As a New Zealander like him we were lucky to see him in shows like Outrageous Fortune where he kills it as a pair of twins: one a stoner and the other a lawyer.
Can't wait to see him act in something normal. Like he's just a normal dad with a teenage kid and they're arguing about ice cream. He'll probably be close to perfect, but part of me will still expect lasers from his eyes at any moment.
I don't think Homelander will be a threat in s3. The focus will be on Victoria and towards the end something will happen which will change the power dynamic back to Homelander. Atleast that's what I feel.
Homelander isn't even Evil Superman to me anymore. He is Homelander. It just so happens he has a similar style of outfit and powers to the man of steel. He is such a fantastic character.
in justice league, superman started killing everyone when they brought him back to life. even though it's a shitty movie, it shows what happens when someone with superpowers isn't raised right.
He is great as a kind of an antithesis to superman though. Representing the worst traits of humanity and brought up without the love and care that was afforded to clark kent. He is very much the anti superman. If superman is the best of us, homelander is the wordt of ud
Now he's just a puppy on a leash... I will miss the almighty Homelander who could kill anyone and no one would stand up against him. Still, it will be fun to see him dealing with everything now that he's being blackmailed.
It's extra-scary that he's menacing in a... pathetic way? Like a toddler with poor impulse control and fucked-up fixations. He's clingy and gullible and self-absorbed, but in a very vulnerable way, and the entire mix is so volatile it's just... terrifying.
The thing I like about the Characters is, that they aren’t too Cliche badass and edgy. Like when Butcher recruits two badasses in season one, they aren’t mean to the “New guy“ and he doesn’t have to proof himself to get accepted. MM and Frenchie are just genuinely nice to him, while still being effective killers and badasses.
They also don't fetishize butcher, they push butcher's edginess to a point where you clearly realize he's an asshole with emotional issues, but you still kinda root for him.
@@peterbedford449 well, this was explained in the wise crack video of the boys, but stormfront’s edginess is very much a purposeful persona she puts on in order to make herself attractive to people who are disgruntled with society and once she reels them in she feeds them her far right rhetoric as an answer to their grievances. Which, funnily enough, is pretty similar to how people get radicalized on RUclips.
@@2122Hellfire Ah yeah I don't just mean when she's acting though. I mean the whole secret nazi plotline I found to be pretty cliche. Especially when her true character is revealed and she just becomes out and out evil to all the other sups. She was just very angry evil person at that point. I think a better move from a character standpoint would have been to make her evil but to make her want to gain power or take over the superhero org, instead of turn all of America in to Nazi America. I just found that a bit much. It didn't really fit into one season in terms of time or pacing.
@@peterbedford449 I mean she only really lost her mind at the end when they revealed her to the public, which emotionally made sense cause that meant she was truly screwed. The rest of the time she was doing pretty much the goal of any Nazi, radicalize as many people as possible and hopefully start a fascist revolution. She was approaching this goal pretty intelligently by playing to Homelanders ego and hooking up with him because Homelander has a lot of trust among the American right who are going to be easier to radicalize. She has no real reason to take over vought when she has America’s sweetheart in her pocket.
Everyones raving about Antony Starr and while he is phenomenal, Karl Urban as Butcher just gives me Goosebumps that I've never felt before. Bot deserve so much praise for their presence on screen
I loved how butcher had a chance to see a bit of himself on homelander when he realized how his dad fucked him up and the main scientist dude did the same to Homelander. Shitty dads man
I disagree with the whole supe issue. If every supe was like Homelander, there would be no need to fear Homelander or for him to create such awe. Also you forgot Mesmer, a supe in season 1 that Butcher literally beat to death. So that variance of power level, is not new to season 2. In addition, the various levels of power between the supes is what keeps the show interesting and not just a "hey Kimiko or Starlight, can you go kill Homelander and lets call this a day" type thing. If all the supes on the show on the same or similar level of power, there would be no show, as there would be no threat.
It was an incredibly stupid nit pick he made. Every single comic ever has super hero’s with different durabilities, I didn’t even understand what he was talking about
@@TrueGamer22887 they did do a bad job of establishing different supes individual durabilities. They carry guns around as if half the characters aren't bulletproof
Your point is good, I think Cosmonaut may have been confused by how Stormfront was able to shrug bullets and force but could get a knife in the eye - which I chalk up to a) the eye being a vulnerable part of the body and b) her being extremely weathered post that fight.
Choppss the way you establish vulnerabilities is by seeing what Frenchie tries to do. He's the supe expert, if he tries guns on someone it means guns probably work on them.
i agree, you can't really tell how powerful is Stormfront when she shows up at the beginning but it is established through scenes in the show. Same with the Torch/Majorette guy, when they meet him in the flashback with Mellory, that guy doesn't look like a Homelander, he is pretty human.
Everyone rightfully praises anthony starrs acting, but I never see much praise for Karen Fakuhara. She has to act without speaking once, and her facial acting is fantastic throughout the entire show. Especaily the one scene with Frenchie after the prison stuff
For real. I only knew her from the sucide squad movie where she played Katana aka the quiet asian girl who fights. So not much different of a character at least in season one. But season two she honestly kinda blew me away especially with her facial expressions when she’s talking to her brother
The Supes are not monolithic. Their power levels and vulnerabilities differ from Supe to Supe. This was true in season 1. Not even Homelander knew Stormfront was bullet proof until he was lasering her chest so variation is obviously a part of this world and not the result of bad writing.
Exactly. The durability of supes varies a lot and is not always clear-cut. Like Homelander is damn near invincible, and while Stormfront was able to handle his laser vision, she wasn't really able to handle Ryan's, so clearly she's not as durable as Homelander probably is. It's also clear that some supes come out with rather shitty powers like The Deep, or have little to no super durability like Mesmer who was killed as easily as any normal human being could be.
