its portability which allowed me to carry all my school stuff with ease and not have to go into labs and clinics with a huge 15inch computer. However, ever since I upgraded to the 13" MacBook pro, I haven't felt as much of a need to carry it around anymore. I use it for programming high intensity interval training workouts and making RUclips videos with it. I haven’t done much else on it recently, but I have done video editing on that. Its the best portable device on it. I mainly use my 14” MacBook Pro for this, since I have premiere pro on it, which makes it easier to do, since I have more control over the videos. This year the iPad has become my go to textbook reader and it helps a lot that I can naturally highlight text, make notes beside paragraphs like I could with a physical book. Yes, All these things can be done with a 2 in 1 laptop also these days but I think the biggest thing the iPad has going for it is that it is much lighter and portable than laptops making me not have to always find a desk to study.

As a part time student working full time I have the luxury of having an iPad and MacBook Pro. I find my iPad Pro is the main device that I use for light computing. The interface is nicer and just to be able to immediately switch to hand holding for reading notes and pencil for jotting quick notes and doing active recall exercises. Especially if I am in the lounge or on the go. But I still find I need my MacBook with monitor for assignment writing or intensive tasks where I can have 5 different windows and 30 different tabs open at a time. The concept of two devices isn’t that uncommon though with many people having a desktop and a laptop or secondary device. It is certainly a luxury but there is value to be found especially with iCloud and the ecosystem making transitioning from one device to another near instant.

The iPad is so useful as a musician. I play for a number of ensembles and hauling different binders of music was always a nuisance. Plus the times we would perform outdoors there would always be wind to blow the music back and forth in the binder, so having a way to bring everything with me in one device that - by comparison to those binders/books - is rather light weight is wonderful. Plus I can see my notes and can duplicate pages to make my playing easier and the light of the tablet /white page on the display when playing helps visually when all the lights are dimmed for performances. Now it is a matter of curating all the music and keeping it organized in a filing system that lends itself to easy search/retrieval. But absolutely love it.

It is also handy to take with me to the coffee shop when I want to sip espresso and watch content, where it offers a bigger screen than my phone and weighs less and is more easily handled than my laptop, so it's a great device, but in hindsight, not worth several hundred dollars for what I use it for. Given the direction Apple seems to be going with the successor model (i.e. making it much more expensive), I can see myself holding onto this one for several years as long as the iPadOS updates keep coming.
In terms of usage on a typical day, the iPad probably gets more screen time than my phone and laptop combined, mainly for web browsing but also day-to-day tasks like banking, shopping, etc. but also for drawing (as a hobby) with the pencil. It complements a 13 mini and M1 MBA very nicely, and together these devices provide an affordable foothold in the Apple ecosystem.

I think for a lot of people, with how quickly technology has advanced over the last 15-20 years, let alone before the 2000s, there isn't much of a need to own so many different devices. These days, your phone acts as a computer, cell, streaming device, mp3 player, camera, flashlight, clock, etc. It can do it all. Why would we buy a device that does basically what a smartphone can already? The iPad has become more niche oriented over its lifespan which is very interesting. The big screen has its pros and cons, and I think portability in this day and age is a huge factor in someone deciding whether or not they'd find use in a device like the iPad. I personally have purchased the iPad 9 earlier this year (my first iPad ever) and it's worked great for viewing PDFs at work, reading emails, and watching youtube in bed. I don't use it for much else because my phone can do the rest. If you're like me and only plan to use the tablet for lighter loads, don't invest in a Pro or Air. Just stick with the mini or flagship.

