I hope that a sunscreen manufacturer someday comes out with an actual range of tinted sunscreens. I imagine it’d be impossible to find one right for deeper skin tones but as a very pale person, tinted sunscreens turn me orange but untuned sunscreens still show that white cast. Can’t even imagine the struggle for deep skin tones if it’s this hard for my pasty self.

Agreed! I was excited to see the new flex line by Colorescience, but that is lacking too. Fair is too fair for me, but jumping to medium is too dark. 😞 the tinted sunscreen struggle is real! All the “universal” ones are way too dark/orange.

Same here! I have red hair and pale skin and it’s very difficult to find a tinted mineral sunscreen that works for me. I LOVE the formulation and finish of the Australian Gold tinted sunscreen, but even the lightest tint is too dark and orangey for me :/

@@nathanliteroy9835 Except there's chatter now that you shouldn't be mixing the drops into the sunscreen because it can possibly alter the efficacy of the sunscreen. Lab Muffin mentioned this in a video and The Style and Beauty Doctor discusses this with cosmetic chemist Esther Olu. Dr Alexis Stephens has recommended Ilia for darker skin but they do have a range that would include lighter skin tones as well.

The compact also comes in a slightly lighter shade called beige. It will be too dark for very fair skin, but you can sheer it a bit if you smooth it out evenly. The only issue with the compact is it will wear off on shirt collars, hat rims etc. I use it when I want to just go without a lot of fuss. You can vary the application so it does a reasonable job of covering discolouration and even a bit of dark circles. It will migrate into wrinkles if you do not smooth it carefully over those areas. Sometimes you need to go back a few seconds later to make sure it hasn’t sunk into a crease. But once it sets it more or less never moves.

It was so frustrating finding a sunscreen for me because everybody kept saying that mineral sunscreens were better, but they never worked for me. It would always make my skin very dry and make me break out (I have oily skin by the way). I switched to a chemical sunscreen and I love how it feels on my skin, no white cast, no itching, no oiliness, and also no breakouts. I feel like it was the zinc oxide that made my skin like that because when I used the niacinamide from The ordinary that has zinc, it made my skin itchy, but when I used the one from The Inkey list I was totally fine.

Thanks Dr. Dray! On a personal note, I would be careful with the Cetaphil Sheer Mineral Face SPF 50 for sensitive skin. It has ethylhexylycerin (preservative) high up in the ingredient list, which can cause eye irritation. Upon first use, it caused eye redness and eye eczema followed for me. Still having flares weeks later. I called Galderma to report symptoms. While it has a lovely finish, it may not be best for those with sensitive skin or eczema prone skin. Many reviews I have seen report eye sensitivity. Hopefully Galderma will adjust the formula as I really loved the finish. Passed it on to my husband who has normal to oily skin and he loves it and has no sensitivity.

@@SanSan-ng1kg Yeah I really really like it too, very emollient but I have dry skin so I appreciate that. Yeah it has ‘triasorb’ in it which is the new filter, seems really promising.

I don't know if this is helpful but I have eczema on my hand and I use chemical sunscreen (sundance med ultra sensitive sunscreen milk for kids spf 50+) just fine. Might not be the same for the face since the skin is different.

I don't have eczema but after I have had intense skin treatments I use La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Baume b5 Spf 50. I just can't use this around my eyes but I find it to be really soothing and helpful even after microneedling or chemical peels. But I'm curious what Dr. Dray would recommend.

Thanks for this video. I had the Avene tinted in my hand today but there were so many cheaper sunscreens I put it away and decided to wait. I'm glad I did b/c I still have a bit of the old Avene from last year and I might give the compact a try instead. I'll probably get the tinted eventually, but the compact looks so interesting. I'm glad Avene has one.

I found the compact was way too dark for me, and it oxidizes too. you would have to put something with a strong white cast underneath, as dr. dray does here so it can balance out nicely.

If you have stubble be careful with these SPF's, especially the tinted version - it is a pain to remove, needs 2-3 cleanses

    • @rocktheashba

We've got beards in the family and find that a thicker skin cleanser i.e. a cream-type one (we use a Superdrug Simply Pure cleanser) helps to dissolve the film of physical spf like this one. :) Just rub it in well to break up the layer of sunscreen and rinse or wash off with a gentle cleanser.

I think it’s a nice option for easy reapplies during the day. The Avene compacts comes with 2 shades, beige (light) and dark honey (darker). I have olive skin tone. The beige was too light and the honey looked too dark and orange. I tried mixing both shades to get to my skin shade but it’s inconvenient specially when reapplying. When applying the recommended amount of sun screen, it looked cakey. So I use it for reapplies only.

me and my girlfriend me have very sensitive skin and are in Australia right now, so we do need, apart from a hat, good sun protection. We both love the mineral tinted compact powder SPF 50 (yes, it is VERY) pricy, but it works so so well for our skin so as sunscreen is one of the most important things in your skin routine we spend the money. We apply it two to three times a day.
So happy you made a video about one of our favorite products.

I really don't like the "dewy" look, or its feel for that matter. It gives me the sensation that my pores are clogged, my skin isn't breathing, and on top of it, I look sweaty, which I always do anyway. Despite not sweating under my arms, where most people sweat, I do sweat a lot on face, neck, head.
If you could recommend the lightest sunscreen that is breathable, I'd appreciate it.

I listened to him and I feel so much better now(mentally) and I have energy and my hair is looking stronger and healthy. UV rays are not good but we all need sun even for at least 15-20 minutes for our health and soul 😇 we don’t need to be too extreme , just stay safe with sunscreen hat and sunglasses 😊

In Canada we still have the original Avene which have both mineral filters. I have all 3 - tinted, non tinted, and tinted compact. I find the tinted liquid gives dewy look and is not drying. The untinted liquid is more matte looking. The tinted compact - I love - as it is matte and moisturizing. Best applied with fingers. I can use it over foundation for touch ups during the day.
If it weren't for the expiry date, I would stock up on the old version.

I’ve been using the compact after my regular sunscreen as an ‘extra’ layer to cover my hyperpigmentation. It soaks in beautifully. I still add some foundation because I have quite a bit of hyperpigmentation but it’s a nice layer and is a nice extra layer. I go a bit overboard but I enjoy this compact and have used a few different brands and I think this is my favourite one. I top it with a spray setting spray with spf in the summer and reapply it regularly when I’m outside (and wear a hat). I just got the regular Avene spf from FabFitFun so I’m not that excited to try it.