@@machinelifeform5623 well Homelander really didn't go all out with her. Imo he can control it a bit. Like when he daydreams about lasering the crowd is a lot more powerful than him just taking out some people or using it on her. I don't think any supe including probably himself can take his or Ryans full powered lasers without getting mangled. Stormfront according to the comics is the second most powerful though so she could definitely take more than average
I'm gonna play devil's advocate here: holding Lamplighter at gunpoint makes sense, because it seemed like aside from his fire abilities, he was just a normal human with normal vulnerabilities. Contrast that with Translucent who had unbreakable skin in addition to his invisibility, and Stormfront who was basically Homelander with lightning powers. I never got the impression that ALL the members of the Seven were invulnerable, just certain members. That being said...yeah, them deciding to just kill all the supes with their weapons was really weird. Like, maybe they would've killed, say, A-Train, the Deep, or even Black Noir (assuming he's not like the comic's version), but there's no way in hell they would've killed Homelander. They've made it very clear since the beginning that Homelander has no known physical weaknesses, which is why up till now, they've always avoided him rather than confronting him directly. So yeah, that's a bit of a huge gaping plot-hole....unless, you know, Butcher and co. are just crazy/suicidal.
That’s how I always understood it. Not every superhero has the same powers. Maybe CVH doesn’t think they illustrate that well in the show? I thought it made sense, but maybe I watch and read too much superhero media 😆
I also agree, even tho it would be near impossible to shoot a-train, I think he would die from a gunshot, and it became a lot easier to kill the seven because Annie was there to tell them what each hero was suffering from and how to defeat them
I mean the way they take out “homelander” in the comic is literally having supes help weaken him and then shooting him, and they always could have tried to just attack the supes, but the plan has always been take down vought not just kill the supes becuase they’ll just make more, until they took Ryan and butcher wanted to help
I agree he's great, and I know we all rightfully love Antony Starr but also Karl Urban is just hilarious and underrated, he really should be considered A-list at this point but somehow isn't.
Id put him below Karl urban but absolutely. I love Frenchie. That scene in season 1 where he tells hughie about his abusive dad then just walks away is one of my favorite
ATTENTION BROTHER!!! I have two very very hot and big RUclipsr girlfriends who I show off (I smell like 100 de*d orangutans oh nooo)! Thank you for you attention, dear dude kid rhy
Garth ennis Has this running theme in his comics about turning completely disgusting characters into comedy relief. And i really love it each and every time! +spoilers+ Since stormfront came out alive and dismembered i'm kind of hoping some of that for season 3....
@momarist he DID retrieve the footage of what happened in that airplane which saved butcher's life in the end, but yeah i felt that the storyline with him and the church of the collective stuff didn't really pay off this season. Guess we'll see how we progresses in season 3!
Let's all admit that Frenchie and Kimiko had the best relationship. I like Hughie and Starlight but as for development and pacing, Frenchie and Kimiko take the cake. It's just so great and pure. Like he liked her so much that he wanted to learn how to understand her and in the end, she ended up teaching him. ARGH IT'S SO CUTE!!!
Frenchie and Kimiko are separately two of my favourite characters because of what they do to protect each other and their own backstories/actions in the show. And this is coming from a show thats character writing for its protagonists and antagonists is arguable the main reason it's so beloved by the fans. I would ship the two if Frenchie would grow to stop trying to "save" her and take their relationship at her pace. Admittedly, since she's mute that's hard to know but he seems to be getting better at that after the fail kiss in season 2. I'd be equally happy if they got together or remained friends, and it'll be interesting to see how both of their characters evolve to fit even closer into each others lives.
I want him to have someone that actually loves him. He's evil but he was born in a lab full of mad scientists. He has never experience true love. Give this man someone to love and let him sacrifice himself or some shit I don't know
I’d have to disagree that the Boys wouldn’t be able to defeat all the Supes. In season 1, there would be no way for them to do it. In season 2, the Boys have had way more interactions with the Seven. They’ve researched their enemies. I especially love how MM is going to use epinephrine to kill A Train, since he has heavy withdrawals and heart issues. It wasn’t out of nowhere. Also, Translucents super powers were literally invincibility, which was limited to him. I also like how Frenchie said that the weapons they’d use to kill Stormfront was a guesstimate. Kinda like when they made the bullet out of the same stuff Transluscents skin was made from.
Yeah I think the point was how much damage could we do if we Tried to kill the superheroes not that they would 100% be able to kill all the superheroes
Yeah that point he made was kinda dumb. What makes him assume that all supes have the same durability or strength Yes some can be held at gun point but you have to get creative with others that's just basic logic
They had some okay reasoning for a couple of them like you said, but then it gets to the elephant in the room… How do they kill Homelander? At that point in season 2, how would they even have conceived of a way to do that? Even if they murder all of the other ones, even a nuke wouldn’t have been able to do our star-spangled manchild in. Plothole so big it ruined the scene for me lol.
Gotta say, usually when there’s a scene dedicated to women empowerment, movies and tv shows etc all make it feel very forced but the scene in episode 8 was really well done. I mean the boys really couldn’t do anything there and the girls really carried, that’s good writing
@@filipmajewski8382 you can cut that "probably" if you ask me, Frenchie literally said "Girls do get it done huh?" in the same scene so yeah, thats what they where going for^^
"Girls get it done" beating the absolute shit out of Stormfront > Endgame's “Don't worry, she's got help” scene Also a cool call back to the comic, nice touch.
Endgame scene was super cringe, forced, contrived and made no sense. The chances of all the ladies suddenly showing up at the exact same place on the exact same time without any prompt while a war was going on and no other dude showed up to help is just statistically impossible. Cringe factor aside, you could tell that scene was made simply for cheap girl power points. While in the Boys, this scene made sense from a story and character point. It wasn't contrived, forced nor was it some impossible miracle that Maeve to suddenly be there.
yeah it was a cool callback but part of me is upset because the people who curbstomped stormfront were specifically an american, a british, a frenchman, and a russian taking down germany which is honestly really clever to me
There's a girl hero scene in Infinity War that works better than in Endgame, anyway. It's when Okoye and Black Widow are fighting hand to hand in Wakanda and Scarlet Witch gives them a much needed assist.