I honestly bought the iPad Pro 5th gen 12.9 inch when it was released . I had all these grand ambitions of being some distinguished digital media creator , using the pen to make such detailed drawings and notes , and the keyboard to be this productive important man .
It literally sits in the box and has only been used for watching RUclips . Everything I need to do is on my pc and it really makes no sense as to why I even bought it

The drawback about judging the iPad as a work tool is ironically its modular nature. What works bad for some, works tremendously well for others, hence no review can be a one-size-fits-all, comprehensive take due to the multitude of use cases. I use it in healthcare for note taking, information-sharing, and staff management and it has absolutely changed the way I work. The whole “second brain” concept sees the iPad as a perfect fit for storing, reviewing, and refining information for, again, a multitude of use cases. Stage Manager and external monitor support has improved on this experience tremendously.

I never could get “into” Pads. I had my phone, usually a big Samsung, and PC laptop, for years a big clunky heavy thing I carried in my backpack. I couldn’t see the need for a 3rd device. Flash forward, I have my now big screen iPhone Pro Max and 16” MacBook 💻 M1… and, despite what many have said, my 16” MacBook is at least HALF as thick and lighter than the 15” PC I carried around for years. And now, with more than all-day battery 🔋 life, yup - still don’t need a Pad 😅

I think the ipad is perfect. It isn’t made to be nor was it ever intended as a full replacement for a computer. Okay, maybe with those confusing commercials sure. Most people don’t see it that way tho. I love my ipad pro with logitech keyboard case and trackpad. I have a mac mini with 16gb ram and large 4k display that I use at my desk, and my ipad I love to use on the go for school and content consumption. I have the 11 inch pro and I can easily still type papers, send emails, browse the web, or watch movies and shows. It fits perfectly in my bag when traveling and is easy to carry around as well while in airports if I don’t want in my bag. I don’t do any editing or anything like that, but I can easily review documents and do all I need and there are plenty of people like me. People that need a hardcore machine or need something powerful will buy a macbook as that is what they will need to optimize their work. The ipad is still the best mobile solution and is great for lots of people, like students, sales reps, kids, grandparents, or light consumers

Gigantic touchscreens just don't make sense. With the traditional approarches, you can well control everything on the screen with a touchpad or mouse by moving your hand only a little bit. Why spend the extra effort only to achieve the same tasks? There's no point getting an iPad besides drawing or handwritten notes yet those limited use cases in turn can't justify its crazy cost.

The iPad is also a good content consumption device-surfing the web, watching videos and reading ebooks. Most of the time when I use mine for content creation it’s to take notes in meetings, read and write emails, and write documents that I will probably fine-tune and format more completely on my MacBook. I suppose the one thing that my MacBook lacks that the iPad has is a touchscreen. So far as the cost, my iPad and Magic Keyboard are only a few hundred dollars less expensive than my laptop and might actually weigh a bit more-but that higher price point is what keeps me from carrying my MacBook to all the places that I take my iPad.

My 11" iPad Pro is my main computer, even when I was working as a network engineer, I used my iPad, I could almost do everything I needed from it to manage my systems. I am retired now and I fill my time with mobile Photography and Astrophotography. My wife and I do have a MacBook Pro, but it is rarely used, I use it mostly for heavy lifting so to speak for some of my Astrophotography projects, that are too big for my iPad Pro. I edit the majority of my photos on my iPad Pro, using Affinity Photo, Pixelmator photo, Light Room and Darkroom. I edit my videos using LumaFusion and even iMovie and those apps are just fine for the majority of people. I view the iPad as a computer for people who don't want to be stuck in the past, the first laptop that came out was in 1982, that's 40 years of computing the same old way, not growing. I want something new in computing and I find the iPad is a new way of computing, communicating, of content creation and consumption (as an aside I like Christopher Lawley's channel, in my opinion its informative and enjoyable and he does most of his work on the iPad). I like the mobility and the iPad and iPhone provide, I put my moment lens's in my sling bag along with my iPad Pro and I have a complete computing environment when I out and about. I stopped trying to compare iPadOS with MacOS a long time ago and am concentrating on keeping my computing environment simple and I think the iPad and iPadOS 16.2 with stage manager is just right. I feel in a sense we already have a Touch based MacOS, in iPadOS 16.2, and over time will only get better, MacOS has been out since 1999 and iPadOS pretty much since 2019, so give it time. In regard to form factor, I don't see where it can improve with the exception of moving the camera to a landscape position. However, in regard to form factor, I do like the iPad mini 6. If the iPad mini 6 could extend its desktop, have the same amount of memory and storage as a beefed up iPad Pro, then I would ditch my 11" iPad Pro for the mini 6. Other than that, I think comparing an iPad to or wanting it to be a laptop replacement is a waste of time. In my opinion the iPad or for that matter iPhone are truly what a personal computer and should be and I think grow as a personal computer. I do not think the iPad is obsolete, its just the beginning of something new.

