This is the start of my Muslim series in the USA (7 videos in total). I tried my best to cover it from as many angles as possible in the Detroit/Dearborn area. One thread coursing through all of these videos is that Islam has a full range from left to right just like Christianity, Judaism, or any other religion. Sacha Baron Coen and the most conservative Hassidic Jewish person are both Jews. Keep this in mind when you think of Muslims.
I've talked to women in niqabs in Saudi Arabia when it was acceptable, but to do this on camera is next to impossible. Annettee agreed for me to film her so we need to thank her for this, she provided a window into a world that most of us will never get exposed to. She is a Mexican American convert, and to my surprise, there are quite a few Mexican/American converts to Islam. Remember this is one perspective and does not represent all Muslims.
Coming soon will be a video about a Muslim woman who is very liberal and dresses in western style with no headscarf. But just like Annette she prays 5 times a day and is devoted to Islam. So my goal in this series (like most of my work) is to show you that an easy label does not apply. Two people can be Muslim but approach life in completely different ways.
Thanks for watching and I'll see you next Sunday!

I completely get why this woman feels more freedom. As women, it is exhausting to present yourself to the world on a daily basis. Not only do I feel this woman is bada$$ but she is a symbol of strength. Her energy is so independent. It is a shame the perception is that she is oppressed. I wish I had her courage.

You think she is liberal? Maybe some or even majority of women covering themselves enjoy it, but it doesn't mean that they support freedom of others to uncover own bodies. Some Muslims agree it is an obligation for women to cover their faces, some think it is only about covering their hair. Do you know that many interpret the Islamic law that it should be enforced on Muslim women to cover themselves. Some claim all women, no matter what religion they adhere to, need to cover, because otherwise they spread corruption.
Is it shocking that many see it as immoral to uncover, shameful, and therefore enforce covering on daughters, wives if necessary?

I am writing from Turkey, a moderately Islamic society. This dress is considered old-fashioned and seen as a bit on the far side in our society (think of Mennonites or Amish in USA). What I find interesting in this lady's perspective is that she is looking at the matter from a totally American way of thinking. The reason why women wore, and still wear, niqab (I learned the name from this video) is because men want to protect women from the looks of other men. However, this lady's motivation is mostly from her own distress in society. She wants to be noone, it seems. In the past, women were not allowed to go out much, and when they did, they wore this dress to avoid their bodies being seen by men. I can't even think of a woman in niqab in a traditional Muslim society speaking to a non-Muslim man alone.

  • @lucindabutler1100

What an interesting perspective, there's so much judgement in society I can see why this lady feels freedom. Yet again I have learnt so much by watching these videos. Personally for me as a partially deaf person who wears a hearing aid, I feel I would struggle to communicate, as I rely on lip reading for the most part. I once sat on a plane with a lady who wore a niqab, you could feel the tension on that flight, I decided to introduce myself to the lady who was very well educated and graciously offered some of her food to me, which I took and it was delicious! That was one of the most relaxing flights I have ever taken and thankfully she sat on my good side so I could hear her perfectly!

She is a bit on the fundamentalist side though. Islam doesn’t require women to cover their faces, it’s the believe of at least 80% of Muslim population. Also, polygamy is an option in rare cases and women shouldn’t be agreeing with it so easily. The conditions of polygamy are so strict that not even .01% of humans can fulfill it. For instance, in polygamy a man is required to treat all wives equally if he can’t do it he shouldn’t be going for the second wife. Tell me how many humans can treat two individuals equally?

@Roger Crankshaw You’re correct one the fact that people have the right to judge and discriminate, however it doesn’t mean that it’s right. And second, you have to check the lens in which you’re viewing things. Islam does not incite terrorist attacks. There are a group of extremists who incorrectly justify their personal and political views by twisting the religion of Islam to fit their needs. How about the fact that many who died in 9/11 were Muslim. How about the fact that most Muslims ( those who don’t belong to these extremist groups) publicly oppose terrorism and all extremists groups. That isn’t fair to take a select group of people and allow them to speak for over a billion people. According to Islam, what they are doing is immoral and are grave sins. There are always people who will twist, misconstrue and go against the actual rules of religion or laws and make it seem as if it is lawful. ( think of the coup that happened this past January with the U.S. government). Think of slavery, the KKK, or the crusades. What about the Christians who bomb planned parenthood’s, they do not speak for the majority of Christians. It is very narrow minded to think that such a small group represents the whole people. Would you consider every Italian to be in the Mafia? I know these are many examples and you may not think that they fit but it’s all the same thing. Don’t judge a whole group because of a few. Do you actually know any Muslims? I’m guessing not. True Islam is about peace. These frauds who use Islam to perpetuate hate and violence are not true Muslims. I feel sorry that you feel the way that you do. Do some research, get yourself out there ( unless you’re content in your frame of thinking then that’s your choice). May God bless you.