"it ruins the tension of a scene if i as a viewer am unsure of our protagonists chance of survival" to me not knowing makes the scene even more intense because i just dont know what might happen.
Also - thats kind of the point with supes. They're all different and cant be nailed down so these intelligence operatives as part of the boys need to find their secrets and weaknesses
Also why did their powers confuse him? they explained it. Stormfront was super strong because she was the first supe ever made so not all weapons work on her, translucent had carbon skin so bullets can't go through him and the fire dude (I don't remember his name) was just a normal guy that could manipulate fire with his lighter so that's why they could hold him at gun point in the hospital.
i feel like if the supe is not invulnerable, he would just be scared if someone pointed a gun at him. Or at least they would try to make it look like they're not scared, which would create a lot of tension in the scene.
I forget, did The Boys comic even have a Spiderman? I don’t think they did. They had a Batman/Ironman, all the X-men, a Teen Titans-esque group, etc. but I don’t remember a Spiderman
I liked Nathan Mitchel as Black Noir. He is pimped out the game. People praise the Camico lady for her face acting and mute stuff, but Nathan. He can't even use his face. And he is the best part of the show. By the way, by season two, Homelander has no fucking charisma. Either Anthony Stargirl is good at being a bad actor, or he is bad at being a good actor. He was the Game of Thrones of the Boys. Good at the beginning, but DOG SHIT at the end.
Short answer: Yes Obviously it's much slower than season 1, the characters do the same missions a lot of the time, GOT teleporting is there, and the supe invulnerability/writing is questionable, but I liked that it really focused on expanding the world more. In the same way that Castlevania gives equal time to its heroes and villains, the same occurs here. Sure, the stakes could have been higher to ramp up the story, but what we got definitely was enjoyable - ESPECIALLY that last episode.
Why exactly is it obvious that the 2nd season is slower? You can expand the world without it becoming slow. You can flesh out characters without it becoming slow. It often goes hand in hand but it is by no means necessary for a show to get slow to achieve the things you mentioned. I liked S2, but it had problems, there's nothing wrong about acknowleding them.
@@nolimit8787 Usually to expand on characters, you have to give them scenes that may take over scenes of plot progression. For example, if I want a character to show they can cook, I will have a scene of that that may have taken the place of expanding on how the villain is breaking another guy out of prison
@@upg5147 Yes I hear you, but if a scene doesn't progress the plot it doesn't automatically make it a slow scene. And an action scene doesn't automatically make a scene "not slow". There are many shows that don't or barely have any intense action scenes without ever becoming slow.
My biggest disappointment with S2 was that they didn't use, The Boys Are Back In Town. If they don't use it for S3 then they clearly have no business making shows
They just got to earn the right to use it, right? Like imagine they used the song for the S2 trailer and S2 was actually shit, now that would be terrible.
I've had this question casually in the back of my mind ever since I found out there is a most wanted list and with the exception of Osama Bin Laden for a long time the answer is almost always "no" and I find that utterly fascinating in this day and age
It's literally the first thing I noticed when I saw the kid for the first time after the trailer. My friend missed it too, I'm surprised so many people missed it. Oh well, still a great show!!
@@motyovszkimiklos7538 she was at the tower with stormfront when the nazi pics leaked. She probably just followed her to the fight with her super jumps.
"The comic is a little too edgy for me, and I really don't like when things are just edgy just for the sake of it, and when it happens in comics it makes me cringe more than usual, but I think the TV show has a pretty good balance of edginess." Totally agree - in fact, I agree with almost everything you said in the video, but this part got me. After watching season 1, I picked up the comic and I really wanted to like it, but nope! For me the show has just the right amount of edginess.
I was just disappointed when I found out the show is STILL based on a comic, like Kick-ass.... was really hoping for once someone came up with an original idea and created a show that would MAKE a good comic book. Especially considering the heroes themselves are a parody of Justice League.
@@nahor88 mate, I’ve read The Boys and it is an edgy, occasionally beautiful dumpster fire of a series. EVERYTHING from season 1 and 2 were completely new and original to the comics, minus the pilot. The show is taking the comic’s good ideas and fleshing them out that wasn’t explored before and I’m all here for it.
While,Anthony Starr and Karl Urban are the MVPs of the show EVERYONE in the show is perfectly casted and so well written. Stormfront and Black Noir in particular were a huge suprise this season. Also, give the kid who played the son a damn medal. As far as child actors go, he was GREAT. The only thing I was disapointed by tho was how they treated Lamplighter. He was shaping up to be a pretty interesting character and they even hired a very good actor to play him(Iceman ironically) but he's in the show for a total of 30 minutes, if even that
Eric Kripke actually mentioned in an interview that the casting was made after the second season was written and he also really regretted killing off lamp-lighter. Still plenty of potential for them to go the route he did in the comics though but I personally think they're going to use Stormfront for that.
Regarding them holding supes at gun point now, you're forgetting about that classy mensroom meet with Butcher and Mesmer? They're not built equally. The series does have a bit Dragon Ball, "power-levels are bs" syndrome, but it's not that heavy.
Wait didn’t the acid spitting guy kill himself due to his skin not being invulnerable ? So it was established that some supes have different rates of vulnerability like in the case of lamplighter igniting himself but I guess I was watching another show .
or take Mesmer from S1, Butcher just beat him to death with his bare hands. Or take Doppelgänger or Blindspot or Kimiko and her Brother, they can all be injured/killed just like any other normal human, just in Kimikos Case she instantly regens it. So yeah, a pretty bad point on Marcus Part here honestly.
I think that’s the point they’ve been trying to make with experimenting with Compound V, everyone’s body reacts to it differently. You can end up with a Stormfront or Homelander who are basically gods or Mesmer or any of the other D-list heroes that aren’t part of the 7 who can be killed like regular people. That was the whole point of experimenting at Sage Grove, so they can keep testing for invulnerable heroes and weed out the ones that would die instantly.
Yes and there's even tiers of how tough your skin can get, there's Translucent and homelander whose skin are basicall indestructible. Then there's Starlight whose skin can stop a 50. but it can be cut.