I currently own an outdated PC, and just recently got a new 13 mini which I love and greatly in part to your channel. The camera system from the 12 pro max is plenty for what I will do with it. My debate now is whether to get an ipad (not the most expensive) for a portable note taking email device etc AND a mac mini M1 for my general use computing and to start playing with video editing for IG reels etc with final cut pro and some pic editing stuff or to just get by with an 11" iPad pro and let the Mac lineup play out a little longer with whatever the spring may bring. "For me" I wouldn't be lugging a laptop around so if I got lets say a macbook air it would just sit on my desk hooked up to monitor keyboard mouse etc. These decisions have become more over whelming as the technology has evolved. Really shouldn't be so simple. I'm just tired of Microsoft and the PC builder race and love the ecosystem with apple so much better and have missed it dearly the year I have been away.

The iPad has one other major benefit over my MacBook Air: Cellular connectivity. A few other benefits for me are the easy of use while traveling (much easier than a foldable laptop on a plane or in a car (where cellular matters too), some iOS apps that don't run under MacOS (fading if you have an Apple Silicon Mac), and usability for non-techies who barely understand how to use an iPhone and don't need the complexities of a desktop OS and file management.
I find the device is easier to carry and has superior battery life compared to my MacBook Air. It is my goto device to take to business meetings and then I can type or write (or both) my notes.

Just like how the Mac was in a funk around 5+ years ago (when they had that Mac Pro roundtable discussion), I think the iPad is in a similar funk now. Apple Silicon used to be the greatest strength of the iPad: it allowed it to be super fast and super thin while still maintaining incredible battery life. Now that macs have Apple Silicon, iPads suddenly lost that advantage.
I think given a few years things will shake out again and be a bit clearer. iPadOS 16 and Stage Manager, while really buggy and incomplete, at least shows some promise on how iPads can be taken further. And even as a 30-something year old, my iPad Air + Magic Keyboard is my preferred “main computer” - I only go to my Mac for specific work tasks which involve loads of crazy multi-tasking and programming. For everything else, I much prefer the simplicity of the iPad.

Normals just use one application at a time. In fact studies have shown that a majority of office workers for the most part live in one application full screen most of the work day. In fact the only other applications they use are IM/text, calendar, and eMail. That most of the time I have seen people again use only in full screen mode.
Once again another pundit missing the point of what normals use an iPad for. Especially us older normals that now have eyesight that is not as good as it use to be. A larger screen with KISS operation is what we are looking for.
Now I just purchased for content consumption an old 2017 12.9 inch iPad Pro with A10X Fusion chip FP32 768 GFLOPS, Retina Promotion display, TouchID which I like better than FaceID. Price for my 256GB WiFI was $ 449.00 (October 2022) on Amazon.
Along with the iPad Pro for my case/keyboard solution I purchased the LENRICH iPad pro 12.9 case with Keyboard 2017 2nd 2015 1st, 360 Rotatable Wireless Folio 180 Swivel Stand Hard Cover Auto Sleep Wake up Black. Reason I like a case like this over the Apple Magic Keyboard is that it can rotate/swivel and lay flat covering the keyboard while I use to read articles/magazines like a plain letter size piece of paper. Also if I wanted to use it with a third party pen in this mode.
Use my iPad Pro for content consumption. This size makes it great to read a book, and articles on the 12.9 inch screen. Almost the same as looking/reading a letter size piece of paper. That is what these old eyes where looking for.