I don’t think you understand. Hijab/Niqab was banned in Turkey and many parts throughout the Arab peninsula by foreign forces under the guise of communism. It was women who fought to bring it back. It’s women who want to wear it. You’ve been indoctrinated by Israeli propaganda

    • @AbeTheFakeSage

My mother was born and raised in a region of the Arabian peninsula where the Niqab/Hijab was banned. She came to the USA not accustomed to wearing a hijab. It was here that she started to wear a hijab FREELY. It’s Israel, via her proxies, who want to enforce laws like this not only on Muslims, but everyone. Throughout the land.

cool video , I'm not religious , but good for her , I think she has every right to dress how she wants , I gave the video a like . So the thing about the 4 wives , usually its only for people who got like millions of dollars in the bank account , most guys don't get 4 wives , its more people who who own like multiple houses worldwide and have huge amounts of cash in the bank and who can't stay with one wife because they are traveling and away from family for work , I don't really have a opinion on it , I guess most guys like the idea and since I'm a guy I'm ok with it but most girls don't like the idea which is fine , its depends on how rich the guy is .
So getting 4 wives is different from adultery because adultery could get you sent to jail in most Muslim countries , it could also get you beat up by family or by the police depending how how many partners you had , if you had multiple partners like a hundred girlfriends or something , the police might show up and beat you up or something , sometimes people get sent to jail , if your HIV/AIDS positive you might get executed

For almost 2 years we were wearing balaclava the face musk and still some do as, instituted by the government as a protection from covid 19, so this idea is old and unsubstantiated and completely deconstructed that covering the face restraints and restricted us, only because few of us wears this face covering as religious simple, it's strange but when everyone was expected to wear it, then it became normalised, so this excuse to force those who look different then the majority to adapt the custom of ever changing society, is to stigmatise and be polemical against them because they offend our modern sensibilities which is forever going through metamorphosis, look how people dressed in earlier part of the 19 century. It's natural defences to be apprehensive about people with different religion and customs then you, we even tell our children “stranger danger” for good reasons. While we do not cover like niqab, the idea of being covered, separating from the common world, and maintaining one’s inner self and integrity is so much a vital part of our (orthodox) tradition, too. And I’d love to be your friend, Annettee! cool video , I'm not religious , but good for her , I think she has every right to dress how she wants , I gave the video a like .
So getting 4 wives is different from adulty because adulty could get you sent to jail in most Muslim countries , it could also get you beat up by family or by the police depending how how many partners you had , if you had multiple partners like a hundred girlfriends or something , the police might show up and beat you up or something , sometimes people get sent to jail , if your HIV/AIDS positive you might get executed

She makes some interesting points on niqab/burqa being a way for her to feel completely free of the surface level judgment that women have to face every day (too skinny, too fat, too old, too young, too ugly, too pretty, too much makeup, not enough makeup...). Makes me think of how judgmental the society is towards women and their looks. Although I wouldn't choose her way of clothing I understand how choosing it could paradoxically feel liberating.

I can understand that, but it doesn't seem ideal. You can choose to dress for your own comfort and simply not worry about what other people think rather than have your entire style revolve around the fear of what other people are thinking of you. A lot of these people still wear eye makeup too. And they wear this stuff when it's 100 degrees outside.

Usually we see a reflection of ourselves in others: Whatever we're most proud of or most insecure about. I think it's really interesting that she feels lack of judgment for others now that she's been covered and people can't judge her.

Annette seems like a very kind and gentle soul. Thank you for showing her perspective Peter. Hopefully the people in the comments can get their act together and remember that EVERY video you do is simply one person's perspective. I think that's the beauty of your channel.

If you don't have ideas about why this women was so open and confident about her religion and her beliefs is because she was Shia Muslim women.
She is a Brave women while other Non Muslim such such as Sunni women are suppressed who are forced into Misyar and Halala which is Sunni legal Prostitution used by their families and their fathers.
I hope Sunni women who are being oppressed can be free and get out of pathetic condition imposed upon them.

@celebrul_anonim_ - I’m sad to read this negativity. I’m a Christian who doesn’t have all the answers, but I know in my heart that God loves us ALL. Not just Christians, not just Muslims, not just Jewish, etc.
He created different paths to reach Him. We need to be constrained in these various faiths because we cannot function as decent human beings without structure and rules. God knows this about us. He sees our hearts always.
      1. He asks of us to love Him with all of our hearts.
      2. To love our neighbors and care for them as we would like to be cared for.
These are the two most important commands. From these two things everything else falls into place. God never mentioned “to love Christian or Jewish or Muslim, etc., neighbors.”
No, He simply stated “love one another”.

This lady seems interesting in that she is currently a muslim in a niqab and yet she still goes to catholic church with family when possible. Also seems to have body confidence issues with her appearance. Would that still be the case if she was happy with her body/face etc? I'm getting a lot of mixed signals. I feel you need to interview more muslim covered women to get more perspectives and not just hers.
Edit to add that she is also interested in wishing to practice jewish culture. Like pick something and stick with it.