Not to mention that characters having different strenghts, power levels and vulnerabilities/weaknesses is how it works in pretty much every super-hero universe ever written. I mean there's plenty of X-men a sniper could take out...and then there's Wolverine. This is not a valid criticism of the show.
Personally for me, the season 2 ending was so hype and intense, that I legitimately was jumping out of my seat. The ending really made the season for me.
Yeah I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed the symbolism of their relationship. I also like that Stormfront was kind of a feminist. Too often, shows just have generally woke or generally bigoted characters but here they show that being somewhat progressive in one area doesn't necessarily mean you're gonna have an enlightened perspective on everything. My only complaint from a social commentary perspective is that I dislike how they're building up the CIA as allies in the fight against Vought when Vought's sins seem pretty similar to a lot of the stuff the CIA has done in real life.
@@2122Hellfire Well, I mean, at the end of the day is an american show. They aren't really going to go against the CIA or government in any meaningful way. Use the supes as a metaphor of how power corrupts is one thing because supes are not real, implement the idea that the powers in America are inherently flawed is another.
Said the guy with a Communist shirt, the ideology that killed 100,000,000 people in one century alone and no, I am not defending white supremacists. Come on now guys, try and find him excuses. I am waiting.

Antony Starr and Karl Urban are the best things in this show. Their performances are fantastic In this season in particular though, Aya Cash as Stormfront CRUSHED that role. Where Antony Starr makes me scared of Homelander, Cash made me downright HATE Stormfront. She was amazing
“...Just wrap up and not necessitate a second season. Because that’s just not how TV works nowadays.” I’m sorry, am I missing something or can someone remind me of the period in time when television wasn’t created with the intention of existing over multiple seasons? If anything, the current era features seasons that are DRASTICALLY reduced and much more succinct. Major dramas used to span multiple seasons of 20+ episodes. I don’t disagree with the rest of the commentary but I was genuinely bewildered by this statement.
yeah there's alot more for the story that needs to be told, anyone can tell after watching the first season, and who refuses more good tv? lmao this guy has some dumb ideas he just popped in my recommendations, I understand his points in the rest of the video but this was straight up nonsense
X-Files had like over 10 seasons and so did a few other tv shows but they were episodic and not serialized. I think many good shows with high concepts don't normally need 10 seasons to tell a really high concept and nuanced story (which is funny because Naruto and Bleach are high concept and fucking had over 10 seasons and were completely terrible most of the time). Sometimes all you need is to tell a great story, give us some meat, and conclude it within 5 seasons or something but many shows have gone beyond 8 seasons and God knows why. There have been shows too that have slowly lost budget over time but keep cranking out more episodes. The Walking dead for example, had a decreased budget between season 2 and season 4. Supernatural had a decreased budget between season 2 and season 5, when it officially ended, and then it got a revival (this ones an exception). I hope The Boys finds its end soon. I'd hate for it to just become a serialized show about generic tropes and blatant corporate marketing.
@@daoyang223 We can't expect that every show follows an episodic formula, that really only works with procedurals with a really basic plot (cops, FBI, doctors) and then relies on its characters, writing, and action to maintain an audience. A show with plots and themes like The Boys could never work on this level, and a longer overall narrative is what keeps people entertained in the story for the small number of episodes each season. I do agree that too many shows continue far past the jumping-the-shark point, and I hope The Boys ends whenever the fuck they want cause I don't predict the writing will ever be bad, but with solid pacing until the very end.
@@spenny2cents i think he just controls fire not emit it from himself. Hence why he carried the torch and later on the lighter. He needs a fire source to control. So his body is just normal and not resistant to it.
4:59 I actually enjoy it if I am unsure of a character’s survival. I think what you were meant to say is that it is difficult to feel tension if the logic is confusing.
There's edgy for the sake of edge and then there's an actually dark and disturbing thing serving plot purposes or making a good point. The airplane scene is arguably the most important thing that happened in the series.
“It ruins the tension because I as a viewer am unsure of the protagonist’s survival” I guess I understand what your trying to say but that was a weird way to say it nonetheless. I think it’s meant to be vague and you’re not supposed to know what could kill a supe because most of the time the Boys don’t know what can. So them holding guns and shooting them works in the way that it tells the audience “this one can die to bullets” and “this one can get shot”.
Mike Coxlong To me a fight can’t have much tension if you don’t know how powerful each person is. The boys vs Stormfront is super tense because u know the odds are stacked against the boys. If you didn’t know how powerful Stormfront was then it wouldn’t be nearly as tense and you wouldn’t fear for everyone’s life
Aidan Kahlert Aidan Kahlert that’s a fair take but the entire premise of most of the action in the show is fights how the odds are against the boys and the ways they get out of getting absolutely destroyed. The real problem with this season is how they seemed to luck out of most fights without really having to think of any clever ways to win like translucent last season. They just get saved by Maeve blackmailing someone of Edgar calling them off. Marcus addresses this, but idk if he really understands that it’s only natural for the boys to throw everything they have at a supe before coming up with their lightning in a bottle solution. So the shooting them with the gun/ holding them at gunpoint thing isn’t really a problem especially if the supe reacts i.e. lamplighter hesitating when Frenchie pulls a gun on him. That tells both the boys and the audience that they are as vulnerable as a human is. The stormfront fight works the same way. Before then idk if she was ever shot so the audience didn’t know just how powerful she was.
@@marichatismynameandladynoi1990 but why is that a problem? Why the hell wouldnt it be inconsistent, since V gives everyone vastly different Powers anyway. If you ask me it would make make much less sense if everyone had the same powers/powerlevel, not to mention how much more boring that would be
AT LEAST! I personally loved season 2 much more than season 1, and find myself rewatching for specific moments from that season. To be fair, season 1 is incredible and I rewatch a lot of parts from that too, but to a lesser degree. The action scenes in S2 episodes 3, 6, 7, and 8 are insanely wild and just build on the ridiculous gore of season 1.