I see many say they are mad that the iPad is not the laptop replacement they want from Apple but I would argue that I can already replace the MacBook for lots of people. Yes, you might be tempted to open more windows but that is not necessary. You can also easily use simple functions in apps and even use powerful creativity apps like Procreate, Affinity Designer 2, Adobe Photoshop, DaVinci Resolve, Octane X, Logic Pro, and Final Cut Pro on iPad. Even if you might argue that the iPad version lacks a lot of features, it is 100% usable in my opinion and if you are a starter, you will have no problem using the iPad!
I think many thought that Apple released keyboard and mouse support alongside their flagship Apple Magic Keyboard to replace a Mac but that is not their intention, you can tell by their Magnetic and easily detachable design. You are supposed to use the iPad as a tablet and when you get into pro apps like DaVinci Resolve, you slap it on the keyboard to get keyboard shortcuts or you can also use the keyboard to type up a Word document. But after that, you detach the keyboard and navigate iPadOS with your finger. This triple input method (touch, stylus, keyboard) is what Apple calls the versatility of the iPad, and trying to push the iPad more to the computer side is just not going to work.

I've been using a 9th gen iPad for the last year and as a student, it works great. BUT there's some things that bothers me a little bit: the aspect ratio, the system (not) optimization and the fact that I can't replace 100% my PC.
The 4:3 aspect ratio it's awful for productivity, specially if you're constantly writing and reading. The system hold back the power and, even though it's really built up for a mobile device, we need a better multitasking. And, last but not least, it SUCKS that I have to spend so much money with extra gadgets and IT CAN'T GET ALL THE WORK DONE, I can't write a whole essay on it because the mobile version of Microsoft Word or Google Docs it's not as good as the PC version.
I love the iPad, it's a great device for a daily use, but it seems like Apple don't want to make it perfect.
Not to be shady, BUT at this point, I'm thinking about trade iPad for a Galaxy Tab. It's cheaper, it comes with an original pen right out of the box, my cellphone it's a Galaxy, so I won't have any problem with the system and with the integration between the devices, and the main reason is the multitasking/PC replacement optimization.
And here's my suggestion: since you made this video, you should compare between Galaxy Tab and iPad, and give us your opinion on which device makes more sense today.
    I love your content, btw.

So I sold my iPad Pro and mini and I got a Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 Plus. I am greatly enjoying my time with the Samsung but it becomes apparent very quickly the things Apple just does really well. I still have some testing to do but as of now, I can't say which one I like more.

Outdated? I wouldnt say so. But stagnant and unappealing/not a growing user base, yes. It doesnt carve itself out a “must have” device.
Tablets in general serve that gap between a phone is too small, but i dont wanna bring out a laptop/sit at a computer. Its the “just right” device when on the go or productivity isnt the priority.
But thats it. Especially in the case of ipads, thats all it can be. So once ppl buy one ipad thats it, they often wont buy another. Since the ipad is just a glorified iphone, even if it breaks they have a “real” device to use in their phone or even computer so the desire to replace it is much lower. Ipads are a great secondary device, but they just dont serve any needs.
My point is that the device isnt outdated per se but while other devices can do its job better (as mentioned in the video) , its the inbetween experience that it has its niche. But that experience doesnt have to be the latest and greatest. And that is apples problem. Because if no one buys their new ones, the product line is just a money pit of development and manufacturing.
Ipad 9 is still a great choice for many ppl. And if youre not the category of video creators, digital artists, or note taking students, then the features of the air or pros are just luxuries that you can live without. Or if they’re that important older models are a far better value.
Overall the ipad is a good product that fills a void between a phone and a desktop experience, but that experience is so generic that the cheapest ipad or older midrange ones can service that need more than fine.