Honestly, id give it a 5/10 max... I hated all the blackmailGetOutOfJail cards and they went full circle in the end and have undone almost anything that happened in both seasons. Like everyone knows that starlight is a traitor but shes still in the seven? Thats really crappy writing imo and im not sure if ill watch season 3 again, even though i loved season 1
Honestly, the show is shaping up to be better than the comic by leagues. I like how they’re deconstructing Butcher and Homelander’s worldviews and really bringing that to the forefront. I think Butcher’s arc is likely to be far more interesting than his arc in the comics
I mean in the comics, Billy was a fucking ASSHOLE, hardly a good guy (if you even call the boys that). In the show, he's a person driven by the same reasons as the comic, but he's not a complete dick head. I mean he is, but there's more reasoning behind it. He wants to stay focused. And he actually has heart to heart moments with his team/friends.
@@montoseblack2901 YES! I was not a Billy Butcher fan in the comics, he was a straight arse. I do think that the show hasn’t fully developed Mother’s Milk just yet, he still feels like a side character. I smell bigger things for him in season 3!
Pretty sure Eric Kripke said that they were exploring "toxic masculinity" this season which is most likely why Butcher, Homelander, and The Deep had their arcs play out the way they did
Yeah, the Butcher arc in the comics was not very good. His motivations were never clear and the role Hughie plays in the whole thing is VERY passive (considering that he is arguably the main character).
When you discussed the part where they start planning on killing everyone, you leave out the crucial detail that they know those heroes weaknesses from past experience or information they had received earlier. It's only established that they know how to kill three supes too, it's only Stormfront, A-Train, and Black Noir. They would have to go through the same process that they did for Translucent had they not received that information. The supes are definitely still a very large threat at that point and to me still felt incredibly powerful.
Yea I have to say her potential as a character/villain is gonna make stormfront look like a sidekick. I really didn't have a problem with season 2 but apparently a lot of people did. But the finale was better than anything from season 1. I think people are worried about this show getting the GoT season 8 treatment.
@@rhey81 it was more of a problem with the pacing and what the characters were doing that it wasn't too engaging but overall it was a good season. I think the problem with Stormfront was that "nazi villain" trope is too overdone and boring for a show with a complex villain like Homelander
Anthony Starr as Homelander was absolutely phenomenal, and totally carried the show. Honestly kinda felt for him at the end, despite all the atrocities he’s committed. The show is miles better than the comic in almost every way. Though that’s not exactly a high bar to pass. Really looking forward to that upcoming Invincible Series.
Well, hence why it makes such a great show! And they have an end point in mind, since the comic has finished, so they can make whatever changes they want and still have an idea of where to head. Feels kind of like Avatar the last air bender in that way, to me.
The comic is fine for what it is, but it's really just Garth Ennis doing the same "grotesque-rubbing-society's-flaws-in-your-face" thing he did with Preacher, only without Preacher's occasional humanizing moments. The show does a much better job of giving each character real compelling traits.
Travis Himebaugh The Boys comic really is just Garth Ennis being Garth Ennis, and there’s nothing wrong with that at all. The thing with the comic is that every point it tried to make was already done before in prior comics, and almost all of those prior comics did it better. That’s part of why I’m so excited to see how the Invincible Animated Series turns out. Though I do admit, slogging through the comic is worth it for that final arc.
I think Compound V effects people differently, though similarly sometimes. Ex: Kimiko is strong as agile like Black Noir, but she has super healing even better than his while Noir is just tougher in general
I disagree with the power level stuff. Like the shape shifter guy and mind reader guy weren't invincible. Neither was kimiko brother. I just figured lamplighter wasn't "durable". Was nice that u got that info without exposition and just by Frenchie pointing a gun at him and the context of their shared past and knowledge of eachother.
I don’t get how some people were surprised that Lamplighter burned himself alive. It’s not like he produces the fire directly from his body, he either has his torch or the small lighter. Pretty obvious his ability is to control fire, not produce it or be immune.
@@jasonf7072 Personally, I just think it’s dumb when someone isn’t immune to their own powers, like Lamp Lighter and that one guy with acid spit, both dying to their own powers. Especially for Lamp Lighter, it kind of makes me question how he got on the Seven and considered a top tier hero if his only power was pyrokinesis without at least being fireproof himself, and no other attribute.
@@sharkesharke3973 Well the seven aren't the strongest heroes per se. I just assumed that lamplighter was in because his powers are really flashy and exiting, or marketing needed him to fill some sort of role similar to the deep. If they take deep because of the ocean theme they might also have taken Lamplighter because firepowers polled really well.
@@sharkesharke3973 Ever seen Avatar ? They bend elements but are not immune to them. The deep talks to fish and you’re surprised that someone who can burn people alive is in The Seven ?

I don’t get why you think the show should only last one season, when the comic storyline is like 65 issues longer, but your annoyed that civil war was shorter than the actual comic book storyline, like make up your mind dude 😂😂
What bothers me about Becca escaping from the fake neighborhood with no explanation the most is that in an earlier episode her and Butcher come up with a plan to escape with Ryan from the fake neighborhood and it would have been a nice call back to see her use that plan to escape in the finale.
He’s saying he’s not even sure if they’re likely to survive or unlikely to survive. If you think they’re unlikely to survive, you’re right, it is good for the tension. But if you don’t know if what they’re doing is dangerous or if it’s mundane, it takes away from the tension.
What I think he's trying to say is that the durability of the supes is seemingly random, so it is weird for the viewer to know if their civilian guns and punches work
@@overtone55 Regarding the random levels of invulnerability, I don’t understand how this confuses people. This is not a new concept in superheroes. Spider-Man is not bullet proof like Superman. In The Boys, characters like Mesmer and Lamplighter wouldn’t be losers if they were just as invulnerable as Translucent or Homelander.
@@overtone55 well keep in mind they had experience with Lamplighter, which is the example that was given, so they probably knew he wasn't super durable.
Yes the writing is somewhat not always the best, but the characterization is far far better. I feel a connect with almost all the characters, that is a tough thing to pull of. This season is on par with the first.
homelander, butcher, MM, Frenchie, Hughie, and tbh majority of the cast are so damn good and lovable in their own ways. my rising star of the show was MM. the way he protects hughie in situations from butcher or just talking to him was the most human/relatable bits of the show that made the world feel real.
I definitely think this season prioritized character interaction and development in return for the uniqueness of the scenarios and situations they were put in season 1. Which isn't a bad thing. But I wish we could have both. At the end of the day though both seasons did something better than the other.
I agree completely, there was a lot more edge for the sake of edge without furthering the story. The first third and last third of season 2 were pretty damn enjoyable but I absolutely hated the middle third.
Ryan Perez yeah, 1 and 2 I liked, 3-5 I didn’t, and 6-8 I really enjoyed. The scene with doppelgänger in the cabin I think was too much because it’s just showing what we already know over and over with the exception of the last bit where it shows a change in homelanders character. Another example is when they have lamplighter and they’re just watching porn talking. I know it’s in the later episodes I said I liked but it seemed to just serve no purpose because we already knew lamplighter was an asshole
@Forrest Carvalho I was asking if Stormfront's being a Nazi and that actually effecting the story was what he was upset about. I know that sounds stupid, but you's be surprised how many closeted neo-Nazis this show pissed off by including and focusing on her racism. And ps, her actor is the opposite of a Nazi, a Jew.
No Body no, not that. The biggest thing I actually like about the show is the commentary on real world current events like stormfront being a nazi for instance and her consequentially getting merc’d because of it. What bothered me is the smaller stuff that just didn’t seem to service the plot because we already knew what those scenes were trying to reinforce. The examples of such I mentioned in another comment hope that helps :)
My biggest complaint with season 2 is that you don’t feel much urgency or a need to watch every second in the first half. It wasn’t until ep 5 or 6 until I was more hooked and felt more stakes & understood the plot a lot more
I love Homelander. He is an evil piece of shit but feels like a real person. He kills whomever he wants and shows no mercy to the criminals he doesn't have to kill. He is sociopathic and has his weaknesses and insecurities and is a layered character. His backstory is interesting. He isn't just an evil poster boy. I knew he was bad and fake when he first showed up and threw that guy onto the car and showed no emotion and acts all nonchalant. I like how he is fake but we get to see the real him. Because being fake implies there is something else behind that and the show understands this.
everything about this season was so good, relatable, and exciting making your eyes glued to the screen. And every single ones storyline is worth it and ties in perfectly together. And i especially love that the deep is treated like a joke like aquaman is lol. But like damn there is a little to much blackmailing and backstabbing.
Fully agree. Season 1 felt like it was the world vs the boys, with Vought being exposed in S2, there was definitely less tension. Alot more plot armour in S2 also, Stormfront could of easily killed Hughie, Frenchie and MM in the finale but didn't, not sure why. Maeve showed up conviniently like 3 times to save the day? Finale was definitely the best episode of s2 though. S2 also had amazing new characters with Edgar, Neuman, Stormfront etc
Stormfront mentions a few times that she likes to the see the light go out in the eyes of the people she kills, so I assumed she was walking up to them to toy with them before killing them
She likes to see the light go out (she said it twice since her debut), so I can see why she wouldn’t kill them immediately. And Maeve showed up twice, and both times were believable. There were big fights and yelling going on both times, and being a supe in a quiet forest, she could definitely be able to locate where to find them.
@@MrJTH1999 I am against the notion that something new can’t be timeless or worthy of GOAT status. I personally don’t agree that Anthony Starr is the best acted villain of all time, but he sure as hell has a good case for it.
I feel like season 1 was a 9/10. While season 2 was more of an 8 out of 10. If the first half of season 2 was better I think it would have been just as good as season 1.
The problem with the heroes powers is not something I find weird, some heroes are stronger than others dude, and only the 7 and some others are really hard to kill.
Overall, I actually liked season 2 better than season 1 because of how many incredible character moments there were that they built up and paid off in such satisfying and well-written ways (Girls Get It Done being a personal favorite of mine). I do agree that the pacing was a little iffy at times (the release schedule might play a factor in this), the plot armor was a bit thick, and they do need to do a better job establishing the Supes' abilities and weaknesses in season 3; however, it all came down to the finale for me, and 2x08 checked infinitely more boxes character- and plot-wise than season 1's ending did in my opinion. Again, I'm going off of how much I enjoyed each season vs. the ~quality~ of the seasons, themselves, but both seasons are exceptionally strong -- and leaps and bounds better than most of what we're seeing on tv these days. It's easily going in my all-time favorite shows list if this trajectory holds.
Yes it was. Obviously, there were a few problems. But I'm sick of people saying how horrible the show has become because of such minor problems. When you expect absolute positive perfection that only fits in with what only YOU want, you'll only live life disappointed.
this, i thought it was different because it focused on bulding more on the characters of the show, sure it has some issues, but all the character development, acting (specially Urban's and Starr's) and social commentary (i kid you not, a few hours after watching the finale, a group of people in my country rioted while shouting "long live Hitler", making Stormfront's statement frighteningly accurate), more than make up for all of them, and definetly puts this season on par with the last.
You’re welcome to believe whatever you want to believe. But using the words “minor problems” doesn’t help your point. In the case of someone like Cosmo, he reviews movies and TV professionally. He uninteionally is going to look into the small things. He can’t just turn it off.
@@sterlingwesson He made two pretty bad points on the characters survivability chance being unknown, which would suck if we already know whether theyll live or not, and the durability of supes ranging differently although it is pretty easy to know which supes might be bulletproof.
My take was the bullets did hit stormfront and maybe hurt her a little, but as we saw, she has super healing and a high pain tolerance. The knife to the eye is a vulnerable organ, but it still didnt actually seem to hurt her all that much. She wasnt incapacitated by it if I remember correctly. but yea the first save from maeve was understandable as she probably heard the commotion and wanted to see what was going on. but the second? they shouldve had starlight tell her the plan to rescue homelanders kid and then have her reject it. This way when maeve has a change of heart, she knows where the fight is going down and can show up.
The internal organs of (Physically powerful) supes has been shown repeatedly to not be as powerful as their outsides: Stormfront got her eye pierced by a knife, Black Noir has a fucking nut allergy that wasn't even remotely alleviated by his super strength/durability, Translucent was killed by a bomb exploding inside of him, Popclaw was killed by a heroin overdose despite being strong enough to accidentally blow up her landlord's head, etc.
We also get more character development, bigger storylines, new and interesting additions like Stormfront, Edgar, Neuman and the church of the collective. I honestly don't understand how some people could say season 1 was better
While there are a bigger number of small plot holes and whatnot in the season, I think the plot moved at a much more incredible pace, the whole idea and themes of this season were just so much more gripping and relavent to me compared to the first seasons "hughie wants revenge" I am actually SHOCKED that you felt this season slow. I found the first season boring at times, and I thought this season moved at a break neck pace.
I have almost never been more horrified watching anything than I was when Homelander was angry or intimidating another character. The performance from Anthony Star's eyes alone fills me with terror as Homelander. His character is scarier than some entire horror movies.
Too be honest, would you be able to see any of most wanted people if you walked the street? I think people put to much thought into this. Most people don’t even know who the top 10 most wanted people are, and this is in a world where Sups doesn’t exists. Now imagine a world with sups, why would you care what a wanted person looked like, the sups will get them anyways.
@@ManUtdBoy13 Still, Vaught has a whole surveillance team monitoring street camera, partnerships with politicians and police. It just would've been nice to see more effort put in that aspect.
Not to mention that A-Train found Hughie and Annie in the finale after like 30 minutes of running around. Because he could have done that to find the boys this entire time, apparently, and just...didn't?
Anthony Starr was way too good in this show for him to be just a somewhat obscure actor. This man killed it as homelander
He's incredible in Banshee too, highly recommend that
Also Banshee
As a New Zealander like him we were lucky to see him in shows like Outrageous Fortune where he kills it as a pair of twins: one a stoner and the other a lawyer.

Yea, between him and Omni-man it really seems like the best way to do an "evil Superman" plotline is to not use Superman
in justice league, superman started killing everyone when they brought him back to life. even though it's a shitty movie, it shows what happens when someone with superpowers isn't raised right.
He is great as a kind of an antithesis to superman though. Representing the worst traits of humanity and brought up without the love and care that was afforded to clark kent. He is very much the anti superman. If superman is the best of us, homelander is the wordt of ud
There are Batman fans who want Superman to become Homelander so they can have him as a villain for Batman.
Homelander is like the lovechild of Superman, Captain America and Pagan Min from Far Cry 4
Antony Starr AKA Homerlander is the best thing of the show, he's so terrifying and I love him, we need more of this man
Seen him first in Banshee and he was awesome in that too!
His resting expression is perfect. You can never tell if he's smiling or plotting to kill to someone.
Terrific actor
I agree with what you are saying but stormfront is more cliche edgy. At least more so than any character in season 1.
Bot deserve so much praise for their presence on screen
yes, came here to say the same. such great performances from both
Every actor in this show is amazing in their role. Great casting by the crew.
I loved how butcher had a chance to see a bit of himself on homelander when he realized how his dad fucked him up and the main scientist dude did the same to Homelander. Shitty dads man
Butchers eyes when his wife dies.. thats acting nirvana man
Frenchie is my most favorite character of the show. Homelander comes 2nd.
@fiddle wait she plays fucking glimmer?! Had no idea lol
For real. I only knew her from the sucide squad movie where she played Katana aka the quiet asian girl who fights. So not much different of a character at least in season one. But season two she honestly kinda blew me away especially with her facial expressions when she’s talking to her brother
Agreed! Her going from a scared girl to a powerhouse is amazing. Plus she's obviously very beautiful.
jeeri stueo I always forget she's Glimmer
@God Almighty aww, who's an edgy boy? You are! Yes you are!
The Supes are not monolithic. Their power levels and vulnerabilities differ from Supe to Supe. This was true in season 1. Not even Homelander knew Stormfront was bullet proof until he was lasering her chest so variation is obviously a part of this world and not the result of bad writing.
Thats what im saying
I agree, though I do wish some of the supes had a better established level of durability.
Yeah, that took me out of the review right there. Not sure how he didn’t realize that
the virgin “she’s got help” scene vs the chad “girls get it done” scene
LMAOOOO
yup
Pretty much.
Now.. THAT is how you do the girl power moment
Exactly what I was thinking. Every character in that scene had a reason to be there.
@@KatieLHall-fy1hw Naw I'm with you. I think it made sense
@@goman3696 naw he wouldn't die from a gunshot because he literally ran through someone which means he has some amount of super durability.

Plus now they had Starlight and Kimiko who are also supes
Yeah I think the point was how much damage could we do if we Tried to kill the superheroes not that they would 100% be able to kill all the superheroes
Yeah that point he made was kinda dumb.
What makes him assume that all supes have the same durability or strength
Yes some can be held at gun point but you have to get creative with others that's just basic logic
Also a cool call back to the comic, nice touch.

@@pizza6464 Lets not forget the fact that Captain Marvel didn't even need any help in that situation.
yeah it was a cool callback but part of me is upset because the people who curbstomped stormfront were specifically an american, a british, a frenchman, and a russian taking down germany which is honestly really clever to me
There's a girl hero scene in Infinity War that works better than in Endgame, anyway.
Definitely agreeing with you on this one, Judge!
Also - thats kind of the point with supes. They're all different and cant be nailed down so these intelligence operatives as part of the boys need to find their secrets and weaknesses
exactly, even in scenes that were calm, I was always scared someones head would just pop.

And he is the best part of the show. By the way, by season two, Homelander has no fucking charisma. Either Anthony Stargirl is good at being a bad actor, or he is bad at being a good actor. Hey everyone in the comments,
You guys are the real heroes.
This comment had me screaming

:(
No,please...you....you are the real hero
Shut up
Short answer: Yes
Obviously it's much slower than season 1, the characters do the same missions a lot of the time, GOT teleporting is there, and the supe invulnerability/writing is questionable, but I liked that it really focused on expanding the world more. In the same way that Castlevania gives equal time to its heroes and villains, the same occurs here. Sure, the stakes could have been higher to ramp up the story, but what we got definitely was enjoyable - ESPECIALLY that last episode.
Agree. It was very good. Different, but built up the story really well
Agreed

Stormfront and Black Noir in particular were a huge suprise this season.
Also, give the kid who played the son a damn medal. As far as child actors go, he was GREAT.

Being physically tough is an unusual power gained from compound 5.

Best part about this season was probably the social commentary. The American exceptionalism having sex with the white supremacist fascism was great
Couldn't have put it better myself.

Henry Hooper still, I think it’s good to establish the powers before the fight, not during
I think he mans it’s inconsistent as some sups die from guns and others don’t feel a thing

What did you absolutely hate? The fact that a Nazi is portrayed as a Nazi?
What did to hate exactly and what episodes would those be? Like 3-6?
It wasn’t until ep 5 or 6 until I was more hooked and felt more stakes & understood the plot a lot more
Anthony Starr can definitely nail it as Albert Wesker. He already looks like him!
That's a good point. Didn't even think of that.
no wesker is so serious reverse flash fits him well
Umm yeah and also it’s Albert wesker so it requires zero acting skills
@@maxdam4059 he’s serious, but he’s also a ham
Stormfront likes to toy with her prey... and they actually established that... i think the most annoying part for me was the teleportation thingy
Stormfront likes to play with her prey, so her torturing makes sense.
@Chair of Truth Thats probably because she was a genuine threat she couldnt just pin down and choke like a regular human.
Antony Starr just elevates this show to another level, one of the best acted villains in a long time.
all time?
@@MrJTH1999 yes, all time
@@MrJTH1999 I am against the notion that something new can’t be timeless or worthy of GOAT status. I personally don’t agree that Anthony Starr is the best acted villain of all time, but he sure as hell has a good case for it.
Wouldn’t not knowing the protagonists chances of survival add more tension to a scene?
his point is not when it's confusing i guess but yes I agree.
When tobey maguire started crying as homelander pissed on Spider-Man 3 really made me happy inside

@@yungslyme4341 lmao right

I'm assuming you're making this comment because both pieces of media contain multiple villains but The Boys handled it right?
I feel like season 1 was a 9/10. While season 2 was more of an 8 out of 10. If the first half of season 2 was better I think it would have been just as good as season 1.
True
I’d say season is like a 7.5/10 (I love it but it has major flaws) and season 2 is like a 3.5/10, it’s absolutely atrocious.
Every day now I have to say “diabolical” some how to make my day better
The problem with the heroes powers is not something I find weird, some heroes are stronger than others dude, and only the 7 and some others are really hard to kill.
and it makes a shit ton of sense considering they're all the result of some crazy experiment with wildly variable outcomes
Exactly
yeah i agree 100% but i’m also confused why they don’t get as scared of the 7 anymore or think they can take them on easily with guns
When Frenchie said “girls do get it done” I had a nice chuckle
completely on board with the ratings you gave for each season. mirrors my thoughts almost exactly.
Not even mentioning any of The Deep in the recap. Can't tell if intentional and hilarious or a happy coincidence.
"That's not how TV works nowadays." Or ever.
Butcher's change of attitude in S2 was the most gratifying thing to see, hopefully he won't turn out as the Butcher in the comics
The show does things different than in the comics, like anything else, so I expect Butcher to end up differently in the show.
Honestly, I hope he does. The Boys always was a pretty terrifying story, and the Butchers transformation would suit that tone perfectly
P.K. Oscillave It's 2020 man, logical thought is kinda outlawed
You’re welcome to believe whatever you want to believe. But using the words “minor problems” doesn’t help your point. In the case of someone like Cosmo, he reviews movies and TV professionally. He uninteionally is going to look into the small things. He can’t just turn it off.
I liked season 2 more so it doesnt affect me.
@@sterlingwesson He made two pretty bad points on the characters survivability chance being unknown, which would suck if we already know whether theyll live or not, and the durability of supes ranging differently although it is pretty easy to know which supes might be bulletproof.
Season 3 is so far better than Season 2.
The finale: Maive just shows up out of nowhere to save the day twice in row and how did a knife hurt stormfront but bullets didn’t?
when i was watching the show like 2 episodes before the finale i thought they were so dumb that they werent aiming for the eyes lol
Because she stubbed her in the eye wich is basically just liquid?
Bullets can't go through kevlar but a knife can. I'm assuming it's the same principle of force dispersion
Season 2 was way better than Season 1 for me personally, more action and more intense
Agreed
We also get more character development, bigger storylines, new and interesting additions like Stormfront, Edgar, Neuman and the church of the collective. I honestly don't understand how some people could say season 1 was better
In my eyes it’s as good as season 1 but in different ways
Season had more character growth but the writing wasn't as smart. Also the action scenes in the show have always been bad.
You high
Amazing cast helps make this show what it is, backed up by great writing.
My problem is with season 2 is that literally every problem is solved by “ill leak this if you let us go”. Like literally every fight
While there are a bigger number of small plot holes and whatnot in the season, I think the plot moved at a much more incredible pace, the whole idea and themes of this season were just so much more gripping and relavent to me compared to the first seasons "hughie wants revenge"
I am actually SHOCKED that you felt this season slow.
The fact that the characters were able to be in public despite being wanted was a huge issue for me too. Loved the finale though.
ManUtdBoy13 you wouldn’t know the persons face who killed Biden or Trump?
Not to mention that A-Train found Hughie and Annie in the finale after like 30 minutes of running around. Because he could have done that to find the boys this entire time, apparently, and just...didn't?
@@CloudMountainJuror You don' t understand man. His heart wasn't in it.
